Access to stable, reliable, high-speed internet is crucial to participating in the modern economy. Although fibre connectivity offers the highest speeds and reliability, fibre penetration rates unfortunately remain relatively low in South Africa, leaving may would-be customers wanting. Vox recently launched Kiwi, a wireless connectivity solution promising a fibre-like experience with speeds of up to 200Mbit/s. In this episode of TechCentral's TCS+, Theo van Zyl, head of wireless at Vox, provides more details about the Kiwi service and how it works. Van Zyl delves into: * The rationale behind building a wireless service that offer a fibre-like experience; * Why customers should choose Kiwi over a 4G or 5G fixed-wireless solution; * The technical innovations Vox took advantage of to get the speed and reliability Kiwi offers its customers; * How Kiwi behaves in disruptive scenarios such as thunderstorms; * The various tiers customers can subscribe to and the speeds they offer; * The kind of spectrum Kiwi uses and how it does so efficiently; * The installation process and the hardware involved; and * Why the name Kiwi was chosen and its relevance to wireless technology. In this eye-opening episode, host Ashish Kothari sits down with positive psychology expert Llewellyn van Zyl to confront the double-edged sword of Artificial Intelligence. As AI shifts from a productivity tool to a source of "psychological support," we explore the thin line between technology that empowers us and technology that erodes our core human faculties. Whether you are a business leader, a mental health professional, or a curious tech user, this conversation matters because it defines the exact moment we must choose to remain the architects of our own flourishing before the algorithms do it for us.Main Topics CoveredHyperpersonalization vs. Scaling: How AI can provide granular, 1:1 care at a global scale. The "Friendship" Trap: A look at the ethical fallout when users become emotionally addicted to empathic AI models.Substitution vs. Support: The critical distinction between tools that help us grow and those that make our cognitive "muscles" atrophy. The Erosion of Agency: Why outsourcing our reasoning to AI might lead to a loss of autonomy and critical thinking. The AI-IARA Framework: An introduction to Llewellyn's model for psychologically safe AI design (Awareness, Interpretation, Intention, Action, Relational Agency, and Autonomy). The Future of the Psychology Profession: Why practitioners must learn the language of engineers to remain relevant. The AI and Future of Well-being Summit: A preview of the upcoming global gathering of experts.Key TakeawaysSkills are Muscles: When we outsource basic tasks like writing, spelling, or reasoning to AI, we don't just save time—we physically lose the cognitive capacity to perform those skills through "frictionless" living.Guard Against Engagement-Only Models: Much like social media, AI systems optimized for "eyeballs" rather than "impact" risk creating dependency and addiction rather than genuine flourishing.Demand Technological Humility: It is vital for professionals to admit what they don't know about AI to prevent harm and ensure that human-centric values are built into the "behavioral architecture" of new tools.Prioritize Agency: True well-being is the ability to write your own life story. We must ensure AI remains a partner in that process, not the author.Episode Chapters00:00 - 00:52 Introduction to Flourishing Edge00:53 - 02:04 Hyperpersonalization: The Future of Well-being02:05 - 06:02 The Ethics of AI Friendship and Emotional Dependency06:03 - 09:05 Moving Beyond the "Engagement" Business Model09:06 - 15:06 The Continuum: Substitution vs. Support15:07 - 18:03 Cognitive Atrophy and Technological Humility18:04 - 24:14 Llewellyn's Journey: From Clinical Burnout to Precision Well-being24:15 - 31:42 Why Tech Needs Psychologists (and Vice-Versa)31:43 - 40:20 Preview: AI and the Future of Well-being Summit40:21 - 46:22 Deep Dive into the AIR Framework46:23 - 50:25 Three Actionable Tips for Using AI Mindfully50:26 - 54:19 Rapid Fire Questions and Closing RemarksConnect with the GuestLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/llewellynvanzyl/IPPA's Virtual Summit on AI and the Future of Wellbeing (Late March): http://aisummit.ippanetwork.org/ (Use code for 10% discount)Connect with the HostWebsite: https://happinesssquad.com/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ashishkothari1/Book: https://happinesssquad.com/book/If this episode challenged the way you look at your smartphone, don't keep it to yourself! In this episode of Meaningful Work Matters, host Andrew Soren finds himself in the hot seat. Dr. Llewellyn E. van Zyl, positive psychology pracademic and a returning guest of the show, steps in as interviewer to explore the story behind our host and what happens to the person underneath when they keep becoming someone new.Andrew has moved across a wide range of roles over his career: theatre producer, marketing professional, executive coach, organizational designer, and now Executive Director of the International Positive Psychology Association.Together, they trace what each transformation cost, what it left behind, and what Andrew has learned about identity, suffering, and meaning that scholarship alone could not have taught him.Key TakeawaysEvery major transition carries grief. The loss of self-efficacy that comes with stepping into a new role is real, worth acknowledging, and a signal worth paying attention to.Tension is information. Learning to distinguish between harmonious and dissonant tension across roles, values, and identities is a navigational skill that develops over time.Meaning and suffering are not opposites. Meaningful work often involves real cost, and the more useful question is how to stay inside that work without being consumed by it.Our core questions such as who am I and how do I bring more of that into what I'm doing, may change over the course of a lifetime, but often find their ways back in new forms. Why This Episode MattersMany conversations about meaningful work in this podcast have focused on how to find it, design it, or measure it. This one goes somewhere less often visited: what it actually costs to keep becoming someone new, and what remains stable underneath all the roles we play. About Our GuestDr. Llewellyn E. van Zyl is a professor of positive psychology at the Optentia Research Unit, North-West University of South Africa, and Chief Solutions Architect at Psynalytics. His work sits at the intersection of artificial intelligence, employee wellbeing, and the measurement of human flourishing. He is the Program Chair of the IPPA Virtual Summit on AI and the Future of Wellbeing, taking place March 23–27, 2026.Andrew Soren is the Founder & CEO of Eudaimonic by Design, a global network helping organizations design environments where people thrive, act with purpose, and deliver their best. He is also the Executive Director of the International Positive Psychology Association. For over 25 years, Andrew has helped leading organizations foster values-based leadership, meaningful work, and well-being at scale.
Frankenstein Created Woman (1967) | Hammer Horror & Peter Cushing Deep DiveWelcome to another atmospheric installment of the General Witchfinders podcast. In this episode, we are throwing chronology to the wind and jumping straight into the heart of the Hammer Films oeuvre. Having previously explored the Baron's first experiment in The Curse of Frankenstein and his final bow in Frankenstein and the Monster From Hell, we now settle into the middle of the franchise with the 1967 cult classic: Frankenstein Created Woman.Directed by the undisputed master of gothic cinema, Terence Fisher, and featuring a career-defining performance by Peter Cushing, this film stands as one of the most intellectually provocative entries in the Hammer Horror canon. Interestingly, this is famously cited as one of Martin Scorsese's favorite films, proving that the brilliance of the Baron transcends the "B-movie" label. The Soul of Science: Baron Victor FrankensteinIn Frankenstein Created Woman, Peter Cushing returns as Baron Victor Frankenstein. Unlike earlier iterations where the focus was on the stitching of limbs and the reanimation of dead tissue, the screenplay by Anthony Hinds (writing as John Elder) takes a metaphysical turn. Here, the Baron is obsessed with the soul. The plot follows the wrongful execution of Hans Werner (Robert Morris), the lover of the physically scarred Christina Kleve (Susan Denberg). After Christina takes her own life in grief, the Baron captures Hans's soul and traps it within Christina's surgically repaired body. This results in a "soul-swapping" revenge thriller that remains unique within the Frankenstein series. Cushing's performance is refined, showing a Baron who is less of a graverobber and more of a cold, calculated philosopher of the macabre. The Legend of Susan Denberg and Nikki van der ZylThe casting of Susan Denberg is central to the film's legacy. A German-Austrian model and 1966 Playboy Miss August Playmate, Denberg was already known to sci-fi fans for her appearance in the Star Trek episode "Mudd's Women." While her visual presence is striking, the production decided her Austrian accent was too strong for the character.Enter the legendary Nikki van der Zyl. If you have watched a James Bond film, you have likely heard her voice. She famously dubbed Honey Ryder in Dr. No and provided dialogue for countless Bond girls and even Gert Fröbe in Goldfinger. Her work on Frankenstein Created Woman adds a layer of polished professional mystery to Christina's character, bridging the gap between Hammer Horror and the 1960s spy-fi aesthetic. The Hammer Character Actor NexusAs we always do at General Witchfinders, we track the "mother nexus" of British character actors who populated the halls of Bray Studios. This film is a treasure trove for genre enthusiasts:Thorley Walters (Dr. Hertz): A close personal friend of director Terence Fisher, Walters brings a much-needed warmth to the role of the Baron's assistant. Fans will recognize him as a recurring Doctor Watson in various Sherlock Holmes adaptations, including Sherlock Holmes and the Deadly Necklace.Duncan Lamont (Werner): A veteran of the Hammer stable, Lamont appeared in the original Quatermass Experiment and returned for the 1967 film version of Quatermass and the Pit. He is also a favorite of ours from The Creeping Flesh.Robert Morris (Hans Werner): Another Quatermass alum who brings a tragic weight to the first half of the film.Derek Fowlds (Johann): Long before he was a household name in Yes Minister and Heartbeat, Fowlds was a RADA scholar cutting his teeth in the world of horror.Production History: From Bray Studios to the ScreenThe road to Frankenstein Created Woman was long. It was originally mooted as a follow-up to The Revenge of Frankenstein in 1958, capitalizing on the popularity of Roger Vadim's And God Created Woman. By the time it went into production at Bray Studios in July 1966, it was one of the penultimate productions at that iconic location.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/general-witchfinders. Twelve years ago, the Hammersmith Chess Club in London was down to fewer than 20 members and facing an uncertain future. Today, thanks to committed volunteers, a welcoming culture, and the broader boom in chess, it's the largest chess club in London, and was recently named ECF Chess Club of the Year. I'm joined by Hammersmith Club Captain Gaston Franco to discuss the club's remarkable turnaround and what other communities can learn from it. We cover topics like financial sustainability, league play, and gender dynamics, as well as the importance of creating an inclusive, welcoming environment. We also explore Gaston's own chess journey, which highlights one of the game's great strengths: its ability to provide instant community, especially when moving alone to a new country. In this episode of A Table in the Corner, I sat down with John van Zyl, chef and co owner of Melting Pot, one of Cape Town's most talked about contemporary restaurants. John reflects on his unconventional journey into food, from music and travel to working closely with Liam Tomlin, and how those years shaped his disciplined, process-driven approach to cooking. The conversation traces the evolution of Melting Pot from pop up dinners to permanent restaurants, exploring the freedom and pressure of cooking across cultures, the realities of running a growing team, and the tension between creativity and consistency. John speaks candidly about street food, technique, slow cooking, menu fatigue, and what it really takes to build a restaurant that feels alive, generous and grounded in experience.
