Send us a textThe countdown to America's most competitive mountain running showdown has begun. In this episode, host James Lauriello sits down with race director Tom Hooper and co-host Nick Tusa to dissect the upcoming Sunapee Scramble – the USATF Mountain Classic Championships that will determine who represents Team USA at the World Mountain Running Championships. This race promises unparalleled drama as athletes tackle a brutally demanding 9.2-mile course with over 3,200 feet of elevation gain. The uniquely designed two-loop format mimics the world championship course in Spain, featuring both service road climbs and highly technical descents through what locals call "the glades" – described as "really steep, really fast, really mushy." It's a course that demands complete athletes, or as Hooper puts it, "Swiss army knives" of mountain running. The conversation dives deep into the compelling storylines shaping both fields. On the men's side, all eyes are on the brewing rivalry between defending champion Dan Kurtz and rising star Mason Copey, who recently outpaced Kurtz on Mount Sanitas. Meanwhile, the women's race presents a fascinating battle between established elites like Ali Ostrander, Rachel Tomajczyk, and Lauren Gregory against emerging talents such as Sophie Wright and Flannery Davis Love. With only four men's spots and three women's spots available for Worlds (plus Grayson Murphy's automatic qualification), several American stars will inevitably be left heartbroken. What makes this selection race particularly significant is the extraordinary depth of talent – many competitors boast sub-14 minute 5K and sub-30 minute 10K credentials – paired with the technical challenges that will expose any weaknesses in descending ability. The trio offers detailed analysis and bold predictions about who will triumph on this unforgiving New Hampshire terrain.Curious about which rising stars might have their career-defining breakthrough? Which established veterans might miss the world team? Or how the unusually wet, cold conditions might reshape the competitive landscape? Tune in for expert insights into what promises to be the most competitive selection race ever assembled on American soil.Follow James on IG - @jameslaurielloFollow the Steep Stuff Podcast on IG - @steepstuff_podUse code steepstuffpod for 25% off your cart at UltimateDirection.com!

Send us a textSydney Petersen's meteoric rise in the trail running world is a testament to what happens when natural talent meets mountain passion. From walking on to Colorado State University's team to signing a professional contract with Brooks Trail Runners in just one competitive season, her journey exemplifies the beautiful transition many athletes experience when moving from track to trails.Growing up in the mountain town of Crested Butte gave Sydney a natural affinity for vertical terrain. Despite starting competitive running relatively late, she developed steadily through college under coaches who recognized her potential. But it wasn't until tackling the iconic Imogene Pass Run after graduation that she discovered her true calling. Without specific training for the longer distance, Sydney had what she describes as "a spiritual experience" during that race, realizing her body might be better suited for mountains than tracks. What makes Sydney's approach refreshing is her "beginner mindset." Rather than feeling intimidated when lining up against world-class athletes at events like the US Mountain Running Championships, she focuses on enjoying the experience and removing self-imposed limitations. This mental framework allowed her to race confidently against established stars like Grayson Murphy, even leading portions of championship races in her debut season. Her 2024 plans include returning to Broken Arrow with improved tactical awareness, tackling the US Mountain Running Championships at Sunapee, and venturing to Europe for Golden Trail Series races including the legendary Sierre-Zinal. Sydney balances ambitious racing goals with thoughtful training through Gunnison's snowy winters, incorporating skiing and creative workouts while focusing on improving technical downhill skills to complement her natural climbing prowess.Listen in for insights on transitioning between running disciplines, maintaining confidence among elite competition, and finding inspiration from athletes who balance competitive excellence with community contribution. Sydney's story reminds us that sometimes the most beautiful athletic journeys happen when we follow the terrain that speaks to our hearts.Follow Sydney on IG - @sydneypetersen33Follow James on IG - @jameslaurielloFollow the Steep Stuff Pod on IG - @steepstuff_podThis episode is brought to you by Ultimate Direction ! Grayson Murphy is a two-time world mountain running champion and a 4-time US national champion in mountain running and the vertical kilometer. She has also been a finalist at the US Steeplechase Olympic Trials and has qualified for the 2024 Olympic Trials marathon. In our discussion we go into depth on Grayson's training and how she structures her workouts for success, including: Grayson's current adventures, including a trip to Patagonia Her recent health concerns and how it has impacted her training How Grayson's focus on threshold work gives her great breadth for racing The pain cave of the vertical kilometer (and how I've been challenged to try one!) How Grayson uses limited and specific VO2 max workouts in training The concept of “lifetime miles” for runners Grayson's future racing plans Grayson's success has come in part from her ability to understand what works best for her mind and body. Our conversation will help you understand how you can apply some of these concepts to your own training. Enjoy! Links & Resources from the Show: Follow Grayson on Instagram and Strava Check out Grayson's awesome training journal Listen to my previous episode with Grayson My discussion with Grayson's coach, David Roche, on long runs Let me help you design your training Thank you MOBO Board! Invented by renowned physical therapist Jay Dicharry, MOBO helps you stabilize your stance with an innovative rocker board that's set up on two fins. The design effectively forces you to drive your big toe into the board to improve your stability. I was pretty arrogant going into my first session on the MOBO Board. How hard can it be to balance, right? Well, I was humbled pretty quickly! Even if you're a good runner, better balance, stability, and proprioception is going to help you have a more powerful stride and prevent more running injuries. You'll learn how to improve the efficiency of the kinetic chain from your hip to your big toe. Because as Jay likes to say, it's not just how strong you are, but how well you use that strength. I was just at a weekend physical therapy workshop (lol I was the only running coach) and learned how important (and rare) this simple movement is. Save 10% with code STRENGTHRUN10 at checkout at moboboard.com. Thank you High Performance Lifting! We're also supported by one of our most popular training programs: High Performance Lifting. We now know that muscle loss and less testosterone is a dramatic performance limiter as we age, especially among men. The best way to counteract the aging process and hold on to your youthful running performances is to get stronger.  High Performance Lifting is the only weightlifting program on the market that's created by a USA Weightlifting National Coach and a USA Track and Field certified coach. It's periodized, progressive, and focused on power so that you not only get stronger and become more injury resilient, but you're able to turn that new strength into speed.  While there are no secrets to great training, High Performance Lifting has been my secret weapon to create faster runners. Check it out here to see all the details. You can opt for the strength programming only, or get a version of the program with a running plan library and a series of expert interviews to help you take your running to the next level. She's now training and has even recently qualified for going to the Olympics, but has also dealt with some injuries and nerve issues that prevented her from competing and it took a long process of trial and error, but eventually she was able to figure it out and continue training. Grayson Murphy is a running chameleon. From two-time world mountain running champion to a track star who narrowly missed out on qualifying for the Olympics, the 28-year-old has made a career out of taking on different challenges and distances. And what a career. Despite only starting running aged 20, Grayson was soon ripping up records at the University of Utah, setting new standards in the steeplechase, 5,000m and 10,000m events and becoming a five times All-American. A professional contract followed, but life on the track didn't go exactly to plan to begin with and Grayson made the sudden and surprising switch to trail running. Victory at the American championship followed - an event she has now won four times - and, on her debut at the race, she won the 2019 World Mountain Running Championships. Two years later, she returned to the track in style for the Olympic trials, winning her semi-final and finishing sixth in the final of the 3,000m steeplechase. This year, it was back to the mountains again and a second world championship win as Grayson captured first place in the up and downhill race in Austria. Running Tales spoke to her about how football (aka soccer) had been her first love, why she loves running such a variety of events and the joys of 'aeroplane arms'...   ----------------------------------

We are so excited for this episode where we got to party with one of our favorite people: Grayson Murphy. She was fresh off a double national championship, winning the U.S. Uphill Champs on one day, followed by the U.S. Mountain Champs the next day, both in dominant fashion. In a few short years, she has established herself as one of the best trail runners in world history. How did she do it? Grayson describes a journey that was as much emotional as physical, learning to find happiness in the long-term process. Her incredible story features going to college to play soccer before finding out she was quite good at this running thing, becoming a professional and learning that she needed to follow a different path, and then courageously blazing her own trail in the sport. Her race wins are cool, but what's so inspiring about Grayson is her independent spirit, and how she has discovered that she gets to decide what it means to be successful in athletics. And that was just the start! Grayson talks about everything from overcoming competition anxiety to dealing with injuries to her fueling secret (dino nuggets sponsorship please). We hope this episode leaves you with inspiration to take the trail that's most meaningful to you. Especially if that trail is a bit overgrown and scary! We did a happy dance for the most wonderful day of the week: Podcast Tuesday! The main discussion was on fun takeaways from racing the Canyons 100k. David stepped up into the unknown and was 5th place! But what made the day really special was hitting a low point when it seemed impossible, and finding out that there was more to give. Our suggestion is to try something really big and really scary, whether it's in athletics or something else. Shoot those shots! The race discussion led to tons of fascinating topics: the science of "deception" in hot conditions, drug testing, the role of ego, the power of subconscious expectations, inspiration from people pushing their limits, and so much more! We also discuss the wildly uncertain area of electrolyte consumption, and how population-wide recommendations may not apply to individual athletes. This race was the most fun experience OF ALL TIME, and we can't wait to do more of these. Hopefully this discussion will inspire you to try something that seems unthinkable! And that was just the start! Other topics: the US Mountain Championships and the legend of Grayson Murphy, 5 rules for fueling runs based on duration and intensity, a shocking revelation about our favorite grocery store, last week's news of a positive drug test from an elite triathlete, and a question from a listener on how to optimize fitness at lower training volumes. Our only concern is that the happy dances on this episode may lead to cheek cramping (faces and butts). Keep the salt pills close by. Understanding your body's biomarkers, from stress hormones to testosterone to Vitamin D, can help you figure out if you're over-training, under-training, optimally training, or if you have a health issue that might be affecting your running. But the best part is that they give you personalized optimal ranges for each of these biomarkers and a host of ways to improve these markers through diet, lifestyle, or exercise changes. I've gotten several Ultimate tests from them and the process is simple, easy, and very eye-opening if you haven't done a deep dive on your biomarkers yet.  Of all the investments you can make in your running, this one is like getting a detailed checkup or regularly scheduled maintenance for your internal physiology.  Get yours today! Thank you Elemental Labs! A big thanks to Elemental Labs for their support of this episode! They make electrolyte drinks for athletes and low-carb folks with no sugar, artificial ingredients, or colors. And you can get a free sampler pack of 4 flavors and 8 individual packets when you pay $5 in shipping. Elemental Labs' products have some of the highest sodium concentrations that you can find. Anybody who runs a lot knows that sodium, as well as other electrolytes like magnesium and potassium, are essential to our performance and how we feel throughout the day. The citrus flavor has quickly become my favorite. I'm drinking one a day now to help me get enough fluids in our dry Colorado air. It's tasty and delicious and I find that I'm not peeing every 45 minutes throughout the day, which might be an indication I wasn't eating enough sodium. There's now mounting evidence that higher sodium intake levels are not unhealthy – and athletes need substantially more than your typical sedentary person. Of course, ask your doctor if you're worried. But for those athletes running outside in the heat, an electrolyte replacement makes a lot of sense. So check out Elemental Labs to try their new flavor or get a free sampler pack.

BWI Daily: Penn State strikes out in portal at defensive end

Penn State football got bad news this week from the transfer portal. Three of their top defensive end targets, Gabriel and Grayson Murphy of North Texas and Jordan Domineck of Gerogia Tech elected to go elsewhere. The twin pass rushers form North Texas chose UCLA as their transfer destination, while Domineck picked Arkansas over Penn State. Host of the BWI Daily Edition, Thomas Frank Carr, breaks down the sting factor of each decision, then explains what else is out there. After that, he looks at the roster to try and find solutions to the Nittany Lion's problem at d-end. First, T-Frank discusses why Domineck isn't a massive loss for Penn State. He doesn't think that the one-time Yellowjacket was a great fit given Penn State's need at the position and Domineck's skillset. However, Domineck is an excellent example of the type of players left in the portal that Penn State has to choose from, so he dives into the numbers and shares what he knows about the senior defensive end. After wrapping up his thoughts on Domineck, T-Frank explains why the Murphy twins are the more considerable loss. He explains the confusion about their positional fit and why he thought they were more fit for Penn State, given the talent already on the roster. He points out critical metrics in the profile from PFF and how they could have helped fill a void. Next, T-Frank describes the game of TCU transfer Ochaun Mathis. The rising senior took a step back last season as Domineck did. But just like the Georiga Tech pass rusher, there's an explanation. First, he dives into the stable and unstable metrics of Mathis' data from PFF and then provides context with his film observations. Penn State is looking for a defensive end in the portal because of a deficiency of one key element in the room. The Nittany Lions aren't lacking quality talent, and T-Frank goes through the roster of players and how they can help the team. He explains why Adisa Isaac is so important but why he likely can't do it alone. To fix the problem, Penn State has one final solution. That player is freshman Dani Dennis-Sutton. T-Frank explains how he's come around to the idea of the freshman being a major factor next fall, despite his hesitance to place too much pressure on first-year players. Recruiting Pod: National Signing Day discussion, Cooper Cousins commits

Penn State finished up its January contact period on a high note Saturday, adding a commitment from Pennsylvania four-star offensive lineman Cooper Cousins. It was one of a variety of topics that have grabbed headlines in recent days, giving Blue White Illustrated's Greg Pickel and Ryan Snyder plenty to discuss on our latest recruiting podcast. Of course, National Signing Day is set for tomorrow, Feb. 2, but with only one committed player left to sign for Penn State, junior college safety Tyrece Mills from Lackawanna College, we're not expecting a ton of drama. Or are we? Penn State is still in the mix with one uncommitted 2022 offensive lineman in Washington native Vega Ioane. The three-star flew out to State College this past weekend for an official visit, and all signs point to him deciding between the Nittany Lions and Washington Huskies tomorrow. Ioane has already announced publicly that he'll decide at 11:45 a.m. ET. Of course, the early signing period and its impact on National Signing Day is also a popular topic now, especially after a hectic coaching carousel and the implementation of the transfer portal. Ryan and Greg discuss their thoughts on that, and whether the early signing period will still be around in years to come. The guys finish off today's podcast with some discussion surrounding the transfer portal. This past week, Penn State offered former North Texas players Gabriel and Grayson Murphy. Both are expected to be important to the Nittany Lions, as they remain in search for linebackers and defensive ends. #PennState #NittanyLions JOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annual SUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmation Bookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/ Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: http://bluewhiteonline.com Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/ Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3 Learn more about your ad choices. It was a busy offseason for Penn State sports, even if there weren't many games or matches this weekend. Host of the BWI Daily Edition, Thomas Frank Carr runs down the weekend's news with reporter Greg Pickel, who joins the show each Monday.  Pickel covers wrestling for BWI, so they start with the Nittany Lions 19-13 win over Iowa in a battle of the top two teams in the nation. How did Penn State come out on top? Who scored the pivotal points for head coach Cael Sanderson's squad? Pickel breaks down that and gives his thoughts on the lineup heading into the home stretch for the 2022 season. Finally, he provides a preview of what's to come this week.  After finishing up wrestling, T-Frank and Pickel discuss junior day for Penn State football. The Nittany Lions are concluding the open contact period in January and had a jam-packed weekend with top recruits from several classes in attendance.  While the Class of 2023 is the primary focus, Pickel starts with the Class of 2022 and a late target in Vega Ioane, an offensive lineman from Washington. After his official visit, Pickel caught up with Ioane this weekend and shared what he had learned. Ioane chooses between Penn State and Washington on Wednesday, and Pickel thinks it's a close race. Stay tuned to BWI for more information as the week unfolds.  After Ioane, they shift their focus to new offers that Penn State sent out this week. Several receivers found themselves leaving Happy Valley with an offer from the Nittany Lions, such as Baltimore, Md., St. Frances Academy receiver Ryan Manning and Georgia prospect Colton Hood from McDonough.  They discuss several other players that stood out this weekend, including DeMatha Catholic defensive lineman Jason Moore and the new 2024 Penn State commit from McDowell in Erie, Cooper Cousins.  Finally, Pickel and T-Frank circle back to the current Penn State football team with two potential transfers. The Nittany Lions offered twin brothers from North Texas, Gabriel and Grayson Murphy. What do they bring to the table? What should you know about their status? T-Frank and Greg give their thoughts on the duo and Penn State's work in the portal.  JOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annual SUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmation Bookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/ Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: http://bluewhiteonline.com Download our podcasts: https://bluewhiteillustrated.podbean.com/ Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/ Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3 Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Learn more about your ad choices. Rudy Winkler broke an American record that had stood since 1996 with his 82.71-meter heave in the men's hammer throw. Stay tuned because he will be a guest on the show later this week. Other topics discussed: – The Trayvon Bromell comeback chatter really started in April after he ran 9.8 and then improved upon that to a 9.77, which ranks as the top time in the world for 2021. He backed it all up and cruised to a 9.80 win in the men's 100m. We also discuss how Fred Kerley's big risk paid off by opting to run the 100m and 200m instead of the 400m, where he won a silver medal at worlds in 2019. – Allyson Felix's final 100 meters were a thing of beauty and landed her on her fifth U.S. Olympic team and her first as a mother. Quanera Hayes took the win in 49.78 and will be on her first Olympic team alongside with Wadeline Jonathas. – Kyle gives his hypothetical men's and women's DMR teams if it was an Olympic event. – The women's 3,000m steeplechase saw some breakthroughs with Grayson Murphy taking her respective section by gunning for the Olympic standard and bringing Courtney Wayment along with her. This certainly makes Thursday's final much more interesting. – World record holder Keni Harrison gets even sweeter redemption after missing the 2016 Olympic team. + Much more... David started the SWAP (Some Work All Play) team in 2013, "with the premise that he could help athletes learn to live like puppies and run like rockstars while not giving a f#ck about things that aren't important." One of his main goals of the future is to do whatever he can to support athlete-activists like Grayson. Discussed in this episode: --Supporting an elite athlete with a variety of interests --Mental health and Grayson's blog post on "brain sprains" --Grayson's planners --SWAP podcast with David and Megan Roche --Running as a celebration of life --Ted Lasso show --26:12: David flipping the interviewer-interviewee tables on me --31:00: Grayson and David's environmental work --Protect our Winters (POW) --Forest Service Council --38:20: David's pro bono work and Inuit Circumpolar Council --Editor of trail runner mag, Zoë on the Social Sport Podcast --44:00: gendered access to outdoor spaces --David's dog Addie; Grayson's cat Cusco Quotes: “Brands are recognizing that athletes can be more than just gold-medal coat hangers. They can also be ambassadors for the sport, and can be important influencers of change…companies, athletes, and coaches are becoming more holistic.” -Grayson Murphy “When we're talking about the environment, we're also talking about race, we're talking about gender—everything that makes us humans… This is not a liberal versus conservative issue; this is about how, as a society, we can move forward to a much more just place.” -David Roche *This episode is sponsored by Paper Trails Greeting Co. Grayson Murphy, Professional Runner, University of Utah alum and 5x All-American for Cross Country and Track and VIS League™ Member shares her incredible and unconventional journey in sport. She is currently running for SWAP, “Some Work All Play,” and formerly for NAZ Elite. Grayson has been successful in numerous distance running events ranging from the 1500m, 3k Steeplechase, to trail running, where she earned the title of U.S Mountain Running Champion after winning a USATF National Title, and many events in between! Grayson’s path looks a little different than most D1 runners because she started college as a soccer player. Today, Grayson opened up with us about topics such as transferring schools, changing sports, switching pro groups, all in the pursuit of making the right decision for herself. With these changes, inevitably comes changes in one's body and she explains how different sports and events will likely lead to physical changes and that this is totally normal! She also goes into detail about her struggles with anxiety and teaches us how to build our own personal “toolkits” to navigate one's anxiety. She wraps it up with advice on how to stay true to you. “Have the courage to be brave and believe in yourself.” - Grayson Murphy

Wondering what you can do to prevent injuries? Let's learn from the best in the sport! Today's podcast rounds up advice from the world's top female runners on what they do to prevent injuries and stay healthy while performing at the highest levels. I asked a single question to 5 of the best runners in the world - Colleen Quigley, Sara Hall, Grayson Murphy, Kate Grace, and Molly Huddle: What single idea, tool, or strategy is most helpful in keeping you healthy and running injury-free? The responses are fascinating. Particularly, pay attention to the commonalities. These women are especially focused on what allows them to run sustainably, improve over time, and focus on their own particular needs. Many of the women mentioned the importance of your mindset, and I couldn't agree more! That's why we offer a course designed to improve your mental toughness, along with techniques that you can implement in your own running. If you aren't ready for a full course, check out these helpful guides to up your mental game: Mantras for running Mental toughness training Additional tips from a sports phycologist See what these incredible women had to say and, of course, see our ultimate guide for injury prevention. Thank You PATH Projects! PATH Projects continues to be a great supporter of this podcast! I'm grateful for their partnership and want to share more about their products that I've been loving because they so durable and comfortable. PATH Projects is an online-only retailer of high-quality running gear and apparel. That means there is no retail markup, making their products quite affordable. In particular, I’ve just started wearing their 3” Sykes shorts and they’re a little different from the 5” Sykes shorts (you can see those in action here). The material is thinner and lighter, which is perfect in a performance short, and they’re obviously shorter. I’m not sure if my wife thinks they’re too scandalous or loves them, but I’m wearing them constantly. PATH uses new technical fabrics, like the Japanese fiber called Toray Primeflex, to create award-winning apparel for endurance athletes. In fact, their Brim shorts and Tahoe base liner won Runner’s World’s 2018 Gear of the Year award. And the Pyrinees hoodie was named one of the best six sweatshirts for running in the cold by Gear Patrol. You know you'll be wearing the best when you select PATH Projects!

If there’s one message that I could get across to athletes at every level, it’s simply the idea of “You are enough.” It’s a beautiful message because it applies to you no matter how many awards you’ve received, your age, your goals—really anything. If you are a person that has experienced a fairly trial-less life, maybe you consider yourself lucky or a natural, it may feel like you areyour accomplishments. On the other hand, maybe you feel like your life is going from one trial to another, none of which seem to make life any better, but you aren’t your failures either. Most all of us are somewhere in the middle. We’ve had our share of positive experiences and setbacks. Learning how to use the failures to our advantage takes practice, and so does realizing that we are more than our greatest accomplishments. It takes a mature person to understand their self-worth, something that young runner Grayson Murphy has done early in her career. Grayson Murphy Grayson grew playing many sports, but navigated toward soccer as she grew older. She had the opportunity to play on a college team her freshman year. When she switched schools the following year, she decided not to play soccer but still wanted to join a team. She knew that she loved being a part of a team and decided that running wasn’t too far of a stretch from playing soccer. Turns out she was right. For the next three years it was an anomaly when Grayson didn’t PR not only in an event, but in all her training sessions. She transferred schools once again to take advantage of her new found skills and received a scholarship at the University of Utah. She finished her degree in civil engineering as a 5x All-American and signed with NAZ Elite. Believe in Your Personal Journey To this point, Grayson was enjoying everything that came with her running career. She loved the comradery of her team, being in the running community, and the act of running itself. It was after she started training with the NAZ Elite in Flagstaff, Arizona when things starting feeling different for her. “I told everyone I felt like a puzzle piece, that was almost the right piece,” says Grayson, “I needed community and I needed family. Flagstaff felt like an extended training camp. It wasn’t a home.” After one year of training as a professional runner in Flagstaff, Grayson decided to call it quits and head back home to Salt Lake City. “I decided I wanted to build my life how I wanted it to be from the ground up,” she says. Of course, this was not an easy task. She was anxious about how people would look at her. From an outside perspective, it looked like she was giving up a wonderful opportunity, doing something she enjoyed and was good at. Not only that, but she would be losing out on her sponsorships, heading home to no job or income. Grayson showed incredible maturity in this decision. She chose to do what she knew was best for her. During this time, she continued to run and realized that it was being out in nature that made her happy. She picked up trail running and three months later, won the Mountain Running Championship. Six months after being home she signed with Saucony. She believed she could be a good rep for any running sponsor; she just needed to keep believing that and the time would come. Now she looks back at these six trying months, and considers them a funny story. The relatively short stressful time, made it all worth it. Follow Your Heart “Success is never final; failure is never fatal.” This quote belongs to NCAA basketball coach legend, John Wooden. He understood that showing up every day, after every win or loss, had more to do with the person performing the acts than the failures and the successes themselves. Remember, you are enough. You are more than what things you do or what things happen to you. Follow the path that is true to you, not necessarily the one that will give you the most accomplishments or please the most people. In Grayson’s words, “If you follow your heart, you will end up with the days you have day dreamed about.” Resources: Grayson on Twitter Grayson on Instagram Grayson’s Website   Thank you to my wonderful sponsors Athletic Greens and Tracksmith for sponsoring this episode of the Running for Real Podcast. You may know her on Instagram as Racin Grayson. Meet Grayson Murphy, a three-time All-American collegiate runner at University of Utah, originally from Salt Lake City, as well as a top civil engineering major with plans to run professionally after college. Grayson was featured in our How the Collegiates Fuel series and recently started a blog of her own.  Questions we ask Grayson include: How did you get your start in running? How did this lead to you playing collegiate soccer and then choosing to pursue running? What have you noticed are differences between soccer and running? You have had quite the collegiate experience after transferring colleges three times! (from Sweet Briar to Santa Clara to Utah). Can you tell us more about what this process has been like? As a civil engineering major, how do you balance running, academics and your future career aspirations (as well as finding an identity outside of running)? You write that one of your lessons learned in 2017 is “Not everything has to be a goal.” What do you mean by saying this and what advice do you have for listeners who make everything into a goal? What do you see for your future as an athlete? You wrote a blog post titled, “When you fall down, you get back up,” on making it to the NCAA Indoor National Championships in 2017 and breaking 16 minutes in the 5k. What was breaking this barrier like for you? What do you think help you achieved this incredible feat? What is something IG followers/fans might not know about you? (can be a random fact, or something that’s making you thrive lately). What’s your go-to racing mantra and/or favorite running quote? What advice would you give your younger, pre-college self? What does being a Strong and Brave Runner Chick mean to you? How can listeners connect with you? --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/strong-runner-chicks/support
