An award winning independent music artist, singer, songwriter, multi instrumentalist, music producer and videographer, this London based creative grew up in Nottingham UK. Self taught on piano and guitar, he was to discover a love for fully crafting his own material from conception to production and everything in between. Solidifying his skills at Paul McCartney's Performing Arts Institute LIPA in Liverpool, saw him write two musicals and record his first solo album before arriving in London to pursue long held musical dreams. As an ever evolving queer artist with inspirational pop icons surcharging his self expression, the big city in the early naughties proved a resistant force in his honest lyrics and themes gaining any commercial appeal. And so, shunning the corporate cats with a firm belief that art comes from a place of truth, he did it his way, retaining creative control by launching his own record label - Young Lust Records, learning the music biz from the ground up. Having carved a niche with his own brand of queer themed rock music and videos, exciting collaborations and projects soon followed, along with a strong online audience and international fan base garnering millions of YouTube views and viral videos, capturing the supportive eye of much loved English actor, broadcaster, writer, comedian and director Stephen Fry. Combining elements of rock, punk, alternative, pop and visual storytelling with a theatrical flair, his songs are candid in dealing with the joys, pains and experiences of gay identity. As an LGBTQ+ advocate and activist his expressions are unashamedly positive and celebratory with humorous yet acerbic commentary on institutional homophobia within the entertainment industry. Quirky, heart-warming and political. Fifteen years and four studio albums deep, his work has involved an international roster of film directors, illustrators and visual artists to bring his stories to life with an award winning debut album Not Thinking Straight and follow up Cover Boy co-produced with Mark Crew of Bastille and Rag n Bone Man credits, and has had his work featured in Gay Times, Attitude and Out Magazines. Alongside further nods from actor Tom Hiddleston, LGBtQ+ activist Peter Tatchell & legendary songwriter and producer Jim Steinman. With his latest album Tales of Queer Suburbia set for release in early 2025, this is someone making waves in the wonderful world of queer.

My guest today is Alice Bramhill, a psychotherapist from Nottingham in the UK, who lives with her husband and two sons who are ten and 13. They went to mainstream school until six years ago, then after trying a Steiner school for six months, finally left the school system altogether. We talk today about how unravelling our own stories is an essential part in all of this. And, about how, if we want our children to be free to live into their whole selves, then we have to allow them to have agency, which means learning to trust them and to trust ourselves. I hope you enjoy the conversation. Hold onto your bubbles LOAer's, do we ever have an incredible episode for you all! Holli and Jeanna introduce you to their newest dear friend from across the pond (yep, Great Britain!) Nicholas Haines. This episode is jam packed with teaching, inspiration, and such generosity of spirit that we are sure you will enjoy the conversation (hopefully as much as the LOA gals did!) and learn what we all have to look forward to in this new Chinese Lunar Year of the Water Tiger (began on 2/1/2022). More about Nicholas: Nick is an entrepreneur, international speaker, strategist, author and teacher in Chinese Energetics. He has spent all his adult life practically applying the wisdom of Chinese philosophy within health, personal development, business, leadership, relationships and international change. Nicholas has always considered physical, mental and spiritual health and wellbeing as a cornerstone of personal and international change. As such he has spent 35 years on the frontline as a Practitioner of Traditional Chinese Medicine and running a busy Complementary Health Centre in Nottingham (UK) before retiring in 2015. Over that time Nick conducted over 50,000 one on one consultations. And as testimony to his commitment and expertise, for the majority of that time he had a waiting list of at least six months to see him as a new client, stretching at some points to an incredible 2-year wait. If you aren't listening while driving, running, walking or anything that will challenge note-taking - you may want to grab your favorite journal and pen and take notes. Nicholas shares so many great words of wisdom and information we know it will be helpful to jot down some things that speak to you! In this episode of AfriCan Geopardy, we discussed religion and development in Africa. Religion and development are often intimately interwoven for good or ill in Africa and elsewhere. For instance, religious organisations play a significant role in poverty alleviation, health care and peace and reconciliation programmes. At the same time, select religious organisations were used as a tool for colonialism. Hence, we have chosen this topic to clarify the intersection between religion and development. To discuss this topic, we had a befitting guest who is an expert on the subject. Dr Aikande Clement Kwayu is a social scientist with experience in both academia and practice. She consults on management, political economy analysis, policy analysis and evaluation of development projects. Dr Aikande has a PhD in Politics and International Relations from the University of Nottingham (UK). Her book, Religion and British International Development Policy | Aikande Clement Kwayu | Palgrave Macmillan, published in 2020, is a must-read.

Interview with Nicholas Haines the author of the book: The Art of Kind and Flowing Relationships and co-author of the book The Story of Boxes, The Good, The Bad and The Ugly - not to mention the co-creator of the #NoMoreBoxes Movement, Methodology and Lifestyle.Give you little insights around this magical and a very dear friend of mine.Nicholas Haines, or Nick as I call him, is the creator of The Vitality Test and Co-founder of the Five Institute.Nick is an entrepreneur, international speaker, strategist, author and teacher in Chinese Energetics. He has spent all his adult life practically applying the wisdom of Chinese philosophy within health, personal development, business, leadership, relationships and international change.Nicholas has always considered physical, mental and spiritual health and wellbeing as a cornerstone of personal and international change. As such he has spent 35 years on the frontline as a Practitioner of Traditional Chinese Medicine and running a busy Complementary Health Centre in Nottingham (UK) before retiring in 2015. Over that time Nick conducted over 50,000 one on one consultations. And as a testimony to his commitment and expertise, for the majority of that time, he had a waiting list of at least six months to see him as a new client, stretching at some points to a ridiculous 2-year wait.Nick and I have had countless conversations around the consequences of putting ourselves and others into endless boxes. How that stops our energy to flow effortlessly. It creates stuckness and stagnation and prevents us from being the highest version of who we were born to be.In one of our first conversations around this topic, I was a bit devastated. I had noticed people kept telling me to step-into-my feminine energy, and quite frankly although I didn't feel they meant anything harmful by saying this to me, I could not stop noticing how their suggestions made my skin crawl.Talking with Nick on this subject, he calmed me down when he said: “There isn't any energy that is feminine, nor is there an energy that is masculine - it's just energy.” Nick just published his brand new book: The Art of Kind and Flowing Relationships, and I had to get him to share his wisdom around relationships, masculine and feminine energies and what is really stopping us from being our best - or our highest version. Some great takeaways from Nick:Be in bliss and exude peace Look into the other side of things Expand and dive into the abyss We are being conditioned, your gender, education, religion isn't who you truly are.The desire to feel good is universal______________________________________The Change Makers are doing a fundraiser for their #NoMoreBoxes Online Training and Collaboratory Center. It’s our Box Camera Appreciation episode! And wow do we have some box camera appreciation for you!First Eric and Vania tell everyone what they’ve been up to. Eric’s been wrestling with the 120 back for the Polaroid Automatic Land Cameras, while Vania’s been shooting in the water, getting older (but not old) and mentions a few new books. Now delving into box cameras, we asked listeners to call in and let us know which ones they’ve recommend for friends. We got answers and Eric has shot most of them. Who knew? After the messages, Vania and Eric gave their own recommendations. After a bit of discussion, we give a call to Jennifer Froula Weber (@jenniferfroulaweber on Instagram). We’ve talked with her before about her tintypes, but now we’re talking box cameras (and tin types – you’ll see). She and we talk which boxes she likes best, why she shoots T-grain film in them, and why she’ll often choose them over her Hasselblad. After the interview, we deep dive into a short history of the box camera. We begin by trying to figure out just what is a box camera, but quickly move on to the 1870s and the very first of these simple little cameras. From there, we talk George Eastman’s early attempts at boxes, as well as the Boston Bulls Eye. It finally came together for Kodak when Frank Brownwell came up with his Brownie… and the many, many more that followed. We also explored the many competitors to Kodak’s offerings, as well as how the designs changed from simple boxes to rocket ship dreams in colors of teal, mint and red. While Vania talked about her new zine in the last episode, Eric talks his new issue in this. It’s Conspiracy of Cartographers Issue Seven, and it was all shot on the Imperial Savoy – a plastic 60s box camera. We continue the zine talk with the second installment of our how-to-zine segment. Here, we discuss sequencing the photos, as well as layout and computer programs. The third and final will come next! And speaking of zines, on this episode we also review Michael Tekel’s In Silvam Sciryuda. “When I moved to Nottingham UK, I didn’t know many places around here. Except for legendary Sherwood Forest. I wanted to see it. I went, I saw and I was not impressed at first. That’s how this zine project started – with the goal to capture the true soul of this place”.And that about does it for the episode! Happy listening!

The C-suite has lost its way when it comes to testing out new technology and selecting the right software and tools for the business. As we moved from on-premise/installed software to cloud computing we also moved from testing and setting up “bake-offs” for analyze tools to a cloud computing model that often time involves the executive reading about a new tool in a Forbes blog post and buying it with the company credit card and telling the employees to use it. We must change how we test and analyze tools and include the technology users and tech savvy employees in our company in our boardroom decision making process for selecting tools and technology in 2017. Why does this matter when we move to artificial intelligence, internet of things, augmented reality, virtual reality and more…. You’ll have to listen to find out! Roger Kerry (University of Nottingham UK - https://rogerkerry.wordpress.com/) talks to Rachael Lowe from Physiopedia discussing the importance of clinical reasoning and the Cervical Arterial Dysfunction (CAD) framework. As part of Feb 2014’s monthly learn topic on the cervical spine we were extremely fortunate to be able to record a 30 minute interview with Roger Kerry, Associate Professor at University of Nottingham, about his work and thinking on clinical decision making and the Cervical Arterial Dysfunction (CAD) assessment model. Here we provide a 10 minute section of this interview where Roger describes this very important framework and contrasts it against vertebrobasilar ischaemia (VBI) testing used prior to cervical manipulation.
Historic titles and historic rights have been a complicated issue in the law of the sea both conceptually and practically. The contemporary relevance of historic titles and historic rights in the law of the sea has been questioned following the adoption of the Law of the Sea Convention (LOSC), the endorsement of a significant expansion of the jurisdiction of coastal states, and the consolidation of the jurisdictional regime of maritime zones. Historic titles and historic rights have been a complicated issue in the law of the sea both conceptually and practically. These concepts have attracted attention in academic literature mainly in papers discussing the validity of specific claims, and more recently concerning China’s historic claim in the South China Sea. Historic claims have not been addressed comprehensively by international courts and tribunals. They have been invoked by litigants within the framework of maritime delimitation, and courts and tribunals have examined their validity and relevance to the maritime boundary. A number of issues remain uncertain: the definition and scope of historic waters, titles and rights, the contemporary relevance of such claims in the light of the Law of the Sea Convention, and the conditions and requirements for their establishment. The South China Sea arbitration between the Philippines and China raised important issues regarding the contemporary relevance and validity of historic claims, and the Tribunal made some interesting pronouncements with respect to a crucial aspect concerning the relationship between the Law of the Sea Convention and historic rights. This is the first time that a Tribunal contributes with such clarity to the issue of historic rights. This talk will examine historic rights and historic titles in the law of the sea in the light of the South China Sea arbitration and evaluate the contribution of the awards to the clarification of these concepts. It will assess the approach of the Tribunal concerning the relationship between the Law of the Sea Convention and historic claims in general, and then identify certain types of historic rights and evaluate their contemporary relevance with reference to the jurisprudence of international courts and tribunals. It will further examine the requirements for the establishment of historic rights with a focus on China’s historic claim as discussed by the Tribunal, and finally assess the scope and content of the optional exception to compulsory jurisdiction in article 298 (1) (a) (i) LOSC regarding disputes involving historic titles and the decision of the Tribunal on jurisdiction. Short bio Dr Sophia Kopela is a lecturer in law at Lancaster University Law School. She holds an LLB from the University of Athens (Greece), an LLM in Public International Law from the University of Nottingham (UK) and a PhD in International Law of the Sea from Bristol University (UK). Her specialisation lies in law of the sea, international environmental law and public international law, and she has published articles in international journals and presented papers in international conferences in these fields. Her article ‘2007 Archipelagic Legislation of the Dominican Republic: An Assessment’ was awarded the Gerard Mangone Prize for the best article in the International Journal of Marine and Coastal Law in 2009. She is the author of a monograph titled ‘Dependent archipelagos in the law of the sea’ published by Martinus Nijhoff/BRILL in 2013. She is also the book review editor of the International Journal of Marine and Coastal Law.
Dr Kieran O’Sullivan, PT, PhD, was one of the first podcast guests to crack 9,000 listens! From the University of Limerick, Ireland, he has vast clinical experience and he completed a PhD on the role of sitting in back pain. In this 18-minute podcast he reviews his 2015 podcast in the first 3 minutes and then rattles off at least 7 practical tips. Kieran was a guest of PhysioFirst (UK) when BJSM interviewed him in April 2015. The 2017 PhysioFirst conference is on April 1-2 (2017!) in Nottingham (UK) and guest speakers include Professor Paul Hodges, Dr Tania Pizzari and Dr Igor Tak. Timeline: 1.00 m Back pain is neither explained by what patients and clinicians see on scans nor just by load 2.00 m When treating, you need to assess the various factors that could be playing a role, such as load, posture, stress, and address the right one. 4.00 m Should we try to prevent all back pain? Listen to Dr O’Sullivan challenge the belief that it’s important to never have back pain. He likens back pain to conditions like sadness, constipation – not great but not a major problem as long as it doesn’t persist. Athletes need to load their bodies and adapt rather than avoid load and become vulnerable (See Gabbett papers and podcast, below). Don’t pass on fear (of back pain coming on or persisting) to athletes. 5.00 m Screen for red flags of course, if the clinical picture warrants it – but most long-term back pain is NOT due to something listed as a red flag. 6.00 m Reassurance – being empathetic without inducing fear. 7.00 m Think through. What precipitated the pain? Too much load, too much stress, bad posture, movement patterns? If unknown, have patient create a pain diary. Look for trends. Examine all the dimensions of the biopsychosocial model. 9:00 m Don’t just make the diagnosis but be practical. Patient sad? Don’t just say ‘You are sad, your back pain will go away’. Provide specific treatment for the specific threat. 10:00 m Empower the patient to choose the exercises he or she wants and what he or she will do! Exercise has benefits across systems. 11:00 m Don’t give up. Here Kieran walks us through a challenging real life case. A simple tissue diagnosis would not have helped this person at the centre of the case 12:00 m Explain! Explain the pain! (HT to Professor Lorimer Moseley and Dr David Butler). 13:00 m The period at 4-6 weeks of pain can be difficult – patient has not adapted to the contemporary model and may still be on waiting list for imaging. 14:00 m What is the evidence for this approach? How does the evidence compare, with, for example Hamstring injuries? Danz Spas are a pure-play online retail business that sell affordable, high quality hot tubs and spas online to the UK and EU market. Founded in 2006 by Daniel Thomas, it is now a £1 million ($1.7 million) plus business based in Nottingham (UK). What caught my attention and triggered this interview, was a BBC article titled 'The value of celebrity endorsements' - that revealed pop star, Sophie Ellis-Bextor endorses Danz Spas. Danz Spa also boasts of having other UK celebrity customers like: John Barnes (UK footballer), John Newman (pop-star), Sophie Ellis-Bextor and soon to be Alexandra Burke (pop star). It was the second time I had read about Danz Spas in the mainstream press and I really wanted to dig into the workings of their PR strategy as well as the impact of a high powered celebrity endorsement on their eCommerce sales. Daniel is by all measures a gentleman with a lot of hustle. He was very well prepared for this interview and shared a lot of figures about his business as well as the Spa industry in general. http://2xmedia.co/podcast/ep05/
This week's episode marks the third time that the "Hoser Heavy Metal Twins" have taken the reigns of the Decibel Geek Podcast. Once again Wally "Wallygator" Norton and Rich "The Meister" Dillon are back with a new batch of Canadian homegrown hard rock and heavy metal. Joining the Decibel Geek website writers turned hosts are two very special guests guitarist Greg Fraser and bassist Stevie Skreebs from Canadian bands Brighton Rock and Fraze Gang. "Roadtrip!" was called, as the Decibel Geek podcast headed out to Niagara Falls Canada to the home of bassist Stevie Skreebs. Equipped with some Iron Maiden Trooper beer, we set up shop in the very basement where Brighton Rock often rehearse and where Fraze Gang came to life. For the next hour the guys enjoyed some laughs, some beers and most importantly some great Canadian music. Also touched on throughout the show, the formation of Brighton Rock, playing a historic show with Triumph, how they came to be part of Mitch Lafon's KISS tribute album, their interpretation of "Creatures of the Night" and more. They also chime in on Gene Simmon's "rock is dead" quote and of course they discussed the progress on the upcoming and eagerly anticipated new Brighton Rock record that is in the works. The Decibel Geeks can tell you.....it's gonna be fantastic! Wally's Story... Greg rocking the Hammer 1989 I have written about growing up a Canadian metal fan in the 80's many times now. We didn't get MTV north of the border, instead we got the Canadian version called Much Music. Much played all the big rock videos of the day. Crue, Def Leppard and Whitesnake were there, of course, but right along with them were plenty of great Canadian rock, Coney Hatch, the KiLLeR DWaRfS and Brighton Rock among the best. They were every bit the "rock gods" that Sixx, Elliot and Coverdale were. Of course they were, they were all over our televisions and radio airwaves. It almost seems strange to me that these great Canadian bands were not necessarily getting the same exposure south of the border. Brighton Rock in the 80's burned quite a trail, released three incredible albums produced by Michael Wagener, Jack Richardson and Toby Wright respectively. They earned Gold records, won Juno awards and toured the country relentlessly. Over the years I was privileged enough to catch Brighton Rock live probably a dozen or more times. From various clubs in Hamilton (Dallas, Bannisters, etc.), my college pub on frosh week, opening for Honeymoon Suite at COPPS Coliseum and opening for Triumph at Canada's Wonderland. Stevie's Peavey! If you had told the 18 year old me that I would be invited to sit around and chat with Greg and Stevie, at Stevie's house no less, I might have actually peed myself. Fortunately as a mature adult now (shut up Rich!), I was able to contain my bladder and enjoy the experience. After the recording, the conversation continued on and as hinted on the show we got a sneak peak at one of the new songs slated for the new Brighton Rock record. A thick heavy riff sets off a great new tune that I can't wait to add to my music collection, hurry up fellas! Stevie even let me tinker with his bass as I suddenly went fanboy and almost did a Wayne's World "We're not worthy!" You can see how miserable I am in the photo. Being able to share some Brighton Rock and Fraze Gang music has been a blast! I want to thank Stevie and Greg for being a part of the show, sharing some of your musical picks and for sharing some of the great memories with the Decibel Geek listeners. Rich "The Meister"'s Story: Thanksgiving is upon us once again and it's time for Chris and Aaron's yearly week off. These two faithfully deliver an inciteful, humorous, and entertaining podcast each and every week, never having missed one for a total of 162 episodes! In what has become a yearly tradition in itself, The Hoser Heavy Metal Twins, Canadians Wally "Wallygator" Norton and Rich "The Meister" Dillon are back for a third year of stepping in to bring you this week's episode. I wanted to do something different for our third year attempting to remotely fill the big shoes of the regular Decibel Geek hosts and basically give the faithful listeners something better than just the two of us "Hosers". I didn't know quite what, but almost immediately after I expressed this sentiment to Wally he returned with the suggestion that soon became a reality. Joining the Decibel Geek website writers turned hosts for this The Meister mauled by Brighton Rock! episode are two very special guests, guitarist Greg Fraser and bassist Stevie Skreebs from the Canadian bands Brighton Rock and Fraze Gang. Personally, I almost feel deprived at times, especially when reading Wally's story above, in that although I was a long time listener my first concert experience with Brighton Rock was the October 2012 show at The Rockpile in Toronto. Wally and I got the opportunity to sit down with frontman Gerry McGhee before the event for an in depth interview. The boys had set the gig as a warm up for their planned appearance at that year's Firefest Festival in Nottingham UK and what a show it was. It was thrilling to finally get to see these guys live and I don't know what they were like then, but I think I can safely say they're stronger than ever. Over the next couple of years I would often speak to Greg via the internet and even run into him at various shows held at The Rockpile venues, to the point where a friendship has formed. Even with this it was still exciting to sit down and talk with the boys in this revered space. As Wally eluded to the fact that 18 year old him may have wet himself, 41 year old me was near that (well I did drink a fair amount of Skreebs' beer!). With the traditional "Keep it Canadian" theme, the four play some great Canadian music, some Brighton Rock/Fraze Gang, chat about bands, music, concert memories and of course drink some beer. Hopefully you find it as interesting to listen to as we did fun in recording it. Cheers, The Meister (The Meister on Facebook) (Meister on Twitter) Buy Music! (click artist name to purchase!) The Helico Eradication Aspirin Trial (HEAT) is an intervention trial that aims to reduce gastro and intestinal bleeding with aspirin. It's a widely held belief that aspirin can cause ulcers, but this only occurs in high doses. Prof Hawkey explains that ulcers are caused by other factors and aspirin increases the risk of bleeding in these cases. The HEAT trial examines helicobacter pylori, which is believed to cause bleeding peptic ulcers. In the pilot study there were 2,500 patients over a six-month period identified through general practice records and it was discovered that the ulcers are eliminated by curing the helicobacter pylori infection. In addition, the trial potentially discovered that aspirin increases the antibiotic effects of eliminating this infection.

Well, its a been a few month since our last Podcast, but we are back with another exclusive mix from our 5th Birthday guests, Inland Knights. Dj’s, Producers and label owners, Andy Riley and Laurence Ritchie AKA Inland Knights hail from Nottingham UK, a city with a rich musical legacy, particularly for house music. They met in ’93 and cut their teeth DJ’ing for Smokescreen, the renegade soundsystem from which they drew their early inspiration. Smokescreen consisted of dj’s, lighting people, sound people, a truck, a P.A, a generator and general helpers. Old warehouses, woodland, fields, quarries and houses were utilised with the sole intention of having a good time…. for free! By the mid 90’s smokescreen could guarantee a crowd of hundreds in attendance at their parties, and their club nights became local institutions that ran for years with packed dancefloors, and still do to this day!. By ’98 Laurence and Andy had made the inevitable step into production and the same year the Dropmusic label was born with the release of ‘Inland Knights vol 1’. As Inland Knights Riley and Ritchie undertook a busy schedule in the studio to write tracks for Drop (almost all of the early output was entirely Inland knights, despite many monikers). Dropmusic has gone on to become one of the most highly regarded house labels in recent years(with 60 plus releases to date), and Inland knights have gone on to become one of the most respected production outfits in the house world, regularly taking on remix duties for fellow labels and producers. Highlights include the accliamed ‘Mohammed Ali’ remix for Faithless on Cheeky Records, cd compilations and remixes for NRK and Om Records, Inland Knights first full length album entitled ‘Creative Spaces’, and more recently Inland Knights album to mark 10 years of Dropmusic entitled ‘Dust till Dawn’. Currently, as well as remix and production commitments, the pair maintain a busy international Dj ‘ing shedule, and can be found most weekends playing somewhere in the UK or Europe, as well as regular visits to the U.S, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. Andy also records under the Toka Project pseudonym, and Laurence under the alias Larry Fives. Catch Inland Knights at ......... On Tuesday May 27, the Western Shugden Society arranged two protests in the English city of Nottingham. As people gathered to listen to the Dalai Lama at the Ice Arena in the morning, they were greeted by a vociferous picket of monks, nuns, and lay Buddhists from over 30 countries representing thousands of Western Shugden Society members around the world. They were protesting the discrimination and harm caused by the Dalai Lama's ban to the practice of Wisdom Buddha Dorje Shugden.
