The Liberation of Letting Go: Finding Joy in What You Choose to Miss Have you ever felt that nagging anxiety when you miss a social gathering, decline an invitation, or don't immediately respond to a text? That feeling has a name—FOMO (Fear of Missing Out)—and it might be silently sabotaging your recovery journey. In this enlightening episode of The Addicted Mind Plus, hosts Duane and Eric Osterlind explore a powerful mindset shift from FOMO to JOMO (Joy of Missing Out). They reveal how the constant pressure to be everywhere and do everything can lead to overwhelm, anxiety, and disconnection from our true values. The hosts share how social media intensifies this fear by showing everyone's highlight reels, making us feel like we're falling behind or missing crucial experiences. This comparison trap hits especially hard during recovery, whispering lies that rest equals laziness or declining invitations means losing connection. But there's hope in embracing JOMO—the conscious choice to find peace in saying no and truly meaning it. Unlike FOMO, which research links to lower life satisfaction and poor self-esteem, JOMO helps build emotional resilience and alignment with personal values. Through six practical steps, Duane and Eric guide listeners on how to recognize FOMO's presence, identify what they're truly afraid of missing, and shift perspective to see what they gain by setting boundaries. This isn't about avoidance—it's about intention and making choices from clarity rather than fear. The hosts emphasize that recovery doesn't mean you're behind; you're exactly where you need to be. Sometimes the most powerful action is choosing peace over pressure and stillness over striving. JOMO isn't disconnection—it's reconnection to yourself, your needs, and what truly matters. For those ready to practice this transformative skill, the episode points to a downloadable worksheet and invites listeners to join The Addicted Mind community for deeper support. Because recovery isn't something you have to face alone—and sometimes, the quiet joy of letting go is exactly what your healing journey needs. In this episode of thinkfuture, Chris broadcasts from the heart of Evia, Greece, and dives into the concept of JOMO—Joy of Missing Out—as a counter to the pervasive fear of missing out (FOMO) that has gripped modern society. Surrounded by the birthplace of democracy and drama, Chris reflects on how our constant connection to devices and social media feeds has fueled a state of anxiety and dependence, leading many to feel uneasy when they are disconnected from the digital world. He shares his personal experience of arriving in Greece and intentionally disconnecting from his devices, which initially felt unsettling. However, as he spent more time immersed in the natural world and engaged in real-life experiences, Chris found a sense of peace that had been elusive amidst the constant noise of social media. This shift from FOMO to JOMO highlighted the importance of stepping away from technology and reconnecting with the world around us. Chris encourages listeners to put down their phones, step away from screens, and experience life beyond the digital realm. He emphasizes that while technology has its benefits, it often dehumanizes us by pulling us away from genuine human experiences and connections. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thinkfuture/support

We all know about FOMO, or the Fear Of Missing Out. We're scrolling through our social media feeds, and there it is: post after post of a friend who's somewhere exotic, having a great time, or at an exciting new job… and we're not. We can't help but compare our lives with people who seem to be doing so much more. The result can be an uptick in anxiousness, distress, grinding to “keep up” and sometimes FOMO can even stop us from taking action…that feeling of being overwhelmed. FOMO – the acronym and the idea – really struck a nerve in the social media age. Not only is it now in the Merriam Webster dictionary, but it's spawned a whole slew of related acronyms: FOBO (Fear of Better Options), JOMO (Joy of Missing Out) and even inspired me to coin the term FOPO, the Fear Of People's Opinions.Today on the podcast is writer and entrepreneur Patrick McGinnis, who invented the term FOMO back in the early 2000s. He did it flippantly, but then the idea took off, and he's been owning it and studying it ever since.Patrick has come up with a way of looking at our fear of missing out, how to train ourselves to work with it, and even use it – in positive ways – to really go after the things we want and elevate our lives. It's a fascinating story, a unique perspective on modern culture, and a great way of using this “negative” idea and turning it into a tool for better living. In the spirit of FOMO... you DO NOT want to miss this one :)With Fire,MG-----WATCH this episode on our YouTube channel.Connect with us on our Instagram.Order my book, "The First Rule of Mastery" HERE!For more information and shownotes from every episode, head to findingmastery.com.To check out our exclusive sponsor deals and discounts CLICK HERESee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

It's easy to overlook the power of listening to and reflecting on the pulse of the team, encouraging genuine connection and understanding. Before moving ahead towards our goals, why not take a moment to take a pulse of the collective team energy, ensuring alignment and fostering a more empathetic environment? As the Director of Engineering at Hotjar, Clint Calleja leads the engineering teams for the core features tribes, overseeing the development and delivery of web applications that help over 900,000 websites in 180+ countries understand and improve their user experience. With more than 16 years of experience, he has a proven track record of aligning, inspiring, and enabling others to succeed through communication, coaching, mentoring, and empowerment. He uses a people-first, servant leadership approach and a data-driven, outcome-oriented mindset to guide teams and the organization towards achieving their goals and vision. His mission is to leverage his expertise in web applications, software development, and engineering leadership to create value for Hotjar's customers, employees, and shareholders. In this episode, Clint shares how embracing vulnerability isn't a weakness; it's a strength that deepens bonds and accelerates progress. Working for a remote and fully distributed company, he explains the challenges of written communication and how he listens and aligns understanding. He also shares practical tools he uses to listen to the pulse of his teams that might surprise you. Enjoy this very insightful and practical episode of the listening SUPERPOWER podcast. “By slowing down, digesting communication, and leading with authenticity, we not only achieve lasting results but also cultivate a more humane and fulfilling experience for all involved."- Clint Calleja SUPERPOWER Notes: 00:38 - The moment he first noticed the power of listening: When someone was seeing me as a human being, being part of a team of people rather than just an employee. 02:47 - Important perspective on this idea of 'bringing your whole self to work' 05:02 - His approach to leading a team: I listen and I try to navigate between how many solutions I try to provide versus how much coaching and questioning and just nudging. 08:18 - Start the day with a simple pulse: We need to start with setting our self expectations. 14:07 - It's okay to be vulnerable: The best way I can do that is to be transparent. 14:59 - What his younger self needs to know early on as he looks back in hindsight 15:53 - A coaching approach he uses to manage multiple teams: I'm going to make myself available, I'll be able to listen, and I'll be able to work with the individual. 20:45 - Tools he uses that supports listening even with people working remotely: What I found really helpful is journaling. 27:46 - How he organizes the observations he gathers from listening: It has to be quick; it's a simple checklist for tasks and a checklist for observations. 33:11 - Perspective on how to approach feedback: It is a mindset change. 35:51 - Examples of how he executes his feedback process 39:01 - Advice to young generation leaders: I like to personally focus more on growth rather than promotions. 45:54 - The challenge to listening to written communication: You don't have much visibility on the emotion 47:48 - Explaining the concept of JOMO [Joy of Missing Out] 49:30 - The wisdom you find in asking question when in doubt 52:28 - Clint's significant message: "...that investment overtime accrues to much quicker decision-making, much more empowered people growing into leads..." Key Takeaways: "Before we decide what we are trying to achieve today, before we understand how much time we have on the way, let's start with a simple pulse: green, yellow, or red." - Clint Calleja "I keep reminding myself from time to time that it's okay to be vulnerable, especially with people you're working for." - Clint Calleja "I feel I need to know much less than I expected myself to in order to help people grow." - Clint Calleja "I apply the feedback on strengths that I observe, so it becomes more of an opportunity rather than a thing you're doing wrong." - Clint Calleja "There's power through connecting with people." - Clint Calleja Notes/Mentions: Obsidian: https://obsidian.md Connect with Clint Calleja: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/callejaclint/ Connect with Raquel Ark: www.listeningalchemy.com Mobile: + 491732340722 contact@listeningalchemy.com LinkedIn Podcast email: listeningsuperpower@gmail.com

Here are my most important reveals from this show. For Transformers, the Furai Soundwave. While I cherry-pick ReAction, who doesn't want Duke with a lightsaber or Snake Eyes with a trident? No Star Wars toy news this time, but I'm loving these Bad batch posters. Finally, Frog Monger sparked our JOMO (Joy of Missing Out) conversation. That still didn't keep me from ordering three.

1. Sam's life-changing strategies for (reluctantly) interacting with humans. 2. How we use humor to hide the lava of rage churning beneath our surface. 3. Sam's friendship theory and why she doesn't need a deep soul connection with every “lowercase f friend.” 4. Sam's embrace of JOMO (Joy of Missing Out)–and why she genuinely believes no one else is having a better time (except maybe Abby). 5. The behind-the-scenes story of the “Fat Babe Pool Party” Shrill show–and why that episode was one of the most important things she's ever written.
