This week, Sara and Runa take the concept of a visual novel book club to its next logical step and join an exciting, breathtaking, Dokidoki Literature Club! What will happen when we spend our days reading novels and discussing manga and writing poetry with cute girls? Will we get to snack on cute cupcakes and get to know our fellow club members? Will we have heartpounding discussions about our favorite literary tropes? Well, whatever happens, I'm sure it will be extremely safe and normal!Dokidoki Literature Club!(2017) is a visual novel that begins as a very cute, lighthearted dating sim where you play as a faceless high school boy at the beginning of a new week, unsure of what club he might join in school and without any particular direction for the time being. He quickly encounters his childhood friend and neighbor, Sayori, who coaxes him (with the promise of cupcakes) to try out the literature club. Once there, Sayori introduces him to the other current members: Yuri, a tall and introverted girl who reads intricate fantasy and sci-fi novels; Natsuki, a small and contrary girl who loves baking and reading manga; and the club president, Monika, who your protagonist notes is one of the most popular and beautiful girls in school. As you spend more time in the literature club, you'll start to grow closer to Sayori, Yuri, and Natsuki, all while Monika is getting closer and closer to something as well...Please note that, if you haven't played DDLC before, the game features explicit images and themes of self-harm, suicide and suicide ideation, and unreality. The game itself has a more complete list of content warnings and we'll list content warnings for our discussion in the episode below, but we wanted to give you a heads up in case you plan to read along before you listen! As always, if you like the show please leave us a review! DDLC is a free dating(?)/psychological horror game that was a joy to play.
"Never judge a book by it's cover" as the old saying goes. Well the cover of this video game is a hard pill to swallow. Chris really has the guys step out of their comfort zone here, and has everyone take a leap of faith with only 2 instructions. Don't research anything about this game, just jump in blind Trust me, I've never lead you astray before (which is debatable) Doki Doki Literature Club took the internet by storm in 2017 and is one of the highest rated games on Steam. On the surface DDLC seems like the most "Waifu, Weeb" thing you've ever laid your eyes on. Except for the warning label, in big bold labels. "This game is not suitable for children or those who are easily disturbed." We will talk spoilers in this episode around the 36:13 (36:13) mark so if any of this sounds interesting to you. There are so many tangents in this one I don't even know how to begin to describe the topics. Here's an attempt: the shocking conclusion to the "Madiha fled to Russia" kayfabe; DDLC is not DDLG; our hell future is gonna be terrible; Tooth & Tail, a herzog zwei about furries who eat each other; who won Starcraft II, which is free now; Esther abducts Madiha to the GACHA BLACK SITE secret prison to discuss Lootboxes, and to then talk very earnestly about wanting to roll more on gachas; Esther needs to escape Granblue Fantasy; Gudaguda Honnoji and will anyone be able to roll a Scathach; the Fate universe is the most fucked up transmedia empire ever; Gen Urobuchi quotes mean it's time for the return of MADiha; MADiha is uncomfortably irate and violent for 5 minutes (she is very sorry); Lootboxes BANNED in the Netherlands (?); Nier Automata doesn't deserve to be goaty (don't @ us).
