Anyone who has been been involved in the Christian-atheist rumblings on Twitter for any amount of time may be familiar with the name SJ Thomason.  By trade, SJ Thomason is a professor of business administration with a PhD in the field.  However, SJ Thomason is also a Christian apologist, and the reason I juxtapose the two is that Christian apologetics is this very unique cultural phenomenon in which people who are eminently book-smart in areas not related to religious belief, for some reason suddenly jettison intelligence and critical thinking skills to avoid uncomfortable conclusions about their faith.  So in light of this, about a year ago, SJ released a 2 minute video stating 10 reasons to not be an atheist. Episode 92 is a short one, and probably no better than my other episodes. Justin Brierly decided to explain why the virgin birth of Jesus isn't a fairytale (his words, not mine): 1. Matthew and Luke documented it, and Luke in particular states he interviewed eyewitnesses. 2. The pre-marital conception of Jesus wasn't made up because it would have been embarasssing. 3. Here's an oldie but not so goodie from Ray Comfort and his merry gang…5 or so years ago, Living Waters put out a video titled "Ten of the Top Scientific Facts in the Bible". Now, when I was a Creationist, I both evangelised using these and heard sermons being preached about these "facts" - and in case you were never a Creationist, the mentality behind this list is that the Bible contains nuggets of information that could only be known by people who were in tune with the Creator OF the universe because the Bible is obviously divinely inspred. Solid argument, right? Now, my impression with all of these is that Ray has read a Bible verse, tied it somewhat tenuously to something we already knew thriugh our study of the natural sciences, and then attempts to claim "ah ha! The Bible says [X]! Look how awesome it is!", when in all reality, this is the theological equivalent of 2+2=potato. But is my impression correct? Well, let me lay out my reasoning as I respond to Ray Comfort's points and see if these really are "10 of the top scientific facts in the Bible". Some time back, Todd Frield, on his Wretched Radio show, gave some very bad apologetics and it made me realise - Todd Frield could also use those same apologetics to defend Mormonism. T Bone Burnett is a multi-Grammy-winning producer, songwriter, and guitarist. Though he's widely known for his role in the bluegrass boom of the 21st century, his work has also explored the avant garde. His new album, The Invisible Light: Spells, is the second in a trilogy, mixing both folk and electronic elements. He also recently launched a new recording technology, called Ionic Originals, described as a hybrid of vinyl and CD. Burnett joins us.
