In this episode my friend Avery and I discuss our film “The Meet Up” releasing December 20th. The film examines the good and the bad of the United States justice system and how it effects minorities. Most importantly this film shows how law enforcement can still stand on the principles this country was founded upon which was “Freedom and Justice for all.” This is a powerful episode that will inspire and encourage you! Running isn't for everyone, long distance running appeals to an even smaller crowd Some runners choose to run distances that can only be described as "Ultra". Avery Collins, a professional ultra runner joined me to talk about what it takes to run 50, 100, 200 miles & everything in between! Avery is also a cannabis advocate, he talks at length about how he uses THC & CBD for training & recovery, and how how cannabis has become very common in the ultra scene. Super nice guy, great stories & a lot of great intel. Hope you enjoy!
Avery Collins and Sabrina Stanley are the power couple of ultra running for a reason - and not just because the name is catchy and helpful when promoting their coaching business - Power Couple Coaching. Their accomplishments in ultra running are legit. Since his rookie season in 2012, Avery has dedicated his life to being the top runner in his sport. In 2017, he won every race he entered, including the Georgia Death Race, Quest for the Crest 50k, Hahn's Peak Hill Climb, Continental Divide Trail Run 50k, and Grindstone 100 Miler and finished 6th at Western States. In 2019, Avery set a course record at Quest for the Crest 50k, he won the Fatdog 120-miler, and finished 3rd at Trail de Bourbon as the highest placing American male ever). Ultrarunner Magazine named Sabrina the 8th best American Female in 2018 and ranked her 5th in 2019. She's finished first female at the last 11-ultras she's entered. In 2018, Sabrina won Hardrock 100. The following year, she won HURT 100 and recently became the first American (male or female) to win Diagonal Des Fous. It will become obvious early in this interview that Sabrina won't be happy until she's ranked number 1, and we don't doubt her for a second. In this episode, we talk to Sabrina and Avery about their goals to be the top ultra runners in the world. The couple recalls the horrific car crash that left Avery unable to race for six months, his painful rehab and struggle with the possibility that he might never run again. Sabrina shares her mental approach to the sport and striving to be the best and the ultra running community frowning upon runners who outwardly express a desire to win every time they step foot on a trail. And finally, we talk about weed. I mean, there's a reason Avery's Instagram handle is @runninghigh. Avery shares his thoughts on cannabis and its use for running, training, and recovery. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/werunthis/support
Sabrina Stanley is a trail and ultra runner who lives and trains in Silverton, CO. Sabrina’s resume includes a win at HURT 100, Grand Raid La Reunion, and Hardrock as well as an F3 finish at Western States. While Sabrina’s wins are impressive what really makes her glow is her drive, determination, and focus. Sabrina sets big goals and does the work to make them a reality. In Volume 1 of Eat Clean, Run Dirty Magazine Sabrina writes an article titled How to Coach Yourself. When I first approached Sabrina about writing an article I asked her about tips on choosing a coach and finding a good fit. Sabrina herself has coached many runners alongside her partner Avery Collins through their Power Couples Coaching. It was so refreshing to have Sabrina say that folks do not need a coach at all, With a little planning anyone can map out a successful training plan for their next big race. In a beautiful and comprehensive feature article in Eat Clean, Run Dirty Magazine, she shows us all how to do just that. To accompany this fantastic article we’ve recruiting Colorado’s Jordan Chapell and his photo series from one of my personal bucket list races, The High Lonesome 100. Jordan captures the rugged and sweeping landscapes in a way that the viewer can feel the grandeur of the course and the incredible difficulty in navigating it. The images are captivating and inspired. In today’s podcast, I sit down to chat with Jordan and Sabrina to do a deep dive on the How To Coach Yourself article. I am your host, Jessica Vandenbush, and this is the Eat Clean Run Dirty Podcast.
Avery Collins is a professional ultra runner out of Silverton, Colorado. He's done some of the biggest and baddest races on planet earth and he isn't slowing down. In fact, he's flying high! They discuss the breaking up of the stigma of cannabinoids and the growing usage of them in athletics, especially the NBA and NFL. Amazingly CBD and Marijuana are actually differentiated by just one atom bond, and the main distinction would be that there are no psychoactive qualities in CBD. 8:40 - 10:45 Either THC or CBS in an isolated form does not have the same impact as it does together, which is something they call Entourage Effect. 10:52 - 13:50 How big of a business has CBD become? 14:01 - 15:36 What is hemp? From the Without Compromise show notes: Avery grew up in the Midwest, far from the mountains of Colorado that he now calls home. He found running after years of playing basketball and the unique suffering of the sport quickly drew him into longer and longer events. That and the fact he was a broke college student that couldn’t afford a gym membership, running made total sense. Right as he began garnering big wins and making a name for himself, he and his girlfriend, Sabrina, were struck by a semi on the highway. Avery suffered some major injuries that caused him to rethink his direction in life and if he’d every get back out on the trail. After an arduous six months, he was able to start to run again. Fast forward a few years and Avery is now one of the fastest ultrarunners in the world and frequently podiums at iconic races like the Georgia Death Race, Colorado 200, Fat Dog 120, Hurt 100, and dozens more. He finished 6th overall at Western States in 2017. Avery Collins is new to the sport of ultrarunning and absolutely crushing the ultra scene. He's shooting to be the first American to win Tour De Geants and already has an impressive race resume.
Had a great time focusing on Avery Collins the elite runner, but we do discuss the somewhat controversial topic of his cannabis use outside of racing. https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/weedpodcast The recent controversial article featured on Greatist entitled "" starts like this... "It’s a typical Wednesday evening. After a long run, Andrew, who works in digital media in New York City, is following his standard post-run routine. Like most runners, he’ll quickly cool down, stretch, drink water, and maybe grab a post-workout snack. Unlike many runners, he’ll also smoke pot. The avid runner and cyclist, whose racing résumé includes the Umstead 100 Ultra, typically lights up immediately before his athletic activities and usually within an hour or two post-sweat session. Andrew isn’t alone in his habit—in fact, combining cannabis and sport has become an underground trend in distance-running culture. Ultra runners such as Avery Collins and Jen Shelton have admitted to running under the influence of marijuana. And former professional runner Chris Barnicle, a cannabis advocate living in Los Angeles, calls himself the “world’s fastest stoner” on Twitter. Pro-cannabis running groups, like Run on Grass in Denver, are dedicated to staying fit and educating others about cannabis, while online communities like Cannafit and NORML Athletics also promote cannabis' association with healthy living. And it's not just runners who are experimenting with weed. Bodybuilders may hit a bong to prevent soreness and sleep better, while action sports athletes such as mountain bikers, skiers, and snowboarders may light up on the lift to get in the zone, loosen up, or release their inhibitions. Even some athletes participating in niche sports such as skeleton, bobsledding, and ice hockey toke up." Last year, in my own article , I delved into whether THC, CBD, or other ingredients in marijuana actually enhance athletic performance on a molecular level. Then, just a few months ago, , describing a San Francisco gym called "Power Plant Fitness", where clients have the option to bring their own cannabis or order edibles, the gym’s preferred form of cannabis, while they are at the gym. A delivery service brings desired edibles to the gym within 15 minutes after clients place orders, and the gym has a designated space for those inhaling marijuana. The gym, which advertises itself as the world's first cannabis gym, touts using the drug for pain, focus and meditation. With the growing popularity of the combination of cannabis and sport, I decided it was high time to get an industry leader on the podcast to take a deep dive into whether weed really helps with exercise performance, and the current state of marijuana in the sporting industry. So my guest on this podcast is Tim Moxey, owner of Tim Moxey and botanicaSEATTLE maks some of the best tasting and, in my opinion, healthiest marijuana and hemp based edibles that exist. Take, for example, the label of one of my favorite products that they produce, a tiny Altoid sized product called "", which are infused with ginkgo leaf, siberian ginseng, indian gooseberry, echinacea root, chamomile, california poppy, cinnamon, peppermint, ginger and more. Born in the Pacific Northwest, Moxey's Mints are crafted in small batches to promote wellbeing in mind and body. Each pastille is formulated with herbal synergists tailored to elevate the cannabis experience. Moxey’s herbal allies can brighten your day with Siberian Ginseng and Gingko, lower stress and allow you to kick back with California Poppy and Camomile and restore and maintain balance in mind and body with Indian Gooseberry and Echinacea. So how did Tim come up with all these ideas that spawned an enormously successful edibles company? After studying Physics at Warwick Uni, Tim joined British investment bank Barclays de Zoete Wedd, with roles on the derivatives, risk and strategy teams before getting an MBA from Dartmouth’s Tuck School in 2001. After a stint in the Australian division of strategic management consulting firm, Bain and Company, Tim left to build specialist triathlon wetsuit company ‘blueseventy’ into the leading brand in the sport. He then went on to found ‘nuun’, a pioneering hydration company which spawned a new category in sports nutrition. In 2012 Tim was living in the U.K. when he read an article in ‘The Economist’ about Washington State voting to legalize cannabis. It had a profound effect and he was convinced that the socioeconomic benefits from a legal framework far outweighed the prohibition model. He promptly relocated to the US to build a company that would set the standard in a regulated environment. If you're a fan of ultrarunning and use the Internet, you're probably aware of the latest social media dust up over performance enhancing drugs, in this case cannabis. Dave and Avery got together with us in person to continue the conversation. From Dispatch's perspective, the responses and judgements being thrown at both Avery and Dave over social media in the past couple days have created separation in our ultra running community. Our hope is that in sitting down to talk together we can help reconnect in our differences and see that both of these guys ultimately come from a loving place for the sport who share many of the same passions. Jeremy Hendricks also stopped by to sketch up some artistic interpretations of the conversation. And of course a shoutout to Upslope Brewing! We happened to recently do a #KitchenSesh show with Avery just before this, so check out more of Avery's backstory here: http://www.dispatchradio.com/kitchensesh-avery-collins-devon-olson/
***Please note before listening that cannabis is thoroughly discussed in this episode. If that doesn't strike your fancy, please skip this one*** We’re joined in the kitchen by ultra runners Avery Collins and Devon Olson. Kelly P hangs out to drop some knowledge, and why not add Ryan Lassen and Eric Edgerton in for some fun too! Mad props to Avery for winning the Georgia Death Race last week! This is a gnarly “68-ish” mile race put on by Run Bum, and by winning Avery scored a chance to toe the line at the big one, Western States 100. You can probably guess what we spend a lot of time talking about… And like any #KitchenSesh this is more about hanging out, chatting, and having fun than it is a scripted show. Shout out to Avery’s sponsor’s: While Mary's Medicinals and The Farm Co. were talked about the most, in addition to cannibas sponsors Avery also has… an underwear sponsor!? Saxxunderwear. And of course actual running biz sponsors too inov-8 All Terrain RunningHoney Stinger and Farm To Feet. Also props to Devon for a top 10 finish at Behind The Rocks! How’d it go against those Salomon Runners
