There are real fears that up to 70 percent of girls will soon be in early or forced marriages in Afghanistan. To make matters worse, a new law now means that divorce at any future stage would be totally impossible if the husband were to disagree. Activists say this shameful new law will further place girls and women in a subordinate, legally unequal position to men. Mursal Sayas, a writer, journalist and founder of the NGO Women Beyond Borders told us more in Perspective.

Of course there is corruption in US politics that some call campaign contributions but President Trump and family have said "hold our beer" with the just the latest being a slush fund to pay off people who attacked the capitol in 2021.There have been corrupt presidents in the past - Harding and Nixon come to mind but nothing like the scale of the Trump family - there doesn't seem to be any policy or action they can't profit from.Other stories in the episode include Ohio Republicans' effort to place a photo ID requirement into the state constitution. The proposal copies existing Ohio law but we note the added language that could make early voting harder or impossible by limiting voting to in-person voting on Election Day.Ohio Senate President Rob McColley who is running on a ticket with Vivek Ramaswamy for Ohio Governor, personally removed a child marriage ban from the Senate Judiciary committee so it couldn't be voted to the Senate floor. It was a bi-partisan bill with no public opposition before McColley stuck his nose in for no apparent reason. For a party that runs on "protecting children" it is a bad look for the Ohio GOP and Ramaswamy.Full Show Notes & Links UsedSend us Fan MailSupport the showSubscribe to our free newsletterCheck out our MerchFollow us on BlueskyFind us on Twitter(for now) Find us on InstagramFind us on Counter SocialFind us on Mastadon
The pandemic triggered something unexpected: American fathers started working less and spending significantly more time on childcare and housework — and new research suggests it wasn't remote work or job loss driving the shift, but a genuine realignment of gender norms. Plus: some scientists are calling this the biggest advancement in cancer treatment in 15 years – a drug called daraxonrasib which is nearing FDA approval and substantially extends the lives of pancreatic cancer patients; Brazil has officially begun demarcating over a million acres of protected land for an uncontacted Indigenous tribe in the Amazon; and Oklahoma became the 17th U.S. state to ban child marriage, ruffling some feathers. In this first episode of the Social Inclusion Series*, we shine a spotlight on adolescent girls. Adolescence is a turning point—but one that often goes overlooked in social protection. These years are filled with major transitions, especially for girls, who often face greater challenges in staying in school, taking on care responsibilities, navigating sexual debut, and making decisions about their futures. These challenges are often driven by underlying gender inequalities and poverty, which shape and often constrain these pathways. In this episode, we explore how social protection can help shift that trajectory. Focusing on risks such as child marriage and early pregnancy, we unpack how well-designed programmes can support girls to stay in school, access essential services, and navigate this critical stage of life with greater security. It also discusses how crisis—from economic shocks to climate change—can deepen risks, making already fragile transitions even more uncertain for adolescent girls. Our guests dive into the evidence on what works providing some examples in Asia and worldwide and discuss why investing in adolescent girls is key to building more inclusive, resilient and climate-adaptive societies. Meet our guests: Kath Ford, Deputy Director, Young Lives Research Program, University of Oxford Dr. Nyasha Tirivayi, Social Policy Manager, UNICEF Office of Strategy and Evidence-Innocenti For our Quick Wins segment, we spoke with Eunice Tumwebaze, who is the Manager for Gender, Youth, and Children at the Kampala Capital City Authority in Uganda, who provided and overview of the Uganda's first urban social protection program for girls called “Girls Empowering Girls”. *The Social Inclusion Series, produced by socialprotection.org in partnership with Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), is a three-part series that explores how social protection systems can advance the economic and social inclusion of vulnerable populations across the Indo-Pacific, in line with GEDSI principles, addressing key themes such as gender equality, demographic shifts, and disability inclusion. Though illegal, child marriage is widely practiced in India. UNICEF's latest estimate is that 216 million girls and women in India today have been married before they turned 18. But some girls and young women are trying to resist the practice. In this short documentary, we meet Munna, who found an unusual way out of becoming a child bride - through playing football. This episode of is based on the documentary India's sportswomen playing to be seen from Assignment on the BBC World Service. In this episode, I speak with Imran Matin of BRAC University's Institute for Governance and Development and my CGD colleague Kehinde Ajayi about why child marriage persists and what evidence tells us about how to reduce it. We discuss how the drivers vary across contexts, and what policies have been shown to work, including education investments, empowerment programs for adolescent girls, and cash transfers designed to delay marriage.
Somewhere in the world, a girl is married every three seconds. The rates vary in the Pacific, however in Papua New Guinea 27 per cent of women aged 20 to 24 were married before they turned 18. And in some countries, like Solomon Islands, the legal age of marriage is 15 with parental or judicial consent. The organisation Girls Not Brides works around the world to put an end to child marriages. It says child marriage can disrupt a girl's education, lead to birth trauma and is often associated with gender-based violence. Sistas Let's Talk host Natasha Meten speaks with three women who have witnessed firsthand the impacts of child marriage in their communities. They include Jascinta Eket, a maternal health nurse who has spent more than three decades working in the Southern Highlands of Papua New Guinea; Joyce Koupere from World Vision Papua New Guinea; and Ellen Kahui, who is part of Save the Children's Make it 18 campaign, lobbying for the legal age of marriage in the Solomon Islands to be raised to 18 for all girls.
What if “I do” isn't a choice? We sit down with Hellitz Villegas, Project Manager of the Forced Marriage Initiative at the Tahirih Justice Center, to expose how forced marriage operates in the U.S.—and why consent must include the partner, the timing, and the freedom to say no without fear. We move beyond stereotypes to examine the hidden machinery of coercion: family pressure, spiritual manipulation, financial dependence, and the weaponization of immigration status that keeps survivors silent.Hellitz shares how Tahirih's integrated model—legal services, social services, and policy advocacy—supports immigrant survivors of gender-based violence while the Forced Marriage Initiative serves people facing forced or child marriage across statuses. We clarify the difference between arranged and forced marriage, trace the links to domestic and sexual violence, and highlight the unique vulnerability window before a ceremony when a survivor senses what's coming. The conversation covers high-control religious groups, family-based trafficking, and cases where marriage is used to “correct” a survivor's identity or life choices. We also dive into child marriage in America: why loopholes still allow minors—mostly girls—to wed adult men, the lifelong consequences of early marriage, and the policy momentum to end it. From local bans to the federal Child Marriage Prevention Act, we explore how closing immigration loopholes and setting a bright-line age of 18 with no exceptions can change lives. Along the way, we name the real barriers to help—fear of deportation, mistrust of systems, and cultural stigma—and share practical pathways to safety, rights, and support. If you care about consent, community safety, and human dignity, this is a vital listen. Subscribe to the show, share this episode with a friend, and leave a review with the one policy change you think should happen first. Your voice helps push this movement forward.

In this episode of Living The Good Life, hosts Deb Morais and Steve Kass shine a light on two urgent and seemingly unrelated issues shaping the moral and social landscape of our time: child marriage in the United States and the rapid rise of artificial intelligence in daily life and education.First, Deb and Steve unpack the disturbing truth that child marriage remains legal in more than 30 states, often enabled by loopholes that override minimum age requirements. Drawing from a recent New York Times article by Nicholas Kristof, they explore the legal, social, and religious factors that perpetuate this practice - and the devastating consequences for young girls deprived of agency, safety, and opportunity. The conversation calls for greater public awareness, policy reform, and community vigilance to protect vulnerable children. The discussion then pivots to another complex modern issue: the accelerating impact of artificial intelligence on education, creativity, and human independence. The hosts examine how tools like ChatGPT are reshaping classrooms, professional writing, and even parenting, sometimes at the expense of critical thinking and academic integrity. They weigh the benefits of AI for research and organization against its potential to erode authentic learning and creativity.
Abhay engages in a profound conversation with acclaimed and award-winning Indian lawyer, child rights activist, and founder of Just Rights For Children, Bhuwan Ribhu. They discuss the evolution of child protection laws in India, the challenges of child marriage and trafficking, and the importance of building trust and accountability in advocacy efforts. Bhuwan shares insights on the systemic changes needed for effective child protection and the motivation that drives his work. Their chat highlights the significance of community engagement and the role of justice in preventing child exploitation. Over two decades, Ribhu has championed major legal reforms in India to combat child labor, child marriage, trafficking, and child sexual exploitation, filing more than 60 strategic cases before the Supreme Court and High Courts. His efforts have shaped national policy, triggered landmark Supreme Court judgments, and, in 2025, earned him the Medal of Honour from the World Jurist Association—the first Indian lawyer to receive this global recognition for advancing justice and protection for children. At the 2025 UNGA meeting in New York, Bhuwan and the Just Rights For Children team were invited to spotlight global leadership and call urgent, justice driven commitments to build a Child Marriage Free World.(0:00 - 2:43) Introduction(2:43) Part 1 - Evolution of child protection laws, scaling globally(10:04) Part 2 - Building trust, securing the role of justice (23:22) Part 3 - Lessons learned in activism, motivations for the future(30:41) ConclusionLearn more about this important work and how to get involved at:https://www.justrightsforchildren.org/https://www.justrights.international/

What happens when the very laws meant to protect children instead give predators a license to abuse? In this episode of Your Radical Truth Podcast, host Margaret Mary O'Connor speaks with survivor, advocate, and bestselling author Donna Simmons, whose life story exposes the devastating reality of child marriage in the United States. Donna reveals how systemic failures, generational trauma, and outdated laws continue to silence survivors and perpetuate abuse. It is a call to action, urging lawmakers and communities alike to confront the truth and demand change. This conversation is raw, urgent, and necessary. Our weekly airing of the grievances is perhaps a little spicy this time because frankly, we're sweating our butts off. Lucky for Texas, renewable energy has carried the load keeping the AC on, but Republicans still hate it. A curious child marriage bill gets a curious House vote, which we'll explain. Ted Cruz wants to give babies a grand (thanks Ted!). And, the nerds of PT are fired up over Andor and the important political lessons it carries for progressive types these days. Child marriage remains a significant challenge in Nepal, impacting the lives of tens of thousands of young girls. While its prevalence has dropped from a staggering 60 per cent in 2006 to about 35 per cent in 2022, one in three girls is still married off before turning 18.Economic hardship, lack of access to education, cultural norms and gender inequality continue to drive the practice, with devastating consequences for young girls. Boys are also affected, with one in 10 forced into early marriage.UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) has been working alongside the Government and partners in Nepal to combat the scourge. UN News' Vibhu Mishra spoke to UNICEF Representative in Nepal, Alice Akunga.

Mohammad married Ayesha at age 6 and consummated the marriage at age 9. The Quran allows marriage of prepubescent child (Sura 65:4). And since Muslims believe that Muhammad was an example for mankind; therefore Islam allows child marriage. In order to justify that; the Muslim Da'wa team lie about girls being married as a child in the Bible; Mary is one example. They find unreliable Catholic apocryphal sources. Al and David discuss this matter in more details.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
This week on the show, I'm speaking to activist and all-round incredible human being, Payzee Mahmod. I learned of the amazing work Payzee is doing, and her story after learning about the devastating brutal killing of Payzee's older sister, Banaz Mahmod in a so-called “honour-killing” in 2006. Banaz was a young woman with a huge appetite for life, laughter and kindness, and her death had far-reaching and long-lasting impacts for all those who knew and loved her, and also for the world at large. Payzee Mahmod is a survivor and activist tackling gender based violence. As a British Kurd with lived experience, she is a passionate advocate and campaigner raising awareness about harmful practices including child marriage, female genital mutilation, virginity testing and hymenoplasty. After being forced into a child marriage aged 16, Payzee lead the 3 year long campaign to change the legal age of marriage from 16 to 18, in England and Wales (Marriage and Civil Partnership (Minimum Age) Bill, 2023).Payzee now uses her platform to spread awareness on “honour” based abuse, child marriage and promoting the importance of gender inclusion and raising money for good causes.Just a little trigger warning, in this episode, we talk about some difficult topics including loss of a sibling, abusive relationships and FGM. There is also mention of suicide. So if you need to return to this episode at a later date, or skip it altogether, please do. Support the show

“The practice of female genital mutilation is so interwoven with the practice of child marriage. It's like the marketplace, the institution through which children are prepared for marriage” – Josephine Kamara, advocacy director of Purposeful. Today, Alan Kasujja hears the moving story of Khadijatu Barrie, a 26-year-old student at the University of Sierra Leone. She recently went public and explained how she refused to be forced into marriage when she was still a little girl. This comes a month after Sierra Leone's president Julius Maada Bio signed into law the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act of 2024. It means, anyone marrying a girl under the age of 18 will be jailed for at least 15 years or fined around $4,000 US, or both. Alan sits down with Patrick Analo from Save the Children as well as Josephine Kamara from Purposeful. He attempts to understand if the new law will change anything at all and if there's any connection between child marriage and female genital mutilation.
