Over the years, Talk Travel Asia has regularly explored the topic of Responsible Travel and how to have a positive impact while exploring. After all, we need to preserve the places we visit in order to be able to enjoy them in the future, and treat local communities with respect along the way. We’ve looked at the work of Andaman Discoveries, discussed Overtourism, learned about the Living Irrawaddy Project, chatted with the good people at Friends International, and many more. Today we’ll chat with Mary Storrie who has started a charity which empowers Sri Lankan women to drive tuk tuks, earning much needed funds and slowly changing cultural gender norms.

Join Tom and Ross as they speak to Kirsten Wynn, a Friends International worker in London and long time friend of the WBC fellowship. Kirsten shares some of the positives, and difficulties of this time and points for prayer.
Psalm 72:12-14 “For He will deliver the needy who cry out, the afflicted who have no one to help. He will take pity on the weak and the needy and save them from death. He will rescue them from oppression and violence for precious is their blood in His sight.” Let your Prayer Focus be towards the most vulnerable communities and those working to help and support them during this pandemic. Pray for homeless people who can quite often have additional physical and mental health problems. Pray for social workers and those in charities in and around Leeds like The Crypt, The Lighthouse and Caring for Life who are offering extra support at this time. Pray for refugees and asylum seekers, many of them are already traumatised by situations they have fled in their own countries. Pray for Christians working for Solace and similar agencies who are offering counselling and care via digital media during the COVID-19 outbreak. Ask God to help the many migrant workers who have been laid off work but can't go home. Some have fallen into poverty and homelessness. Pray for people working for Social Services, Department for Employment and other public services trying to quickly get emergency financial help out. Pray for the many volunteers working in Food Banks who are trying hard to keep up with the increased need for their help from those who are struggling financially. May they give out love, hope and encouragement along with the food. There are also thousands of international students in the UK who can't go home and who are worried about their own families overseas. Pray for local churches, student groups and organisations who minister to them. Organisations like the International Students Club within our Leeds based Universities, UCCF and Friends International. The next time you're out shopping why not buy an extra non-perishable item or two and put it in the food bank collection box which you'll find at many supermarkets. Let your Worship Focus be to cry out a Hallelujah to Jesus recognising that He has overcome the world!

Are "voluntourists" - foreigners coming to do well-meaning voluntary work - actually doing more harm than good at developing world orphanages?Manuela Saragosa speaks to one who says she saw the light. Pippa Biddle travelled to Tanzania to help do construction work at an orphanage. But she soon realised that the shoddy work she and her fellow American students were doing was creating more work for the people they were supposedly helping, and the whole project was really designed for their own benefit. But the harm goes further than that, as James Sutherland, who works in Cambodia for the child welfare organisation Friends International, explains. Voluntourism creates a demand for an industry of fake orphanages trafficking in children who are not even orphans.(Picture: American woman with two African children; Credit: MShep2/Getty Images)
Firstly, Baiba from Friends International talks about their work among students in the Canterbury area and Julian unpacks the power of the Holy Spirit in the life of Jesus.
On this episode of Talk Travel Asia podcast, we discuss the dangers and benefits of "voluntourism" (doing volunteer work while on holiday), discussing our firsthand experiences, particularly in Thailand and Cambodia, and then talking with James Sutherland of Friends-International, a Cambodia-based organization whose work with underprivileged communities, particularly children, we have long admired.
