Two hundred and fifty years of American history is no small thing to celebrate. And as communities of faith mark this momentous milestone, there is a story worth telling and retelling: the story of a nation whose foundations were laid by men and women who looked to God and to Scripture as the source of true freedom. The Founding Fathers themselves declared that the law of nature was the will of God, binding upon all people in all ages. The Bible was not incidental to America's beginnings. It was central to them. The evidence runs deep. The Great Awakening united thirteen separate colonies in a spiritual revival that prepared hearts for the nation's founding. The Black Robed Regiment, a group of bold patriotic pastors, preached liberty from their pulpits and rallied colonists to stand for their biblically grounded beliefs. The Declaration of Independence drew from Christian sources and the writings of men shaped by Scripture. And public schools were established specifically so that children could read the Bible for themselves, the same foundational text that gave rise to Harvard, Yale, Princeton, and William and Mary. As America turns 250, this is a day to praise God with grateful hearts for His hand in establishing this nation, to hold firm to the biblical truths it was built upon, and to ask Him for the wisdom and faithfulness to carry those principles forward into the next generation. Today's Bible Verse "Let everything that has breath praise the Lord. Praise the Lord."— Psalm 150:6, NIV Ponder Today America's founding was deeply rooted in biblical principles. The Founding Fathers did not view faith as separate from governance. They looked to God as the source of natural law, human dignity, and true freedom, and they built accordingly. Spiritual revival preceded national founding. The Great Awakening was not merely a religious event — it was the spiritual preparation that united thirteen separate colonies and forged a people willing to pursue freedom together. Pastors have always had a role in shaping a nation's conscience. The Black Robed Regiment is a striking historical reminder that the Church has a voice in the public square, and that faithfully preaching biblical truth has consequences far beyond the sanctuary walls. Freedom, rightly understood, is a gift from God. The Declaration of Independence grounded its claims in the recognition that certain rights are endowed by the Creator. That foundation is worth celebrating and defending on this 250th anniversary. Every generation is responsible for passing on what was entrusted to them. Ronald Reagan's reminder still rings true: freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. Celebrating America's heritage includes committing to carry it forward with wisdom and faithfulness. As America marks its 250th anniversary, there's no better time to ask: what has kept this nation standing? Elizabeth Carlyle's answer is simple — prayer.   Elizabeth learned that at age eleven, when her father suffered a heart attack and was rushed away in an ambulance. She rode her bike to the end of the street, watched it go by, and prayed. He survived. And fifty years later, she still prays every time she hears a siren. That moment became the foundation of a life built on the belief that prayer isn't a last resort — it's the first and most powerful thing you can do.   Elizabeth is an author, attorney, and Bible study teacher, and the CEO of First Freedom Art Company — the stewards of Arnold Freeberg's famous painting of George Washington, Prayer at Valley Forge. Nine-time Emmy winner David Sams sits down with the Grammy award-winning artist to reflect on the song's remarkable 40-year journey — from being written in the back of a tour bus in 1983 to becoming the only song ever charted in the top five across all genres of music. Lee shares stories from nearly 300 days a year on the road, performing at two presidential inaugurations at the Lincoln Memorial, touring with Bob Hope on his final USO Christmas tour, and what it felt like to watch "God Bless The U.S.A." surge back to the top after 9/11 and the Gulf War. On the eve of America's 250th anniversary, 1776 Forward co-founders K. Joia Houheneka and Chris Bush hosted an evening that accomplished what few conversations manage: it modeled the very thing it celebrated.The event brought together original contributors to the Free Society Coalition's Philadelphia Declaration as well as current active members, including David Kelley, Lawrence Reed, Brent Hamachek, Felisa Blazek, Dan Isadore, and Craig Kreinbihl.The discussion moved across three distinct threads. First, the backstory: how roughly sixty people representing different philosophical traditions, faith backgrounds, and views on contested issues gathered in Philadelphia in 2024 and committed to finding shared moral ground upstream from politics. Participants described eleven drafting iterations, months of working sessions, and at least one full day debating the definition of agency. This was a process of seeking consensus that mirrored, as several noted, the Founding Fathers' own long dialogue before 1776.Second, the substance: what actually made it into the declaration, and why. David Kelley articulated the document's anchoring premise — that reality, reason, individual agency, and voluntary exchange form the moral bedrock of a free society — and distinguished the negative rights the Founders enshrined in America's originating documents from the obligation-imposing "rights" that have proliferated in the years since.Third, the practice: using the FSC's Happy Birthday Freedom brochure as a live guide, the group modeled Socratic discussion, demonstrating how probing questions about the Declaration of Independence's most consequential phrases can open genuine reflection rather than partisan debate.Two moments stood out. Brent Hamachek's observation that consensus wasn't about finding a right word but the right word, every single one.
