Ep 286 of RevolutionZ has Evan Henshaw Plath, also known as Rabble, a visionary technologist with personal roots in developing Indymedia and even Twitter. He replays the history, logic, and implications of social media from its root democratic and participatory  intentions to its corporatization and erosion of privacy and meaningful engagement. Plath takes us, as I suspect few if any others could, from the shift from social media's early, open protocols to the centralized corporations like Twitter and Facebook that came to dominate. He then explains his ongoing quest to reclaim the decentralized spirit of the web including working on modern advancements like Nostr, and his current adaptation called Nos.social. Reflecting on historical movements like Indymedia and Occupy Wall Street, Plath emphasizes the need for autonomous spaces that support radical change and envisages the potential of independent, decentralized, privacy-focused platforms. He also discusses possible  sustainable funding of these independent platforms, underscoring a needed shift from owners and consumers to co-creators and the vital role of community collaboration. RevolutionZ listeners will likely know the depth of my antipathy for social media as usually encountered. So I hope you will listen and wind up feeling as I do, that  Plath's new project, Nos.social, is  well worth our attention and support.Support the Show.

It is a sad testament to the  suffocating nature of design by standards committee which has consumed  countless hours of many thousands of smart and genuine researchers, that ultimately the entire community ended up getting it's ass kicked by a  bunch of Swedish hackers with a bunch of json blobs — the Neo4j property graph guys have had a greater impact upon the real world than the whole academic edifice of semantic web research. The Semantic Web as a movement came out of Tim Berners-LeeOne of the seminal articles:https://web.archive.org/web/20171010210556/https://pdfs.semanticscholar.org/566c/1c6bd366b4c9e07fc37eb372771690d5ba31.pdfThe Semantic Web is not a separate Web but an extension of the current one, in which information is given well-defined meaning, better enabling computers and people to work in cooperation. ... Adding logic to the Web—the means to use rules to make inferences, choose courses of action and answer questions—is the task before the Semantic Web community at the moment.      — May 17, 2001, The Semantic Web - A new form of Web content that is meaningful to computers will unleash a revolution of new possibilities, Tim Berners-Lee, James Hendler and Ora Lassila The standardization of RDF, the standardization of OWLthe big, big gap in a lot of the standards of the semantic web was some type of closed world reasoning regimeI was one of the developers of software that ran a thing called Indymedia back in the early two-thousands.most of the impetus for OWL came out of the description logic community...there's a number of very well-known and very accomplished description logic people [...] like Peter Patel-Schneider and [Ian] Horrocks in Oxford....they were using predicates to point out that two things, two data structures are the same thing. But the standard didn't ... mean for that to be used for things that just happened to be the same real world thing...Kevin discusses this misuse of owl:sameAs and owl:equivalentClass in the the fourth of his blog posts linked to above.I was talking to some of the guys in Semantic Arts, who are very busy and active consultants in the area. And then there is this thing called RDF stores...[RDF stores] are based around this concept of a triple - predicate subject objectJust like Google do actually on their front page now for their knowledge graphThe Google Knowledge Graph was introduced in 2012 with the great slogan "things, not strings"...the other thing that triples have ... is it makes revision controlled databases possible. From TerminusDB: A Technical History:...we adopted a delta encoding approach to updates as is used in source control systems such as git. This provides transaction processing and  updates using immutable database data structures, recovering standard  database management features while also providing the whole suite of  revision control features: branch, merge, squash, rollback, blame, and  time-travel...I've actually seen that very thing being described as a benefit of property graphs that each relation has its own ID and it can have [a] whole data structure associated with itSee for example neo4j's blog post RDF Triple Stores vs. Labeled Property Graphs: What's the Difference?, in the section "Difference #1: RDF Does Not Uniquely Identify Instances of Relationships of the Same Type".You can do it in SQL these days, but it's sort of a later addition... the WITH syntax, Common Table Expressions they are called... you can actually do recursive queries. I once showed up at a neo4j meetup with some examples of doing graphy queries in PostgreSQL using Common Table Expressions. (The presentation would have been more impressive if I had but some indexes on those tables...) A way better introduction is the excellent page on The WITH Clause in the SQLite documentation.People beat up on normal-form modeling and SQL way more than they should.A good recent blog post on this topic: Normalization is not a process.Even when I'm modelling graph stuff, I start off with basically ERD.We started out with the Java Jena library for Semantic Web. ★ Support this podcast ★

Dr. Chew has a B.S. Environmental Interpretation and an M.S. Range Science (Ecology) from Colorado State University, and a Ph.D. in Biology from Arizona State University. As statewide Natural Resources Planner for Arizona State Parks, he coordinated their Natural Areas Program, researched wildlife issues, and served on interagency committees, one of which also included his future wife, plant ecologist Julie Stromberg. Julie was recently featured as a guest on Kollibri terre Sonnenblume's podcast, Voices for Nature and Peace. Currently employed at Arizona State University, Dr. Chew conducts a field course in ‘novel ecosystems,' lectures in ‘history of biology' and ‘biology and society', and works with postgraduate students. Past experiences include urban bike farmer, Indymedia activist, and music critic. Kollibri holds a BA in “Writing Fiction & Non-fiction” from the St. Olaf Paracollege in Northfield, Minnesota. Kollibri hosts and curates the Voices for Nature and Peace Podcast. You can read his writings focused on ecology and politics at Maska Moskska press, linked in the bio.   Gabe Crawford was raised on a small homestead outside of Durango, Colorado and started learning about plants from an early age. He got launched on his plant journey by studying with Katrina Blair at the Turtle Lake Refuge in Durango. He moved to Sandpoint, Idaho where he worked with Twin Eagles Wilderness School and Kaniksu Land Trust mentoring kids. Through this, he started naturalist training which opened him up to the world of wild tending, Traditional Ecological Knowledge and the ancient and intricate relationships between humans and ecology. Gabe spent time with Finisia Medrano learning about the ancient wild gardens of the west that were and still are tended by indigenous peoples and was taught how to tend these first foods and plant back for future abundance. He collects the seeds of native foods plants, fruit trees, berries and other exotics to plant feral orchards and wild gardens.   In this conversation, Kollibri, Nikki and Gabe take a deep dive into the history of "invasion biology" and reveal its scientific shortcomings and its cultural biases.   This is a crossover episode with Kollibri's podcast, Voices for Nature and Peace, so we are airing it on both podcasts at the same time. "We're All Preppers Now" feat. Margaret Killjoy Margaret Killjoy is a transfeminine author and editor currently living in a self-built cabin in the Appalachian mountains. She is the author of the Danielle Cain series of novellas, published by Tor.com. She hosts the podcast, "Live Like the World is Dying," in which she interviews people who think about how to prepare for and survive crises. Politically, she is an anarchist: she believes that society would be better off without systems of hierarchy and oppression such as the state, capitalism, white supremacy, patriarchy, and the like. Margaret and I have known each other since the early 2000s in Portland, Oregon, where we were both involved in the Indymedia and forest defense scenes. We lived in the same activist house for awhile, and I always appreciated her analysis, creativity and hard work. We hadn't talked for over a decade at the time of this interview, but we fell right back into an easy, enjoyable dialogue. There's more laughter than usual in this episode, as both of us can approach serious topics with levity. Our conversation was centered around an essay she wrote in early January called, "We're All Preppers Now." We discussed elite panic; the three essential components of successful prepping: skills, gear and relationships; the different scales of preparation including individual, community and grid-level; the difficulties of agriculture; the challenges of off-grid living, including our own personal experiences; "frontiersman" mythology; the importance of being in relation to the land where you live; how abstinence is not the most effective response to exploitation; anarchism as social organization; anarchists in history; the role of imagination in making positive change; electoral politics and activism; the possibility of famine; and climate change. We end the podcast with a recording of the song "Cast Fire," from her band, Alsarath, which also plays in the background of this episode's introduction. In a two part series we explore the impacts platform capitalism (corporate social media) is having on art collectives and communities in Indonesia. Platforms such as Facebook, Whatsapp and Twitter, while being used by many collectives, activists and others around the world to organise, have serious implications for security, surveillance and control or ownership of content. More broadly the very way in which we socialise and organise has changed considerably. Our very concepts of space, community and relationships are being changed by these platforms. The first part of this series features Wimo, Akiq, and Dito, members of Mes56, an artist community and collective house in Jogjakarta, Indonesia. The members discuss their use of platforms, the effect this is having a well as the connections between the Covid-19 pandemic and platform capitalism. Interviews were conducted as a part of workshops held at Mes56 in June, 2020 by Rangga Purbaya, coordinated by Indymedia's Raymond Grenfell, for Curtin University and RTRFM.

Ep. 25: "Portland vs. The Feds" feat. Blank First-hand report from the tear-gas filled streets Federal officers have been in Portland, Oregon, for the last few days, on Trump's orders. They have been abducting people off the streets into unmarked vehicles and attacking protesters with a variety of "less than lethal" weapons including tear gas, pepper pellets and flash-bang grenades. George Floyd protests in Portland have been active downtown there for over fifty days, but numbers had dwindled to a few hundred a night. But with the arrival of the Feds, crowds have swollen into the thousands again, and last night (July 22nd) the mayor himself was tear-gassed. Blank is an Indymedia comrade of mine from back in the day, and we logged a lot of hours on the streets together covering protests during the Bush regime. In his second appearance on this show, he gives us the low down on what he's been seeing, including what happened to the mayor. Blank is a life long Portland resident and has been providing streaming reports from Portland on a regular basis during the recent uprising. "Interview with a Tree-sitter" feat. Lupine Episode 19: Interview with a Tree-sitter, featuring Lupine When I first moved to Portland, Oregon, in the spring of 2001, I happened to end up living across the street from the Cascadia Forest Alliance (CFA). CFA was involved in direct action protests to stop logging in the Pacific Northwest, including tree-sits. I covered their efforts as an Indymedia reporter, and got to spend time with them in the forest, learning about ecology and resistance. So I was thrilled to have the chance, in the second week of June, 2020, to interview Lupine, a tree-sitter who is currently participating in a Redwood Forest Defense campaign to stop logging at a site in Humboldt County, California. We spoke on the phone, and though we were disconnected several times by a weak signal, we were able to have a great conversation. Tree-sitters have always been heroes to me, and I really appreciated the chance to connect with someone from the newest generation to be out there fighting the good fight. “I remember walking home from that huge protest and feeling this sense of huge hope in the air…And it was just really exciting and it felt like things actually could change.” –Becca Shaw Glazer In this episode, we speak with activists who participated in protests against the World Trade Organization in the 1990s and 2000s. The 1999 Seattle protest against the WTO is often seen as the beginning of a worldwide anti-globalization movement and the Indymedia movement. About 40,000 people took to the streets to express their dissent, and protestors successfully blocked delegates from entering the convention center, delaying the meeting. The protests became known as “The Battle of Seattle” because of the police violence that ensued in response. We focus on the protests that took place in Seattle, and then share an interview with someone who participated in WTO protests in Cancun, one of the protests that took place globally as a result. A huge thank you to our interviewees for speaking with us for this episode: Becca Shaw Glaser, Danielle Chynoweth, Mark Enslin, and Celeste. Our first walking tour! Protesters descending on Washington, D.C. to #DisruptJ20 are stepping into a long history of resistance in the belly of the beast. One of the most innovative and powerful cycles of protest in the nation's capital was the movement against corporate globalization in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Most tours of D.C. take you around the monuments and museums downtown, but we want to show you another side of the city—the neighborhoods and DIY spaces from which anarchists launched attacks on capital and where seeds were planted for a new world to take its place. Through historic sites, interviews, and a scrapbook of anti-capitalist mementos, we hope to pass on some of the lessons and inspiration that the anti-globalization movement can offer, especially as a new wave of struggle begins under Trump. {January 9, 2017}   -------SHOW NOTES------   We've put together a YouTube version of the walking tour with the photos included at our YouTube channel Anarchist history is not for books you can close and set away on a shelf. Use the lessons and inspiration from this episode to get active. You can start next week with the #DisruptJ20 anti-inaugural activities in DC on January 20th. We discuss and sample multiple documentaries about the mass anti-corporate globalization protests that took place during the late 1990s and early 2000s. Many of these can be found online, like This Is What Democracy Looks Like, Breaking the Spell, Breaking the Bank, The Miami Model, and the highly recommended Crowd Bites Wolf. The excerpt from the A16 Revolutionary Anti-Capitalist Bloc statement came from The Black Bloc Papers, which is a great resource for understanding that part of early 2000s anarchism.
