This is the episode you have been waiting for! Des gives us all of the incredible (and sometimes gory) details of her podium finish at the Marathon des Sables through the Sahara. From the hectic travel to exactly what self-supported means and all of the details of each stage, she holds nothing back (including the water to rehydrate her portable toilet paper). She carried all of her food and gear for each of the 6 stages, and still managed to crush it. The queen of Boston becomes the queen of the desert, and it's an amazing tale to tell. In an industry where every brand is racing for a piece of the lifestyle pie, Brooks Running has stayed remarkably obsessed with one thing: the run. But as the running community undergoes a massive cultural shift—moving from solitary miles to a booming, community-driven movement—the brand is finding itself in a new position of influence. In this episode, Mike Peck, Vice President of Creative at Brooks Running, pulls back the curtain on Brooks' "Creative Lab," and explains why he feels he has the coolest job in the business and how his team operates like a nimble agency within a global brand.  We also dive into the brand's evolution, from its "Run Happy" roots to its recent high-impact campaigns and partnerships with running communities across the globe, as well as with high-profile runners, including the "superhuman" Cynthia Erivo, ahead of the Boston and London Marathons. Peck shares how Brooks balances technical performance with cultural relevance, the importance of showing up authentically (including in the social media algorithm), and why being "worthy of being cool" is all about staying true to the community that keeps them moving. campaignlive.com Music - Take you Out by Lucid Tides, courtesy of Triple Scoop. His 3:32.03 1500m at the 2025 USATF Outdoor Championships placed him sixth against the nation's best, while his 3:48.82 indoor mile at the Millrose Games stunned the sport and highlighted his breakthrough season. He also anchored UVA to its first NCAA indoor distance medley relay title with a 3:48.12 split indoors; he is a runner with impressive range, holding PRs of 13:16.82 for 5000m and 1:47.46 for 800m.Affiliated with UVA and Brooks Running through an NIL partnership, Martin credits strength-based training and heavy threshold work as the engine behind his speed. With the cross country season underway, he opened with a 22:51 8k at the Gans Creek Classic and was named ACC Performer of the Week, underscoring his momentum heading into the championship season. At just 21 years old, his trajectory reflects both resilience and the promise of a future star well beyond Charlottesville.Tap into the Gary Martin Special.  If you enjoy the podcast, please consider following us on Spotify and Apple Podcasts and giving us a five-star review! I would also appreciate it if you share it with your friend who you think will benefit from it. Comment the word “PODCAST” below and I'll DM you a link to listen. If this episode blesses you, please share it with a friend!S H O W  N O T E S-The Run Down By The Running Effect (our new newsletter!): https://tinyurl.com/mr36s9rs-BUY MERCH BEFORE IT'S GONE: https://shop.therunningeffect.run-Our Website: https://therunningeffect.run -THE PODCAST ON YOUTUBE: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UClLcLIDAqmJBTHeyWJx_wFQ-My Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/therunningeffect/?hl=en-Take our podcast survey: https://tinyurl.com/3ua62ffz

This is an exciting episode with a very special guest, thanks to our presenting sponsor Brooks Running! Anthony Ramos seems to have done it all from musicals to movies to music to television and more, but he hasn't run a marathon... yet. Thanks to Brooks and the NYRR, plus some sage coaching from the one and only Des Linden, he will achieve that milestone at the NYC Marathon this year. You might know Anthony as the original actor for the dual role of John Laurens and Philip Hamilton in Hamilton or for playing the lead role of Usnavi in the movie version of In the Heights. He is also starring in the upcoming movie A House of Dynamite to be released in theaters on October 10, 2025, before its streaming debut globally on Netflix on October 24, 2025. This is a fun one because Anthony brings all of the doubts and fears and challenges of a new marathoner to the conversation as Des and Kara coach him up a little bit. He relates the challenges of running to his career and is very blunt about his biggest concern for race day in NYC (to which all of you will relate). This one is for all of the Hamilton fans and for the marathoners, new and experienced, that have ever faced a challenge putting one foot in front of the other. Anthony puts words to the pursuit that are very inspiring!

What does it look like to lead with purpose and performance — to stay true to your values while building something that lasts? I so enjoyed talking with fellow @tuckschool alum @Jim_Weber, longtime CEO of @BrooksRunning, for a conversation about leadership, grit, and building a brand rooted in conviction. Jim took the helm at Brooks when the company was on the verge of bankruptcy — and through a relentless focus on purpose, customer obsession, and culture, he helped lead it to become a billion-dollar brand. He did all of this while navigating a personal cancer diagnosis — a chapter that deepened his clarity, his courage, and his belief in the kind of leadership that endures. We also talk about what it's like to work alongside Warren Buffett with the astonishing story of Brooks and @BerkshireHathawayInc, and the mindset required to lead through uncertainty without losing sight of what matters most. In 2024, she placed 4th at the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials, placed 4th at the U.S Olympic Track & Field Trials in the 10,000m, won the 2024 U.S. 10K road championships, and placed 8th overall at the 2024 TCS New York City Marathon. It's a tremendous honor for me to share my podcast with Olympic legend and humanitarian, Billy Mills.  Billy Mills was born in 1938 and grew up on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota, home to the Oglala Lakota Nation. Billy had a very difficult childhood, losing his mother, sister, and father by the age of 12. He turned to running as both an escape and a source of discipline. After his father's passing, Billy attended the Haskell Institute, a U.S. government run boarding school for Native American children. Schools like Haskell were controversial for their forced assimilation, physical and emotional abuse, and systematically trying to erase their students Indigenous identities. Billy, though, had a positive experience at Haskell, where he met his coach Tony Coffin, who became somewhat of a father figure to him. Coffin recognized Billy's talent and helped nurture his running abilities, providing him with the foundation that would later lead to his collegiate and Olympic success. Also, during his time at Haskell, Billy spent one of his summers as a counselor at Camp Greylock in Beckett, Massachusetts, which is the summer camp that I went to many years later and is a very important part of my life. So it's very special for me to share this link with Billy. At Haskell, Billy won multiple state championships in track and cross country, earning him a scholarship to the University of Kansas, where Billy would be coached by Bill Easton. Easton was a highly respected track and field coach who led Kansas to multiple NCAA championships, and at Kansas, Billy was one of the best distance runners in the country. He was a three time All American, won multiple Big Eight titles, and was runner up in the 1960 cross country championships. Through all of this, however, Billy faced numerous challenges, including discrimination at every level, including from Easton, hypoglycemia, and struggles with self doubt. At times, Billy even contemplated suicide, and in his senior year, he walked off the track and quit the team completely. Fortunately for Billy, the University of Kansas is also where he met and began dating a young woman named Patricia Pat Collins. Pat played a crucial role in Billy's journey, supporting him through the challenges he faced as an athlete and as a Native American navigating the world of elite sports. After graduating Kansas, Billy married Pat, joined the U. S. Marine Corps, and resumed training with the goal of not just making the U. S. Olympic team and not just winning a medal, but winning the gold medal in the 10K. Which he did. In 1964, Billy qualified for the Tokyo Olympics in the 10, 000 meter race, where he stunned the world with a historic, come from behind victory, becoming the first and still the only American, or even the only person from the Western Hemisphere, to win the gold medal in the event. He also remains the only Native American, other than Jim Thorpe, to win a gold medal in the Olympics. His triumph is considered one of the greatest Olympic upsets and victories of all time. Since Billy's victory in the 1964 Tokyo Games, Billy and Pat have dedicated their lives to giving back, co founding Running Strong for American Indian Youth, an organization that empowers Indigenous communities through health, education, and self sufficiency programs. Their journey is one of perseverance, cultural pride, and spreading a message of unity through diversity. All values that are very much at the heart of the Charity Miles community. Which naturally, is why we want to also thank our partners at Brooks Running who are very much champions for these values as well. For over a century, Brooks has been propelled by a never-ending curiosity with how humans move. It drives their every decision and every innovation. Because they believe movement is the key to feeling more alive. And we're all moving towards something. It could be the top of a mountain, a first-ever 5K,  peace of mind after a stressful day, or an Olympic gold medal.  It could be a cure for Parkinson's, a cleaner planet, fair play, or the strength that comes from our diversity. So… let's run there. With gear and experiences specifically designed to take you to that place. Whether it's a headspace, a feeling, or a finish line. Let's run there. [New album cover alert!] Another year, another live podcast from Chicago, and this one was even bigger with 250+ in attendance! This episode has everything you would want from a live podcast including a completely-unplanned, surprise guest, who turned Kara into a little bit of an awkward mess ;).  The show starts with some life and travel updates. Des shares how her latest 2 x 6 mile marathon workout went in prep for NYC, and Kara talks about her disdain for airports and Halloween. Don't worry... the whole bit is saved by images of Des as the Swinging Friar, iykyk.  They then turn their attention to a Chicago Marathon preview with a focus on the key American storylines up front. Who wins in the battle of Zach Panning and CJ Albertson? Will the American record go down on the women's side? Oh wait... who is that in the audience who is racing with the elites on Sunday? Enter surprise guest, complete with a birthday serenade from the audience! Unable to top that further, Des and Kara turn to audience questions (captured in full audio by our trusty wireless mic) and then an Olipop Top 5 that you don't want to miss.  Of course, thank you to everyone who came out for the show and to our sponsors for this episode - presenting sponsor Brooks Running and Olipop. As usual, to support the podcast and get your Olipop fix, use code NOBODYASKEDUS for 15% off at drinkolipop.com. And, we also have to thank our gracious hosts - Fleet Feet Chicago - who always do it right. If you are in Chicago, get your running gear from Fleet Feet Chicago!

"Of course making the Olympic team would be amazing, but it's not going to define who I am. It's not an end-all-be-all for me." When Jess McClain lined up at the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials earlier this year, she did so as an under-the-radar, unsponsored, self-coached athlete — and she finished fourth, becoming the official Team USA Alternate in the marathon. Just a few weeks ago, Jess competed in the 10,000m at the U.S. Track & Field Trials, this time as a Brooks Running-sponsored (still self-coached) one to watch — and, again, she finished fourth! In this conversation, Jess talks about being a two-time fourth-place finisher at the Trials, and about how she reflects on each race. She breaks down the 10,000m race, talks about how life has changed since the Marathon Trials in February, and shares what's next.
