Morphing from racer to coach and why his personality was perfect for the role. The constant thirst for information on how to be a better athlete which gave his academy international acclaim. Branching out and tackling desert enduros as well as memories of Finke in a milestone year for the race. A podium in the Castrol 6-hour - a late circuit racing bloom. Childhood memories of the Sydney Showground Speedway a making the move into Midgets (Speedcars). A 4-wheel title win and a Sprintcar crash which took its toll. Plus the little known Supercars test and the juggle of trying to coach Matt Mladin and James Stewart Stateside. This week, Imara sits down for a vulnerable conversation with Minnesota State Representative Leigh Finke, the first trans woman ever elected to the MN House of Representatives. In her time in office, Finke has focused on policies that expand housing and healthcare access and cement civil rights protections, most notably a trans refuge law that includes some of the strongest legal protections for gender-affirming care in the nation. But Rep. Finke's time in office has been filled with turmoil. In June of last year, her friend and MN House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband were killed in a politically motivated murder. And, more recently, Minneapolis was besieged by ICE, which resulted in the killing of two citizens. In this episode, Rep. Finke gets real about how hard it is to be a trans legislator in today's political environment and what motivates her to keep fighting. This week's Trans Joy features Trina Tate, an educator who develops mindfulness curricula for public school students.Send your Trans Joy recommendations to translash_podcast @ translash [dot] org Follow TransLash Media @translashmedia on TikTok, Instagram, Threads, Bluesky, and Facebook.Follow Imara Jones on Instagram (@Imara_jones_), Threads (@imara_jones_), Bluesky (@imarajones.bsky.social), X (@ImaraJones)Follow Representative Leigh Finke on Instagram (@leighformn)Follow Trina Tate on Instagram (@pillowwizard) Hosted on Acast. Today we interview opera singer and songwriter Emily E. Finke. She was joining us from Florida, and was kind enough to talk about her work and music in general.
In this compelling interview, Dr. Alex Iantaffi interviews transgender pioneer and Minnesota State Representative Leigh Finke. They discuss cross-movement solidarity, the recent militarized occupation of Minnesota by ICE during Operation Metro Surge, the impact of the current political violence on trans communities, especially trans women, and on Leigh herself, and the importance of community organizing and political engagement in the fight for all our civil rights.Leigh Finke is honored to serve as State Representative for District 66A. Prior to holding office she worked as a journalist, media creator, and documentary filmmaker. In 2022, she became the first out trans woman elected to the Minnesota Legislature. During her first two terms in office, Leigh has advocated for 2SLGBTQIA+ equality, abortion rights, prison justice, and environmental equity. She chairs the House Reproductive Freedom Caucus and serves as Co-Vice Chair of the Judiciary Committee. In her personal time, Leigh enjoys writing, painting, traveling, skateboarding, and organizing community events, and exploring Minnesota's parks with her kids.A few invitations and takeaways from the episode:Cross-movement solidarity is essential because our liberation is tied to one another.Trans, Two-Spirit, nonbinary, and/or gender expansive people are part of and belong in all communities.Engage in local and state elections to support 2SLGBTQ+ rights.Build community networks for mutual support and safety.Advocate for policies that protect civil rights and gender-affirming care, especially for minors.Educate yourselves and others about the systemic nature of injustice and resistance.Find out more about Leigh Finke at the following links:https://www.leighformn.com/about https://linktr.ee/leighformn24 https://www.instagram.com/leighformn/ Instagram: GenderStoriesHosted by Alex IantaffiMusic by Maxwell von RavenGender Stories logo by Lior Effinger-Weintraub

A year ago, I stood up in a Minnesota committee hearing and made a case so clear that Democrat Rep. Leigh Finke got up and walked out mid-testimony.This is what I said — and why it matters more now than ever.In this video, I break down the argument I made about the Women's Athletics Exemption in the Minnesota Human Rights Act, why the distinction between sex and gender identity matters in law, and what Finke's walkout tells us about where this debate is really headed.https://x.com/WalterHudson⬇️ Watch, think critically, and decide for yourself.
Democrat lawmakers in the Minnesota Capitol have been blaming me for Leigh Finke getting doxxed — because I shared Finke's own public comments about kids needing access to pornography. There's just one problem: I'm the one who authored the anti-doxxing bills. They're the ones who voted them down.In this video, I break down the hallway confrontations, the actual legislative record, and the breathtaking hypocrisy of politicians who oppose residential privacy protections — and then cry foul when their public statements go viral.I categorically oppose doxxing. I oppose residential harassment. I wrote the bills to prove it. Let's look at the receipts.

On this episode of the Mission Matters Podcast, Matthew Ellison and Ted Esler talk with Ryan Finke, CEO of International Friendships, Inc. about why international student ministry is one of the most open doors in global missions and how local churches can step into it with simple hospitality and friendship. Finke explains that 70–80% of international students never enter an American home even though most want an American friend, and he shares how IFI connects volunteers with students to ease culture shock, answer spiritual questions, and spark disciple-making that reaches families and marketplaces worldwide. The conversation covers shifting enrollment trends (fewer Chinese students, rising Indian students), the need for cross-cultural training, practical ways to serve students from airport pickup to grocery runs, and how digital strategies can extend ministry to remote enrollees overseas. You'll get a clear vision for church-led mobilization that welcomes the stranger, builds genuine friendships, and advances the Great Commission right in their own city. The Mission Matters Podcast is a place to talk about the importance of our Mission as Christians. He is the author of several books including the subject of today's interview: The Price of Freedom Denied: Religious Persecution and Conflict in the 21st Century (2011) co-authored with Brian Grim. In this book, Grim and Finke found that as religious freedoms are denied in a society, both by government and by social groups within a society, religious persecution increases. Given the quasi-establishments of evangelical Christianity developing throughout the land, it is important to be aware of the potential consequences of these church-state alliances. If cement were a country, it would be the third-largest emitter of carbon dioxide in the world, behind only China and the United States. That's because cement production alone accounts for about five and a half percent of total global greenhouse gas emissions. And while that might seem really high, it actually makes sense. Just look around you: from roads to bridges, sidewalks to buildings, cement is everywhere. It's a critical building block of modern infrastructure. What's striking about cement production is that most of the emissions actually come from the chemical reaction itself—not just from burning fuel to heat the kiln. Cement producers use limestone, a well-known carbon-storing rock we've highlighted in other episodes for its direct air capture potential. But when limestone is heated to make cement, the opposite happens: it releases carbon dioxide, accounting for about 60% of the sector's total emissions. So even if you used 100% clean electricity to power the kilns, most of the emissions would still result from this chemical process.Limestone was originally selected as a main ingredient for cement largely because it was the cheapest option. But what if it wasn't? What if there were other rocks we could use that didn't emit greenhouse gases at all? Better yet, what if they could produce the ingredients for cement cleanly—and generate other products critical to industry? That's exactly what Cody Finke, CEO and Co-Founder of Brimstone, is aiming to deliver: a way to make cement without the emissions—and create other essential industrial materials along the way.SponsorsWatt It Takes is brought to you by HSBC Innovation Banking who is proud to bank some of the most exciting companies pioneering the technologies of tomorrow. With specialist financing support, deep understanding of the challenges, and a global network across more than 50 markets, they help clients scale breakthrough innovations and take them to the world. The White House announced President Donald Trump plans to sign an executive order Wednesday afternoon banning transgender women and girls from participating in female sports at schools and colleges. The order comes on National Girls and Women in Sports Day. It is still unclear what the order, titled “Keeping Men Out of Women's Sports” will entail and what its scope will be, but it will provide insight on how the Trump administration plans to interpret Title IX of the Civil Rights Act, which is best known for its role in pursuing gender equity in athletics and preventing sexual harassment on campus. Every administration has the authority to issue its own interpretations of Title IX. The Biden administration interpreted the law to include protections for LGBTQ+ students and provide new safeguards for victims of campus sexual assault, but the policy stopped short of explicitly addressing transgender athletes. Biden's policies received a lot of pushback from Republican-led states. For perspective on how this executive order could impact transgender athletes and the trans community in Minnesota, MPR News host Nina Moini talks with Representative Leigh Finke. She is the first openly transgender person to serve in the state Legislature. In 2023, she authored a bill to protect access to gender-affirming health care, making Minnesota one of the first trans refuge states in the nation.

David McKnight looks at a recent study on retirees that seems to tell a different story compared to what many people in the U.S. tend to believe. Americans often view guaranteed lifetime income annuities skeptically – they're perceived as a drag on the growth of their stock market portfolio. According to the study by retirement researchers David Blanchett and Michael Finke, retirees with guaranteed lifetime income spend about twice as much as their counterparts who rely on stocks and bonds alone for income in retirement. Those who rely purely on investments alone in retirement end up spending less because they fear running out of money in advance of life expectancy. David explains that “retirees with annuities spend more, not because they are wealthier, but because they have a form of wealth – a guaranteed income – that encourages them to spend.” Comparing two couples, a risk-averse couple with a risk-tolerant couple, Blanchett and Finke's study found a 1.1% difference in them taking an annual withdrawal rate from their portfolio. David couldn't have been any clearer: “If you want to spend more in retirement, taking an investment-only approach is usually the worst way of going about it.” Mentioned in this episode: David's upcoming book: The Guru Gap: How America's Financial Gurus Are Leading You Astray, and How to Get Back on Track David's books: Power of Zero, Look Before You LIRP, The Volatility Shield, Tax-Free Income for Life and The Infinity Code DavidMcKnight.com DavidMcKnightBooks.com PowerOfZero.com (free 3-part video series) @mcknightandco on Twitter @davidcmcknight on Instagram David McKnight on YouTube Get David's Tax-free Tool Kit at taxfreetoolkit.com David Blanchett Michael Finke
