Each week we sit down with Matt Stringer, CEO of RNIB, to look at some of the big stories coming from the UK sight loss charity. Matt began this week by talking about the great news that the government have decided to scrap the closures to railway ticket offices following thousands and thousands of blind and partially sighted people taking part in the consultation and writing to their MP's as well as all the campaigning work the RNIB and our sight loss sector partners have done around the proposed closures. Then to the new RNIB #BeforeYouAsk campaign which was launched this week. Finally to the new Netflix series ‘All the Light We Cannot See' based on Anthony Doerr's Pulitzer prize winning Novel of the same name, set in the final days of WWII, as the paths of Marie-Laura a blind French girl and Werner a German soldier collide with Marie-Laura being played by Aria Mia Loberti in her first major screen role as a blind Actor. All the partnership work between the RNIB and Netflix around access to TV and film for visually impaired people and the preview screening of the first episode to an invited audience of blind and partially sighted people on Monday 30 October 2023 at the Everyman Cinema, Broadgate, London. If you, or someone you know, would like information on the support and services available from RNIB, go to www.rnib.org.uk You can also call our Helpline on 0303 123 9999 or ask Alexa to call RNIB's Helpline. #RNIBConnect Image shows a smiling Matt

On Wednesday 28 September 2022 at the Everyman Cinema, King's Cross, Central London over 100 people gathered for the preview screening of the TV, film, and multi-media ad for the new RNIB ‘See the Person, Not the Sight Loss' campaign and RNIB Connect Radio's Toby Davey was there to capture the atmosphere and chat with some of the people involved in the new ad and those behind the new campaign. Toby caught up with RNIB Chief Executive Mat Stringer to find out what it was like seeing the ad for the first time on the big screen and to find out a bit more about how the ‘See the Person, Not the Sight Loss' campaign will be helping to change the public's perception of sight loss. The multi-media campaign will appear on TV, Video on Demand, and in cinemas throughout October following its launch on Tuesday 4 October 2022. The awareness campaign will also be supported by social and digital activity. Changing public perceptions of sight loss is fundamental to RNIB's goal to create equity – to do that the RNIB must not only change people's attitudes but their behaviour. As the RNIB embark on a new chapter in our mission to create a more inclusive world with blind and partially sighted people, this campaign kicks off a 25-year ambition to change the public's attitudes and behaviours towards people with sight loss. More details about the ‘See the Person, Not the Sight Loss' campaign can be found by visiting the RNIB website - https://www.rnib.org.uk (Image shows RNIB logo. Toby caught up with visually impaired Actor Eli London who stars as Ava the main character in the ad and Jesse Lewis Reece the Director of the ad to find out about how they both worked together on the ad, how much the character of Ava reflects on some of Eli's own experiences as a person with sight loss plus how much Jesse worked on all the versions of the ad to make it authentic to life for young blind and partially sighted people and how he worked very closely with the RNIB and Eli of course to make the ad represent what life is truly like for someone who is dealing with sight loss. Key Moments “I think for anybody it's important for your own personal brand and your personal experience of what you want to do and having a vision around how you want to be perceived. Rory [7:20] “you want to do things, or at least I certainly do want to do things that are pushing my boundaries and doing things that are slightly different” Katie [8:29]“I don't know if it's a good thing or a bad thing, but I don't see work as work, its clique ‘Find a job you love and you'll never work a day in your life' but it is actually true. Rory [8:46]“If I'm at the cinema and I enjoy myself personally, but I always think how can I take some of these ideas and take it into my world? Rory [9:10]“for anyone out there listening, don't be afraid to just try something, if it doesn't work no one is really going to see it.” Rory [12:57]“I think we're seeing more now, like gym shark, Younger and more vibrant start-ups that have that bravery in them!” Katie [13:36]“I think that's a recipe for success, when you're thinking about your marketing campaigns, you want to do things that are going to give you stand out.” Katie [13:51]“By creating a brand that people see as an entertainment brand or personal care brand it means agencies in London wanting to work with us and giving us ideas.” Rory [14:51]“The ideas may be similar but actually I buy into the people and I buy into that person so if it's a neck and neck creatively I go ‘well I want to work with them' so it's important and people forget that.” Rory [26:18]
Ahead of Friday's Drive I caught up with director, producer and writer Max Newsom to discuss his new film “Iceland Is Best.” The film tells the story of Sigga, a 17 year-old girl trying to leave home in Iceland, and make her way to California. Filmed on location in an unforgiven and stunning Icelandic landscape Max had plenty of stories to tell about the production from battling gale-force winds and unpredictable snowstorms to the real-life inspiration of the film and the incredible journey that making the movie took Max, the cast and the crew on. We discussed a few interesting film industry insights too from financing a movie and how it works casting Hollywood A-listers to the importance of shooting a pre-production mood board and digital filming vs film stock. Iceland Is Best is coming to selected cinemas and will be screening at Everyman Cinema in Chelmsford on Tuesday 31st August 6pm. The screening is followed by a live Q&A with writer and director Max Newsom, director of photography and producer Dankuro Shinma and producer Will Randall-Coath. The Q&A will be hosted by yours truly, Stewart Pink – so for a continuation of the interview… get your tickets and see you there!

We're cheating. All the geeks are busy - Ian has art deadlines, Hat and Liz are moving house, Matt's doing publishing stuff, Regie is up to his eyeballs in Thought Bubble and UCI preparations, Steve and Helen are doing the quiz thing, Jack is getting out and doing VoxPod and all the geeks on the rosta who have kids are dealing with the whole back to school thing. We're a bit cavalier with the podcast schedule, if we can't record, we can't record - you can do that when you're a podcast - but Radio waits for nobody, so since we can't get Geeks in a room this week (although Regie is working on something kinda cool - watch this space...) and our radio listeners haven't heard it, this is a re-edited episode of The Geeks at the Gates recorded in 2016 - back when "The Old Shop" was just "The Shop", before Destination Venus moved into the Everyman Cinema - although the move was imminent, and Helen refers to it. Matt, Hat, Helen and Regie met up to pick their top five Science Fiction spacecraft, and had a genuinely fun chat. Spoilers will follow for several science fiction properties...
