My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is MT Bass, author of the book Racing the Dream. M.T. Bass is a scribbler of fiction who holds fast to the notion that while victors may get to write history, novelists get to write/right reality. He lives, writes, flies, and makes music in Mudcat Falls, USA. Born in Athens, Ohio, M.T. Bass grew up in St. Louis, Missouri. He graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University, majoring in English and Philosophy, then worked in the private sector (where they expect "results") mainly in the Aerospace & Defense manufacturing market. During those years, Bass continued to write fiction. He is the author of twelve novels, two novellas, and a collection of verse. His writing spans various genres, including Mystery, Adventure, Romance, Black Comedy, and TechnoThrillers. A Commercial Pilot and Certified Flight Instructor, airplanes and pilots are featured in many of his stories. Bass currently lives on the shores of Lake Erie near Lorain, Ohio. In my book review, I stated Racing the Dream is another book that spans genres. It's a mix of historical fiction, romance, and suspense - and if you are like me, you are going to enjoy it! Hawk is a WWII fighter pilot turned air racer who starts on a simple course near his airport and ends up racing in the first National Air Racing Championship. His engineer, Father Bob, has been with Hawk since a mishap in the Congo, along with his mechanic, Sparks. The three of them work to get as much speed as they can out of Hawk's racer. But let's talk about the romance and the suspense. Hawk meets Allison, an official wing-walker and surfer girl. Blonde, beautiful, and daring, she sweeps Hawk off his feet, and he'll do anything for her - including becoming a pilot for the show. As to the suspense, that comes in the form of Hawk's nemesis - another pilot who wants to win. However, this pilot is willing to win at any cost. Could the cost be Hawk's plane? Or worse, his life? I learned a lot about air racing, wing walking, and flying low, fast, and turning left. Enjoy the book! Robert Jordan, raised in a small village in Upstate New York, grew up in a hardworking, blue-collar family with strong community ties. After high school, he farmed cattle for nine years before earning a degree from SUNY Albany. Inspired by the 1993 World Trade Center attack, he joined the Navy at age 34, intending to serve briefly before law school but instead committed to a long military career. Jordan served five tours in Afghanistan, rising from Chief Petty Officer to Chief Warrant Officer in elite special operations. Witnessing both the brutality of war and the resilience of the Afghan people, he dedicated himself to humanitarian efforts, assisting widows, orphans, and struggling communities. After retiring in 2019, he founded a nonprofit supporting Afghanistan's poorest and continues advocating for veterans. Now an author, pastor, and philanthropist, Jordan has published books like Faith, Flag, and Family and The Warms of the Gospel series. He also co-authored a teen novella, Mackenzie's Good Fortune Through Misadventure, with his granddaughter. He hosts the Veterans Outlook podcast and leads Task Force Genesis, helping veterans heal through agriculture.
Retired priest, Father Robert Banzin, has devoted his life to the service of others. Now in his 80s, he continues to preach every Sunday at his Chicago-area parish. Father Bob, as he is known in his community, gets an alarming email claiming that his PayPal account had been used for a purchase on eBay. Concerned, he calls a number he believes to be PayPal's customer service and is informed that his bank account has been compromised. Within weeks, every penny of his life savings had been stolen. But all is not lost, as former students and parishioners rally to support him.
As we kickstart 2025, episode 51 welcomes Father Bob Kraig, a priest in the Cleveland Catholic Diocese for over 50 years and a profound role model for living a life full of purpose. During our conversation, Kraig shares vulnerable stories about his relationship with God and why we all ought to dive into one of our own. In essence, faith is the cornerstone for embracing the messiness of our lives, and the rooting of ourselves in gratitude allows us to see God in our daily lives. For anyone desiring peace, stability, the "rock" in our lives, grace, joy, abundance, considering the topics of episode 51 is worthwhile. Be warned, though: you will not be the same after diving into this episode. Today we have an inside look into life in the Ford White House thanks to Bob Barrett's new book Inside the President's Team: Family, Service, and the Gerald Ford Presidency, which comes out January 7. In this book, Bob — who was one of President Ford's most trusted advisers — gives us a behind-the-curtain view of the Ford presidency as, second to Gerald Ford's wife Betty Ford, no one was closer to the president during his administration than Bob Barrett. Bob carried the “nuclear football” of the American nuclear codes, and literally couldn't let President Ford out of his sight. This led to a deep friendship with the First Family and gave Bob an inside look into the administration, which, born through President Nixon's resignation over Watergate, will always hold a unique place in history. In Inside the President's Team, we go inside the White House and inside the First Family in a way we've never really seen before. I want to pause here and say that I loved the insights on First Lady Betty Ford — you all know I love to study First Ladies, and she is one of my favorites. Inside the President's Team talks about why Ford decided to pardon Nixon for Watergate, and how he responded to criticism over his decision; what happened during the two assassination attempts on President Ford; and even about Betty Ford's intervention. President Ford was, as Bob puts it, “the most decent, honorable, trustworthy person I ever met.” Now, Bob actually passed away in 2022, so we have today on the show his son Nils Barrett to talk about his father and this remarkable book. We chat about how the Ford presidency already is remembered to history 50 years later and how it might be remembered 50 years from now; who both Bob Barrett and Gerald Ford were at their core; and how Bob continued serving Ford after his time in office ended, helping develop the Gerald R. Ford Museum in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the Ford Presidential Library in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and the Betty Ford Center for drug and alcohol rehabilitation in Rancho Mirage, California. Ultimately, this book celebrates living a life of service, and Bob himself served two tours in Vietnam with the U.S. Army and attained the rank of major. He worked at the United States Army War College as its Public Affairs and Communications officer and was offered the role of military aid to President Ford at the start of his administration — hence the nuclear football. I can't wait for you to get to know him through the eyes of his son. Inside the President's Team: Family, Service, and the Gerald Ford Presidency by Bob Barrett
