**Discussion begins at 4:15**We are drinking some high tea and going back to England to talk about Queen Elizabeth I... not to be confused with the queen that just passed away. RIP. We're talking about Queen Elizabeth today because... guys... she could have been a man. Queen Elizabeth I is the last of the Tudor monarchy in old England. She was the daughter of the infamous King Henry VIII, and lived from 1533-1603, when she died at age 69. She was known for being the Virgin Queen because she never took a husband, and pledged herself to the service of England. During her reign she restored England to the Protestant Church, she executed the Queen of the Scots, Mary Stuart, and led the country to defeat the Spanish Armada. But was Queen Elizabeth really the virgin queen? Was it her who actually reigned for 54 years, or was it an impostor put forth to continue the Tudor dynasty?Send us a textSupport the showTheme song by INDA
Born amid the turmoil of 16th century British society, Mary Queen of Scots was a leader trapped between Scotland and England, Catholic and Protestant ideologies, as well as love and duty. But she was also a woman with burning ambition, and her obsession with securing the English throne would define her life, and death. So, was Mary Stuart a plotter who would stop at nothing to realise her dreams? Or a wronged woman, manipulated by those around her? And did her dying father's prophecy about her role in Scotland's history prove correct? This is a Short History Of…Mary Queen of Scots. A Noiser Production, written by Jo Furniss. Our third Great Political Fiction is Friedrich Schiller's monumental play Mary Stuart (1800), which lays bare the impossible choices faced by two queens – Elizabeth I of England and Mary Queen of Scots – in a world of men. Schiller imagines a meeting between them that never took place and unpicks its fearsome consequences. Why does it do such damage to them both? How does the powerless Mary maintain her hold over the imperious Elizabeth? Who suffers most in the end and what is that suffering really worth?Find out more about Past Present Future on our new website www.ppfideas.com where you can also join PPF+ to get bonus episodes and ad-free listening. One of the most significant figures in 16th-century Britain was Mary Stuart, aka Mary, Queen of Scots. Mary's life was one of the most fascinating of the period. Depending on which historian you consult, she was a schemer, a traitor, a pawn, or a victim. According to some, she was all of these things. What is certain is that Mary was ultimately responsible for the union of the Scottish and British crowns and the creation of the United Kingdom that we know today. Recommendations: Ruth Homecoming: The Scottish Years of Mary, Queen of Scots - Rosemary Goring In this book, Rosemary Goring tells the story of Mary's Scottish years through the often dramatic and atmospheric locations and settings where the events that shaped her life took place and also examines the part Scotland, and its tumultuous court and culture, played in her downfall. Whether or not Mary Stuart emerges blameless or guilty, in this evocative retelling she can be seen for who she really was. https://www.waterstones.com/book/from-our-own-fire/william-letford/9781800173439 - William Letford This prose and poetry tour de force of storytelling has the narrative punch of a novel. It is a new departure for the poet, and for poetry itself. It takes the reader into the not-too-distant future: an artificial intelligence rules the world, and a working-class family use their wits to live off the land. We begin Episode 204 with the announcement of our second quarter readalong in our year of reading romance and end with a delightful conversation with author Allison Pataki about her fabulous new novel, FINDING MARGARET FULLER. Since our last episode, Emily has continued with her intention of reading a short story every Monday. She read “Lot” by Bryan Washington from the story collection LOT: Stories and “Postcards from Heaven” from REUNION BEACH: Stories Inspired by Dorothea Benton Frank. Chris also read a short story, “Consequences” by Willa Cather from the story collection UNCLE VALENTINE AND OTHER STORIES. We each read an excellent novel – we're talking Top 10 contenders! Emily read THE FROZEN RIVERr by Ariel Lawhon and Chris finished WE GOT THE BEAT by Jenna Miller. In Biblio Adventures, Chris has rekindled a childhood fascination with Mary Stuart (aka Mary I of Scotland or Mary, Queen of Scots). She watched two movies: Mary, Queen of Scots starring Vanessa Redgrave, and Mary Queen of Scots starring Saoirse Ronan based on John Guy's biography QUEEN OF SCOTS: The True Life of Mary Stuart. She plans to read Antonia Fraser's biography, Mary, Queen of Scots for Big Book Summer. Emily took a trip to Wilmington, NC where she tried unsuccessfully to shop at Papercuts Bookshop because it was closed for inventory. She did find two Little Free Libraries where she picked up THIRTEEN MOONS by Charles Frazier, INTIMACIES by Katie Kitamura, and EACH PEACH PEAR PLUM by Janet and Allan Ahlberg. Back in CT, Emily went to the North Haven public library where she purchased LOTt: Stories by Bryan Washington and WHO'S IRISH?: Stories by Gish Jen from the Friends of the Library sale, and attended a presentation with Linda Civitello author of BAKING POWDER WARS: The Cutthroat Food Fight That Revolutionized Cooking.

Continuing our read along of Phantom Blood we get our first appearance of the Yoda figure and Jobro Mr. Zepelli! A man who is willing to teach Jojo all the vegan chi powers he can muster (that's Hamon energy to Jojoites). Now a lot of sagely teacher characters can come off dull and boring but not in Jojo's world! We also talk about how brave characters can beget empathy from the reader and fact check the historical fantasy of the manga. Skip synopsis @ 6:47 Email: WeAppreciateManga@Gmail.com 105: Jojo's Bizarre Adventure vol. 3 Chapters 18 to 27, ‘Jack the Ripper and Zeppeli the Strange part 1' and ‘Tarkus and the Dark Knight Bruford part 2' By Hirohiko Araki Translation by Evan Galloway Lettering by Mark Mcmurray Our hero Jojo, having fought a vampire who killed his dad has recovered well from his injuries. It is at this time he meets a new mentor, the odd and mysterious Baron Will Anthonio Zeppeli or Mr. Zeppeli for short. He helps Jojo's arm heal faster with the use of Hamon, translated literally as ripple or wave energy. He teaches Jojo Sendo, the way of the hermit, a martial art that will allow him to harness the power of Hamon, in return he asks that Jojo helps him find and destroy the stone mask that birthed the vampire Dio. Since the once young Zeppeli himself had an unfortunate encounter with the stone mask. One of Dio's agents attacks Jojo during his training but it serves only as a demonstration of Jojo's power, soon Jojo, Zeppeli and Speedwagon track the follower of Dio to a tunnel where they are attacked by another servant of Dio, the infamous Jack the Ripper. During the fight Jack flees into the darkness of a hidden cavern, Zeppeli gives Jojo a glass of wine and tells him that if he is to train in future with him then he must defeat Jack on his own without spilling a single drop. Turns out the glass of wine acts as a conduit of Hamon and thus reacts to the presence of Jack, avoiding any surprises, Jojo uses the Hamon to blast jack to his demise, all thanks to Zeppeli's loaded weapon of a wine glass. Afterwards a boy steals the men's bags and lures them to a trap encounter with Dio amongst a sun set, having hypnotized the boy to do his bidding. Zeppeli makes his attack. Dio however has found a way to avoid Hamon strikes by using the laws of thermodynamics in conjunction with his vampire body. Heat is absorbed by Dio's body and in turn causing Hamon users to get frost bitten if they make physical contact with him. Dio summons two warriors from their graves to take his place in the fight with Jojo and the injured Zeppeli. These are Tarkus and the Dark Knight Bruford, former retainers to the deceased Queen of Scotland, Mary Stuart. Topics: · We have the first appearance of a Yoda figure, the “Jobro” Zeppeli, and we talk about what makes him such an entertaining teacher for our hero. · Author Hirohiko Araki demonstrates his ability to incite empathy through the bravery of his characters, in the next volume he'll go on to set up and pay off certain events by having characters become brave enough to face their fate. · The new Rohan Kishibe movie will be released on May 26, 2023 (James is mistaken to believe it is in March 2023) For those who do not know, Rohan Kishibe is a character who first appears in the fourth part of Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, ‘Diamond is Unbreakable'. The film itself ‘Rohan au Louvre' can be viewed as a sequel to the live action TV series (which is currently on its third season), this is also based of the manga spin off ‘Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan' which tells the story of manga artist Kishibe's travels as he satiates his voracious curiosity for a need to seek new inspiration, often encountering dangerous and supernatural threats. Other references: · Jack the ripper was a real and unidentified serial killer active in the London district of Whitechapel in 1888. The name comes from the historical letters claiming to be the killer. The events revolving around the Zodiac killer are similar to Jack the ripper in terms of the communication between the alleged killer and authorities, but it's also important to note that the Unabomber was caught because he published a manifesto which was key in his brother identifying him to the FBI. · The Highlander movie starring Sean Connery was released in the summer of 1986, since the Phantom Blood manga was first published in the winter of 1987 it is a fair assumption to say that Araki was inspired by the movie. · Unlike the manga, Mary, Queen of Scots has no blood relation to the Tudors, belonging from house Stewart of the Stewart dynasty. She was also in fact executed in 1587 at the age of 44, where as the manga shows her executed at the age of 23 in 1565. Her retainers in the manga are also fictitious. Her execution was a result of her complicity in treason against the Tudor queen, Elizabeth I. · Zeppeli's name is a reference to Led Zeppelin. A band whose contemporaries would have been the bands Deep Purple and Black Sabbath. English bands that were undoubtedly the progenitor for heavy rock and metal, and are historically significant because of it. · Dio's name is also a reference to ex-lead singer of Black Sabbath, whom recorded the ‘Heaven and Hell' album in 1980 after Ozzie Osbourne was fired, Ronnie James Dio, formed a band with the name of Dio in 1982, one of his most famous songs from that era being ‘Holy Diver'. He died in 2010. Facebook Instagram Twitter Official Website Email
Despite Walsingham's network of spies and back channels determined to expose Mary Stuart's information network, Mary's clandestine letters to Castelnau remained undiscovered for ten years. It was not until 1583 Walsingham managed to plant a mole in Castelnau's embassy in London. These letters have been presumed lost for the past 436 years until now. The world changed yesterday with the death of Queen Elizabeth II, whose subjects in the United Kingdom just this summer celebrated the 70th year of her reign. How do I, as a progressive (and non-British) person, neither a royalist nor an imperialist, commemorate her passing with the respect that she deserves? I found my answer, as I so often do in other of life's conundrums, in the artistry of Janet Baker, who celebrated her 89th birthday on 17 August, and who, in her day was often known as “the English Rose.” There is something about Baker's artistic personality: her nobility of utterance, her gravitas, her humanity, that made her a particularly striking interpreter of various queens in the operatic literature, from Alceste and Dido to Mary Stuart. And because, from the time of her Carnegie Hall debut in 1966 until her final appearance there in 1989, seven years after her official retirement from the operatic scene, she was a fixture of the New York concert scene, she also fits quite comfortably into the framework of this summer's celebration of musical life in New York between the years 1950 and 1975. Her towering operatic performances of roles by Gluck, Donizetti, Berlioz, and Purcell, are balanced with her profoundly moving performances of music by Bach, Gurney, and Schubert. Queen Elizabeth II is further memorialized by an excerpt from the world premiere performance of Benjamin Britten's Gloriana, composed for, and premiered six days after, her coronation in 1953. Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. The Man in the Iron Mask - Alexandre Dumas - Book 6, Part 9 Title: The Man in the Iron Mask Overview: The d'Artagnan Romances are a set of three novels by Alexandre Dumas (1802–1870), telling the story of the 17th-century musketeer d'Artagnan. Dumas based the character and attributes of d'Artagnan on the captain of musketeers Charles de Batz-Castelmore d'Artagnan (c. 1611–1673) and the portrayal was particularly indebted to d'Artagnan's semi-fictionalized memoirs as written 27 years after the hero's death by Gatien de Courtilz de Sandras (published 1700). The Vicomte of Bragelonne: Ten Years Later (French: Le Vicomte de Bragelonne ou Dix ans plus tard) is the third and last of The d'Artagnan Romances, following The Three Musketeers and Twenty Years After. It appeared first in serial form between 1847 and 1850. In the English translations, the 268 chapters of this large volume are usually subdivided into three, but sometimes four or even six individual books. In three-volume English editions, the volumes are entitled The Vicomte de Bragelonne, Louise de la Vallière, and The Man in the Iron Mask. Each volume is roughly the length of the original The Three Musketeers (1844). Set in the 1660s and concerned with the early reign of Louis XIV, the novel has been called an "origins" story of the King, "a tale about the education of a young man who went on to rule for over 70 years and become one of France's most beloved monarchs." Naturally, in a novel about Dumas' musketeers, the characters play an important role in Louis' education. The story of d'Artagnan is completed in Louise de la Vallière in the last of the Musketeer novels and the penultimate book in the set of d'Artagnan Romances novels. The Man in the Iron Mask - Alexandre Dumas - Book 6, Part 6 Title: The Man in the Iron Mask Overview: The d'Artagnan Romances are a set of three novels by Alexandre Dumas (1802–1870), telling the story of the 17th-century musketeer d'Artagnan.
