What happens when you blend education with joy and curiosity? Dean Shareski, a seasoned educator and our special guest, paints a vivid picture of the transformative power of play-based learning. Despite not having a familial legacy in teaching, Dean discovered his calling amongst the laughter and boundless energy of primary grade classrooms. Listen as he shares his journey and insights into why nurturing a playful mindset is crucial for fostering a stress-free and engaging learning environment, arguing against the early push towards career-focused education.Imagine a classroom where passion ignites learning and every student feels a sense of belonging. This episode uncovers how educators can infuse their personal interests into teaching to build a close-knit community. We discuss the freedom teachers often overlook and how small rituals, like a class tea time, can create a supportive atmosphere. Recognizing that students bring complex needs to school, we echo the sentiment that “you can't have Bloom's stuff until you take care of the Maslow's stuff,” advocating for a nurturing foundation before diving into academics. Finally, we explore the evolving landscape of AI in education, drawing lessons from the early days of social media integration. Dean shares his experiences with AI tools in the classroom, emphasizing the importance of thoughtful implementation and the collaborative potential these tools offer. The Canadian Ed Leadership Show's mission to spotlight educational innovations and share inspirational stories takes center stage as we reflect on the power of podcasts to drive positive change. Join us for a conversation filled with gratitude, inspiration, and commitment to advancing education in meaningful ways.

Leader to Leader with Special Guest Dean Shareski
Dean Shareski, an Educational Consultant for Advanced Learning Partnerships, joined Al Kingsley on NetSupport Radio to discuss everything from an overview of education in Canada, the state of remote learning, the overall challenge of new teachers and leadership, along with some thoughts on the efforts around student well-being and workplace wellness.Questions included:Can you give me an overview of school governance in Canada? Can you also explain how it differs from the U.S. and perhaps the U.K?How do you think we are doing from a leadership perspective in the schools following the pandemic?Have you seen shifts in school administration and how governing bodies interact with schools? What are those challenges (new teachers and leadership face with respect to well-being and workplace wellness) and do you think they differ in our respective countries? What excites you most about some new trends we are seeing in schools?I am particularly interested in relevance in education and getting students onto career pathways where they can, rather quickly, have a trade or a career path that can earn a decent wage. What are your feelings about this? Are we doing enough? Can we have joy in schools? How about on social media? With so many difficulties, it seems beyond impossible sometimes to find joy but it can be done. Today, Dean Shareski, the author of Embracing a Culture of Joy brings his perspective to the challenges of modern living and learning. While his message has been around for a while, it is perhaps even more important today. In today's show we'll discuss: How Dean brings joy and humor to Zoom meetings (and podcasts) including some cool hardware and software The ambient irritability that seems to be prevalent today Why we still need joy How small kindnesses can make a big difference and some examples in schools Keeping perspective as we face problems How we can embrace multiple emotions at once Having concern for the world's problems and still finding joy in your day The importance of reflection How Vicki gets information from her students at the end of the school year to become a better teacher Some interesting laughs along the way! Welcome to episode 160 of the EdTech Situation Room from January 1, 2020, where technology news meets educational analysis. This week Jason Neiffer (@techsavvyteach) and Wesley Fryer (@wfryer) kicked off the first show of the new year by discussing Audrey Waters' (@audreywatters) marathon post "The 100 Worst Ed-Tech Debacles of the Decade," and Dean Shareski's (@shareski) post "I Don’t Think I’m an EdTech Guy Anymore." On the security front, recent Amazon Ring "hack incidents" revealed to be caused by reuse of compromised passwords and a good article from USAToday highlighting the dangerous cleverness of bank account phishers were highlighted. The fruits of the latest "Public Domain Day," the use of the machine learning powered (and creepy) website ThisPersonDoesNotExist.com to create profile photos for fake right wing Facebook profiles attempting to manipulate U.S. voters, and an educational technology startup capitalizing on the invasive surveillance potential of the iPhone for college students skipping classes (SpotterEDU) were also discussed. On the topic of "weird drone stuff" which points the importance of coding and computational thinking for students in schools today, articles about ongoing sightings of mysterious drone formations in eastern Colorado / western Nebraska, and a bizarre drone jamming incident by rural Chinese farmers attempting to foil an organized crime effort to spread swine fever / a pathogen via drone aircraft were also highlighted. Our show was live streamed and archived simultaneously on YouTube Live as well as our Facebook Live page via StreamYard.com. Please follow us on Twitter @edtechSR for updates, and join us LIVE on Wednesday nights if you can at 10 pm Eastern / 9 pm Central / 8 pm Mountain / 7 pm Pacific or 3 am UTC. Drew Perkins talks with Dean Shareski about the lack of substance in some education related social media postings, the importance of being able to discuss difficult ideas, and teacherly authority vs. self-directed learning.
It began with this tweet: I hear some suggest everyone should learn to code. Ok. But should everyone learn basic woodworking? electrical work? cooking? plumbing? automotive? Those are all good things but is time part of the issue? How do all these good things get taught? Just thinking out loud.— Dean Shareski (@shareski) September 10, 2018 When I say “thinking out loud” that’s not some kind of coy add-on, I truly am curious and enjoy hearing a broad range of perspectives. Gary Stager offered to take a deeper dive into this statement and so myself, Gary and Shana White took a stab at it. Gary referenced this slide as he shared: … Read the rest

This keynote looks at the new obligation of sharing for educators. With stories from the a variety of sources, the fact that we now have the ability to teach and share beyond our classrooms is moving from “nice to do” to “necessary to do”. See if you agree.
