My guest today is Valerie Hamaker, a licensed mental health professional and co-host of the popular Latter Day Struggles podcast—a show focused on helping individuals, especially members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, navigate the emotional and spiritual challenges that arise from complex church history and theology. Recently, Valerie and her husband Nathan were summoned to appear before a membership disciplinary council—a process that often results in excommunication. Instead of participating, they chose to resign their membership. The way they've been treated by their local leaders—what I'd call a clear attempt at silencing—feels not only confusing and unsettling, but also symptomatic of deeper cracks within the structure and institution of the LDS Church. Ladies and gentlemen and whomever else is listening. Whether you're a longtime listener or tuning in for the first time, I truly appreciate your support. Your time and attention mean the world to me, and I don't take it for granted. If this show has added value to your life, please take a moment to like, share, subscribe, and leave a review—it helps more than you know! Today, my guests are the hosts of the popular Mormon podcast called At Last She Said It. Women of faith talking about complicated things. Please welcome Susan Hinckley and Cynthia Winward. After saying it in conversation a thousand times to each other, they decided it was time to finally say some of what they needed to hear out loud. They hope these podcast conversations can help women feel connected to one another. So often thoughts, feelings, and experiences—some particular to the complex lives of LDS women—remain unspoken or unacknowledged at church. Through conversations with each other and selected guests, they seek to amplify and explore a variety of voices, stories, ideas and experiences of women in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Through her work, Amy explores the long-standing power imbalances that have shaped societies for millennia. But this isn't just a history lesson—it's a call to action. Welcome back to the show, my beautiful listeners. I'm so excited to share today's conversation with you. My guest is Phelosha Collaros, the visionary founder of DepolarWise.com, a powerful community platform built with one purpose in mind: to bridge the ever-growing political and ideological divides that threaten to tear us apart—not just here in America, but across the globe. Phelosha's mission is about making connections, one person at a time, to foster understanding, compassion, and common ground where we so desperately need it. Phelosha's passion for this work comes from a deeply personal place. Her mother, born in Colombia, witnessed firsthand the devastating consequences of a polarized society. During the violent period known as La Violencia, her own community turned on each other with such brutal fervor that they were willing to kill Phelosha's grandfather simply because of his political beliefs. Over the course of nearly a decade, that civil war claimed more than 200,000 lives, leaving deep scars on the Colombian nation. While the example I just shared is extreme—and thank goodness, we're not there yet—it's a stark reminder of the dangers when division turns into dehumanization. And make no mistake, we are seeing alarming signs of that same toxic divide here in the U.S. over the past decade or so. If we're not careful, we could follow that same path. But here's the thing: we don't have to. The power is in our hands. To heal, to shift the narrative, and to stop the cycle of hate that we're trapped in, we need to get uncomfortable. We need to step outside our echo chambers and face the discomfort of truly learning about each other—especially about those who see the world differently than we do. It's a process, but it's a process that can begin today. So, I encourage you to listen closely, because this conversation offers hope and practical ways we can be part of the solution. The miracle of unity isn't as far off as it might seem—it just requires us to take the first step. Let's dive in. My guests today are Laney and Bridgette Casey. Last year I interviewed their parents, Matt and Celeste. Over three years ago Matt was diagnosed with an extremely rare illness called Neuroendocrine cancer. It almost took his life and so often so much of the attention, although well deserved, goes to the person suffering. Often times the family can sometimes get overlooked even as they are suffering along side the sick or injured one. This is Matt's story through THEIR eyes. The eyes of the children. Have your tissues handy. My guest today is 20 year veteran radio journalist Julie Rose, host of two insightful podcasts on BYU Radio; Top of Mind and the Uncomfy podcast. Several weeks ago I was invited to be guest on her Uncomfy podcast sharing a profound pivot in my own life that has helped change my perspectives on so many things. (Here is that episode - https://youtu.be/Q5RZVtV3ijk?si=DWxNIFyftUfWh-F5) Julie is such a great interviewer, having done more than 10,000 interviews, she was such a joy to talk to that I decided to have her on my show to share her story of how she got into this world of storytelling. I recently had the chance to sit down with my longtime friend, Supermascot Rocky, the iconic face (or should I say fur) of the Denver Nuggets, whom I've known for over 33 years. In a candid and heartwarming interview, Rocky (Kenn Solomon) finally reveals the secrets behind the mask after all these years. We've shared so many memories together, from thrilling courtside antics to behind-the-scenes moments that fans rarely get to see. Hearing him talk about his journey, how he brought joy to fans, and the stories that shaped his larger-than-life persona was nothing short of amazing. The bond we've built over three decades only deepened as he peeled back the layers of the character that has captured the hearts of so many. Especially the ins and outs of raising three young (not so much anymore) boys in the shadow of their cartoon dad and the massive effect it has had on their lives. #DenverNuggets #SuperMascotRocky #Rocky #OriginalJazzBear #JonAbsey #CharlesBarkley #MyThreeSons #DetroitPistonsHooper #JohnElway #DenverBroncos #MascotHallOfFame #CadeSolomon #DrakeSolomon
Welcome back to the show. Thank you for being here. My guest today is Kenny Wyland, a small business owner and real estate investor. This episode was originally designed to have two average American guys talking about why one of them loves Trump and one does not. For the sake of understanding either "side". Sadly my conservative Trump fan had scheduling conflicts and in the interest of time we had to move on without him. Stay tuned for a follow up with just him as soon as possible. I try to be as balanced as possible on this show. Kenny puts forth a decent and fairly conservative argument about why Donald Trump could be dangerous for democracy. The conversation may surprise you. And all of us ought to be very concerned. Welcome back to the program ya'll. On the show today is my queer daughter Eden Strader. She came out to us three years ago. The process was a serious growth challenge for us as her parents. We handled it a little bit right but mostly wrong. Not out of malice but ignorance. A lot of damage was done but we've learned how to love better and deeper. It was a rough time in our story but we now have a healthy relationship, loving her as she is and will continue to be. Ladies and gentlemen, and whoever else is listening. Welcome back again to the show. This may be one of the most intriguing episodes in the last 5 years. Today we have the subject of that book, Isaac Steed with us. Buckle up for a more in-depth look at what it was like growing up, and living a "happy normal childhood" inside the FLDS Church and the tightrope walking it took to survive under the total and absolute control of the then leader Warren Jeffs and what it was like to be banished in an instant for no apparent reason after literally devoting EVERYTHING to the group. #FLDSChurch #WarrenJeffs #ShortCreek #ColoradoCity #Hilldale #LostBoys #DevotionDeceptionDeliverance #Polygamy #ChildBrides #MasterDeceiver #KeepSweetPrayObey #KeepSweet #GodKnows #FollowTheProphet

My guest today is Amy Watkins Jensen, faithful member of the LDS Church, wife, mother, and creator of the IG account, Women on the Stand. This episode is primarily for members of the LDS Church but has implications in all religions and organizations. Why is this important? In a typical LDS Church meeting, for example only the Bishop and his counselors are seated on the stand behind the pulpit. Anyone visiting that ward (congregation) can look up and know who the leaders are. In the Oakland, CA Stake for the past decade, the women's organization leaders have been sitting on the stand during ward and stake meetings. Fair and balanced right? No problem. Back in October of 2023, a member of the churchs area authority for that region of the country decided having women leaders represented on the stand was a problem and put an end to this practice. This was an abosolute slap in the face to the women of the church on so many levels and it hurt. A lot. You see there was nothing broken here. This practice was benefiting thousands of people in these Bay Area wards yet some leader, not from the area, decided, this was just not how things were supposed to be done. Amy began her search for answers at the local level and turned up empty. Letters to the general church offices also seemed to have fallen on deaf ears for now, so she has created this community to spread the news and make some change. The Salt Lake Tribune ran an OpEd and here is their podcast about the story too. I'm sorry ladies that you have been getting a raw deal for like forever it seems and I may be a little late to the game but cannot unsee the imbalance. I call my brothers in the church to step up and push for better visibility for our sisters. They matter more than we have been showing. My guest today is Careshmeh French and a couple years ago, she lost her soul mate, best friend and husband. All who happened to have been the same amazing man. This loss has left her broken beyond anything she has ever experienced before. After a long and successful career as a high school coach and administrator, Mark was "sentenced" to prison by his local school board. He became the academy principal with the Central Utah Correctional Facility in Gunnison, Utah. Arriving at the "Island of Misfit Toys", he quickly realized a massive opportunity to truly help and correct inmates. He saw prison through the eyes of the inmates who are not the monsters we often think they are. They're more often than not, decent men. Your brothers, fathers, uncles and friends. During his eight-years inside he saw enrollment in the prison academy jump from 200 to nearly 1200 students and enacted, first hand, a mode of change that is more than possible in a severely broken system...if only someone at the top would listen. Welcome back to the second episode in my series for LDS (Mormon) parents of gay children. In part 1, Episode 155, Jake guided us through this first phase of his coming out journey as a 34 yo man to his parents a little over 4 months ago. On today's episode, we have an additional special guest, Sue Petersen, who was the Stake Relief Society president in the Elk Ridge Utah Stake for the past 5 years. Sue has a grown daughter who has been in a lesbian relationship for the past 7 years. She shares with us how she has navigated that path, the mistakes she made and the bridges she has built by following Christ's example. For those not familiar with the LDS church, the Relief Society is the womens organization within the church. In Elk Ridge there are 12 wards or congregations and Sue was the leader over all those. I want to say in the spirit of disclosure, we are still only getting Jake's perspective at this stage. We don't use his last name or call out who parents are out of respect for their privacy so please keep that in mind as you listen. Sue holds a support group for moms of gay children every month on the second Thursday, 7-9pm. Welcome back to the program Parrish The Thought listeners. Today's episode is the first in a short series I'm doing for LDS parents specifically and also applies to parents of all faiths. My guest and new friend, Jake, is 34 and has recently come out to his LDS parents. Having an already strained relationship for the past 15 years has been hard enough so one can imagine how this news was received. Jake takes us step by agonizing step through the road trip home to tell his family he is gay. The reactions aren't what he was hoping for and he shares with me the dark places of his mind he's gone to prior to coming out and since. No one should ever have to feel suicide is an answer. In all fairness to his parents, this is a surprise and shock to them. He's had a lifetime to process his orientation. It's new for them and only time will tell how the family dynamic will play out. Parents. We can and must do better at loving our children, no matter their age. Especially Christian parents. Christ asks us to "love our neighbor." He didn't say only love thy neighbor if they look, think, act, live, like us and do as we say. Either we follow Christ, or we do not. #LoveThyNeighbor #GayMormon #MomDadImGay #ThemGays #ComingOut #Suicide #LGBTQ #MormonStories #ItsWhoIAm #IDidntChooseThis #DreamsOfAParent #MourningTheLoss #IRespectMyParents #Disowned #IdahoFalls

My guests today are Matt and Celeste Casey. A little over 2 years ago, a serious thing happened to him. His golf game started to suffer when he was losing to his friend Fuji. Real problems right. Welcome back all you great and marvelous listeners. On the program today is my friend Ken Roberts. The REAL Ken Roberts. Ken is currently running for one of the open seats on the Lehi, Utah city council. He stopped by the international offices of the Parrish The Thought Podcast to share with us why he is also, like last week's Payson city guest, running for the position. Ken has a great personal philosophy of making things better wherever you are. He has raised his children in Lehi and loves giving back to his community on many levels. Voting is by 8pm November 21st. Details here. https://www.lehi-ut.gov/government/elections/ Ken's Campaign Website https://www.kenrobertsforlehi.com/ Contact Ken Today - KenForLehiCityCouncil@gmail.com or call/text (801)372-1177 #LehiCity #LehiCityUtah #UtahCountyCities #KenForLehiCity #VoteKenRoberts #KenRobertsForLehi #VoteLocalUtah #BirdLaunchers #RunForCityCouncil #ThosePeople #NIMBY #BeInvolved #GetInvolved #BeTheChange #Heart2Home #FoodAndCareCoalition
Welcome back to the program everyone and whomever else is listening. My guest today is Lacee Smith. She is currently running for one of the open seats on the Payson, Utah city council. With local elections just a week or so away, we're talking about why she is passionate about running and why it's important for you to exercise your voting rights. In the past, only a small percentage of eligible city voters turned out. People are losing faith in and disillusioned with the governmental process and fearful of a percieved “good ole boys” club mentality where decsions are made and money is spent without the approval of the citizens. She wants to bring a whole new set of eyes to the city which will foster a more transparent relationship between the residents and their government. Love her or hate her, you'll always know where she stands on the issues. Hello Parrish the Thoughters. Yes that is a word and you are my groupies. Enjoy your place in the club. My guest today for the fourth time is my friend Kris Kristensen. For those that are joining us for the first time or if it's been a minute, three years ago, Kris was diagnosed with stage 4 Chondrosarcoma, an aggressive bone cancer in his pelvis and was literally weeks from the disease taking his life. To save him, doctors performed a grueling surgery called a Pelvectomy. Yes it's as harrowing as it sounds. The entire left side of his pelvis had to be amputated and in the process he lost a perfectly good left leg. Needless to say his life was forever changed and this interview is part 4 in a series of life check-ins to see how he is often winning the battle to get his life back to a somewhat normal state and also a deep dive into the darkest recesses of his soul where he often ends up while trying to make sense of the why behind this new journey. He tells me that dying would have been easy. Living is the hardest part. Below are links to the previous three episodes of his journey. Interview #3 - The doctors took my leg and now my career won't have me back...yet. Interview #2 - 9 months with my new leg and an MBA in life. Interview #1 - I complained and it saved my life. This episode is a little disturbing and enlightening. My guest today is 19-year old Camilla Cloward, founder of the non-profit organization that raises awareness to the world's number one growing criminal enterprise, human trafficking, Giving A Voice. Her story is one that no child or human should ever have to endure yet out of the horrific darkness of repeated sexual assaults starting at age 14, leading into drug addiction and a suicide attempt came the passion not be a victim and to help other young people never have to travel the road she has. Camilla also drops a huge bomb with the recent discovery and betrayal by someone very close to her and her cause. It's beyond heartbreaking however she will turn this into currency. Just you watch.
