Enquanto em Baku, no Azerbaijão, é esperado um acordo mundial para fazer face às alterações climáticas, desde 2013 que a cidade de Guimarães, no norte de Portugal, “deitou mãos à obra” para oferecer um território mais sustentável à população. Pela terceira vez, Guimarães candidatou-se a Capital Verde Europeia 2026. O resultado será conhecido na próxima quarta-feira, 27 de Novembro, em Valência. Francisco Carvalho, coordenador Geral e de Inovação do Laboratório da Paisagem, representante do Município de Guimarães na COP29,  sublinha que a transformação do município é “replicável a nível europeu ou mundial”, e mostra como interligando “pessoas, ciência, governança, academia, sector público e o sector privado” se consegue um território mais sustentável.Guimarães decidiu, em 2013, que queria ter um território mais sustentável para as pessoas e, portanto, nesse desígnio foi montada a estrutura para criar esse território. Foi feito um diagnóstico ao território, criou-se uma estrutura de missão e algumas estruturas de apoio para ajudar a trabalhar dois pontos muito importantes: as pessoas - criar conhecimento ao nível da acção climática, a nível do ambiente, dos mais novos aos mais velhos e a investigação aplicada ao território - recolha de dados para monitorizar e trabalhar nesse futuro.Ao longo destes anos, fomos recolhendo dados, trabalhando as pessoas, acumulando este poder para trabalhar a acção climática e demonstrando que esta acção local pode ter um grande impacto a nível global. Guimarães está a conseguir demonstrar que é um exemplo replicável a nível europeu ou mundial, do que se pode construir com as pessoas e a ciência, criando um ecossistema de governança que une a academia, o sector público, o sector privado neste conjunto. Um ecossistema de governança a trabalhar com o propósito de sermos uma cidade climaticamente neutra em 2030 e “uma cidade de um planeta”, em 2050.Questionado sobre a aceitação destas políticas ambientais e climáticas por parte dos munícipes, Francisco Carvalho refere a paixão dos vimaranenses pelo seu território.As pessoas de Guimarães são muito apaixonadas pelo território. Uma paixão que cresceu desde que Guimarães [Centro Histórico de Guimarães e Zona de Couros] foi considerada Património Mundial da UNESCO, depois Capital Europeia da Cultura (2012) e a seguir Cidade Europeia do Desporto (2013). Isso criou este sentimento de pertença nas pessoas e, portanto, esta paixão pela cidade. Dizer também que esta acção climática tem um efeito directo no bem-estar, na vida e na saúde das pessoas. A criação de espaços verdes proporciona zonas que são mais seguras, climaticamente mais preparadas, por exemplo, para fenómenos de calor.Existem algumas decisões que tocam na parte económica das pessoas, por exemplo, na gestão dos resíduos. Actualmente, quem contribui para a recolha dos resíduos, tem uma redução de 50% na taxa. Portanto, toca economicamente na vida das pessoas, aumenta a justiça climática e cria um território onde as pessoas podem viver com mais saúde e com melhor bem-estar. Depois de ter sido Capital Europeia da Cultura e Cidade Europeia do Desporto, Guimarães quer ser Capital Verde Europeia. É a terceira vez que concorre ao ao título. O resultado será conhecido na próxima quarta-feira, 27 de Novembro, em Valência.
