Gonzo journalist and writer John Safran on why he decided to squat in a Hollywood mansion belonging to Kanye West.John Safran has made a career out of getting into places he probably shouldn't be, from breaking into Disney Land, to infiltrating fascist strongholds in Australia.A couple of years ago, one of his journalistic expeditions saw him squatting in an abandoned Hollywood mansion belonging Kanye West.John had seen a clip of the hip hop start denying the Holocaust, defending Adolf Hitler, and claiming that Black people cannot be anti-Semitic because they are actually Jewish. His week writing and snooping in this strange house, with no running water and a vulture in the roof, made John go increasingly loopy as he tried to understand what pushed this critically acclaimed artist from celebrity eccentric to seriously 'out there'.This episode of Conversations was first broadcast in 2024It explores Kanye West, Judaism, antisemitism, Hollywood, hip hop, Christianity, Nazism, racism, hip hop, squatting, the Donda Academy, journalism, Adidas, money, fame, documentary, writing, the Holocaust, mental health, celebrity, mansionsFurther informationSquat is published by Penguin.

John Safran burst into the public consciousness in 1997 as a contestant in the ABC TV show Race Around the World, where young filmmakers travelled the world making four-minute films in just 10 days. Safran won the popular vote on the reality show after running through Jerusalem naked, and asking a voodoo priest to put a curse on an ex-girlfriend. Almost 30 years on, the show is back, with Safran as a judge. Today’s conversation is hosted by Good Weekend senior writer Gay Alcorn, who talks to Safran about that early experience, but also growing up Jewish, antisemitism and the contradictions and limits of free speech.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
John Safran is a cult Australian documentarian and professional bear-poker whose career has included everything from trying to join the Ku Klux Klan to getting crucified in the Philippines - and he says he’d probably still do it all again. The filmmaker first gained fame in Race Around the World in 1997 and since then has always inserted himself into the centre of uncomfortable stories, including squatting inside Kanye West’s abandoned mansion while trying to understand the psychology behind Ye’s antisemitic spiral. In this chat with Sacha Barbour Gatt, John shares his take on free speech in 2026, why censorship means something completely different in the internet age and how Australians are smarter than we give them credit for. When Australian comedian John Safran flew to Rankin County, Mississippi to confront a white nationalist named Richard Barrett with a surprise DNA test, he had no idea the man would be killed eleven months later — by a 22-year-old Black neighbor he'd hired to do yard work. Safran returned to Mississippi to write his first true-crime book, expecting a clear-cut story about racism and a perfect victim. What he found instead was something stranger: a town built on things left unspoken, a killer who scammed him for gift cards from jail, and a relationship between victim and killer that defied the assumptions he'd brought with him. Jed talks with Safran about his book "Murder in Mississippi," the ethics of crime reporting, and what an outsider notices about the South that the rest of us miss. Aussie icon John Safran dropped by to chat about his wild new book, Squat: A Week Squatting at Kanye's Mansion. He dove into his investigative antics, where he hilariously broke into Kanye's abandoned LA mansion to reflect on the rapper's spiraling controversies and antisemitic remarks. Safran didn't hold back as he exclusively spilled all the juicy details of how he cracked the gated community (like a true stealth pro). Then, things took a turn for the competitive when John squared off with us in Quick Draw! Did his wit match his quick hands?See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Tim's officially an ARIA Awards legend! We unpack everything from his night hosting the biggest event in Aussie music. Then we switch gears to the 2025 Coachella lineup—Lady Gaga, Green Day, and Post Malone are headlining, but who else caught our eye? Plus, Joel's got his eye on a charity auction for a Zoom chat with Kaitlan Collins, but is this obsession worth it? Over in the Glossys, Kim K's latest headline involves getting a little too comfortable with a Tesla robot. Meanwhile, Ricki leans into classic female stereotypes, admitting her back is always sore. Oh, and we couldn't forget the South African student who scammed free KFC for a year, the marathon runner who shat her pants mid-race (what she said is unreal), and John Safran joins us to spill details on breaking into Kanye West's gated community while playing Quick Draw.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

For those of you interested in portraiture in Australia, Yvette Coppersmith needs no introduction. She has painted dozens of portraits, including a collection of fascinating self-portraits, and is regularly shortlisted in the country's most competitive portrait awards. In 2018 she was awarded the one that would place her in Australian art history - the Archibald Prize. What has captured my attention more recently, though, are Yvette's abstract works, particularly a body of work I saw in her exhibition ‘Presage' at Sullivan + Strumpf in Sydney last year. They were thickly textured, swirling abstractions and how she came to create that show is as interesting as the paintings themselves. Yvette has been painting for over 20 years and her work is held in many public and private collections. In addition to winning the Archibald Prize, she has won the Metro 5 Art Award and has been a finalist multiple times in nearly every prestigious portrait prize in Australia, including the Doug Moran, Portia Geach, and Darling Portrait prizes. In this episode we follow her career from her early photorealistic works to her present-day experimentation with paint and genre, encompassing still lifes and interiors along the way.
