The Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was created as a more rigid interpretation of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, more specifically to continue practicing polygamy after the LDS church stopped. Because there was never any structure within the FLDS, there have been battles for power since its inception, and the cult has always been rife with abuse and corruption. When Rulon Jeffs became the prophet and his son manipulated his way to the position at his death, the FLDS reached all-new levels of depravity. He was a lunatic regarded as the mouth of God, and the obedience of his followers was essential to their access to heaven. The entire cult is an example of the repeating cycles of abuse and a lesson that the only good cult is a Creep It Real cult. When Rulon Jeffs prophet powers were (naturally) transferred to his son at the time of his death, the already maniacal man became an even bigger nightmare for the followers of FLDS than they had previously known. Using his "powers" he was able to convince them all to go along with ANYTHING, from forced child marriages to the possibility they would have to slice the throats of their wives if commanded. It's awful, but he gets what's coming to him and helps remind us all that they only good cult is a Creep It Real cult. In a courageous personal memoir of resilience and redemption, BREAKING FREE: How I Escaped Polygamy, the FLDS Cult, and my Father, Warren Jeffs (Harper; on sale November 14, 2017; $27.99), Rachel chronicles the shocking details her singular life, from her insular childhood to her eventual liberation, for the first time revealing the facts about her father's sexual abuse, which began when she was eight years old. “The most important rule in the FLDS religion is this: Never question the Prophet,” Rachel writes with the hindsight and strength of a survivor. Since that self-appointed prophet was her father, Rachel grew up not questioning the unconventional daily realities she lived or the personal ordeals to which she was subjected. Her closest sister was also her cousin, their mothers sisters. Living in rural poverty, often with little to eat, the children were raised through indoctrination and humiliation.
