I was thinking about Prahlāda Mahārāj. kaumāra ācaret prājño dharmān bhāgavatān iha durlabhaṁ mānuṣaṁ janma tad apy adhruvam arthadam (SB 7.6.1) He talked about how one should start the process of education very early. He got direct knowledge from Nārada Muni. But most people don't get that benefit, so it's very difficult to be on track. In fact, it is impossible without some knowledge intervention. anarthopaśamaṁ sākṣād bhakti-yogam adhokṣaje lokasyājānato vidvāṁś cakre sātvata-saṁhitām (SB 1.7.6) The Bhāgavatam says most people are in ignorance: lokasyājānato vidvāṁś. Cakre sātvata-saṁhitām— Śrīla Vyāsadeva's anxiety was that everyone should have the Bhāgavatam, or I should say, his anxiety is that everyone doesn't have the Bhāgavatam, and they should have it. Our whole bent in Kṛṣṇa consciousness is towards education. Those who come can hear, and those who can't come, they should be able to hear also. We should reach out to them and give them an opportunity. Humans can self-educate also, in the sense that if they're smart enough to learn how to read—or even if they can't read, if they just hear from another person who's giving parampara knowledge—then they can come out of ignorance. At San Francisco airport we would go and sit down with people, and mostly we were looking for hippies—people with longer hair—because we thought nobody else would take it. We would sit down next to them like we were just sitting there randomly. And then we would turn to them and go, 'Hey, you want to see something far out?' They would go, 'What do you have?' We would say, 'No, no, this is really far out. Check this out.' And we would show them the pictures in the Kṛṣṇa book. Then, people would get attracted. So there has to be something to be attracted to. Lord Caitanya— gaura-vāṇī-pracāriṇe, Śrīla Prabhupāda came and said, 'Here is Lord Caitanya's teaching.' It's about describing the spiritual world and our relationship with the Supreme Person. Minus that—āruhya kṛcchreṇa paraṁ padaṁ tataḥ—everyone works hard for nothing and falls down from their imagined position of liberation. Conclusion: Lord Caitanya is the best. He preaches the Bhāgavatam perfectly because He is Kṛṣṇa. He has come to show people how to do this, how to become free from weakness of the heart. Anybody can do it. And the chanting part—Kṛṣṇa is the ultimate, because everything is contained within the mantra. It's a very specific path; it's not willy-nilly. He explains it very clearly. Śrīla Prabhupāda, understanding completely how to present it, brought it and gave it even to the Westerners—pāścātya-deśa-tāriṇe. The pāścātya-deśa: he came and gave the same teachings of Lord Caitanya. So now that Prabhupāda has left, He gave us the instruction to carry it on. Whatever or however we feel about ourselves or our abilities, we have to rise to the occasion and give mercy, especially in the Western countries. As I was saying this morning: bhārata-bhūmite haila manuṣya-janma yāra. janma sārthaka kari' kara para-upakāra. We have to do para-upakāra—the greatest benefit to human society—by distributing the message of Lord Caitanya, especially if you have any roots in Bhārata, it's our duty. This is really nice thing—anywhere you live, if you can come out. We didn't get a very good view of it today because there's cloud cover and all these buildings, but it's nice to come out and watch the sunrise every morning. It's a glorious thing. It's nice to chant a few mantras, like the Gayatri mantra, and there are others. Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam says every time the sun rises and sets, it takes away our āyu. We get a prescribed number of days along with our birth—thrown in for free—but it is expiring day by day when the sun comes up and goes down. Poetically it says ( SB 2.3.17): āyur harati vai puṁsām udyann astaṁ ca yann asau The sun is speaking to us as it goes overhead, saying, " I am taking away our life. Another day is gone. You never get it back. Except for one who is engaged in discussing Kṛṣṇa and Kṛṣṇa consciousness." This message puts the punctuation on the entire series. As the final episode, it brings the entire storyline in for a beautiful landing (pun intended). We follow Wilbur Wright to New York City and his final public flight. It is there that we are freshly stirred to remember that--since we never know when our last flight is going to be flown--we should fly every flight with all the gusto we possess, believing it may very well be our final one.

Throughout Christian history, the greatest longing of the believer has always been to go home to be with Jesus. As the Apostle Paul said, “to live is Christ, but to die is gain.” The world is unable to look at death as gain, but the Christian does. This message parallels the Homecoming welcome of the Wright brothers in Dayton, Ohio in 1909 with our future homecoming in Heaven. It's a beautiful meditation that is sure to move and inspire.

The Wright Brothers built magnificent flying machines. Many of them were officially retired due to crashes in the early years of flight discovery. But there was one particular flyer that was not magnificent—it was tattered, ripped, re-stitched. It was built differently than all the others. Out of necessity, it was built out of broken and smashed pieces. And yet it was THIS tattered flying machine that was used to demonstrate to the world the miracle of flight. It sounds a bit like the Christian life, doesn't it?

September 17, 1908 tragedy struck. At Ft. Myers, in Washington D.C., Orville Wright had broken seven aeronautical world records over the previous two weeks. He was on top of the world. And then a grief intruded into the Wright Brother's storyline. But, as in every good story, grief is never the final chapter, it's merely a difficult stretch along the way which works as a catalyst for even a greater triumph in the end.

In September 1908 all the pressure is on Orville Wright. In August, his older brother, Wilbur, amazed the world over in Le Mans, France, demonstrating the abilities of the Wright's flying machine before a skeptical Europe. But now it's Orville's turn to show his stuff in front of skeptical America. On September 3, 1908 the pressure on Orville is nearly crushing. His task seems impossible. How can he somehow dazzle like Wilbur did in France? In many ways, we all experience this same unusual pressure when we realize that we are called to follow in the dazzling footsteps of Jesus Christ. Can it possibly be done?

After years of put-downs, ridicule, and mockery the day finally arrived for Wilbur and Orville Wright to show the world that they actually were flyers and not liars. In Le Mans, France on August 8, 1908, the stage was set for one of the most extraordinary public breakthroughs in history. There is an August 8, 1908 in every life that lives for Truth—when faith is made sight and the clouds roll back like a scroll. And, oh, is it a special day.

Wilbur and Orville, even after discovering human-controlled flight on December 17, 1903, still traversed difficulty after difficulty in convincing everyone that they did indeed accomplish the feat. From December 1903 to August 1908, the Wrights were accused of being liars instead of flyers. Each of our lives has a segment like this-a stretch of particular difficulties that define us either as failures or phenoms. But, following this challenging stretch, the much-anticipated breakthrough awaits us all—the day that all the hard work pays off. But right before this big day is the bread and cheese moment. The Wright Brothers headed back to Kitty Hawk, NC in 1907 for the expressed purpose of getting alone and remembering afresh how to fly. They hadn't flown for two and a half years and they had become a bit rusty in the art. How often we need the same thing in our spiritual lives—a return to wilderness, the desert, the solitude in order to rekindle the heavenly fires in the soul.

Rumor has it that everyone has a price. Supposedly, even the most virtuous man or woman, the most stouthearted, have their breaking point—the price point at which they are willing to compromise. However, those concocting such theories have never met Jesus Christ—a man who had no price and was totally and completely unpurchasable. This chapter in the Wright Brothers' story tests them on this very theory. Will they compromise or will they stand firm. History will tell.
