2025 Rerun Notes: In anticipation of this month's incoming C1E99: "Listener Picks - vol 3", we are rerunning both previous installments of the Listener Picks trilogy this month! Today's rerun is the inaugural installment, from all the way back in 2018. It features a semi-standard intro and outro, and a standard mixtape - with the exception of the fact that every track is selected by the listeners (40 tracks - 18 contributors) - and that the intro and outro are guest-curated by a collage of 11 of those same 18 contributors. It was also, at the time, the longest non-retrospective episode in show history - and featured a long, glorious outtakes reel at the end! C1E99 will share a great many of these same attributes! It will feature 70 tracks, collectively selected by 8 listeners (6 of which also contributed to today's rerun (and 3 of which were also featured in vol 2). At just under 3.5hrs, it will also be the longest mixtape in non-retrospective Ch 1 history (even if this new record nearly doubles the [then] record which the 2018 episode set). And it will also feature a semi-standard intro and outro, largely guest-hosted by a collage of the contributing listeners. In fact, unlike today's rerun, this time every single track contributor also contribute their voices to the intro and outro (except for the one which prizes anonimity and requested a text-to-speech be used in his place). And I also anticipate 99 to feature a fairly decent outtakes reel - though not quite as robust and spectacular as today's rerun. So, where vol 2 is less a "sequel" to vol 1 per se, and more of an "omake" (or an "outtakes") of vol 1, the upcoming vol 3 will be the true sequel to today's rerun. The long-awaited "echo". The "let's do this exact same thing one more time". In fact, due to a joint failure of double-checking from both St. John and the contributing listener, C1E99 will even feature one track that was featured in today's rerun. So be on the look out for that and see if you can spot which one it is before the reveal! And yes, it even was the same contributing listener in both episodes! D'oh! :-) Lastly, as always: all the usual caveats about how much worse my production quality was back in 2018 than it is today, and not to judge the current state of NNR production quality by this rerun. If you are new, and this is your first exposure to NNR, and you enjoyed the content, but were put off by the production, either go back and listen to a recent episode, such as C1E98 or C1E96....or perhaps even better, keep your eyes peeled for C1E99, which is basically this all over again, but at 2025's far improved production quality standards! And with that, please enjoy the absolute block party that is C1E40 - Listener Picks - vol 1, and keep an eye out for the trilogy's incoming 2nd (rerun) and 3rd (fresh) installments! Cheers! Cheers! -------------------------------------------------------------- Original Show Notes: Today's broadcast is Episode 40 for Theme Thursday, December 20th, 2018. Feed will include Channels 1, 2, 3, and any future channels not yet planned. Feed will also include podcasts in high quality, stereo where applicable, and episodes will never expire off the feed. Therefore it is STRONGLY recommended that you subscribe to this Nerd Noise Radio feed and bypass all others. This one will contain all their content anyway. Option 2: If you're ONLY interested in Channel 1 ("Noise from the Hearts of Nerds") episodes, and not in any of the other content that is or will be offered by Nerd Noise Radio, there is a Channel 1-specific feed. But it's hosted on a free account, rather than an upgraded account like the "All Channels Feed" with lower quality sound (mono, I believe), a maximum 2hrs per month of content (so if the month's episodes run longer than that, they may need to be trimmed), and episodes expire off the feed forever after 90 days. It is STRONGLY recommended for most listeners to subscribe to the All-Channels feed instead. However, if you really are only interested in Channel 1 content, here's the RSS: http://www.buzzsprout.com/77944.rss Our episodes will also appear on our Nerd Noise Radio YouTube Channel - just search for Nerd Noise Radio, you'll find us! Here's today's episode: [LINK] Additionally, there are YouTube Playlists you can follow, both an "All Channels" Feed (recommended), as well as channel-specific feeds. You can find them here: Nerd Noise Radio Network - All Channels Podcast Feed Nerd Noise Radio - Channel 1 podcast Nerd Noise Radio is now available on Twitch as well! Then join us again in January (date TBD) for a very special announcement about the future of the show. It's not going away - far from it! But big changes are coming for 2019. Make sure you tune it! This week on The Free Cheese, they made 25 years already? Reflecting on the two and a half decade of video games released since the year 2000, we share our top ten and why we picked them. We also discuss how games have and have not changed in that time and what we expect will be in our top ten in 2050.
The news cycle of 2025 has somehow once again broken us so severely that we have simply just opted out and decided to talk about Silksong, a game that people waited so long for that they created a whole new genre of shitposting. But Super Mario 3D Land is one that slips through my memory cracks a lot, and dare I say, for a Mario game I think it's actually a little underrated...It doesn't really do anything new or special, but it's a rock-solid 3D platformer, it brings back classic tunes and power-ups from previous Mario games, and while I think it's a little bit of a tech demo for the 3DS's 3D features, the fact remains that it's got that same level of polish most of my favourite plumber's games have.Pending RTG Hall of Famer Mark McCue is my guest this week, and while he has a stronger attachment to 3D Land than I do, I think I actually like it a little more than he does. At the end of the day it's me and Mark talking about a Mario game and sprinkling in some comedy stories. On this week's Random Encounter, we're back to business as usual! Not-E3 and the release of the Switch 2 hit us like a hammer. But now that things have finally settled down, it's time to chat about some games!First up, Aleks gets a chance to talk up the long-awaited Chapters 3+4 of Toby Fox's follow-up to Undertale, Deltarune! Chapters 1+2 released in 2018 and 2021 respectively, so for folks out there starved for Fox's trademark meta-narratives and ear-delighting music, these new chapters are a balm to the SOUL.Then, Zek is here to talk about the new remaster of the PS2-era Atlus action RPG, Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner – Raidou Kuzunoha vs. the Soulless Army, now titled RAIDOU Remastered: The Mystery of the Soulless Army! Now with improved graphics, a revamped combat system, and a slightly shorter title, will fans of Atlus' modern output like Persona 5 and Metaphor: ReFantazio find anything to love in this film-noir, detective-styled world? The Nintendo Switch 2 is out in the world, and the internet sure has a lot to say about it. Jack especially has some thoughts! Long-time listeners or observant newcomers will already know that Indiventure is a fortnightly podcast, which comes with its own benefits and drawbacks. One major plus is that it allows us to keep making this show as an extracurricular hobby without getting burned out; but the downsides include sometimes not being especially timely with our topic, if the latest big release happened to drop during our week off. Knowing that, due to the quirks of our schedule, we'd be recording this a few days before the Switch 2 launched but releasing a week after, we decided to lean all-in to that lack of timeliness and dedicate this episode to a discussion of the Nintendo Switch. Like, the original one, that you've been able to get your hands on since 2017. Talk about keeping a finger on the pulse of pop culture, right? In all seriousness, what better time is there to assess the old Switch's legacy than when its successor has recently taken centre-stage? In particular, with the benefit of eight years' hindsight, we really get into whether the Switch deserves to be remembered as the natural home of indie games in the late-2010s to mid-2020s. Some indies certainly shone on the platform — there was surely a symbiotically beneficial relationship between the Switch and say, Stardew Valley, Hades, Hollow Knight, Celeste, Undertale, Untitled Goose Game, and loads more that we mention but I'm not going to list here because it's not really that kind of episode — but did that reputation built in the console's early days persist through the latter years, which saw upsets like the advent of the Steam Deck coming to eat Nintendo's lunch? As is often the case on Indiventure, the debate gets spirited but not at all heated: Liam literally used to host a YouTube fan channel dedicated to the Switch, so his affection for the platform is evident; it's fair to say that Rachel's love for consoles generally dissipated after the DS era (she's willing to be convinced but only if they ever bring back Nintendogs!); and Rebecca makes the case for the Switch as the enduring home of niche Japanese titles that may not always be true indies but certainly get marketed like them in the west. In this week's hyperfixations, Rachel has enjoyed sci-fi survival game The Alters very much and thinks you should check out her review on GamesRadar to find out why you probably would too. After a year away, Rebecca is once again locked in on a new playthrough of the little indie that could, a.k.a. Baldur's Gate 3. And Liam has recently resubscribed to NowTV and so finds himself finally able to catch up on all the prestige TV he's been missing out on due to not having access to that particular streaming service, like White Lotus, Succession, and The Rehearsal. Plus: Conclave (Liam discovered his hyperfixation in his own, unique, rambling way). Our music was written and performed by Ollie Newbury! Find him on Instagram at @newbsmusic. Show Notes On this week's podcast, Dan and Kris bring you the first 10 20 30 40 of the year, and it's, well, kind of underwhelming. There were a few massive games, to be sure, as well as some acknowledgements of platforms they (Kris) failed to cover last year, but all in all, January was kinda bland. But you should enjoy it anyway! At the top of the show, it was another week of not too many games being played, as Dan gets caught moving furniture in the rain, and Kris drinks way more water than he's used to. Dan did play a little PAD, both of the guys tried the Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters, and Kris finally puts Undertale behind him. Finally, in Week Old News, Ubisoft unsurprisingly continues to be awful, while the VGHF launches their brilliant digital archive, Atari fans perhaps think a little too highly of the VCS, and more. Show Notes On this week's podcast, Dan and Kris catch up with the Alphabet Soup-er Series! It was Kris's pick for the letter S, and he went with Silent Debuggers for TurboGrafx-16. It's certainly an interesting game that makes a heck of a first impression, but was there enough under the hood to gain it a good rating? Let's find out! At the top of the show, Dan lost his eyelashes, which results in far more gross eye goop than one might expect. He also misses eating sushi a whole lot, but at least he got to put a whole heck of a lot of time into Hades! Meanwhile, Kris took a skeleton on a date in Undertale, played an incredibly janky version of Star Wars: Jedi Survivor, bought a new vacuum, and ate an absurdly tall breakfast sandwich. Finally, in Week Old News, it was again an incredibly quiet week, as is wont to happen in January. But the folks who made Anton Blast are happy, the folks who made Apple Vision Pro are sad, and the Toxic Avengers finally get an update. Enjoy! There are countless reasons we play and love RPGs, and often those that become our favorites have powerful stories and characters. But pitting your party against often overwhelming odds requires inspirational music for the optimal effect. In this episode we share both music and RPGs that have inspired US in turn, whether it's through bombastic battle music or lively energy. What RPG soundtracks inspire you? On this episode of Random Encounter, Jono and Hilary geek out over a fantastic book focusing on the localization of beloved indie RPG, Undertale. Video game localizations have come a long way since the days of spoony bards. When we usually think about game localization, we think Japanese to English. But what about the other way around?Legends of Localization is a book series written by professional video game and anime translator Clyde Mandelin. In his latest volume, Legends of Localization Book 3: Undertale, Mandelin walks us through the incredible process of taking Undertale, a Western love letter to JRPGs, and localizing it for Japanese audiences. The book is absolutely loaded with amazing insights, entertaining anecdotes, and fascinating tidbits about the monumental effort it takes to translate and localize this uniquely quirky game. Join Jono and Hilary as they take a deep dive into this fascinating tome!
