He is the founder of the Gangster Disciples, a Chicago street gang.Hoover was serving six life sentences at the ADX Florence prison facility in Fremont County, Colorado. He was already serving a sentence of 150 to 200 years for a conviction in Illinois state court for the 1973 murder of 19-year-old, William Young. However, in 1997, following a 17-year investigation, he was convicted of an additional 40 counts, including conspiracy, extortion, money laundering, and running a continuing criminal enterprise from inside the state prison, and received additional life terms in federal court. He has made multiple attempts to have his sentence shortened. On May 28, 2025, President Donald Trump commuted his federal prison sentence.American rapper and fellow Chicago native Kanye West has been a longtime advocate for Hoover's commutation. West urged President Donald Trump to do so at a televised White House event in 2018, hosted a "Free Larry Hoover" benefit concert alongside Drake in late 2021, and referenced Hoover in songs such as "Jesus Lord" and "River".Hoover must still serve his 150-to-200-year sentence for his 1973 murder conviction, but is eligible to seek parole on that charge since the crime was committed before Illinois abolished discretionary parole in 1978.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:20 UTC on Friday, 30 May 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Larry Hoover on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm generative Matthew.

It seems private credit in the real estate space is a hot topic all over the world, but maybe nowhere more-so than in Australia, where private credit has seen substantial growth of 10 percent to 12 percent per year over the past five years. Analyzing the situation during this episode is William Young, managing director of Cambridge Capital Partners, based in Melbourne. (03/2025)
William Young became CEO of Aerowave Technologies in January of 2021. While he has no regrets about his pursuit of the ETA path, his journey to the company's helm was a difficult one. His story is distinct in that he started out in a partnered, brokered search but ended up as a solo searcher, focusing on proprietary outreach in Dallas-Fort Worth and Boston. Once he closed on Aerowave, Will was met with a number of challenges, including a seller transition that ran over a year; COVID; supply chain issues; running a technical business with very little technical expertise of his own; early culture problems; and the ever-daunting task of hiring talented salespeople. In this conversation, Will also reflects on Aerowave's many tailwinds, his decision to implement a new enterprise resource planning system, the benefits of speaking directly with his customers, and how he views being CEO through the lenses of fatherhood. Though Will has some scars to show from his search process and early days at the company, listeners will learn a great deal from his accomplishments and his ultimate success in adapting the business to the life he wants to lead.

The Ideal Maternity Home was opened by Lila and William Young in the 1920's as a way to offer discreet birthing and adoption for unwed mothers and widows. But, greed got the best of them and they became more interested in making profits than offering quality healthcare. In this episode we'll talk about the illegal adoption business they were running, how they dealt with unmarketable babies, and why their victims were known as The Butterbox Babies. Jazmin recounts the butterbox babies story of Lila and William Young with killer reactions from the OG Broke Squad: Jack, Robert, and Alexa.
The Ideal Maternity Home was operated in Nova Scotia from 1928-1947 by Lila and William Young. The home served as a place for unwed mothers to give birth to their children outside the view of a disapproving society. It also had a much darker side: illegal adoptions without material consent or knowledge, disposal of "non-perfect" babies, indentured servitude, and horrible treatment of both mothers and children.
Listen in to the sermon from the Rev. James H. Littrell for the Memorial of William Newbold, May 28, 2022. Today's readings are: Lamentations 3:22-26,31-33 Romans 8:14-19,34-35,37-39 John 14:1-6 New Every Morning Fr. Jim Littrell May 28, 2022 The writer of the Book of Lamentations, a little bit of which we just heard, says to us: "The steadfast love of God never ceases. God's mercies never come to an end. They are new every morning. Great is thy faithfulness!" And then Paul, writing to the first Christians in Rome, that great imperial capital, from jail, from his cell facing a terrible death, writes that nothing in all creation will be able to separate all those early Christians and himself from that same steadfast love of God. And John, in that Gospel I just read, assures us that God's domain, God's dominion, the space of God, is more spacious and open and welcoming than any of us can begin to imagine. Using the metaphor of a house, he speaks to us of its endless, endless capacity to take us in. It's endless capaciousness. The steadfast love of God is as vast and nurturing and loving and hugging and warm and safe as anything any of us can imagine, and then so much more than that. So I am here to tell you this terrible morning, when every heart in this room is fractured, is in so much pain, that your son, your brother, your grandson, your cousin, your nephew, your friend William Connor Newbold is right now, in this very heartbroken time, saying to us, with Jesus, "do not let your hearts be troubled. I am fine. God is holding me close. And you would not believe how wonderful that is." But, he begs us with God, "please do believe it!" Heartbreak is a real thing, Leslie mused to me in one of our conversations this week. It's a real thing. It actually hurts. And she's right. Hearts break, and hearts in this holy place this morning are broken. And I believe that into that fracture, that brokenness, God's steadfast love and God's infinite Light is pouring right now. I want to tell you two things about that. First, heartbreak is like any other human fracture. It hurts. And it will heal, in time, and especially - and this is really important - especially if it is nurtured by your love and care for one another in the days and months and years ahead. And second, also like a broken bone, your broken hearts will heal, but they will never be the same. There will always be a space in them where William was. What I want you to believe with me is that he is, right now, right here, in this room, working with God to mend your hearts. He and God want you to laugh again. They want you to play again. They want you to see the colors of the world bright again. And they want you to love and care for one another in this moment and in the time ahead. And, also, they know you will weep. And weep. And weep. They know how sad you are, and will be. And they love you and all your tears so much. And they say, God and William, that even your pain cannot separate you from God's endless love. God loves you always and in every condition, and God will wipe away the tears from your eyes. "And how do I know that?" William says to us. How do we know that William is now held in God's love? "Well, here's how," William says to you: "I know because all my tears and my sadness and my pain are gone. Gone. All my pain is gone." The steadfast love of God never ceases. God's mercies never come to an end. They are new every morning! They are new this morning. There is a hymn I like a lot and I want to share a little bit of it with you. It's by a composer of contemporary hymns named Brian Wren. It's a prayer hymn, of sorts, inviting us to bring the many names of God into our hearts: he invokes in the hymn the God of all the stories we tell, the parables we tell of our God, the God who is a mother to us, nurturing, ordering, and piloting and caring, the God who is a loving father to us, hugging every child, a God he calls (and I resonate with this a lot!), "old aching God, gray with endless care, glad of good surprises, wiser than despair." And then Wren names this God, who I think he means to be Jesus, but which brings me back to William: "Young, growing God, eager, on the move, saying no to falsehood and unkindness,...giving all you have." The hymn ends with a kind of summary of God's names: "Great loving God," Wren writes, "never fully known, joyful darkness far beyond our seeing, closer yet than breathing, everlasting home." And that is exactly where William is: far beyond our seeing, closer yet than breathing, he is right there in the everlasting home which is God's steadfast love, from which nothing, nothing in all creation can separate us. Nothing at all, not now, not ever. Now how do I know that all those names, that William's very self, is wrapped up in all the names of God, in God's compassionate arms? Well, I guess my 79 years have taught me that. But, also, as Leslie likes to say, and as I heard this morning, there are signs. I am, theologically, most of all a Christian mystic. And so yesterday, as I was getting ready to come up here to the church and meet with Leslie and Will, I was listening, as I often do, to the BBC's afternoon concert, which in the morning when I'm getting ready for the day is happening in the evening there, which is morning our time. And there I am brushing my teeth when I hear coming out of the speaker the most beautiful music I've heard in a really, really long time. It was so amazing it made me stop brushing my teeth and just stop and listen to this music. It's some kind of organ music. I listen and I think, "What is this?" I think I hear in it a little Bach, but then the music moves into this kind of deep, powerful minor key, a kind of lament. It sounds to me like a kind of cry, almost. The chord just deepens and deepens in this minor key and then, gradually, that cry resolves in music that I can only describe as pure splendor. "What is this???" The music ends. I listen and an announcer tells me that what I have just heard is a transcription and augmentation for organ of a chorale, sure enough, by Bach, from his Easter Cantata. And this chorale, and this piece, is called: "Weigen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen," which means pretty much, Weeping, Lament, Worry, Fear. And this glorious music in which all of that is contained, all of what we are in the middle of right now, all of our Wagen and our Klagen and our Sorgen and our Zagen, all our weeping and all our lamenting and all our worrying and all our fear - all of that music was composed by Franz Lizst in 1862 right after the tragic death of his daughter. And that music is about the deepest sorrow a human being can experience, your sorrow, and it's based on and set smack in the middle of an Easter chorale, a cantada about the Resurrection. Well. I did this thing, I stood there, struck, with a toothbrush in my hand. And then I took my finger and put it on the little red dot to push the stream back, and then I listened to this music all over again, and I thought this: that music came to me directly from the great God who lifts us out of death back into life, over and over and over and over again until we are healed, and who at the last, takes us into God's endless life and light. And that amazing music arrived in my life, kindness of a courier, a heavenly courier whose name is William Connor Newbold. I am certain of it. He is joined with God's merciful love. He knows our weeping and lamentation and our worry and our fear in exactly the same way as God does, because they are joined together. And together, because they are joined, they are with Jesus, who is all compassion, and they say together to us, "The steadfast love of God never ceases. God's mercies never come to an end. They are new every morning. Great is thy faithfulness!" Amen. When we know people in our life are struggling, “what do I say to them?” is often the wrong question we ask ourselves. There's a better question we can ask that will comfort and encourage people. Listen in to learn more. Episode 148 left us hanging Episode 148 from last week talked about five things NOT to say to people close to us who are going through a rough patch in their life. I'll have a link to it in the show notes. So if we know what not to say, then what are helpful things we could say? We'll tackle this question in today's episode. Words matter I love words. I love people who write them well. I like how Donald Miller, author of Blue Like Jazz and other best-selling memoirs uses words. He incorporated as a company simply called “Donald Miller's Words.” Our daughter has a friend who does free-lance copywriting. She calls her business "Words for Sale." I like Anne Lamont and how she uses words. Of the many books she's written, one of my favorites is her book about 3 types of prayer. It's called Help. Thanks. Wow. Three simple words. Three powerful prayers. In talking about the wow of God, she frequently uses the phrase, “It's God showing off.” It's the best description of sunsets, the Grand Canyon, and childbirth I can think of - God showing off. In William P. Young's book, The Shack, he repeats the phrase “God is especially fond of you” in addressing, Mack, the main character of the book. What a beautiful phrase and powerful theological truth. “God is especially fond of you” These are all beautiful words. Words have their limits But words have their limits when it comes to knowing what to say to people going through a rough patch in their life. I find myself saying things like, “I am so sorry you're having to deal with this.” It's truly how I feel, but it seems hollow sometimes. When it comes to our friends dealing with a death, we often say “I'm sorry for your loss”, or if it's a sudden, tragic death, “I have no words.” And that's the problem, we often don't have words to express how we feel inside for the pain someone close to us is experiencing. So few of us are like Donald Miller, Anne Lamont, or William Young with our words. I so wish we had a larger menu, like they have at Chinese restaurants, of comforting words and phrases to choose from. Beyond Words But then I think, are better words really the answer? It seems to me words are just a means to an end, not the end itself. We use words to connect us with people, to show how our emotions align with theirs. To let them know we want to be part of the journey they are on in dealing with a loss or difficulty in their life. Words are the dots to connect our heart with the heart of another. Maybe there are other ways beyond words that connect us with each other. In last week's episode, I mentioned our friend whose 40-something daughter became very ill, and how our friend was filling in for her daughter by managing the household, helping her son-in-law, and caring for her grandkids. The weight of all that had to be done was overwhelming for our friend. Preparing meals, dealing with the ever-growing pile of laundry. All at the time she was caring for her very-sick daughter. What do I say to a friend who's feeling overwhelmed like this? My first thoughts went to one of the things mentioned in episode 148, God Never gives us more than we can handle. Thankfully I resisted that thought. Then several Bible verses came to mind. Verses I know our friend was well schooled in. Verses about how God is always there for us, how God cares for us when we are struggling. She may have even memorized them. When our friend shared the bad news about her daughter I don't remember saying anything, I just listened. And gave her my handkerchief she used to dab the tears from the corner of her eyes. It was the best I could do at the moment. A helpful quote Days later I came across a quote that I sent in a text to our friend. I wrote: “Here's a quote from Seth Godin I came across the other day that reminded me of you when you feel overwhelmed with doing all that your daughter does to manage the household. Godin said, ‘I'm pretty confident that when the Titanic went down, the deck chairs were cleaned and well-ordered. It's a shame no one talked about the icebergs.'” And then I added, “Keep up the good work in keeping your priorities straight! I'm continuing to pray for your daughter.” In my thinking, the housework that was crying out for attention was her deck chairs on the Titanic. The physical and emotional needs of her daughter were the icebergs - the most important things to attend to. All analogies break down at some point, but in using the words from this quote I was trying to affirm her wisdom in caring for her daughter at the expense of the piles of laundry. It was the best I could do at the moment. Sometimes the best we can do to connect with people is to show we are thinking about them and remembering their struggles, even when we're not together. Our words are not as important as what we do. So what does all this mean for YOU? I wonder if there are people in your life going through a difficult time who would appreciate you connecting with them. And maybe doing so without words. Connect with them by showing you haven't forgotten their struggles and that you are paying for them. Here's the main takeaway I hope you remember from today's episode When people in our life are struggling, “What do I say to them?” isn't as important a question to ask as “What can I do?” I'd love to hear any thoughts you have about today's episode. Closing In closing, I hope your thinking was stimulated by today's show, to reflect and to act by letting someone you know who's struggling that you haven't forgotten them. That you are praying for them, and that they are not alone in whatever difficulty they are going through. It will bring out the best in you and go a long way in helping you experience the joy of relationships God intends for you. Because as you know by now, You Were Made for This. That's it for today. In the meantime, spread a little joy in your relationships this week. Until we meet up again next week, goodbye for now. Curated News The Almanac A Seasonal Guide to 2021by Lia Leendertz Mercy Park garden adds 3 new sculptures | The Joplin Globe | Emily Younker Important Events November 3, 1766 On this day, a young botanist named William Young returned to America after receiving the title of the Queen's botanist. William Young was born in Germany, and he immigrated to the United States when he was just a little boy at the age of two. His family settled in Philadelphia and eventually became neighbors to one of America's first botanists, John Bartram. Growing up, William spent a great deal of his childhood exploring Bartram's gardens. Bertram even encouraged him to pursue botany, and he took him along on some collecting trips. By all accounts, William was a smart and self-directed young man. When he was in his early twenties, he decided that he wanted to get the attention of the brand new Queen of England, Queen Charlotte. Charlotte was the bride of George III, and William put together a little parcel for her - a little gift of seeds - along with a letter (no doubt congratulating her on her wedding and introducing himself as an American botanist.) Charmed by William's thoughtful gift, Charlotte decided to summon William to England. She wanted him to come to England to study botany for a year and then return to America to collect plants on behalf of the royal family. And so that's exactly what William Young ended up doing. When he left America, he had no formal training in botany. He was, however, full of potential and eager to learn. This opportunity in England was an extraordinary chance for William to learn the science of botany from the worldwide center for botanical research: England. At the same time, this series of events caused a bit of jealousy and a shock in the American botanical community. John Bartram himself was an old man by the time this happened for William, and he made comments along the lines of, "Hey, I've been in America, collecting and cultivating for decades, and I've never received an offer like this." And so many of the American botanists really couldn't believe William's good fortune. His trip was essentially like winning a botanist lottery with the promise not only of training but steady work and support from a generous, well-funded patron. Despite Charlotte's hopes for William, his peers were dubious of William's ability to measure up to the task. While William was passionate about botany, he hadn't demonstrated any particular acumen or success that should have garnered the kind of opportunity that had come his way. The bottom line was, they didn't think William had it in him. Yet, William's critics were not entirely fair. After all, William had been bold enough to send that package of seeds to the new Queen. And he was smart enough to leverage his German heritage when he wrote to her. Charlotte had German heritage as well, and when she first came to England, she surrounded herself with other Germans who spoke her language and shared her history, customs, and culture. Summoning William to England was just another example of Queen Charlotte making herself feel more at home away from home. When William arrived in England, he was in his early twenties. He had a huge learning curve to conquer when it came to his new station in life. He had no idea what it was like to be in front of royalty or how to behave in Royal circles. Of course, William didn't have a ton of life experience as a young person in his twenties. So, he performed exactly as one might imagine he would: dazzled by the luxury and lifestyle, he quickly began racking up bills. With each passing month, he found himself deeper in debt until he ended up arrested and in jail for the large debts that he owed. Incredibly, it was the Queen who bailed him out - but not before sending him home to Philadelphia with the hopes that he could still perform as a plant collector in America. And so it was on this day. November 3 in 1766, that William returned to America with his new title as botanist to the King and Queen. Instead of being humbled by his financial misdeeds, William returned proud and haughty. He strutted about under the auspices of his Royal appointment, but his behavior didn't endear him to his American peers. They heard the rumors about how William had acted when he was in England and they were turned off by his peacocking and attire. In a letter to the botanist Peter Collinson, John Bartram wrote, “I am surprised that Young is come back so soon. He cuts the greatest figure in town and struts along the streets whistling, with his sword and gold lace.” And then Bartram confided that William had visited his garden three times, feigning respect and bragging about his yearly pay from the Royal family, which amounted to 300 pounds sterling. Now William was no fool, and it's clear that he craved acceptance from his peers. At the same time, he was probably aware of how some of his peers truly felt about him. But he did not dwell on this conundrum and focused on his work. He still had collecting to do for the King and Queen, and he needed to mend fences on that front if he ever hoped to make it as a botanist. And so, he set off for the Carolinas, where he spent an entire year collecting plants. Then, he carefully and quite expertly packaged up all of the plants that he had found and traveled back to London - personally bringing all of these plants to the King and Queen and hoping to get back in their good graces. Although William arrived in England only to be refused to be seen by the King and Queen, he still managed to make his trip a resounding success. By shepherding rare, live plants in wonderful condition from the Carolinas to England, he impressed English collectors. And there was one plant in particular that really helped to repair and save William's reputation, and that was the Venus Fly Trap. William brought many live specimens of the Venus flytrap to England, and as one might imagine, the plant caused a sensation. Without the flytrap, there was probably little that William could say to restore his reputation. So in this sense, his plants, especially the Venus flytrap, did the mending and the PR work for him. What William did was essentially no different than an apologetic spouse who brings their partner flowers after a fight. That's exactly what William did on this trip when he returned and presented the Venus flytrap to England. One other fact about this trip is that William proved himself to be an expert plant packer. Clearly, one of the biggest challenges for early botanists was keeping specimens alive - that was really hard to do. Dead specimens didn't garner anywhere near the attention or pay of living plants. William's skill in this area underscores just how intelligent and thoughtful William could be. A 1771 letter to Humphrey Marshall detailed William's packing technic: William Young sends his plants very safely by wrapping them in moss and packing them pretty close [together] in a box. He ties the moss in a ball around the roots with a piece of packthread...It's very surprising how well they keep in this manner. William's method differs little from the way plants are packaged and sent by mail today. William ends up devoting his life to botany. He returned to American and collected plants in the Carolinas, returning to England when he had a full shipment. William mastered his collecting strategy over his lifetime - returning again and again to the Carolinas, scouring the wilderness for rare plants like the Venus flytrap that had brought him so much success. Along the way, William continued to struggle financially as he paid his debts. But by the end of his life, William was able to get his affairs in order, and he actually died a fairly wealthy man. Tragically, he died young at the age of 43. In December of 1784, William decided to set out once again for the Carolinas. Unbeknownst to him, he was going on what would become his final collecting trip. He never did reach the Carolinas. He only made it as far as Maryland, where he collected along a waterway known as Gunpowder Falls, where he fell into the river and died after being swept away by the current. His body was found about seven weeks later. November 3, 1794 Birth of William Cullen Bryant, American poet. William drew inspiration from the natural world. He once wrote a lovely verse about roses: Loveliest of lovely things are they, On earth, that soonest pass away. The rose that lives its little hour Is prized beyond the sculptured flower. William also wrote about the month of November in a little poem called A Winter Piece. ...When shriek'd The bleak November winds, and smote the woods, And the brown fields were herbless, and the shades, That met above the merry rivulet, Were spoil'd, I sought, I loved them still,—they seem'd Like old companions in adversity. November 3, 1841 Birth of Eugenius Warming, Danish botanist. Eugenius was one of the founders of modern plant ecology. He's credited with writing the first ecology textbook with his book, Oecology of Plants: An Introduction to the Study of Plant Communities (1895). Unearthed Words She went to the window. A fine sheen of sugary frost covered everything in sight, and white smoke rose from chimneys in the valley below the resort town. The window opened to a rush of sharp early November air that would have the town in a flurry of activity, anticipating the tourists the colder weather always brought to the high mountains of North Carolina. She stuck her head out and took a deep breath. If she could eat the cold air, she would. She thought cold snaps were like cookies, like gingersnaps. In her mind, they were made with white chocolate chunks and had a cool, brittle vanilla frosting. They melted like snow in her mouth, turning creamy and warm. ― Sarah Addison Allen, The Sugar Queen Grow That Garden Library Genealogy for Gardeners by Simon Maughan and Dr Ross Bayton This book came out in 2017, and the subtitle is Plant Families Explored & Explained. Anything that has genealogy and gardening in the title is a book that I'm interested in. Before I get into this particular review, I should mention that this book is part of one of my favorite garden series by the RHS. So in this series is the book Latin for gardeners as well as botany for gardeners. And now this book Genealogy for Gardeners is designed to help you explore and understand plant families - and plant family trees, which to me is even more exciting. Now you may be wondering why. Well, I think the authors do a great job of explaining that in the preface to their book. They write, While most of us think of plants, that's belonging to one big happy family. The fact is they don't. There are hundreds of different plant families, which botanists have cleverly grouped together using what they know of family histories and genealogy and now, of course, DNA to bring some sense and order to more than a quarter of a million different plant species. But why should this matter to you as a gardener, aside from just wanting to become more knowledgeable about plant families? Well, here's the explanation from the authors: Plant families are all around us. Whatever the time of year, go for a walk and look for wild or garden plants. You'll be surprised at how many plant families are represented within a small radius of your home. Even in your own garden, there will be a fantastic genealogy of plants. Thanks largely to the efforts of plant collectors and horticulturists who brought the plants into cultivation from the four corners of the world. When it comes to being a good gardener making connections is what it's all about. And if you are faced with a strongly acidic soil, and know that rhododendrons will grow, then you can broaden your planting ideas to include other plants in the same family, such as Heather. Mountain Laurel, leather leaf, blueberries, and others. If you are designing with plants, you may know that all plants and a particular family, and share certain features, which enables you to mix displays effectively and extend your range. Now that is a very compelling reason to get to know your plant families. One of the things that I love about this particular series of books is that the illustrations are incredible. The editors have pulled images of botanical art that truly are the best example of some of these plants. The beauty of these books, including the cover, just is not rivaled. In fact, the minute I spot these books, they just have a look and a feel to them - I know immediately that it's part of this series from the RHS. These books are in my office on a special little bookshelf of books that I reference all the time, and this little series from the RHS is such a gem. This particular book about plant family, garden, genealogy - Basically the genealogy of plants- is one that I go back to again and again, and again. So this is a fantastic book. As I mentioned, the illustrations are great. It is very clearly laid out. They've really done the heavy lifting when it comes to simplifying this material, making it very understandable and accessible. And yet, they do not dumb it down. That's not what this book is about. If you want a book on this topic that is exceptionally clear And is a delight to read, then this is the book that you've been waiting for. So, whether you're a landscape designer, a horticulture student, or just an amateur gardener, Genealogy for Gardeners will help you better understand and utilize plant families in your garden. This book is 224 pages of plant families and plant family trees - and it's part of one of the top garden book series on the market today. You can get a copy of Genealogy for Gardeners by Simon Maughan and Ross Bayton and support the show using the Amazon Link in today's Show Notes for around $20. Today's Botanic Spark Reviving the little botanic spark in your heart November 3, 1903 On this day, The Cherokee Sentinel (Cherokee, Kansas) published this heartwarming blurb about the gardens in the Heartland of America. Here's what they wrote: It's November, and gardens and flowers are as green and beautiful as in summer. Verily, Kansas is an American Italy and the garden spot of the world. Well, I don't know how true that was, and I question whether that was written for the benefit of enticing immigrants to come to Kansas. Nevertheless, I found it very sweet, and I thought it was a great way to end the show today. Thanks for listening to The Daily Gardener. And remember: "For a happy, healthy life, garden every day."

Lila and William Young seemed like a match made in heaven. With no children of their own, the couple started the Ideal Maternity Home in the late 1920s in East Chester, Nova Scotia, as a safe haven for unwed women to deliver their babies in secret. In return, Lila and William gave the babies to a good home with adoptive parents. But this was all just a front for greed, lies, and murder. The murder of Ann Ogilby, also known as the "Romper Room murder", took place in Sandy Row, south Belfast, Northern Ireland on 24 July 1974. It was a punishment killing, carried out by members of the Sandy Row women's Ulster Defence Association (UDA) unit. At the time the UDA was a legal Ulster loyalist paramilitary organisation. The victim, Ann Ogilby, a Protestant single mother of four, was beaten to death by two teenaged girls after being sentenced to a "rompering" (UDA slang term for a torture session followed by a fatal beating) at a kangaroo court. Ogilby had been having an affair with a married UDA commander, William Young, who prior to his internment, had made her pregnant. His wife, Elizabeth Young, was a member of the Sandy Row women's UDA unit. Ogilby had made defamatory remarks against Elizabeth Young in public regarding food parcels. Eight weeks after Ogilby had given birth to Young's son, the women's unit decided that Ogilby would pay for both the affair and remarks with her life. The day following the kangaroo court "trial", they arranged for the kidnapping of Ogilby and her six-year-old daughter, Sharlene, outside a Social Services office by UDA man Albert "Bumper" Graham.

Episode 157 - From the late 1920s until after the Second World War, Lila and William Young ran the Ideal Maternity Home and Sanitarium for Unwed Mothers at East Chester, Nova Scotia. The pair have been referred to as ‘baby farmers’ who sold healthy newborns to wealthy couples with the means to pay and left the less viable to die of starvation. Estimates are that more than 100 and as many as 400 to 600 babies may have died in their care. Many of these deceased infants were quietly buried in wooden butter boxes at various sites around the area, while it is believed that others may have been disposed of in the nearby Atlantic Ocean. An introduction to LandDesign's brand new, cross office podcast!
Steven Carter-Bailey was a finalist on GBBO in 2017 (his series is still on All4, if you haven’t seen it). He won three star bakers and several of those ever-elusive Hollywood Handshakes during his time on the show. He also won the New Year’s Day Bake Off this year and even got a Hollywood hug!!! Steven has worked as a special reporter for ITV news, appeared on the Last Leg on Channel 4 and is currently very busy appearing at food festivals all around Britain. I am a huge Great British Bake Off fan and I’m obsessed with his Instagram (photos of incredible cake and a cute British bulldog is= Instagram gold) so it was great to be able to meet and chat with him. Steven was incredibly open and honest and this was at times a very emotional interview. We chatted about; the elaborate lies he had to tell to keep his participation on GBBO a secret. feeling different to his peers whilst growing up. what it was like growing up gay and Mormon. experiencing homophobia from teachers. coming out to his sister and friends. why his grandmother was the first person he told. how his mother reacted when he came out to her. how he has struggled with his weight over the years. experiencing homophobia as an adult. and his enduring crush on a certain Mr William Young. Your hosts today: Lynn, Levon, Leo, and Marc ListenEN_Interview_2-20180706-WIE20 Remembering the first and almost forgotten WWII invasion of Europe Canada's Seaforth Highlanders 'A' company in the Salso Valley, Sicily - August 1943. The Seaforths posing with a German soldier that they just captured along with three German MG-34 machine guns and Nazi flag. (Seaforth Highlanders website) It was the first mass invasion of Europe in the Second World War and helped in the planning for the later D-Day. It was a massive, highly coordinated invasion with fleets sailing from the U.S, Africa, and England all closely timed to arrive off the shores of Sicily on July 10, 1943. Some 25,000 Canadians were involved as the Allies moved to push the Germans out of Sicily, and later Italy. And while Churchill had described this as the "Soft-underbelly of Europe", it was anything but. The fighting was as intense and relentless as the burning heat of a Sicilian summer. By Aug. 7, the Allies had taken the island and would move on to mainland Italy. But this first invasion, called Operation Husky, has been seemingly forgotten, to be replaced by the far better recorded D-Day invasion of Normandy a year later. A Canadian businessman from Montreal, Steve Gregory, wants to make sure the memory is not forgotten. He founded the Op Husky Project and is currently leading a commemoration group of civilians, military personnel, and re-enactors who are walking the 20-day route of the Canadians through Sicily, leaving plaques and memorial markers of fallen Canadians along the way. Marc spoke to Steve Gregory before he left. Cyber-bullying It’s estimated that 20 to 40 per cent of children and youth in Canada experience online bullying. (iStock) It's summer in Canada and that means kids are out of school and have a lot more free time on their hands. This could often mean a lot more time spent online. That might also mean a lot more opportunity for cyber-bullying. It's estimated that anywhere from 20 to 40 per cent of children and youth have been victims of some form of online bullying or harassment. The effects can be long lasting, with the mental and emotional trauma lasting into adulthood. The Canadian Red Cross offers several programs to help them and their parents prevent and deal with cyber-bullying. Lynn spoke with Alison Richard, senior advisor on education at the Canadian Red Cross. Another UNESCO World Heritage Site in Canada Pimachiowin Aki is home to pictographs that were created more than 5,000 years ago. (Pimachiowin Aki Corporation/Youtube) The UNESCO World Heritage Committee declared on Sunday an expanse of boreal forest spanning the Manitoba–Ontario boundary as a mixed cultural and natural World Heritage Site, marking the first time a Canadian site is recognized for both its natural and cultural characteristics. In the Ojibwe language the name of the region Pimachiowin Aki means "the land that give life". The UNESCO designation is the result of a 16-year-long campaign by the four First Nations groups in the region. Levon spoke with William Young of Bloodvein First Nation, co-chair of the Pimachiowin Aki Corporation.
William Young of Bloodvein First Nation, co-chair of the Pimachiowin Aki Corporation, speaks about what the UNESCO designation of Pimachiowin Aki as Canada's first mixed cultural and natural World Heritage Site means for the area's four Anishinaabe communities – Poplar River, Bloodvein River, Pauingassi and Little Grand Rapids First Nations.
