Coach Loretta and Coach Lindsay are joined by Shannon O'Grady, CEO of Gnarly Nutrition, for a deep dive into the science behind fueling performance. From NSF certification—and why it matters for athletes—to breaking down the roles of carbohydrates, protein, and creatine, this episode gets nerdy in the best way. Whether you're a runner looking to optimize your nutrition or just curious about what actually works (and what's hype), this conversation delivers both expert insight and practical takeaways you can apply right away.
Maren Hamilton ran global social at The North Face — building and executing a strategy for 5.5 million followers, integrating athletes and creators, and navigating every platform shift from the follow graph to the discovery graph. Then she left to help build Popfly, the creator platform built specifically for the outdoor industry. In this conversation, Maren shares the playbook she developed at TNF for running brand social at scale, including how to say no to the hundreds of internal requests that flood every social team, why the outdoor buying journey is fundamentally different from fashion and beauty, and what brands still get wrong about TikTok, Threads, and Facebook. Plus: Why Head of Social to CMO is now a real career path, what makes a creator pitch actually land with a brand, and the Adidas sub-two-hour marathon moment that might be the greatest brand activation of the decade. Michael Rueckert was a ski resort marketing director who got curious about a simple question: when someone asks an AI where to ski, does Snow Basin show up? That curiosity led him down a rabbit hole that eventually became Centium AI, a platform now working with over 170 outdoor brands to help them understand and improve their visibility across every major AI model. In this conversation, Michael and Aaron dig into how ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity each "think" differently about outdoor brands, why landing a GearLab ranking may now be worth more than any paid search campaign, and what it means for marketing when AI starts making purchasing decisions on behalf of humans. They also go deep on the practical side — how to set up Claude projects as a creative co-pilot, why taste is still the irreducible human advantage in an AI world, and why the outdoor industry is actually better positioned than most for what's coming. https://femaleguidesrequested.com/podcast/ep-39-genevive-walker-stay-true/Show Notes:Genevive's Links:WebsiteInstrgramRace to Survive AlaskaFinding Balance Off the ScaleEpisode Intro:Dear listeners of the Female Guides Requested Podcast, happy Wednesday! This is your host, Ting Ting, from Las Vegas. Today, our guest is Genevive Walker. I first learned her name a few years ago when she stirred up a heated discussion on route names. This discussion quickly led to real actions within the climbing community to change inappropriate route names. I was thrilled that, through a mutual friend, I could invite her to talk about her life stories on the show.Genevive Walker is a professional rock climber, rock climbing guide, and active lifestyle model with a passion for promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in the outdoor industry. She began climbing in the Shawangunk Mountains in 2012, sparking her love for steep routes, roofs, and anything that requires kneebar trickery. After seven years in the sport, she started her career as a Single Pitch Instructor (SPI) certified by the American Mountain Guides Association (AMGA). Being part of the first all-female SPI cohort in 2018 opened her eyes to the disparities and inequalities within the climbing industry and ignited her mission to build community and offer representation for BIPOC climbers. Genevive is an athlete for Mountain Hardwear, DMM, Sterling Rope, and Gnarly Nutrition. She was also an athlete on Race to Survive: Alaska along with climber Favia Dubyk.I had so much fun chatting with Genevive. In this episode, you can hear laughter from beginning to end. We talked about how Genevive found climbing and guiding, how her family views her current lifestyle, what kind of guiding excites her the most, and how she manages social media. We also touched on more serious topics such as fear and her battle with disordered eating. Now, please enjoy this delightful conversation with Genevive Walker.Things We Talked about:Before Genevive found climbingHow does Genevive's family views her current lifestyle?Climbing let Genevive find another way to enjoy lifeGenevive started as a trad climber because that was the only thing availableWhen did Genevive have the thought to become a guide?Took the first all Women's SPI course sponsored by the AMGA, Brown Girls Climb, and Flash FoxyKeep expectation low and keep surprise herselfThe guiding lifeLove to work with women and climbers of color and that's the reason she loves guidingGunks, current statusRoute name debate and a movement to change route namesIdentity as a climber, model, and guideExcitement led to more work opportunitiesEating disorderWanting to fit in?The social mediaMentorship with the ProTrackPartnership with Favia DubykFear Talk

This episode originally dropped on May 29, 2023.Creatine is having a moment and, as today's guest, Shannon O'Grady says, “Creatine has been waiting for its moment for decades.”Shannon has her PhD in Nutritional Physiology and is the COO and Chief Product Officer of Gnarly Nutrition, where she leads product research and innovation across their entire line of products.Today, she and Sara focus their conversation on creatine. Creatine is the most studied ergogenic aid and, early on, was pigeonholed as mostly a bodybuilding supplement. Research is now clear that the benefits of creatine are far greater than just increased muscle mass (although that's a great benefit). It has been shown to help in:RecoveryInjury preventionCognitive function and brain healthHeat toleranceTreatment in psychiatric disordersAging athletes and female athletesIncreased power for endurance athletesSara and Shannon discuss what creative is, how it's produced and synthesized, how it could possibly provide all of these benefits, the best types, dosages, and the importance of being NSF Certified for safety and efficacy in a “wild west” industry. The advantages of creatine supplementation are clear and the question has gone from, "Why would I take that?" to "Why wouldn't I?"

Being a female in a male dominant space may be rare, but Shannon O'Grady handles it like a boss because, as COO and Chief Product Officer at Gnarly Nutrition, she IS one of the bosses. As CPO, it is her science and research that are the brains behind every new product development at this company. When Shannon was just a teenager, she had to give up her early passion for running because of a genital heart defect. At the time, medicine didn't have the technology and procedures it does today, so she was essentially told to quit running and pursue something else. So, Shannon turned to her other passion - SCIENCE. This led her down years of academia, where she pursued and completed her Ph.D. in Nutritional Physiology. She always dreamed of working for a sports nutrition company and, after years of letter writing, and knocking on doors, she landed her dream gig at Gnarly. Admirably, Shannon later came back to endurance sports and became an avid and accomplished cyclist, triathlete, climber, trail runner…all the things! Today, she is most passionate about the sport and discipline of jiu-jitsu, where she is a brown belt. You'll hear a lot about how products are developed at Gnarly and how important it is to know and understand your body's needs in training and racing, but it is her advice and tips for success in life and business that I admire and appreciate most. https://gognarly.com/ "I Could Never Do That" Website - https://www.podpage.com/icouldneverdothat/ "I Could Never Do That" Instagram - @icouldneverdothat Theme Music: Your Love by Atch -License: Creative Commons License - Attribution 3.0 Unported (CC BY 3.0) Support the Podcast through BuyMeACoffee.com - https://www.buymeacoffee.com/CarrieBarrett
There is a famous saying that abs are made in the kitchen; what it means is that no matter how hard you exercise, if you are not following a proper nutrition protocol, you may not get the results that you want. The purpose of the food we eat is to provide specific nutrients that we need for optimal health and performance. The nutrients themselves cause a number of chemical reactions in the body that could either increase lean muscle mass or torch unwanted fat. Dr. Shannon O'Grady, the Chief Product Officer for Gnarly Nutrition, describes the benefits of supplements and how they support your exercise efforts. Dr. O'Grady explains the chemistry behind nutrition and which supplements could help achieve certain results. It's all about the science of supplements on this episode of All About Fitness. Rebecca spent hours of her childhood, outside on her front lawn, catching caterpillars and fireflies. She was timid, liked to play alone, and was never one to venture off on her own to explore.Growing up, her mom's addiction to alcohol infected so much of her life, so she wrote a letter about it. Rebecca so thoughtfully describes alcoholism as feeling like she's losing someone, even though they're alive.Climbing became the thing that allowed Rebecca to challenge the idea of who she was, in order for her to see who she could become. For the Love of Climbing is presented by Patagonia. Lucho grew up in San Francisco's Mission District with the belief that the only way to survive his neighborhood was with the protection of a gang. So, he did the most logical thing: he joined a gang. Lucho started hanging out on street corners along the 24th St. Corridor and the next few years of his life were filled with gang fights, crime, and some really bad decisions. But finally, his mom intervened and an inner city kids wilderness backpacking trip led Lucho to rock climbing. Emily miscarried in March of 2021 and she struggled with how the experience felt so shameful. It was her job to keep him alive and growing, after all—right? Except, one of the worst parts about miscarriage is that it isn't caused by the action, behavior, or even body of the pregnant person in the majority of cases, but despite this information, there's still a lot of confusion and silence around this topic.“Mention the baby” is written all over the hashtags for miscarriage and pregnancy loss because ohmygosh—do people really think mothers-to-be have forgotten and they might somehow need a reminder? Emily's unborn son is always on her mind. Whenever someone says his name, her heart still rings with joy. Because so much of him *is* joy, and he brought more love than she knew possible. And now he's dead.To hide his memory would take away the last bit of what Emily has left of that love. So, Emily has made one request: mention the baby. Producer's note: This episode felt apropos in light of fifty years of a legally enshrined right to abortion in the United States brought to an end after the Supreme Court overturned its landmark ruling made in 1973. The loss of Roe vs. Wade means that millions of women across the U.S. no longer have their right to an abortion guaranteed by the constitution, and Emily's present and future career is impacted by this decision. For the Love of Climbing is presented by Patagonia. Kyle destigmatizes substance use and mental health by opening up about his own journey through recovery after a two-decade-long battle with drugs and alcohol that almost took his life in October of 2021.His fear of failure, fear of falling, and fear of inadequacy don't compare to the fear of not living a full life. Kyle's path to being substance-free embraces some of fear's corresponding counterparts—joy, success, the exhilaration of free-fall, and the inner sanctum of the non-comparative derivation of self-worth.Addiction…is a public health crisis. Just about any behavior or stimulus can go from well-adapted and functional to maladaptive and dysfunctional, but the more that we bring it into public discussion, the more that people can feel like they can support each other and talk about it openly, and not act like it's this *thing* that we have to hide. For the Love of Climbing is presented by Patagonia. Living through the recent pandemic has made us acutely aware of the need to adapt to changing circumstances. We can only control the controllables, and there are very few of them! This week's podcast guest has had an enormous impact on the world of high school coaching. Mr. Ryan Banta is a coach with more than 20 years of experience and the author of The Sprinter's Compendium. At the high school level, Ryan has produced 135 All-State medalists, including 10 state champions and 15 runners-up. He also coached this year's state championship team. A major factor in Ryan's success comes from his ability to help others embrace the twists and turns of the training process. He is a master at reframing setbacks and teaching his runners that success comes from being adaptable. Ryan's knowledge and experience applies to runners of all levels and with goals at any distance. Ryan's breadth and depth of knowledge make for a fascinating conversation on so many aspects of adaptability, including Why training plans always get changed How to remain flexible, while still pushing yourself forward Why it's so hard to change your plan even when your plan needs to change Our favorite forms of cross-training for runners Specific changes you can make to your training based on the setback you're experiencing Practical, every day training modifications for distance runners Links & Resources from the Show: Learn more about Ryan Banta Follow Ryan on Twitter Connect with Ryan on Linked In Check out Ryan's book, Sprinter's Compendium Listen to a previous episode with Ryan Download our free Season Planner worksheet Thank You Athletic Greens! A big thanks to Elemental Labs for their support of this episode! They make electrolyte drinks for athletes and low-carb folks with no sugar, artificial ingredients, or colors. And you can get a free sampler pack of 4 flavors and 8 individual packets when you pay $5 in shipping. Elemental Labs' products have some of the highest sodium concentrations that you can find. Anybody who runs a lot knows that sodium, as well as other electrolytes like magnesium and potassium, are essential to our performance and how we feel throughout the day. The citrus flavor has quickly become my favorite. I'm drinking one a day now to help me get enough fluids in our dry Colorado air. It's tasty and delicious and I find that I'm not peeing every 45 minutes throughout the day, which might be an indication I wasn't eating enough sodium. There's now mounting evidence that higher sodium intake levels are not unhealthy – and athletes need substantially more than your typical sedentary person. Of course, ask your doctor if you're worried. But for those athletes running outside in the heat, an electrolyte replacement makes a lot of sense. So check out Elemental Labs to try their new flavor or get a free sampler pack. Thank you Gnarly Nutrition! What an amazing brand name! Running is essentially a series of one-legged hops repeated over and over again. The repetitive nature of running can exacerbate imbalances in any part of our body. While many mild asymmetries are normal and not necessarily cause for concern, others can make you more injury prone. This week's guest helps runners deal with all types of imbalances. Dr. Sarah Ceschin is a physical therapist from Boulder, Colorado, who I had the pleasure of meeting in person at a recent group run. Sarah works with a variety of athletes, particularly runners and climbers. If you ever find yourself in need of a physical therapist, try to seek out one who is familiar with treating runners! As a runner herself, Sarah understands the demands of running and helps runners stay healthy and strong. As a physical therapist, she deals with athlete imbalances on a daily basis and is a tremendous resource to learn how to address them. In our discussion, we dive deep into the topic of asymmetries and imbalances, including: How to define an imbalance, and where you may find unexpected imbalances in your body Why some imbalances are normal and shouldn't make you worry How more pronounced imbalances may increase your risk of overuse injuries The unexpected asymmetries you may discover in trail running How fatigue accentuates imbalances: picture mile 26 of a marathon! The importance of strength work to minimize the impact of imbalances If you're looking to maximize your strength and durability, you'll enjoy my conversation with Sarah! This episode is brought to you by InsideTracker, one of the most reputable blood testing companies in the world. They were founded in 2009 by aging, genetics, and biometrics scientists to help you analyze your body's data and get a firm idea of how well you're responding to training. Understanding your body's biomarkers, from stress hormones to testosterone to Vitamin D, can help you figure out if you're over-training, under-training, optimally training, or if you have a health issue that might be affecting your running. But the best part is that they give you personalized optimal ranges for each of these biomarkers and a host of ways to improve these markers through diet, lifestyle, or exercise changes. I've personally gotten three Ultimate tests from them and the process is simple, easy, and very eye-opening if you haven't done a deep dive on your biomarkers yet. Of all the investments you can make in your running, this one is like getting a detailed checkup or regularly scheduled maintenance for your internal physiology. Pam didn't have a lot of tragedy in her life, so she didn't know about the arc. And as a grieving person, it was hard to look forward to anything, especially on top of the pandemic. But the world started opening up again, and she and her husband Jim rode 1,300 miles self-supported from the coast of Oregon to Montana last summer. When Jim started not feeling well, they decided to return home to California. And it was almost like she had a little bump, so she was devastated when they had to come back. It felt dark and isolated, and Pam realized—she didn't totally have it nailed.Pam knows about the arc, now. She knows that she has to build a future with things to look forward to and that give her purpose, if only to help her to not feel sad. And it might be like this for the rest of her life, so she takes the good when she receives it and doesn't expect it to last. But when she's stuck in a moment, she recognizes that it's only a moment and to hold fast—that all storms pass.Episode 37 is in loving memory of Brad Gobright, & in dedication to Pam, Jim, and Jill. Hope isn't perpetual optimism. It's an inherent part of being human that requires determination for things to change for the better. We're back this May with ten new stories from climbers about what hope means to them. Because life can be full of sucker punches, but that doesn't mean you stop breathing. In fact, the whole point is that you get up, learn something, pass on whatever slice of happiness or nugget of wisdom to others, and move forward. Because there's always hope on the other side. This is not a climbing podcast. It's a funny, sad, and mostly uncomfortable podcast about the healing that takes place when we talk openly about our pain and being the most human we can be, which doesn't always mean our best (or shiniest).Producer's notes: we got a 2022 glow-up and Alex Johnson partially sings Celine Dion's “It's All Coming Back to Me Now”.For the Love of Climbing is presented by Patagonia.
