Jared and Anne Ladyem (anneladyem.com) return to the world of Yakuza/Like A Dragon to see what's going on with Majima and why he's become a pirate. We discuss the new gameplay elements, how this game is similar to The Man Who Erased His Name, and where the series will go next.Apologies for Jared's audio being a bit funky this week. Hopefully we'll have that fixed soon.
Twitch is going to be destroying a decade of gaming history by limiting all Twitch channels to only 100 hours of highlights on their account, affecting only 0.5% of active channels, which apparently include everyone I know in the speedrunning community. An entire US based team of designers has been laid off by Chinese company NetEase, even though they worked on the hugely successful Marvel Rivals. Limited Run Games has put out a warning regarding some recently released NES cartridges that may damage the cartridge or the console due to faulty voltage regulation. Then we talk with the chat about asset reuse and the Yakuza/Like A Dragon series, now that Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii is out.
This has been an exciting week in Sacred Symbols World. We're riding high off of our two hour interview with ex-Sony executive Shuhei Yoshida, and we're eager to reminisce and reflect on it. (You can watch or listen for yourself on Sacred Symbols+.) But as far as news is concerned? Well, this week is a little slower than most, which is why we packed extra listener inquiries into the show, and still covered what was there: Fresh rumors of a Tony Hawk 3+4 Remastered Collection, leaker updates concerning Square Enix's remakes of Final Fantasy IX and Final Fantasy Tactics, clarity on HBO's seasonal plans with The Last of Us, the potential emergence of a major Rainbow Six Siege update, and much more. As usual, we then round things out with listener inquiries on a variety of subjects. What are our thoughts about the recent layoffs on the Marvel Rivals team? Does SEGA and Ryu Ga Gotoku run the risk of overexposing the Yakuza/Like A Dragon franchise? Why are many creators so eager to politically and socially alienate their audiences? Is Colin on the verge of converting to Islam? Please keep in mind that our timestamps are approximate, and will often be slightly off due to dynamic ad placement.

Mahalo to Sega for the Review Copy! Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth successfully builds on 'Yakuza: Like A Dragon', evolving into a sequel that is both extensive and emotionally rich. While it keeps some of the series' quirks and doesn't fully embrace a customizable RPG format, the narrative and adventures it presents are deeply engaging, humorous, and heartfelt. I just wish there was some Hawaiian representation incorporated in the marketing and promotion of the game instead of influencers and celebrities that couldn't care less about our home. Alright, we have a new Yakuza protagonist this time, surely he will not go through the extreme hardships that Kiryu did right? Hold on let me just take a big bite of this cereal...
We jump back into Kiryu's newest adventure with the Yakuza, Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name. Kiryu is back as Joryu to tell the story of what happens between Yakuza Like A Dragon and Like A Dragon Infinite Wealth. Is this short tale one worth checking out?
I finished Like A Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name on Game Pass and I really enjoyed the bite-sized nature of it compared to the mainline games. It also acted as a good entryway into the brawler side of the Yakuza/Like A Dragon series. I also played a little bit of Persona 5 Tactica on Game Pass, and I'm not sure it will get me to really appreciate that style of game the way Strikers let me appreciate Musou games. Embracer Group will be laying off many employees and closing down projects after Saudi Arabia backed out of a deal. The Game Awards nominees have been announced, and obviously some people believe their favorite game was snubbed. Then we talk to Rob about The Game Awards.

A Video Game Time Capsule: The Complete History of Video Games, presented by MRIXRT @reallycool
2019-2020: A period of rapid evolution and unexpected challenges. In 2019, with Google's ambitious launch of Stadia and the next-gen console announcements from Sony and Microsoft, the gaming landscape seemed primed for monumental shifts. Yet, the loot box controversy continued to cast a shadow, prompting legal scrutiny worldwide. Ray tracing, Auto Battlers, and the ever-growing dominance of mobile gaming painted a picture of a vibrant, evolving industry. But it was also a time of change on the personnel front: the retirement of giants like Reggie Fils-Aime and Kaz Hirai marked the end of an era, while Bungie's tumultuous split from Activision underscored the complex dynamics between developers and publishers. Transitioning to 2020, the gaming world, like the rest of the planet, grappled with the challenges of a global pandemic. Yet, in adversity, the industry found growth, with streamers and gaming platforms seeing unprecedented engagement. Noteworthy events like Microsoft's acquisition of ZeniMax and the expanding cloud gaming frontier signaled that the industry was far from static, even in the face of global challenges. Reflecting on these years, one can't help but ponder: In a rapidly transforming world, both within and outside gaming, what lies on the horizon for this dynamic industry?Featured Games:Shenmue 3, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, The Outer Worlds, Apex Legends, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Hades, Among Us, Doom Eternal, & Yakuza: Like A Dragon. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★ (00:00) - Episode 14 (00:06) - 2019 (20:58) - 2020 Thanks to our monthly supporters FS Tabreez Siddique Mynx Mopman43 Ritsu William Kage Studio Devil Dallay_g Razu John H The Golden Bolt MykonosFan ErbBetaPatched Vornak Killer Space Serra Mr. Lindsay Autocharth History With Kayleigh Benjamin Steele Nick Makris minimme
A quarter of a century ago, we got some real stealthy classics – some of which have already been covered on this very podcast. Today we're looking at the game from that year that introduced many to the fact that video games can also be a lot like movies. We're going back to 1998 to take a look at the third game in one of the genre's most beloved (and maligned) series. We're talking Metal Gear Solid. On this episode of Stealth Boom Boom, we talk about how director / producer / writer Hideo Kojima, who wanted to make films from a young age, broke into the games industry. We also discuss some of the very explosive, '90s ways this game was marketed. We chat about pre-launch press coverage too, which includes some Resident Evil and Lego mentions, a research trip to see a SWAT team, and some chat on the influence of Yoji Shinkawa. In our review, you'll hear some chat on the excellent Soliton Radar (and why it needs to be excellent, because the game has a fixed camera), fading footprints in the snow, chaff grenades, hiding in cardboard boxes, disappearing enemies, F.R.E.E. (full reactive eyes entertainment), Benny Hill, floopy-doop weapons, mostly great boss fights, Psycho Mantis reading your mind, that opening hour, how anti-war this war game is, Meryl's codec number on the back of case, the briefing tapes, the Yakuza / Like A Dragon games, some of the most verbose and melodramatic people ever, "press the select button," and the alert noise. After all that, the lads take you through what some of the critics were saying about the game around the time it came out, and then they give their final verdicts on whether Metal Gear Solid is a Pass, a Play, or an Espionage Explosion. For those that would like to play along at home, we'll be reviewing Outlast on the next episode of Stealth Boom Boom.IMPORTANT LINKS TO THINGS
