Ladies and gentlemen, and whoever else is listening. Welcome back again to the show. This may be one of the most intriguing episodes in the last 5 years. Several months ago I interviewed author Charlene Paul, Episode 159, who wrote a book called Devotion Deliverance Deception, Keep Sweet - Pray and Obey, Isaac's Story about a young mans' life journey inside the FLDS Church and the world of polygamy and mind control. Today we have the subject of that book, Isaac Steed with us. Buckle up for a more in-depth look at what it was like growing up, and living a "happy normal childhood" inside the FLDS Church and the tightrope walking it took to survive under the total and absolute control of the then leader Warren Jeffs and what it was like to be banished in an instant for no apparent reason after literally devoting EVERYTHING to the group. #FLDSChurch #WarrenJeffs #ShortCreek #ColoradoCity #Hilldale #LostBoys #DevotionDeceptionDeliverance #Polygamy #ChildBrides #MasterDeceiver #KeepSweetPrayObey #KeepSweet #GodKnows #FollowTheProphet

This novel is set in the 1960s with a backdrop of The Beatles and other music of the time. It tells the story of Daisy Shoemaker who is 15 in 1964. She was born into a fundamentalist Mormon community on the US - Canada border. In a ceremony called Placement she is given as a teenage wife to a much older man. She finds this intolerable and runs away. The church official who makes the decisions is known as Bishop and he assures his followers that he has a direct line to God. Amazingly they believe him. It's a gripping and enraging read. It's fiction but events like the book describes are still happening today. The fundamentalist cult is vey much alive and well. There is a Netflix documentary about the group .. Keep Sweet : Pray and Obey.
My guest today is author of a new-ish book which takes us on a personal tour inside the FLDS church through one man's personal experience at the feet of Warren Jeffs, Charlene Paul. Issac's life is nothing short of astonishing! A shocking and mesmerizing story of faith, abuse, courage and freedom. It is well written with a blend of honesty, acceptance of the reality, genuine emotions and insight. Charlene tells of the struggles in the FLDS without embellishment or sensationalizing the story. Such an amazing story. Hey Humor Consumers, You won't believe this, or maybe you will...we actually FINALLY recorded our episode on the topic of "Procrastination." After a year and a half or more of putting it off, we finally did it. It was supposed to drop today. But, when Cathrine went to edit it and get it uploaded into our Podbean account, the audio file was garbage. The first seven minutes was ok, but nothing after that was usable. Sooooooo, you know what that means! It will take us a minimum of another year or more to redo it and get it out to you all. In the meantime, we had Keep Sweet Pray and Obey in the queue so here ya go. Ya, today's episode checks all the boxes of weird, hard, scary and stupid! You know what I mean? These Jeffs guys are total NUT BAGS! They are out there. We stumbled upon the doc and decided to bring it to you all. In case you haven't noticed, we are trying to do a documentary once a month because you seem to like them. BTW, if you didn't get a chance to listen to last week's episode about stuff we no longer can live without.......go back and give it a listen. About half way through Cathrine and I LOST IT and it's hilarious. I slipped up on a word that had two meanings and it sounded like I was talking about intimacy but I was really talking about something totally different. Anyway, we laugh anyway right? Back to the Jeffs. Today we are sharing... Who are the Jeffs? A review of Keep Sweet, Pray and Obey The Dangers of Cults Inspirational close: Romans 16:17-18 CTA: If you are looking for a spiritual connection RUN from NUT BAGS like the Jeffs and run to a good local church that has these three things: accountability, transparency and they welcome questioning. Tracy and Cathrine p.s. We love you all and hope you're loving the podcast. Please remember to like, share, comment in all the places. It does help us to be "found" by others looking for something to get their mind off of regular life by hearing us talk about regular life. ;0) Thank You to our amazing sponsors: Humor Contributors: Katie, Colleen, Ursula, Nancy, Kenny, Karren, Jeannine, Muffin, Dar, Courtney, Joan, Gayle, Carla and Linda. Thank you for your generous support. We're saving up for new microphones (that will be awesome) and down the road maybe an editor and some advertising. We are also looking into attending a conference for podcasters in Florida in January. Fun. After freeing herself from an early life in the Fundamentalist Church, Elissa reinvented herself and her career several times. Yet at the heart of all her work is her incredible storytelling abilities. Most recently, she appeared in the documentary, Keep Sweet: Pray & Obey, in which she shared a bit of her journey and healing. The production made it clear that Elissa's wisdom and poise are unrivaled, and that there was so much more to her story than four poignant episodes could illustrate. Interview released 6-18-22On the final episode of the Under The Banner Of Heaven Aftershow co-hosts Rebecca Bibliotheca and Steven Pynakker are excited to have on Hanna Seariac! This is the second time we taped this episode and Hanna explains why she asked for the first one to be pulled. Hanna also discusses her recent article she wrote about Brenda Lafferty for the Deseret News and talks about why she felt it was important that her story be told. We then talk about the final episode of the FX/Hulu limited series titled "Blood Atonement". Hanna gives us her take on the episode as well as the series overall. We discuss the way that the Mountain Meadows Massacre was portrayed as well as Brigham Young and the martydom of Joseph Smith. Hanna also defends Lindsay Hansen Park and Dustin Lance Black against the accusation that they are Anti-Mormon. She also addreses the criticism that "she aligns with those who attack the (LDS) faith". I also want to thank Jim Bennett, Benjamin Shaffer, and Lindsay Hansen Park for coming on Mormon Book Reviews to discuss the series. This episode is sponsored by BetterHelp. We're getting into a whole lot of mess with this one, so if you haven't listened to Part 1 of this story from earlier this week, you'll be mighty confused. Make sure to give it a listen before diving in here. Many people became aware of the horrors taking place within the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (if you were really in touch with God s/he'd have given you a better name) after watching Keep Sweet: Pray and Obey on Netflix. Our guest on today's show, Elissa Wall, had to live through them. Born into a polygamous family within Salt Lake City, Utah's FLDS—which is how we'll be referring to it from here on out— Wall was only 14 when church leaders orchestrated a marriage between the child and her 19-year-old cousin, Allen Steed. Unfortunately, such marriages were insanely frequent within the church, with girls as young as 12-years-old being groomed and forced to marry older men. Much of this is thanks to human trash can Warren Jeffs, president and prophet of the FLDS, who can also add convicted child rapist to his list of titles. At one point, Jeffs had 78 “wives,” 24 of whom were children. Now, he's serving life in prison, with no small help from Elissa Wall. Wall's autobiography is titled, Stolen Innocence: My Story of Growing Up in a Polygamous Sect, Becoming a Teenage Bride, and Breaking Free of Warren Jeffs. The book became a New York Times bestseller and is a fascinating but heart wrenching look into the truly fucked up world of Warren Jeffs. "Whatever the lord commands through his prophet is right, even if it seems wrong to our traditions. Your sacrifice will be what the lord tells you to do for the prophet..." Those are the words of Warren Jeffs, FLDS Prophet and master manipulator. TRANSCRIPT HERE For Psychocinematic's first foray into the documentary film, Steph discusses the Netflix documentary Keep Sweet Pray and Obey, with the inspiring (and multitasking) Merowyn Olaver, a nurse, writer, mental health & domestic violence advocate, breast cancer previvor, AND a mother as well. Steph and Merowyn discuss the psychology of religion, how it differs from that of cults or cult-like structures, and of childhood sexual abuse and trafficking. We reflect on how this is explored in the doco with regard to the Fundamentalist Church of the Latter Day Saints, whether it is conveyed respectfully to the survivors, and where it perhaps goes wrong. Merowyn, who has been a front line worker during the Covid pandemic, is an absolute delight and should have her own podcast! The Netflix series Keep Sweet: Pray and Obey is an in-depth look into the secretive polygamous sect of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (FLDS) and the rise of self-professed prophet Warren Jeffs. Why are all cult leaders old ugly white men? I think that's the real question we need to answer once we get through talking about this docu-series. The monstrosities these horrible people allowed happen are being exposed for the world to see and that's a good thing. Listen to Misty and Amarilys discuss the crazy, the tragedy, and the bad dental hygiene of the FLDS people. You won't regret it. Or heck, maybe you will. In this episode of You Can't Make This Up, we are talking about the Netflix documentary series "Keep Sweet: Pray and Obey" out now on Netflix. Host Rebecca Lavoie interviews director Rachel Dretzen.Through personal accounts, "Keep Sweet" reveals the incredible events leading to the 2011 life sentence of Warren Jeffs, the self-professed prophet of The Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. In a dramatic raid at the Yearning for Zion Ranch, which generated headlines around the world, law enforcement and Child Protective Service agents uncovered stunning evidence of systemic sexual, physical and psychological abuse.SPOILER ALERT! If you haven't watched "Keep Sweet: Pray and Obey" yet, make sure to add it to your watch-list before listening on.
As the self-proclaimed Prophet of the FLDS, a fundamentalist offshoot of the Mormon church, Warren Jeffs used the lure of eternal salvation to manipulate his followers. He arranged polygamous marriages and coerced families to offer their girls as child brides within the secretive sect, while authorities did little to stop him.The Netflix series “Keep Sweet: Pray and Obey'' paints a disturbing picture of the modern subjugation of women and the effects of tyrannical control dressed up as religious obedience. It presents many women who fled their underaged marriages and the outsiders who worked to expose the FLDS's illegal actions. OUR SPOILER FREE REVIEWS OF "KEEP SWEET: PRAY AND OBEY" BEGIN IN THE LAST 12 MINUTES OF THE EPISODE.In Crime of the Week: car accident.
