Fresh from my trip to Kauai, I am talking this week about the importance of taking the Aloha Pledge and my experience with a recent Beach cleanup. The Aloha Pledge was initiated as a collaborative effort to promote responsible tourism and environmental stewardship in Hawaii. It emerged from the broader mission of Kanu Hawaii, an organization founded in 2006 with the aim of fostering a connection to the land ('āina), Native Hawaiian culture, and sustainable local practices. Kanu Hawaii started as a grassroots movement focusing on various community-centric initiatives. Over the years, the organization has launched several campaigns to enhance civic engagement, food sustainability, and energy independence, always rooted in the values of aloha and kuleana (responsibility). In 2021, Kanu Hawaii introduced the "Pledge To Our Keiki" in partnership with the Hawaii Department of Education, aimed at instilling a sense of environmental responsibility in students across all public and charter schools in Hawaii. Voluntourism is an enticing form of travel: exotic locales, cultural immersion, serving needy populations with your skills – all wrapped up in your four weeks' annual leave. Not so fast. Before packing your passport and mosquito net tune in to The Medical Republic podcast to hear from two guests who might make you reconsider. Dr Andrew Browning has been doing fistula surgery in Africa through the Barbara May Foundation for around 25 years. He says its life changing for patients who start to live normal lives again after the deeply distressing injury caused by obstructed labour. However, Dr Browning says a donation that funds local health workers may better support outcomes than a short-term volunteering stint. “When you're there for a short term the people don't know you, you don't know them. You don't know the culture, you don't know the way things work or don't work. “The people there are very polite, very long suffering and will put up with you for the time that you're there. Then as soon as you leave, they just go back to their normal ways,” Dr Browning says. But if you're still keen Dr. Browning said there are some spaces for shorter term volunteers if you have specialised in obstetrics, gynecology or midwifery. “Around 40% of these girls have been suicidal or attempted suicide with this injury, a hundred percent of them are depressed. And when you treat them they just turn back to be normal, happy citizens,” Dr Browning said. It's the kind of heroic work that many doctors dream of, says rheumatologist Dr Rob Baume. After a bout of professional burn out, Dr Baume considered medical voluntourism but ended up not buying a plane ticket after all. “When I did a bit of more research, I found that unless you have a specific specialties such as anesthetist or an obstetrician, you need to sign up for nine months. The other part of the equation is that I don't speak the language. Then there's also the cost, the health risks and the risk to your life,” he said. Instead of volunteering himself, Dr. Baume has just raised $1 million for healthcare in developing nations through his charity, Twice the Doctor. Dr Baume said that research by Dr Greg Lewis shows that if a doctor wants to make maximum impact on the world, it doesn't matter which specialisation they do. “What matters is that you give a fair bit of your income to third world causes,” Dr Baume said. We've all heard of people, even friends or acquaintances who have gone off for a few weeks to build a school, or taught English in far-flung places, very often with the good intentions to bring a positive change. This form of volunteer work is more commonly known as voluntourism—the merging of travel and voluntary work, as part of the products offered by the travel market. Despite the good intentions of travellers to bring about positive change to communities, it is often not well channelled. Besides overall concerns about the impact that such short-term trips by unskilled volunteers have on the welfare of children and the entire communities, some forms of voluntourism and “social trips” pose additional risks to the safety and protection of children. In this episode of Ending The Silence we delve into the world of voluntourism, why it is harmful to children, and how it increases the risk of child sexual exploitation and abuse? Together with ECPAT member organisations from Sri Lanka and Indonesia, we examine the impacts and risks of unregulated tourism on children, and share what needs to be done to protect children as part of responsible and sustainable tourism development. Voluntourism is the practice of volunteering one's labour to a charitable cause in a developing country, in return for a soul-cleansing, perspective-changing, CV-bolstering experience. Perhaps a bit cynical? Whilst it could be a mutually beneficial redistribution of wealth from the developed world to the developing, voluntourism harbours a dark and exploitative underworld. Alix Seyfarth was working for a tech company in Boston when a typhoon hit the Philippines and she decided to go volunteer and help to rebuild local communities that were devastated. She didn't realize it would change her life forever. That was six years ago, and Alix is still working in the disaster relief field. Alix spent 14 months in the Philippines, living in conditions without electricity, WiFi, or running water. I talk with Alison Van Dusen, a backcountry park ranger who has worked in 20 U.S. National Parks over the last 28 years.  In between seasonal work, she lives as a nomad and travels around the world – often doing volunteer service work. She has been to at least 30 countries on six continents, and even spent 2 summers working in the South Pole.Alison shares what sparked her love of travel, how she became a park ranger, and why she started traveling internationally. Are "voluntourists" - foreigners coming to do well-meaning voluntary work - actually doing more harm than good at developing world orphanages?Manuela Saragosa speaks to one who says she saw the light. Pippa Biddle travelled to Tanzania to help do construction work at an orphanage. But she soon realised that the shoddy work she and her fellow American students were doing was creating more work for the people they were supposedly helping, and the whole project was really designed for their own benefit.But the harm goes further than that, as James Sutherland, who works in Cambodia for the child welfare organisation Friends International, explains. In this episode I talk with Seattle-based osteopath Cathy Lindsay. Her lifelong love of nature and being outdoors eventually led her to explore the world as an adult. After multiple international trips to places like Grand Cayman, Bali, India and Peru, Cathy began shifting her travel focus. She now takes annual service trips – typically helping on environmental or animal research projects. Her service expeditions have included counting butterflies in North Vietnam, studying juvenile turtles in the Bahamas and Costa Rica, and studying wolves and bison in Alberta, Canada. She also recently traveled to Thailand to work in elephant and dog sanctuaries, and ended up providing support to the local community following a devastating flood. Cathy shares amazing stories about her adventures in learning and helping – showing us that travel with purpose is not only important, but deeply rewarding. I interview Jessica Hansen, Global Engagement Manager for Kiva (the world's largest microfinance non-profit) and a lifelong traveler who is deeply committed to doing good in the world. It is difficult to know what impact our jet-setting has, and how much money is actually going into the local economy rather than benefiting other parts of the tourism industry. It's also hard to know which voluntourism organizations are actually helping, versus those that (while well-intentioned) are actually hurting people or environment they seek to serve. Jessica talks about what to look for when seeking to do good while traveling, what are red flags, and which organizations are doing incredible work in regards to social impact travel.
