Preaching for the Fifth Sunday of Easter, Elizabeth Young, RSM offers a reflection on restoring women deacons as one way of responding to the current needs around us: "So what are the needs around us today? Who are the Hellenist widows who cry out for ministry at their own tables? ... How will each of us respond? How will we reach out? Our personal efforts can be strengthened by the response of the whole Church to delegate and to send. Why not complete the restoration of permanent deacons by authorising ministry from the other half of the population, and recognise women and men called to contribute by God, the community and needs around them?" Elizabeth Young, RSM comes from a farm in rural South Australia, Boandik country. After a degree in Circus Arts, she entered the Sisters of Mercy, professing her first vows in 2010. Elizabeth studied a Bachelor of Theology, Graduate Diploma of Teaching and Learning, and Master of Theology (Coursework). She is currently a Parish Life Coordinator in a remote town of New South Wales, where she is instituted as a Catechist to lead regular community liturgy in the absence of a priest, including baptisms and funerals. In 2021, she started the blog Liturgy on the Margins, along with the group Australian Catholics Exploring the Diaconate, which celebrates and promotes the ministry of permanent deacons, both present and potential. This includes the diaconal ministry of women who respond to needs that exist. Visit www.catholicwomenpreach.org/preaching/05072023 to learn more about Elizabeth, to read her preaching text, and for more preaching from Catholic women.
Easter Sunday - Matt. 28: 1-10 Elizabeth was brought up on a farm in the south of South Australia. Her father was a lay preacher in the Uniting Church, and their ministers were both men and women. However, she attended St Mary MacKillop's very first school in Penola, and was received into the Catholic Church along with family members. Elizabeth valued the sacramental worldview that she encountered and was inspired by all the religious leaders in her community. From a young age, she felt called to a vocation in religious and liturgical leadership, to share the Good News of Jesus Christ. However, her life took a turn through a few years of questioning her faith and completing a degree in Circus Arts. From there she discerned God's call to become a Sister of Mercy, professing her first vows in Adelaide in 2010. She has since studied a Bachelor of Theology, Graduate Diploma of Teaching and Learning, and Master of Theology (Coursework). Her ministries have been with youth, immigration detention centres, prisons, parish, school and ecumenical/interfaith relations. She is a Parish Life Coordinator in the remote town of Wilcannia, NSW, where she is instituted as a Catechist to lead the community in the absence of a priest in liturgy including baptisms and funerals. Elizabeth finds life in exploring the scriptures and the Church's liturgical/sacramental tradition together with those in marginal situations.

Anyone who met Ms. Anna Young would likely tell you the same thing. The 75 year old woman would be describe by many as a god-fearing Christian. Who could miss it by the adorned minivan with Jesus stickers and plate cover on the bumper. However, some would find it hard to be within her presence for more than a few minutes before the tightness in their chest, sweaty palms, and blood pumping became to much to bare. Why you may ask? Well before she was the elderly Anna Young, she went by Mother Anna. And if you ask me and the children who were in her care she was the devil in the flesh. Rethink Your Strategy and Get To It Can we talk about your business strategy coming into a post-pandemic economy? In this week's episode, I sat down for a candid talk with the brilliantly innovative owner of Flowers Talk Tivoli, Elizabeth Young. We are unpacking how she dug in and got creative to pull her flower shop through a global crisis, and we're giving you ideas on how you can move into this new economy with confidence, too. Hear what helped Elizabeth keep her business focused through fear, ever-changing Covid-19 protocols, being alone in her shop to fulfill orders, 80% of her flower supply disappearing overnight, and going from crickets to a boom in the demand for her shop's products. I can't wait for you to hear Elizabeth's advice on how to move out of analysis paralysis and let your creativity take the wheel to develop and execute new products and services. As well, if you're a high-touch kind of business with a lot of in-store customers, you might want to listen carefully to how Elizabeth took her interactive, highly personal approach, and brought it online. Oh, and if we've given you a craving for a bouquet of beautiful flowers (and you're in the Ottawa, Canada area) you can always reach out to Elizabeth at FlowersTalk.ca. It's taken eight years, but Australia looks like it might finally be ready to send some of its asylum seekers to New Zealand. Australia's Home Affairs Minister Karen Andrews is working with New Zealand to resettle asylum seekers who had been medically evacuated to Australia from its offshore detention centres. New Zealand first made the offer in 2013 to resettle up to 150 refugees annually. The offer has been repeatedly rebuffed. Elizabeth Young from multiculture support services, Kiwiclass, has been part of efforts to get Australia to reconsider. She spoke to Philippa Tolley.

It's the third week of Chris Evans Season and I am looking at his fourth comic book outing, this time he's special ops with an interesting taste in T-shirts and a strange sense of humour in 2010's The Losers. The murder of Ann Ogilby, also known as the "Romper Room murder", took place in Sandy Row, south Belfast, Northern Ireland on 24 July 1974. It was a punishment killing, carried out by members of the Sandy Row women's Ulster Defence Association (UDA) unit. At the time the UDA was a legal Ulster loyalist paramilitary organisation. The victim, Ann Ogilby, a Protestant single mother of four, was beaten to death by two teenaged girls after being sentenced to a "rompering" (UDA slang term for a torture session followed by a fatal beating) at a kangaroo court. Ogilby had been having an affair with a married UDA commander, William Young, who prior to his internment, had made her pregnant. His wife, Elizabeth Young, was a member of the Sandy Row women's UDA unit. Ogilby had made defamatory remarks against Elizabeth Young in public regarding food parcels. Eight weeks after Ogilby had given birth to Young's son, the women's unit decided that Ogilby would pay for both the affair and remarks with her life. The day following the kangaroo court "trial", they arranged for the kidnapping of Ogilby and her six-year-old daughter, Sharlene, outside a Social Services office by UDA man Albert "Bumper" Graham.

The latest episode of UPC’s Hope for the Animals Podcast is all about birds! We begin with an exploration of the wealth of scientific research revealing avian intelligence, emotional complexity, and sentience. Then we have an inspiring interview with Elizabeth Young, founder and director of Palomacy Pigeon and Dove Adoptions. Elizabeth shares the fascinating history of pigeons and inspiring stories about Palomacy’s rescue and adoption program. Elizabeth Young loved all animals but had no particular interest in pigeons. That is, until years ago, when she started volunteering at the San Francisco Animal Care & Control shelter, where she learned it was common for pigeons to come into shelters but never leave. The other animals—dogs and cats, rabbits and rats, parrots and snakes, farmed animals and wildlife—all had at least one rescue group to help them, but pigeons had none. Now with Palomacy Pigeon and Dove Adoptions, Elizabeth has saved the lives of more than 1,000 birds directly and helped countless others across the U.S. and beyond. She has come to know these charming birds and is mesmerized by their sweet nature. Listen to her moving story in Episode 6 of the Hope for the Animals Podcast.
