SMACtalk launched December 18th, 2014 as an anti-niche video podcast show where hosts Brian Fanzo & Daniel Newman shared their thoughts and interviewed experts on the massive technology trends: Social Media, Mobility, Analytics and Cloud computing. Fast-forward to Jan 2018 for episode 100 and so much has changed around the platforms the hosts have used to push the podcast live not to mention the interviewing skills of the host while other things have stayed the same since the start. On this episode Brian and Daniel take a look back at the early days of the podcast and discuss some of the behind the scenes stories that happened when broadcasting this show live at Mobile World Congress Barcelona or the 20 hours of SMACtalk from the Superbowl. They also discuss the impact S.M.A.C. technologies have had on new mega trends like artificial intelligence, blockchain, internet of things and wearables. What role will transparency and authenticity play in our digital future? The C-suite has lost its way when it comes to testing out new technology and selecting the right software and tools for the business. As we moved from on-premise/installed software to cloud computing we also moved from testing and setting up “bake-offs” for analyze tools to a cloud computing model that often time involves the executive reading about a new tool in a Forbes blog post and buying it with the company credit card and telling the employees to use it. We must change how we test and analyze tools and include the technology users and tech savvy employees in our company in our boardroom decision making process for selecting tools and technology in 2017. We’re in the midst of digital content overload as we have more channels and types of content to consume than ever before. I’m asked almost weekly by brands and entrepreneurs which should they create, a video blog or podcast. This question is an interesting one as I’ve been a podcast host for 4 years and currently host two podcasts while also being an evangelist for live video creating over 1800 live streams in the last 2 years. You could say I’m stuck in the middle as the recording of this podcast is also live streamed on Facebook Live and Periscope before being stripped from the video and uploaded as a podcast. To answer this question I took to the app Anchor.FM which recently added a new feature allowing it’s users to upload episodes they create on Anchor to a podcast available in Apple Podcasts and Google Play with the push of one button. This feature is exciting as creating podcasts has always been a painful process especially for those that aren’t technology savvy. Beyond being able to push one button and upload a podcast, the idea of including listeners soundbites, what Anchor calls “Call-ins”, makes Anchor the best option for creating what I call participatory content. Sometimes I just have to pinch myself when it comes to the events, people and experiences I get access too on a daily basis. How do I make sure the right audience is reading my content? How do I make sure my customers see what I’m posting on social media? Let's face it it's about time we started holding marketing agencies, marketing leaders, and marketing projects to some kind of benchmark. When I'm asked my thoughts on the future of marketing or what I think about the current state of social media marketing and what's happening with the future of TV advertising I often remind people that for the last 7 to 9 years this industry has been flying by the seat of their pants. Now "winging it" is something I take great pride add and something I think I'm very good at but the deeper I got into marketing the more I understood where the business value is with things like social media contents public relations SEO the more I realized that the tools technology and customer data limited what could actually be done. I believe 2017 will be the year we look back on as the true start of transformation within the marketing industry as a whole. with new technologies such as artificial intelligence, cognitive computing machine learning teamed up with marketing automation dynamic advertising and account-based Marketing Solutions we can now truly measure, scale and understand our clients and our customers like we've always dreamed of. This first episode in June 2017 I want to share my thoughts on where the CMO duties will make changes in the future, the role digital transformation will play and how we teach and hire employees. Ultimately I believe the agencies, marketers and thought leaders that have sold rainbows and unicorns, faking it till they make it. Since being diagnosed ADHD at 31 years old I've made it my mission to be transparent and upfront about the impact of being diagnosed has had on me personally as a Dad and my entrepreneurship journey. I firmly believe that as we become more transparent as a digital culture the value of owning our own individual vulnerabilities will be directly linked to our individual success as well as our relatability to the community. I've always enjoyed being the champion of the outcasts, tapping into my ability to debunk myths and disrupt the status quo by allowing people to stereotype or have a preconceived notion of who we are or what we’re about only to prove they couldn't have been more wrong. During my BeYourself keynote I share that I was diagnosed ADHD and currently take adderall I usually get 1 of 3 responses: WOW, I can’t believe he just shared that so openly with the world! Yeah I think everyone has a little bit of ADHD especially entrepreneurs That makes sense Brian has all the signs of someone with ADHD. Interestingly enough being diagnosed with ADHD at 31 years old had a massive impact on me and it isn’t for the reasons you might think. I believe what ADHD taught me is what all leaders who have found success discover at some point in their career. Riches are in the niches! For everyone with a niche this was always music to their ears but for those that grew up like me and were passionate about multiple things and could never answer the question “What do you want to do when you grow up” it made us cringe. On this episode I discuss the value of being a generalist or what I like to say “a swiss-army knife of skillsets” in this world of digital change. I also ask these questions for us to ponder change and the future of work: Are we raising kids to picture one future when that picture we all know will always change? Asking what do you want to be when you grow up, encourages kids to believe they’ve failed when they change what they want to be. If you are getting rich with a niche, are you afraid the robots will take your job? How to prepare for that.
