The biggest risk with using AI in your team is not the technology, but how you use it. Deloitte discovered recently how badly things can spiral out of control when they use AI-generated content without doing even basic checks. This should be a lesson for all leaders: Embracing AI is important, but you also need the right education, oversight, and mindset to avoid getting it wrong.https://swiy.co/go-the-deloitte-ai-scandalYou might have seen the recent story about Deloitte caught cheating in a half-a-millon-dollar consulting report it created for an Australian government department.Deloitte's consultants used AI to research and generate some of the report. Nothing wrong with that. But then it didn't do even the most basic fact-checking about the AI-generated content, and released the report riddled with errors. Specifically, some of the references cited in the report simply didn't exist, and others did exist but didn't say what Deloitte claimed they said. When they were caught out, Deloitte claimed these AI “hallucinations” didn't change the report's recommendations. But that's no excuse! The fact that some of the references didn't even exist shows Deloitte didn't even bother reading those references. They weren't using AI as a research tool. It's hard not conclude they they were just using this AI-generated content to bulk up the report and make it look more authoritative.Deloitte has apologised, and apparently they are returning some undisclosed portion of their fee. We don't know how much, even though as taxpayers, we should be told. But the government is refusing to say. This is not just a Deloitte problem. It's a major problem for many leaders and organisations trying to use AI now.You absolutely SHOULD be using AI as a research assistant. I do that all the time, and it saves me hours of Google searches and other research. But it's only a starting point. It's an assistant. You then need to apply your own human expertise to the artificial intelligence. That might sound obvious, and yet many people in many workplaces don't get it.And it's not their fault. Many organisations and leaders are giving their people access to AI without anywhere near enough education and professional development. Sometimes there's none at all!I'm stunned at how few organisations are providing the appropriate level of education for one of the most powerful tools available in workplaces now! AI is not just the future – it's with us right now! So, that education is crucial. If you'd like to know more about this, join my free public online presentation next week about AI for leaders – for 2026 and beyond. In Episode 335, Kestrel welcomes Lisa Kibutu, the founder of Regenerative Fashion Collaborative Exchange (REFACE) and Regenerative Textile Development Institute (RTDI), to the show. A tech-led social enterprise, REFACE was created to holistically address the negative impact of the global fashion industry on climate change, biodiversity, and the environment in Africa. With RTDI, she is building a pioneering research and development institution that leverages blockchain technology, zero waste operations, and regenerative agriculture to transform agricultural waste from Indigenous grain crops into high-quality textile yarn. “You're standing in this space, the gap between what society is expecting of you and what your soul insists on you to become. And it influences all my work and my obligation to the sacrifice of our ancestors, the sacrifice that they made to the colonizers, which is why we are where we are today. I sit on ancestral intelligence, which is the blueprint and the foundation of everything that I do. A little bit more than a blueprint to me – I am actually just going to claim my inheritance from the ancestors. And that claiming of the inheritance has become my purpose.” -Lisa THEME —WHEN *REGENERATIVE* MEANS SO MUCH MORE THAN JUST A BUZZWORD The following is a very important statistic that is rarely centered in the so-called sustainability and fashion conversation — as reported by the UNEP, Africa contributes less than 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions. At the same time, the continent has been disproportionately impacted by the changing climate. With this in mind, in conjunction with her knowledge in fashion, design, anthropology and regenerative agriculture – Lisa founded a powerful two-prong approach to not only address the negative impact of the global fashion industry on climate change, biodiversity, and the environment in Africa, but also – to strategically research and develop innovative textiles made from the waste of Indigenous crops, and to maintain ownership of these technologies within the continent. Africa has a unique potential at this point in our history – especially when it comes to regenerative agriculture, with 80% of all the food production in Africa being run by smallholder farmers. The opportunities across Africa are expansive. And as Lisa reminds us, it's not about empowerment. It's about following the blueprint from AI – that is ancestral intelligence – and focusing on enriching communities across the continent. “You're right. Fashion is cultural. Cause you've moved from the basic need of covering according to weather patterns, and then you advance to the space where – you need to appeal to aesthetics. That's the next level. But aesthetics are particular to what you find in your environment and then it becomes artistic expression, personal expression of yourself. And I think those are the pieces now, when we talk about fast fashion – those are the pieces that are missing.” -Lisa RTDI Website Follow REFACE on Instagram
What if the camera on an officer's chest could listen, watch, and turn a call or scene scene into a clean first draft of the report before anyone sits down at a keyboard? We dig into the real-world ways AI is changing police work in Cape Coral—speeding up documentation, meeting urgent NCIC deadlines for missing kids, and giving officers more time where it matters most: with people. We walk through how body-worn cameras now pair with AI to identify call types, pull key details from audio and video, and create structured reports that officers review and approve. That shift doesn't replace human judgment—it protects it, freeing officers from retyping interviews and letting them stay in the field longer. We also unpack a powerful translation feature that detects language on the fly and delivers near real-time two-way communication, cutting delays and misunderstandings when clarity is critical. We talk transparently about total how strategic tech investment can reduce the need for future positions without cutting current jobs, recapturing workload while guarding against burnout. The takeaway is simple: you won't be replaced by AI, but you could be outpaced by leaders who use it well. We're choosing to move forward—measuring results, keeping human skills at the core, and using the right tools to serve Cape Coral better every day.The Cape Coral Police Department is hiring. Open Forum: Pastor Amos led the Open Forum meeting by reflecting on the completion of the Bible Basics series and outlining the upcoming conclusion of the Revelation series by November, with December services likely focused on Christmas and New Year. He raised a critical question about CFE's identity—whether it is a church, ministry. Discussions with Derrick emphasized repositioning ministry school to focus more on deep biblical study than pastoral roles, while Pastor Amos highlighted the rising relevance of AI in ministry and encouraged participation in Sonja's AI community. Sonja shared details of her upcoming AI workshop for cancer support, and Pastor Amos commented on the recent Middle East peace agreement. The group also explored interpreting visions through Scripture, the relevance of Revelation, and the nature of prophetic imagery, with Pastor Amos emphasizing spiritual grounding and the practical message of Revelation. Additional discussions included dispensational theology, the influence of digital information on faith, and a call for unity and simplicity in spiritual guidance. The session closed with a focus on personal responsibility in witnessing, God-centered ministry, and continued engagement with Scripture as the foundation for spiritual growth. AI is a field full of misconceptions, with many afraid to use it – but expert Andrew Bartlett tells the AJP Podcast how it's being used to help learning and simulate patient interactions “There is still a lot of people who are scared of AI,” says Andrew Bartlett, academic at the University of Sydney's School of Pharmacy, and PhD candidate. “Students are afraid to use it. They think they'’re going to get caught cheating.” But “The way that university, particularly the University of Sydney works now, is that we have assessments to help learning and we have assessments of learning and AI is allowed in those assessments where it's helping learning. “I think there’s a misconception [that] whatever you put in is private and I don't think it is. And so I think there's some serious concerns that people need to take into consideration about what they put into AI.” Bartlett has been having his students help him develop AI agents – “it's a bit of a class project”. “I have a pharmacy management tutor and we use it in the class, so I'll give them a topic, say we're talking about the pharmacy employment landscape in different areas of Australia. “I might give each little table group a prompt and they put it into the agent and then collectively they've got to come up with a three minute presentation that they've got to teach back the class. “So they quite like doing that. It means that there's almost like an extra one of me accessible when they need it. “When it comes to exam preparation as well, it's got all my teaching resources in there, they can ask it questions, I can train it to behave a bit like I would in the way that it asks questions. “So I'm accessible 24 hours, but I still get to sleep.” Highlights include: 01:12 – Bartlett's background in pharmacy, and how he became interested in AI 02:18 – “I was seeing them use AI in classrooms and I was seeing that they were using it really badly.” 03:24 – AI misconceptions 04:37 – How students respond to the AI agents 06:48 – AI for patient counselling scenarios 08:50 – The key benefits of simulated patient interactions 09:39 – How to minimise mistakes 11:16 – “AI can be quite good at stepping someone through a reflective process.” 13:02 – Bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world pharmacy skills 14:29 – How could AI change a pharmacist's day-to-day role? 15:56 – “It's interesting looking at the biases that come through.” 19:24 – What skills do pharmacists need in an AI-driven future? 21:35 – Getting up to speed 22:36 – The next frontier 25:17 – Embracing AI in business You can access the full transcript of this podcast here. This week I've been in Asia and in this podcast I describe how Japan's economic history teaches us about AI transformation in our careers and our companies. I also describe my experience using Galileo on my 7 hour flight from Japan to Singapore. Takeaways Why has Japan's economy has stagnated since the mid-80s. The aging population poses significant workforce challenges. Cultural beliefs in lifelong employment hold us back Wages in Japan are tied to tenure rather than performance. Companies must encourage experimentation to leverage AI. The integration of AI is a continuous process, not a one-time event. Access to information is revolutionizing decision-making in business. Language barriers are diminishing with technology. Embracing AI is essential for future career success. The Building Better Developers with AI podcast continues its season of revisiting past episodes with fresh insights. In this discussion, Rob Broadhead and Michael Meloche revisit the classic topic of breaking through career plateaus and reframe it through the lens of developer career growth. The original episode shared practical strategies for accelerating progress. This version adds AI-driven perspectives, personal stories, and a reminder that developers must be intentional about growth in a rapidly evolving industry. Recognizing Developer Career Growth Roadblocks Career plateaus are rarely obvious. Instead, they surface gradually through symptoms like: Completing tasks on autopilot A lack of new responsibilities or ownership Months without learning a new tool, framework, or design pattern As Rob explains, being “comfortable” often means you're falling behind. In technology, a developer's career growth demands continuous movement forward. If you haven't challenged yourself in six months, your developer career growth may already be stuck. Why Developer Career Growth Plateaus Happen Rob frames the plateau as a “gamer problem”—your XP bar fills, but the level-up screen never appears. Routine work, a lack of internal visibility, or failure to market oneself can all hinder a developer's career growth. Michael emphasizes the importance of self-reflection. Sometimes the issue isn't a lack of opportunity, but a lack of initiative. Are you doing the bare minimum, or seeking challenges that stretch you? He shares how experimenting with signature tablets and webcams—well outside his role—kept him learning and growing. That curiosity didn't move him up in that company, but it paved the way to a higher-paying role elsewhere. Expanding Beyond Code for Developer Career Growth Not all growth is about coding more. Rob points out that developer career growth also comes from: Taking on design and architecture work Mentoring and teaching others Exploring leadership or project ownership Michael reinforces the power of teaching. Sharing knowledge sharpens communication skills, broadens perspective, and strengthens problem-solving abilities. Strategies to Accelerate Developer Career Growth The episode outlines clear steps for reigniting progress: Stretch Projects – Volunteer for cross-team or challenging work. Skill Stacking – Add complementary abilities like UX, DevOps, or CI/CD. Mentorship 2.0 – Learn from mentors, but also mentor others. Visibility Boosts – Blog, present at meetups, or contribute to open source. Side Hustles – Build projects outside work to push yourself into new learning. Side projects are “cheat codes” for developer career growth. Even small shifts—such as switching IDEs or adopting new tools—can help shake off stagnation and sharpen your adaptability. AI's Role in Developer Career Growth Michael warns against ignoring AI. Some developers resist learning it, believing their existing skills will always be in demand. History shows otherwise—just as COBOL programmers saw demand collapse after Y2K, today's developers risk irrelevance by avoiding new technologies. Embracing AI isn't optional anymore. It's the new baseline for sustaining developer career growth. Episode Challenge: Take Charge of Your Developer Career Growth Your challenge this week: Identify one area where your growth has stalled, and take one intentional step forward. Options include: Learning a new framework or tool Volunteering for a stretch assignment Mentoring a junior colleague Starting a side project outside your comfort zone Don't wait for others to create opportunities. Own your developer career growth starting today. Final Thoughts Breaking through plateaus isn't about endless reinvention—it's about steady, intentional growth. Rob and Michael agree: if your current environment doesn't provide chances to grow, then create them—or find a place that will. Developer career growth is not optional. In a fast-moving industry, standing still means falling behind. Stay Connected: Join the Developreneur Community We invite you to join our community and share your coding journey with us. Her unconventional educational journey began when her mother chose to homeschool her, recognizing that traditional schooling methods were not suited for her children. Despite not beginning to read until age 12, Claire's educational path flourished under the flexible and personalized approach of homeschooling. This allowed her natural talents and problem-solving abilities to develop unfettered by conventional educational constraints. Her rapid progress led her to college at just 15 years old. After graduating, Claire's entrepreneurial spirit drove her to become a founding partner and successfully manage a pioneering medical device company. The company's innovative product is currently in clinical trials for FDA approval. Drawing from her personal experiences, Claire is now a passionate advocate for educational reform. She believes in the power of individualized learning approaches that nurture creativity, critical thinking, and collaborative skills. Her mission is to raise awareness about the limitations of traditional schooling methods and promote alternative educational pathways that can unlock the full potential of each learner. As an educator and thought leader, Claire challenges the status quo in education, encouraging parents and policymakers to consider more flexible and adaptive learning environments. Her work focuses on demonstrating how unconventional educational approaches can lead to remarkable personal and professional success, preparing students for the challenges of the modern world.
