Baba Desi. The Wizard. The Doctor. Desmond Bergen. He is known as many things and has been many things in his long life: jazzer, hippie, bodgie, pirate. In fact, he's 'been them all', he says. We are delighted to welcome Baba Desi to Radical Australia this week to share with us some tales from his long life of 94 years. Baba Desi was born in Wangaratta and also lived in Warrnambool when he was young. He has lived in Melbourne ever since. As a young man he ran Dixieland jazz dances, trained racehorses and beat up American troops with other young blokes hanging around the city. He was a supervisor at George's department stores and has always loved stirring the coppers up. He was into 'every struggle that was going on', inlcluding leading marches against the Vietnam War and nuclear power. He has run for the Senate and knew Father Bob Maguire for decades. He's been in Hollywood movies and caught the eye of Billy Connolly when he was in town. Desi says the secret to life is to be positive and just get on with things. Don't think about it, just do it. It was great having Baba Desi on the show this week. Van Badham and Ben Davison look at the shocking collapse in support for the Coalition, the nose dive in Dutton's approval and how Labor has overtaken the Liberals as the party perceived as best to manage all aspects of the economy, jobs, wages and the delivery of services.  Van and Ben explore Dutton's recent poor decisions and how taking shadow cabinet appointment advice from Pauline Hanson may be symptoms of a wider set of problems in the Liberal Party. Bill Shorten has announced a reboot to the NDIS.  Van and Ben look at what Bill announced at the National Press Club this week, the work unions are doing to make the program better and Ben shocks Van with who Dutton has put in as shadow Minister for the NDIS.  Do you know who it is? Here's a hint, they would never join their union at australianunions.org.au/wow which you can do online right now. Father Bob Maguire passed today.  Van and Ben discuss Bob's contributions to the community, to their own lives and to their sense of faith and solidarity.  It gets emotional. And the good news this week is that Australia has an Electric Vehicle strategy.  Chris Bowen and Catherine King have announced an electric vehicle strategy to help reduce emissions, lower fuel bills and improve the quality of cars available in Australia. As always we give shoutouts to our Cadre and Extend the Reach supporters who are making contributions on www.buymeacoffee.com/weekonwednesday plus there's a couple of other special shout outs.

John Safran is an award-winning documentary maker of provocative and hilarious takes on race, the media, religion and other issues. Safran first hit TV screens in 1997 on “Race Around the World”. Both John Safran's” Music Jamboree” and “John Safran vs. God” won Australian Film Industry awards for best comedy series and most original concept, and were also nominated for Logie awards. Other shows include “John Safran's Race Relations” and “Speaking in Tongues”. He co-hosted “Sunday Night Safran”, a radio talk show on Triple J with cranky but beloved Catholic priest, Father Bob Maguire. Safran's first book the award winning true crime book, “Murder in Mississippi”, is the true story of how he met a white supremacist and befriended his black killer. In his latest book, “Depends What You Mean by Extremist”, was shortlisted for General Non-Fiction Book of the Year at the Australian Book Industry Awards. This is where he attends a far-right rally in Melbourne and is led into a mad world of misfits, white nationalists, ISIS supporters and anarchists. This podcast is absolutely hilarious! He's done the craziest things and is certainly mentally strong and resilient, yet he still feels vulnerable when he puts out his creative content.
