What does it truly mean to emerge as a middle leader? In this episode of Aspire to Lead, Gavin Grift, author of Emerge: Overcoming Common Challenges Associated with Middle Leadership, joins us to reimagine leadership in today's educational landscape. We explore the profound concept that "Clarity Precedes Competence," reframing hardships as stepping stones to growth, and the role self-awareness plays in transformative leadership. Gavin unpacks how busyness has become the modern-day "I'm fine" and reveals how leaders can reclaim their time for what truly matters. Dive into Gavin's fascinating Leadership Archetypes—the Pleaser, Ostrich, Imposter, Dynamo, and the Judge & Juror—and learn practical ways to recognize and grow beyond these tendencies. Whether you're navigating the complexities of middle leadership or looking to refine your approach, this episode delivers a fresh perspective and powerful strategies to help you emerge stronger and more focused than ever. Don't miss this engaging conversation with one of education's most inspiring voices! About Gavin Grift: Gavin Grift's career in education began in 1992 as a primary school teacher, where he spent 15 years fostering student agency and empowering students to take ownership of their learning. This pivotal role marked Gavin's transition from classroom teaching to educational leadership, focusing on systemic improvements in teaching and learning. In 2007, Gavin co-authored Assessing the Whole Child with Jane Satchwell, emphasizing student-led portfolios and conferences to empower students in their assessment processes. The book's success sparked invitations to present their work nationally, leading to partnerships with Hawker Brownlow Education to expand their reach. Around this time, Gavin's interest in cognitive development deepened after attending a Cognitive Coaching seminar with Thinking Collaborative. This experience shaped his approach to education and leadership, ultimately prompting him to transition into full-time consultancy, working with schools to strengthen teaching practices. Gavin's career reached new heights as he became Executive Director of a professional development venture created by Hawker Brownlow Education and Solution Tree. Under the mentorship of Richard and Rebecca DuFour, Gavin helped schools across Australia implement Professional Learning Communities, fostering collaboration and transforming teaching practices. Show Title: Authentic Parent Partnerships with Ari Gerzon-Kessler Power Quote: Description:Imagine that we have some time scheduled to meet together. What would you want to talk about? And how would I know what you wanted to talk about? You would either have had to tell me, or I would have had to ask. And if neither of those things happened before the meeting, we might both be a bit disappointed after the meeting. Now think about the classic parent-teacher conference:· Do all families want to know the same thing?· How do teachers know what families want to know?· If we get it right, what are the implication?· If we get it wrong, what are the implications? We talk about presence a lot on this show, and today, we are focusing our presence on families. Guest Bio:Ari Gerzon-Kessler is author of On The Same Team: Bringing Educators & Underrepresented Families Together, which won the Independent Publishers Book Awards 2024 IPPY Gold Medal for outstanding education book. He is a speaker, trainer, and coach working with schools and districts committed to forging stronger school-family partnerships. Ari also leads the Family Partnerships department for the Boulder Valley School District (CO). Ari has been an educator since 2000, having served as a principal and bilingual teacher. His leadership efforts to strengthen partnerships with underrepresented families and dismantle unjust practices was featured in Education Week in 2015. Ari regularly presents at national and international conferences on Families and Educators Together (FET) teams and other innovative family partnership best practices. He received his bachelor's in African American Studies from Wesleyan University and a master's in instruction and curriculum from the University of Colorado. Warmup questions:· We always like to start with a celebration. What are you celebrating today?· Is there a story that will help listeners understand why you are doing what you do? Questions/Topics/Prompts Big picture paradigm shift of what family partnerships actually meanSystems requirements for making the shift (FET)“The” first step an AP can make in this direction - could be internal or external, but I like for people to have one or two things they can take away from the episode and apply immediately. Closing questions:· What part of your own leadership are you still trying to get better at?· If listeners could take just one thing away from today's podcast, what would it be?· Before we go, is there anything else that you'd like to share with our listeners?· Where can people learn more about you and your work… Close· Leadership is a journey and thank you for choosing to walk some of this magical path with me.· You can find links to all sorts of stuff in the show notes, including my website https://www.frederickbuskey.com/· I love hearing from you so consider email me at frederick@frederickbuskey.com or connecting with me on LinkedIn.· My new book, A School Leader's Guide to Reclaiming Purpose, is now available on Amazon. Hello everyone! Welcome to Teach Me, Teacher. This episode is a version of one of my favorite keynotes I do. It's my favorite because it's filled with real world stories about my life and the teachers that saved me growing up. Now, I don't mean "saved" in the religious sense. I mean "saved" as in BEING THE DIFFERENCE. What did that look like to me? What did it sound like as I navigated growing up around drugs and violence? All of that and more in this talk. Hello everyone! Being in the teacher podcast space for over 8 years has shown me a lot about the state of education and how it has changed. Mainly, professional development is dying. If you missed part 1 of this talk, find it here. Conferences are filled with sessions that appeal to ideology instead of quality pedagogy. District PD's are all about how to log in to the latest tool and assign work to kids. Books are expensive and not worth reading when state laws restrict what resources teachers can use. So, what's the deal? Why is teaching PD in such a state of despair? To think and talk through this (and maybe have some hope at the end of the tunnel), I brought on Pam Ochoa, my co-host on the Craft & Draft podcast. Pam is an Abydos Learning International Diamond level trainer and has trained teachers in the teaching of writing and reading for 26 years. She provides professional development for those who want to become more student centered in their instructional approach. She was an Instructional Coach where she worked with Jacob Chastain and collaborated on the Craft and Draft Notebook system. Hello everyone! The reading wars carry on, believe it or not. In nearly every corner of the internet—even outside of education—people are concerned about literacy in America. The Counter Narrative: Changing the Way We Talk (and think) About Education
My staff have started to read "Finding Your Blindspots" by Hedreich Nichols and we are diving deep into this practical text as we engage in reflective dialogue around our own biases. This series will aim to capture my own perspectives as we navigate the eight principles outlined in this Solution Tree best-seller. These first two chapters focused on examining your own biases and confronting the inevitable shame and guilt felt during this process. Hedreich suggests using a tool such as the Harvard Implicit Bias Assessment and sitting with the results regardless of how surprising they may be. The second chapter focuses on confronting that guilt and shame without allowing it to drive you into a safe space or become confrontational - both practices that prevent the roots of the bias from being addressed. Be sure to tune in again on September 29th for a recap of the next two chapters. In the meantime, be sure to pick your own copy so that you can follow along this journey of self-discovery. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thecounternarrative/support
