Is distance learning just a pandemic-era stopgap, or does it have lasting potential in education?Virtual learning skeptics often assume that online education was a temporary fix—an emergency response rather than a viable long-term model. Many educators and policymakers still equate today's online learning with the chaotic transition of 2020, failing to recognize how far the field has come.In this episode, John Watson, founder and CEO of DLAC and the Digital Learning Annual Conference, joins us to challenge these misconceptions. As one of the leading voices in digital education, John has spent decades tracking the evolution of online learning, from early adoption to the cutting-edge innovations shaping its future.Key Insights & Takeaways:✅ Distance Learning Is Not a Pandemic Experiment—It's a Proven Model. • Many assume that online learning started with COVID, but John explains how digital education has been a long-standing movement with a robust foundation before the pandemic. • The abrupt shift in 2020 was emergency remote learning, not the structured, effective virtual programs that have been evolving for decades.✅ The Reality: Virtual Learning Expands, Not Replaces, Student Options. • Online courses are often the only way students can access AP classes, dual enrollment, or specialized subjects. • Hybrid and online programs are built on choice, allowing students to personalize their learning while maintaining flexibility.✅ The Future of Education Is Hybrid, Not Either-Or. • The next wave of education isn't about choosing between online and in-person—it's about blending the best of both. • DLAC attendees are shaping innovative hybrid models, where online learning enhances, rather than replaces, traditional schools.✅ Sustainability and Lifelong Learning Matter More Than Ever. • AI, virtual reality, and digital tools are reshaping education, but sustainable models require schools to focus on personalization and long-term adaptability. • John shares a powerful story of a student who went from nearly dropping out to excelling in a hybrid learning model, proving that online education creates futures, not just classrooms.Actionable Takeaway:Educators and policymakers must shift their focus from debating if distance learning has a future to optimizing its role in expanding educational access and personalization. The key isn't replacing in-person learning but designing flexible, high-quality options that meet students' diverse needs.

Well, that's one way, isn't it, to deal with your problematic pupil attendance record – do away with attendance requirements altogether.   Hagley College in Christchurch will allow some of its students to work from home two days a week, in a trial to believed to be a New Zealand first. The college is offering 20 NCEA Level 2 students the chance to do hybrid learning. There'll be 16 hours of math, science, and English, and they will be required to be at school three days a week for in person learning and two days will be online via scheduled video calls. Hagley representative Nathan Walsh said the school had tried to get students to attend the traditional five-day face to face education model, otherwise known as school, but they'd really struggled, especially when it came to getting kids back into the classroom who'd experienced mental or physical health issues, or children who had extracurricular activities they prioritised. Gaming, you know, that's an all-night thing —you're knackered by the time the morning rolls around— all sorts of other extracurricular activities that are best done in twilight or by dark of night.   So the prospective hybrid learners would need to prove their ability to work independently when out of school, and caregivers had to be clear on their responsibility to support ongoing learning. It's a trial for now, but if it's successful, if students achieve well, and if they attend their classes, hybrid learning will be offered to pupils for NCEA levels 2 and 3 in 2026, at Hagley College.   Now the old school amongst us may think this is a load of lefty tosh. But have a look at all the adults who claim to be just as productive working from home as they are in the office. There are so many people who have incorporated working from home as their working model. Students, especially the older students, see their parents working from home and think why not? Especially if they are part of that cohort who was told to stay home, who were kept out of classrooms for two years. If we have been told that you can learn just as well outside of the classroom, why wouldn't you give hybrid learning a go?   And then there are the young people who have really struggled to get back into the rhythm of going to school. I remember a youngish mum ringing in, and she had a great big giant of a 16-year-old son who would not go to school some days. He said I can do it in three hours, I can do what I need to learn in three hours. It's all a crock, most of it is just time wasting. I can get it done and still do my own thing. And he was too big for her to drag to school. He was too old for her to bribe, and she was at her wits end. Good family, an expectation that school was part of a young person's life, but she said he was right, he could do the learning in three hours and then do his own thing.   So surely any learning is better than none if young people will not go to school. We've seen many who don't want to go, can't go, are too anxious to go, surely getting some learning into them is better than them dropping out altogether?   My initial response was oh for God's sake, for the love of all that is Holy, there aren't many expectations on young people but going to school is one of them. But then you think about it and you know, going to work used to be an expectation. Not now. People will work from home, and if their employer's reluctant for them to do so, they'll find another employer. You're a kid, you see Mum and Dad working from home, then you're going to want to do the same thing if it suits you better.   And if you are one of those parents who has struggled to get their young person back into the classroom, would you welcome the opportunity for hybrid learning? We've heard from parents who have said, look, I negotiate with my child and say three days out of the week you've got to go, two days you can stay home. For some parents, I imagine this would be a blessing.   See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

A Christchurch school hopes to address falling attendance rates by allowing some students to work from home two days a week.  The trial will be run by Hagley College, who will be offering 20 students the opportunity to do “hybrid learning”.  Students will attend 16 hours of the core subjects —maths, science, and English— a week, with three days of in-person learning, and two days of online learning.  Tim O'Connor, Headmaster at Auckland Grammar, told Kerre Woodham that Hagley is entitled to make whatever decisions they see fit for their school community, but from his point of view, they need students attending school on a daily basis.  He said there's much to be learned from being in a physical classroom, such as socialisation skills, routines and scheduling, and the Socratic style of learning that occurs within a classroom environment.    LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this week's podcast, Dr. Melik Khoury, President of Unity Environmental University, shares the transformative journey of Unity from 500 to over 7,500 students and a budget increase from $14 million to $58 million.    Podcast Highlights   Our Inherited Academic Business Model is Cracking Under Pressure   Regulatory systems no longer hold up to the changes in higher education funding models post-evolution to loan-based funding. 75 percent of the universities and colleges that have closed or merged over the last five years were not under regulatory watch and/or warning or probation because our measuring stick does not meet the realities of the 21st-century institution. Academia is excellent at identifying and deconstructing the problem yet stymied by the challenge of adapting to change in processes and governance to meet market demand, even at the risk of its survival.    High Achievement Growth in Institutional Performance Unity went from 540 students to over 7,500, and expecting 10,000 within the next 2 years. Graduation rates are impressively high, alternative loans are less than 3%, and placement rates are over 80%. Dr. Khoury's mindset for achieving those big successes are: 1. Never be the smartest person in the room. 2. Be willing to (metaphorically) take a punch in the face and not fall down. 3. Figure out what you're really trying to do.   Building a Sustainable and Agile Enterprise Model Building an Enterprise Model requires thinking outside the one-size-fits-all model to create a new program and model that: o    delivers what potential students want. o   delivers it in an adaptable model that lets students shift when they want or need. o   does not compromise on the pedagogy or the experience based on the student type. Creating Distinct Independent Sustainable Education Business Units (SEBUs) Sustainable Education Business Units (SEBUs): structuring the model into independent delivery mechanisms that utilize centralized shared services. Unity currently has three academic SEBUs and one business ventures SEBU:   o   Distance Education – online learning o   Hybrid Learning – in-person and online learning o   Sustainable Ventures – revenue-generating businesses that provide a real-world manifestation of our curriculum o   Technical Institute for Environmental Professions – in-person and online learning offering associate degrees and certificates They segment verticals and treat them as subsidiaries with their own faculty, staff, and P&L.   When learning designers, faculty, and staff focus on the adult place-bound student, they don't have to compromise for the faculty, learning designer, or staff working on the community college commuter program, the residential program, and the like.  It allows the creation of programs, calendars, tuitions, and service types without the one-size-fits-all confines and compromises.   The Enterprise Model Non-traditional Org Structure   Unity's organizational structure emphasizes a balance between centralized decision-making for the enterprise and decentralized decision-making for subsidiaries.  The enterprise ensures compliance, assessment, and policy enforcement, while subsidiaries have authority over their own affairs within established guidelines.  Roles are differentiated based on the level of responsibility within the enterprise or subsidiary.   Efficient Curriculum Development: Streamlining Processes and Reducing Delays        Unity emphasizes collaboration between departments to avoid duplication and ensure unique offerings in their curriculum, aiming to streamline processes and reduce delays. Instead of creating duplicate courses, departments "buy" courses from each other. For example, if one department wants an online course, they purchase it from another department specializing in online education. The approach ensures consistency in curriculum across different departments, making it easier for students to transfer credits. They have redefined traditional faculty roles, allowing curriculum design and pedagogy experts to collaborate with subject matter experts to create tailored courses.     Join Us Next Week for Part Two of This Podcast with Dr. Melik Khoury   Read the transcript on our website →     About Our Podcast Guest   Dr. Melik Peter Khoury is the 11th President and CEO of Unity Environmental University headquartered in New Gloucester, Maine. In response to the COVID pandemic, remote working became the norm for organisations to continue operating. As restrictions eased and employees both proved that remote working was viable and preferable, Hybrid Working emerged as a term to describe the mainstream adoption of this flexible approach to working from home and commuting, when required. However, in line with a new way of working emerged a new approach to learning. Or did it?  In this episode, David, and Nigel Paine, who has 25 years of L&D experience and teaches on a doctoral programme at an Ivy League University, discuss this.   KEY TAKEAWAYS Hybrid learning is a bit of a cliché, which is great for marketing, but is not for customers. We need to ask if remote/hybrid learning is the optimum solution for all hybrid workers, rather than assume that is the case. The L&D industry is prone to following fads and to re-badging old products. Doing fieldwork is essential if you want to understand what will work and avoid being tempted to follow a fad that does not do the job. When gathering data, ask lots of why questions to gain a deeper understanding of the issues. Don't be afraid to discuss things that don't necessarily fall under the learning remit as a way of improving your understanding. Few of the influential L&D software vendors have worked in the industry, so their tools and services often miss the mark.  See yourself as a practitioner, bring your experience to bear and act together with your stakeholders to solve their problems.   BEST MOMENTS 'I see so many terms that just come and go …. and hybrid learning is one of those' 'The last thing I would ever do to anyone in an organisation is to tell them what they need. I would help them to work that out for themselves.' 'Go in there with a partnership approach and ask the right questions.  'I would like to see more L&D people who are in control of their practice…not just working out what software to use.
