Tim Tollefson wears many hats and came to Singletrack with important business. Tim is newly on the board of directors for Runners for Public Lands. The environmental organization just recently shared the uncomfortable news that our trails and trail races may be significantly impacted this coming year and beyond by the U.S. Forest Service budget and staffing shortfalls. Luckily for us, Tim is a man with a plan and offers hands on experience, and with that solutions and ideas on how we can get involved. It's high time for trail runners to take action. "If you want to have an incredible event experience, go to an event run by an athlete." That was the advice that Rebecca Rusch offered up in Episode 9 of Second Nature, so on this episode, we're speaking with trail running legend Tim Tollefson about mammoth trailfest. As an athlete, he's built this event from scratch, and now he's here to share everything he's learned - which would apply to anyone trying to start their own event, no matter the sport. mammoth trailfest.: https://www.mammothtrailfest.com/ Tim's BPC: https://www.instagram.com/p/C7MrwPuxQFU/?igsh=MTc4MmM1YmI2Ng== Aaron's BPC: https://content.rapha.cc/us/en/story/laels-ride-around-the-world Check out Lael Wilcox: https://www.instagram.com/laelwilcox/ Sign up for our newsletter: http://www.secondnature.media Follow us on Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/secondnature.media
K-Pop star Tim Tollefson, who you may know from Instagram, drops in between the pines to talk about being a pro runner for a decade, how much money he makes, and his almost unbelievable wins at UTMB and Western States. Plus, get your very own Between Two Pines trucker hat, available now in the UltraSignup merch store. And get 10% off all Janji gear when you use code BTP10.
Known for his love of donuts, dirt, and running with a massive smile, Tim Tollefson is a professional ultra-runner for CRAFT Sportswear that is facilitating difficult conversations around mental health in sports. Throughout his career he has won ultramarathons across the globe in distances from 50K to 100 miles. Tim is a 3 time USATF National Trail Champion, and a 2 time US Olympic Marathon Trials qualifier. While on the surface he carefully curated a balanced life of perfection, for more than 20 years he has battled body dysmorphia, OCD, general anxiety disorder, and an eating disorder. Tim is a licensed physical therapist at the Mammoth SPORT Center and founder and head crafter at Mammoth Trail Fest - a community oriented trail running event hosted in his home of Mammoth Lakes, CA every September.
From the outside, Tim Tollefson appeared to have everything as a runner. He was a collegiate steeplechase champion, a 2-time US Olympic Marathon Trials qualifier, and is one of the country's most accomplished ultra runners. He podiumed at UTMB in both his 100K and 100 mile debuts, and went on to win the Javelina Jundred, Lavaredo Ultra Trail 120K, and the Ultra Trail Australia 100K. But appearances can be deceiving, and a focus on appearances can be devastating. Tim suffered from body dysmorphia and its accompanying OCD for two decades. As he relates in “What Goes Unsaid,” a film project he participated in last year for World Mental Health Day, “I've spent a lifetime hating myself for what I'm not, instead of being thankful for what I am.” Now, largely through his involvement with the running community, he's come to appreciate running for the gift that it is. The Golden Trail World Series athletes and crew landed in the United States for the two final stages of the circuit and another adventure in the West of the United States. We raced at the Pikes Peak Ascent in Manitou Springs (CO) where Remi Bonnet set a new course record, beating the legendary mark by Matt Carpenter that was set 30 years ago, and at the new Mammoth Trail Fest 26k in Mammoth Lakes (CA), organized by Tim Tollefson. Besides the races, it was great to share some days together with other amazing athletes and interesting people, in some of the most beautiful places we've ever been to. This episode is an inside story told by the athletes on their experience at Pikes Peak and Mammoth, extending their reflections to their 2023 season. I hope you enjoy it, and thanks to everyone who has contributed to record this episode! Give all the athletes a follow on Instagram

We tend to think professional athletes live perfect, charmed lives. Genetically gifted, they effortlessly conquer physical challenges with confidence, propelled by physiques unattainable by mere mortals. From the outside looking in, Tim Tollefson is one such example. One of the world's most successful ultra-runners, Tim has a slew of impressive race victories to his name. These accomplishments matched with his winning smile and handsome looks would lead anyone to believe that he's an exemplar of strength and health. But behind it all, Tim has waged a private, two-decade-long battle with body dysmorphia and disordered eating that not only compromised his athleticism, but completely debilitated him, producing a never-ending cycle of anxiety, loneliness, and self-hatred. Today Tim shares his experiences and the path he's forged to reclaim his sense of self-worth and balance in a world (and sport) that pushes us to extremes. He opens up about his decision to go public with his struggles, the role of social media in perpetuating negative body image, the tools he uses to uphold a positive relationship with food and his body, and the power of community in the recovery process. If you are struggling with an eating disorder and are in need of support, please reach out to the National Eating Disorders Association. For a 24-hour crisis line, text “NEDA” to 741741. In a world inundated with diet speak, honest and authentic conversations about food and loving our bodies are more important than ever. I have so much respect for Tim's strength, courage, and vulnerability. This one is powerful. Tim Tollefson is one of the most well known and accomplished American ultra runners in the world. Since signing his first pro contract 9 years ago, Tim has powered his way up mountains and varied terrain to stand on podiums all over the world, including the most competitive of them UTMB, where he twice placed 3rd as well as 2nd in the CCC. In addition to a long list of 1st place finishes, Tim is well known and loved in the ultra community simply for who he is as a person. Last year, Tim shared a raw and personal story of struggle, which I highly recommend you check out (link below) and he created and launched the first ever MAMMOTH TRAIL FEST (which happens to be smack in the middle of my favorite mountain range, Eastern Sierra). Check out the details of the trail fest and sign up today! It's a once in a lifetime experience that you don't want to miss! (Eddie and I plan to be there this year!) Grazie, as always
My guest on this episode is Hilary Matheson, a very talented female creative in the sport of trail and ultrarunning as well as an accomplished ultrarunner in her own right .She also just happens to be my girlfriend and adventure partner. In today's conversation, we talk about her start in the creative space from her typical 9-5 corporate life, how she wants to impact and influence more women to do the same, some of early health issues and how that helped shape her perspective on her life and the story of how we met. We also chat with first-time race director and professional athlete Tim Tollefson on the heels of his first event at the Mammoth Trail Fest. Joined by my partner Hilary Matheson, we asked him what it was like putting on an event of this scale for the first time in Mammoth Lakes, how it served as a salve for a disappointing 2022 summer run season, what we have to look forward to in 2023 and much more. + Watch on YouTube (Tim) https://youtu.be/alpOkeNl3A4 + Watch on YouTube (Hilary) https://youtu.be/ds7LiA9sODU + Hilary's YouTube Channel https://www.youtube.com/hilaryann + Hilary's Instagram https://www.instagram.com/thehilaryann/ + Mammoth Trail Fest https://www.mammothtrailfest.com/ ______ Patreon.com/BillyYang Instagram.com/BillyYangPod Twitter.com/BillyYang Facebook.com/BillyYangPodcast

If you enjoyed it, aiutatemi a diffondere il progetto: condividete l'episodio sui social, mettete tante stelline su Spotify e Apple Podcast! Tim Tollefson a professional runner for Hoka based in Mammoth Lakes, CA. Tim probably needs no introduction, but of course he is one of the most decorated mountain ultra trail runners of all time, most notably with podium finishes at the 2015 CCC, 2016 UTMB and then again at 2017 UTMB which most ultra historians would say was the most competitive 100 miler ever in our sports history. In this conversation, we talk about his focus these days on the Western States 100, his new role in the sport as a Race Director for the Mammoth Trail Fest taking place this September, his thoughts on athlete-brand relationships, and the importance of training for mental aspects of the sport.Timestamps:(2:30) - introducing the Mammoth Trail Fest(6:26) - festival type format for ultra racing(7:46) - exciting features of the Mammoth Trail Fest(9:46) - race permitting, economic benefits(12:38) - affiliating with a larger race series(15:16) - relationships with fellow race directors(17:33) - inspiration for race directing(19:07) - going full-time on race directing(21:38) - whether work gets in the way of running(24:30) - creating stability for professional runners (27:16) - whether performances improve going full-time(30:34) - brainstorming the training day to day of a full-time runner(33:34) - improvements to the athlete-brand relationship(39:02) - the black box of athlete contracts(41:47) - curiosity for UTMB(46:44) - whether the Western States - UTMB double is possible(51:50) - how training will look different for the 2022 Western States 100(56:40) - whether false humility is an issue in our sport(60:48) - identifying and acting on mental burnout(64:26) - whether the psychological works quiets the mind(67:59) - mental approach continuedLinks:Mammoth Trail FestFollow Tim on InstagramAdditional Episodes You May Enjoy:#52 - Mike Foote | Race Directing, Skyrunning Speculation, Future Of Ultrarunning Events, UTMB Influences#51 - Anton Krupicka | Trail Running Culture, Pro Athlete Lifestyle, Influence, Self-Reflection#50 - Tom Evans | Pro Ultrarunning Playbook, UTMB 2022, Trail Running TeamsSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/singletracknews)

Episode 43 is an exciting one! On the weekend 2/3rd May, Hoka One One held the IsoRun festival that consisted a 5k, 10k 21k and 64 k all run at different times over the two days. Athletes could choose which or all of their races they participated in. Doing all meant you were part of the 100k slam. Participants ran in every state and territory of Australia, as well as almost 20 countries around the world including Denmark, Portugal, Zimbabwe, Brazil, the USA and Thailand. At last count, the Hoka team received and processed 1,037 finisher results. The all-embracing tone for the festival was set by David King with his worldly Welcome to Country, a moment that was shared with running friends near and far. I myself participated in the slam. I had been on reduced kilometres due to a change of focus in my training and trying to get over post-GSER niggles. I had also just two days before slipped down my stairs in a moment of being uncoordinated and distracted and badly bruised my coccyx. This hurt tremendously throughout the run. In spite of this, I completed the slam and felt fantastic to be a part of a larger community. To me that is what these sort of event is all about. As part of ensuring this event encompassed the worldwide running community, Hoka athletes from America were involved in this race. I was fortunate enough to be able to interview a few of these. Jim Walmsley needs no introduction, but I will anyway! Jim was named ‘ultra runner’ of the year for four years in a row by Ultrarunning Magazine. He is the course record holder of some of the most competitive ultras in the world, including Western States, Tarawera and the Lake Sonoma 50. For the Isorunfest , Jim ran the marathon. Darcy Piceu is a mum, professional ultra runner and therapist/counsellor who lives and trains in Boulder Colorado. She has been running for over 19 years and racing ultras for most of that time. With over 100 ultra races under her belt, she has finished many of these in the top 3. She has won the Hardrock 100 3 times as well as many other tough races, as well as holding the FKT on the John Muir Trail (which is 222 miles). For the isrunfest, Darcy ran the full slam. She was fifth female. TimTollefson is a physical therapist at the Mammoth SPORT Center and Performance Lab. Tim is the 2014 USATF 50K Trail National Champion, the 2016 3rd Place UTMB (Ultra Trail Du Mont Blanc) winner, and a two-time Olympic Trials marathon qualifier. He completed the marathon distance run. Mike Wardian is a prolific racer who I recently interviewed when he won the Quarantine Backyard ultra. He followed that achievement with a 12 hour run the following weekend. For the isorunfest Mike ran the 100k slam and was fifth male. My interview with him had to fit in around his latest events, 4 miles every 4 hours for 48 hours. Does he ever rest??? I really hope you enjoyed this Hoka One One Isorunfest special! Later in the week I will be putting out a podcast with the male winner of the 100k slam, Dion Finocchiaro. Dion lives in Melbourne andis a very accomplished runner, as well as being a down-to-earth and humble guy. I’m sure you’ll enjoy that one too! Now is the time in your training to prepare to prepare. Training is about long-term development. You can’t decide four weeks before a race that you want to start training for it. Training starts now, months ahead of time. If you want quality, structure training email or DM me to get started. If you have enjoyed this podcast please support it by going on over to apple podcasts to subscribe, rate and review. This lifts the visibility and credibility of the podcast and enables me to continue getting high-profile athletes on!

An interview with Tim Tollefson before UTMB 2018.
Welcome to episode 82 of the Final Surge podcast with our guest this week Zach Cole. Zach has built a new website called HopDash.com which is helping connect runners to running locations and groups. It is a great way to find a group to run with when you travel, or maybe just to discover new running areas in your city. You launched a new site called hop dash.com and I want to dig into it, but before we do that we like to introduce our listeners to our guests find out a little about who you are, if you could tell our listeners how you got started with running? College basketball player Started running with a morning group after college Continued to train Joined track team You talk about how you started running with a few groups, HopDash your new site is about running with groups, so can you give us a background on the site? Discover running groups in your city or places you visit Traveled a lot and always looking for running clubs could join for a workout Running is more exciting when you can connect with people while doing it Do you find that groups are comprised of similar runners or are most groups varied in who is running with them? Most groups have good variety Most have some new runners and some more advanced When I look at your HopDash and I click on one of the cities, let’s say Boston, on the right I see interesting places to run and then on the bottom I see a calendar and each day has a different set of runs and each of those runs dots in the upper corner, one green, two yellow, three orange dots what do those mean? Can be confusing, reworking that Intent to show how easy or difficult a given workout may be Assigning the difficulty is difficult because most groups have a wide variety on the same day How does it work, who updates the workouts? There is an input field where clubs can create their team and workouts Using a Google Sheets API Will be making it more scaleable in the future The interesting places to run, are they user-generated too? First few cities built from experience Now users submitting tips and ideas to be included As it builds out will make it searchable with filters How do I know if the group I am looking at is more casual vs more serious? When you read the descriptions of the clubs and workouts it gives you a lot of information on what to expect on that run External link to running clubs website to learn more about them You are relying on user feedback and people entering their information, so how do you see this growing? Contribute link at top of website Can add city and club and workouts Several cities being worked on right now Who are some of the interesting people you have met while traveling? Ran in Vancouver with a group there In Boston last year ran with The November Project TrackSmith Group in Boston In NY this winter ran in the 'Bomb Cyclone' had classic NY character What is the hardest or most memorable place you ran? Last fall ran in Mammoth with Mammoth Track Club on a track at 7k feet Half marathon run up to 9k feet and swam in a freezing lake Tim Tollefson showed another trail run that was incredible Auburn CA during Western States and a trail run it was over 100 degrees, no shade, 2k feet of gain was the hardest run We see training professional groups forming around the country, but also we see many local training groups and running communities. Why do you think these are growing? Something powerful in training with a group A routine helps grow individual and group success Fun to have other people to cheer for and be cheered on Investing in other people's success helps all involved Success keeps people going Final Surge 5 questions in under a minute Favorite endurance/running book? - Once a Runner Current trainers you are wearing? - Challenger 3's Favorite race? - Santa Cruz to Capitola Wharf Favorite recovery meal or recovery drink? - Burger and Beer Your favorite workout - 1600 repeats How to connect with you? - Hopdash: - Zach on Twitter
