Under the Library - A Call of Cthulhu Actual-Play

On this Episode of Under the Library:   Cully questions the confused and unresponsive Richard to no avail. Rutherford notices that Richard has wet himself. He also has redness and broken capillaries in the corner of his left eye. Richard asks to go home because he's very tired.   As Rutherford and Cully examine Richard, Franny notices a man sitting on a bench about 200 feet down the street, staring at them while frantically scribbling. Rutherford approaches him and discovers that he's Willard Palmer, an artist. Rutherford purchases his sketchbook, including sketches of them examining Richard, as well as Richard being dropped after his abduction, and even a picture of the mysterious facility. After this encounter, the four head back to Richard's house.   At the facility, Bello, Boone, and Jo have arrived for Bello's meeting with Paula Bradford in food service. They argue about how to best provide a distraction for the others as they rescue Richard. Jo wants to set a small fire in an unused area of the complex, while Bello prefers to have a big chicken sale. Boone starts preparing to cook chicken as Bello heads into the complex.   Bello hears discussion about beef supply from inside an office and knocks to enter. He meets Stan, who hints for a bribe to help Bello out. Bello eventually sells Stan on an investment in greaseless chicken and they shake on a 30% deal. Bello then heads to the restroom.   At the same time, out in the chicken mobile, Boone sees smoke billowing from a part of the facility that's under construction. Remembering the previous conversation, he realizes that Jo must've set the fire. Jo returns and explains that she wanted a big distraction so that Cully would be safe. Boone returns to his chicken prep. A few minutes later, there's a knock at the door of the chicken mobile, and two stone faced military men banish Boone & Jo from the premises.    Blaring sirens warn everyone to leave the building. Bello waits for silence and then sneaks out to search Stan's office. He makes a call to Wagoneer Farms, Stan's current supplier, and says their contract is over (crushing a child's dreams of a new bike). He also explores the director's office and takes some ledgers and information about deliveries.   Back at Richard's house, Franny and Cully clean him up and change his clothes. Franny notices a needle mark on his arm. Rutherford realizes he's been under anesthesia. Franny examines his eye and realizes someone may have accessed his brain by entering between the nasal cavity and the eyeball.    Finally, at the facility, Jo feels guilt for the size and severity of the fire. She worries about Bello, realizing he should have come out of the burning facility by now.   ------------------------   Bloodstone is an original Call of Cthulhu sandbox, designed by Under the Library's Keeper, and features weekly actual play / live play / real play sessions. Under the Library - A Call of Cthulhu Actual-Play

On this Episode of Under the Library:   In Richard's house, Franny and Rutherford continue to plan for their entry into the science facility. Franny sketches rough copies of the blueprints, and Rutherford memorizes them. They realize the train runs in and out of the building in question, and they want to ask Boone if he saw any clues in his travels.   At the same time, Jo shares a tragic story from her past with Cully and explains why the journal is so important. She shares her story with Boone, who promises not to talk as an adult. Boone had heard of a bunch of murders in Abiquiu, and also knew of a hallucinogenic popular there.   Jo passes Boone the book, and he sees a vision that is probably the inside of Jo's house. He's overwhelmed by the feeling of death in that space and drops the book.    Together Cully, Boone, and Jo decide that Richard might know Hans (the book's former owner), and they should find him to better understand the journal. They decide to rejoin the search for Richard despite hard feelings towards Rutherford and Franny. They will not share Jo's story and instead will pretend that everything is fine.   They return to the house, meeting Bello along the way. He offers to help by distracting the staff during his meeting, and Jo agrees to help.   Franny and Rutherford ask Boone about his experience on the train. He shares some information with them, including an unusual level of security and some strange, unidentifiable sounds from the front of the train.   Finally, Franny, Rutherford, and Cully head out in Richard's car, while Jo and Boone accompany Bello in his "Bello La Barca". As the first car passes through town, Cully spots a disheveled Richard stumbling down the street. Cully speaks to him, and he is clearly not himself!    ------------------------   Bloodstone is an original Call of Cthulhu sandbox, designed by Under the Library's Keeper, and features weekly actual play / live play / real play sessions. Under the Library - A Call of Cthulhu Actual-Play

On this Episode of Under the Library:   After everyone else leaves the theater and heads to Richard's house, Jo returns home and opens her mysterious book. Cursive writing appears in front of her eyes; a male author describing a successful ritual. That night, Jo's dreams include disturbing visions from the journal. The next morning she stops by the theater, finds it abandoned, and heads to Richard's house.    In the meantime, Cully, Bello, and Franny have separate breeakfasts at Richard's while Rutherford prepares for their laboratory excursion. Then Franny unrolls the paintings that Boone left on the kitchen table, and she also discovers the 7 stories of blueprints. It seems to have a couple stories above ground and the rest below.   Joe finally arrives at the house and tells everyone about the journal. She shares it with the group, and realizes both Franny and Rutherford know the author, Hans Bekker. They examine it and, knowing Hans is a notorious joker, dismiss Jo's claims and insult her. She grabs the journal and runs out, followed by Cully and Bello. Franny and Rutherford remain inside, making plans to enter the facility.   ------------------------   Bloodstone is an original Call of Cthulhu sandbox, designed by Under the Library's Keeper, and features weekly actual play / live play / real play sessions. Under the Library - A Call of Cthulhu Actual-Play

On this Episode of Under the Library:   Bello still seems to be in pain and Boone wants to help. He peels off the upper half of the chicken costume and applies first aid to Bello's broken arm, leaving it in a sling.   After much discussion, the group decides to return to DIck's house to look for clues. Cully looks for aspirin for Bello in the medicine cabinet, and notices that Dick's heart meds are gone, as well as his favorite hair pomade. In addition, it looks like his bedroom has been searched.    Rutherford looks for Dick's research notes, but only finds a note on his desk saying that he's been called away on urgent business. Dick apologizes for his abrupt departure and offers his house for the party to use. Rutherford is sure this is Dick's handwriting, scrawled in haste. He finds a code within the letter that produces the single word "abducted."   Looking around the house, Boone notices three paintings with a familiar symbol which translates to "here is the place." At the same time, Rutherford finds Dick's Colt .38, and Franny confirms that there are no signs of forced entry.   The group deliberates on how best to find Dick, and Franny offers to explore the facility even though she would put herself in danger. Rutherford wants to join, posing as a visiting researcher with Cully as his assistant. Bello has a meeting at the facility the next day, and plans a chicken-related distraction.   The group decides to sleep at Dick's. although Bello parks his mobile chicken kitchen in the driveway and sleeps there. After everyone falls asleep, Boone examines the three marked paintings and finds blueprints of a 7 story building on the back. Under the Library - A Call of Cthulhu Actual-Play

On this Episode of Under the Library:   Having arrived at the theater, Dr. Gardener approaches her patient, Bello Poulet. It quickly becomes clear that she's reluctant to care for the seemingly insane chicken man, but eventually she relents. Franny offers to stay behind and assist the doctor as Levine orders everyone else out of the theater lobby. In the confusion, Jo slips back into the theater.   As the doctor prepares a syringe and hands it to Franny, Bello babbles at her, attempting to sell her on a chicken franchise. Dr. Gardener motions to Franny to administer the shot as she distracts Bello by applying a tongue depressor. Bello is blurry but conscious, experiencing visions of his father enacting violence on the chicken coop.   The doctor steps out to retrieve a large apparatus to draw Bello's blood. The apparatus is labeled "The Rumsford," and Franny draws a connection between the company and her great uncle Harold Rumsford. Impressed by Franny's lineage, Dr. Gardener invites her to talk more later.   Finished with Bello, the doctor begins to leave but is waylaid by Cully. He points out that she never actually treated Bello's broken arm. Dr. Gardener unconvincingly claims that she's merely retrieving supplies to tend to the arm later.    Rutherford and Boone approach Cully to discuss Dick and the suspected government abduction. Rutherford remembers that Dick designed his building to prevent escape, and wonders if Dick is being held in one of his own creations.   During the events in the lobby, Jo navigates the theater and slips backstage. She overhears Lana Peret and Caspar arguing - Lana is unhappy with the way she is treated and feels under appreciated. Jo continues around the house left side of the theater and finds a pipe that may feed the purple mist through the relief work. She sneaks back out of the theater, but stops on stage to steal a deck of cards as a souvenir.   ------------------------   Bloodstone is an original Call of Cthulhu sandbox, designed by Under the Library's Keeper, and features weekly actual play / live play / real play sessions. Under the Library - A Call of Cthulhu Actual-Play

On this Episode of Under the Library:   In the lobby of the theater, Jo is approached by a couple from Abeline, Texas. Betty Lou claims to be able to read minds and provides facts about both Jo and Cully, and Jimmy Dale seems to be a little slow. Betty Lou gives Jo a quarter from 1892 and leaves to get ice cream, saying that she will see Jo later.   Worried about Bello's health, Franny calls Dr. Eveline Gardener. She speaks to a receptionist who warns that the doctor is busy but will come as soon as possible. Dr. Gardener has a penchant for picking up stray dogs and keeps a kennel behind her clinic. She also volunteers as a grave digger to stay motivated.   Boone has cleaned up in the bathroom and joins Rutherford in looking for Dick. Since they can't find him, they instead head out to look for evidence of the wild dogs. As they wander around the theater, the sky lights up with a flash of fuchsia and green. This is probably the unique "Los Alamos Boreales" that is familiar to town residents.   Rutherford and Boone return to the front of the theater to look for Dick. In the distance they see two men shove a third man into a generic looking black car with an illegible license plate. Although they couldn't identify the kidnapped man, Rutherford is convinced that the government has taken Dick.     The session ends as Dr. Gardener enters the theater.     ------------------------   Bloodstone is an original Call of Cthulhu sandbox, designed by Under the Library's Keeper, and features weekly actual play / live play / real play sessions. I first “met” Pegg, when we started chatting over an amazing debut author.  Shortly afterward, I read her book in one of the Barbour collections (Lighthouses) and I loved her book (and it was almost if not the only one I loved in the collection). Since then, she's gone on to publish other historical books.  As a “Colonial to Post Civil War” author, her books span a good bit of history, but they all hold one thing in common–strong women, true history, everyone on all sides of coins coming out looking as bad and good as human nature can be and as history reflects. Note: links may be affiliate links, providing me with a small commission at no extra expense to you. If You Love Authentic Historical Fiction, Don't Miss This Author One of the things I love most about Pegg Thomas' writing is that she doesn't shy away from things that aren't exactly popular. If historical people did terrible things… she shows it.  If they did good things that don't fit the current narrative… she shows that, too. Because of this, you see a raw, gritty side to historical fiction that is often glossed over in books that prefer to dwell on a kinder, gentler past. In her first book of the Forts of Refuge series, Sarah's Choice, I got a chapter or two in and realized that Sarah was about to be raped. I can handle a lot in fiction, but that one thing is just too hard for me to get past, so I tend not to keep going when I see it coming. I then email the author and ask how much is involved. While I want to read the books, I also need to ensure I don't end up making my family deal with nightmares, you know? Pegg assured me that her book wasn't a “how-to” manual.  That cracked me up. And she's right. I went back and kept reading and guess what?  We know the horror of what Sara endures without seeing too much of it play out on the page.  Thank you, Pegg. While we chatted, Pegg Thomas told a bit about her writing process. This included a fun tidbit… Sarah's Choice was the first book that she can say “the Lord gave” it to her.  Usually, she struggles to get every word, but not with this one.  Alas, the other two in the series weren't that easy, either.  Oh, well.  Also, Pegg hinted that there will be two more books in the series eventually.  (Note: each book in this series stands alone but some characters may crossover). Pegg also pointed out that while this is Christian Fiction, it is also a bit of a “bridge” book between CF and mainstream.  The Christian themes are overt, and as one reader said (loosely paraphrased), “I didn't see Jesus' name written in the book, but Christ was definitely there.”  I love that. Sarah's Choice by Pegg Thomas Sarah Feight has her life planned with a loving husband, a promising new settlement, and big dreams to shape the future of trade on Pennsylvania's frontier. An Indian attack at dawn changes everything. When he pulls his freight wagons into Fort Pitt, Leith McCully never dreams he'll be conscripted into the militia and ordered to defend the fort. Worried about trader friends on his delivery route, he rides to their settlement and returns with Sarah, the only survivor. Fort Pitt is crowded to twice its capacity with the settlers who have taken refuge there and surrounded by the rising smoke of burned-out settlements. Tempers flare, disease breaks out, and the constant fear of the next attack has everyone on edge. Cully keeps an eye on Sarah because he feels responsible for her. And, though he doesn't admit as much, she tugs at his heart. Sarah sees Cully as the last link to her past. A friend of her husband's family. She's going to need someone she can trust, and she trusts Cully. Her rescuer. Are trust and admiration enough to help them survive the siege and its devastating consequences? Is there any hope for a future beyond? To learn more about Pegg Thomas (and to sign up for her newsletter and be entered into her drawings for a handknitted shawl!!!), visit her WEBSITE.  I love that she calls herself a “spinner of yarns.”  How well that fits TWO sides of her! Horrific Waukesha Deaths Preventable Result of Ill-Considered Bail Policies Amy Swearer / @AmySwearer / Zack Smith / @tzsmith / Cully Stimson / @cullystimson / November 23, 2021         John Chisholm, pictured, the rogue Soros-backed prosecutor in Milwaukee County, released Darrell Brooks from custody when he should have sought no bail. On Nov. 21, Brooks drove his car through a Christmas parade, killing five adults and injuring more than 40 people, including children. (Photo: county/Milwaukee.gov) Commentary By Amy Swearer @AmySwearer Amy Swearer is a legal fellow in the Edwin Meese Center for Legal and Judicial Studies at The Heritage Foundation. Zack Smith @tzsmith Zack Smith is a legal fellow in the Meese Center for Legal and Judicial Studies at The Heritage Foundation. Cully Stimson @cullystimson Charles “Cully” Stimson is a leading expert in national security, homeland security, crime control, immigration, and drug policy at The Heritage Foundation's Center for Legal and Judicial Studies. Read his research. After a summer of wildly destructive civil unrest followed by the looming shadow of the high-profile trial of Kyle Rittenhouse, residents of Wisconsin suffered another blow in the form of unspeakable tragedy. Five people were killed and more than 40 injured when a driver plowed through participants of an annual holiday parade, appearing to intentionally speed up and swerve into lines of marchers, before speeding off. Hours later, police arrested 39-year-old Darrell Brooks as the suspected driver of the vehicle. He is charged with five counts of homicide. Investigators are still looking into possible motives, including, according to some reports, the possibility that Brooks did not necessarily target the parade but was instead attempting to flee from a knife fight.   Whether the act was intentional or merely reckless and without regard to others, one thing is already clear—what happened in Waukesha was entirely preventable. Darrell Brooks should have been in jail several times over. The devastation he wrought happened only because grossly reckless bail policies touted by local officials enabled the release of an unrepentantly violent man whose actions routinely placed members of the community in serious danger. Brooks is a career criminal with a long rap sheet. His history of violence—including violence toward women—is well documented, and wide-ranging.   In 1999, Brooks pled guilty to felony battery with intent to cause bodily harm, and was sentenced to six months in jail and three years' probation. Over the next seven years, Brooks had a series of short stints in jail for various drug and obstruction charges. In 2006, he was convicted of felony statutory sexual seduction for impregnating a 15-year-old girl. Brooks was 24 years old at the time. He was sentenced to probation and required to register as a sex offender. In 2010, Brooks pled no contest to felony strangulation and suffocation charges, as well as to violating the terms of his probation. He was sentenced to 11 months in jail and three more years of probation. Brooks spent much of 2011 and 2012 in jail, serving two separate 180-day sentences for charges of drug possession and bail jumping, and a 37-day sentence for misdemeanor resisting arrest. In 2016, Brooks was arrested and charged with failing to obey Nevada's sex offender registration laws. He posted bail, then fled the state and never returned to court. He still has an active warrant out for his arrest in Nevada. In July 2020, Brooks was again arrested after allegedly getting into a fist fight with his nephew over a cellphone and then firing a gun at the nephew's car as the nephew drove away. Arresting officers found Brooks still in possession of the firearm as well as a small amount of meth. He was charged with a slew of serious felonies, including possession a firearm as firearm and two counts of second-degree recklessly endangering public safety with the use of a firearm. Brooks' bond was initially set at $10,000 but was quickly lowered to $7,500. He remained in custody until his Feb. 9 trial was postponed. His attorney then successfully argued for Brooks' bail to be dropped even lower, and on Feb. 21, Brooks posted $500 bond and was released. On Nov. 5, with his 2020 charges still pending, Brooks was again arrested and charged with several serious felony offenses after a woman—reportedly the mother of Brooks' children—told police that he purposefully ran her over with a vehicle after an argument. According to reports, the vehicular assault left tire marks on the woman's pants and injured her so severely that she was hospitalized. Incredibly, despite two decades of violent behavior, an open felony warrant in Nevada, routine failures to abide by his probation or bond conditions, and an active case involving the violent use of a weapon, Brooks was allowed to post $1,000 cash bail. By Nov. 11, he was back in the community. When all relevant information comes to light about possible motive or premeditation, it seems incredible that no one could have reasonably foreseen that Brooks would commit this specific type of violence and leave this amount of carnage in his wake. Brooks' propensity for violence and his lifetime spent disregarding the safety of others made a violent tragedy anything but unforeseeable. It also could have been foreseen that this kind of tragedy would inevitably occur as a result of the well-intentioned but ill-thought-out and poorly executed bail reform policies that progressives are putting into effect across the country. In fact, John Chisholm, the rogue George Soros-backed prosecutor in Milwaukee County who released Brooks when he should have sought no bail, issued a prophetic statement in 2007. He said: “Is there going to be an individual I divert, or I put into [a] treatment program, who's going to go out and kill somebody? … You bet. Guaranteed. It's guaranteed to happen.” He went on to argue, though, that “does not invalidate the overall approach.” We disagree. And now that the dire consequences of these rogue prosecutors' policies are sparking public backlash, Chisholm has called for an investigation into Brooks' “inappropriately low” bond. Unfortunately, this is emblematic of the rogue prosecutor movement more generally. They take a criminal-first, victim-last, passing-the-blame approach. And while the consequences here were undoubtedly tragic, it's far from the only example of rogue prosecutors' lax bond policies wreaking havoc on their communities. In Philadelphia, for example, rogue District Attorney Larry Krasner's policies led to the murder of Philadelphia Police Cpl. James O'Connor by an individual whom Krasner released through his lenient policies. Former U.S. Attorney Bill McSwain said, “The murder was the direct result of Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner's pro-violent defendant policies.” In Chicago, police have pointed to the “skyrocketing use of electronic monitoring as a key factor in the city's shocking 50% rise in killings” last year. And no wonder. In Kim Foxx's Chicago, there are apparently no consequences for violating bail terms. According to the Chicago Tribune, “About 400 people are charged every year with felony escape. During [her predecessor's] last three years in office, she dropped a total of 55 such cases, compared with 420 for Foxx.” And then there's San Francisco's Chesa Boudin. As two of us (Cully and Zack) have previously written, “Since taking office, Boudin has also been criticized for releasing suspects with long criminal records who have gone on—surprise, surprise—to commit other crimes.” The events in Wisconsin were tragic. But the nightmare was a completely avoidable consequence of a criminal justice system run by Soros' rogue prosecutors. Have an opinion about this article?
