Jeff Beadle of Manhattan talks about their Unified Forecasting Method; how the hybrid approach is different; & the benefits to supply chain planning. IN THIS EPISODE WE DISCUSS: [06.28] An introduction to Jeff, his role at Manhattan, and how, as a physicist coming from a job at the “applied chaos lab,” he found his way to supply chain. “As a data scientist, there's not a better sandbox than supply chain – and especially at Manhattan, given the breadth of solutions we have across the space.” [09.10] Why unification is key to both Manhattan's approach to helping clients and to improving the industry; and its importance in forecasting. “By unifying demand forecasting methods into a single composite model, it elevates capability, robustness, adaptability, and accuracy – and therefore all of the optimization of supply chain processes, and applications that are consuming that output.” [12.32] An overview of UFM, how its hybrid forecasting approach differs from more traditional statistical models and standalone machine learning models, and why Manhattan have combined these approaches into one model. “Hybrid forecasting combines statistical time series models with machine learning algorithms offering a uniquely powerful and balanced approach to demand forecasting.” [17.38] The challenges with machine learning, and the benefits that UFMs hybrid approach brings to supply chain planning. “There are still shortcomings to machine learning, and high failure rates… Machine learning builds knowledge strictly from the data it observes. So if it has an incomplete aspect of the data model… it can lead to misleading results.” [23.56] How UFM allows organizations to make decisions that have benefits across all business areas. “That combined hybrid approach takes on an inside-out, outside-in demand planning approach… this provides a very adaptive, accurate mechanism… and that impacts all cross-functional processes.” [27.07] An overview of how UFM continuously learns and updates its forecasts in real-time. [30.07] The low-management nature of UFM, and how that frees up teams to take on the more strategic and creative work. “It's very autonomous and hands-free – it doesn't require special staffing or oversight.” [33.30] The ideal client for Manhattan's UFM. “The better plans and forecasts we have, the less we have to react through execution systems – that's sub-optimal. Joel GrauUst-Luga es un puerto muy importante para los intereses rusos: por los fertilizantes destinados a mercados de Latam y por la exportación de carbón a India, China y otros destinos, explica Joel Grau, consejero delegado de CFC Maritime y profesor de shipping en Deusto y UFM. Joel GrauEl miércoles 17 de enero fue el primer día en el que no transitó ningún barco de LNG de gas en el mar Rojo: "La situación está bajo control de los hutíes": lo que empezó siendo una disuasión en la flota mercante se ha ampliado a otros sectores, como el crudo ruso. Así lo explica Joel Grau, consejero delegado de CFC Maritime y profesor de shipping en Deusto y UFM. "Los hutíes están atacando a todo lo que se cruza por sus objetivos y sus parámetros de alcance": desviaciones tanto de carga como de tonelaje. China ante la crisis del mar Rojo: sus navieras empezaron transitando, pero acabaron desviando sus barcos. "Desde el punto de vista europeo es exportación de inflación", sostiene Grau. Los intereses de Rusia y China deberían haber estado salvaguardados por los hutíes, como en las primeras semanas, pero tras el error de cálculo del crudo ruso, ahora "tiene sentido que le den vía libre". Visita http://www.newmedia.ufm.edu KEC Series es un evento creado en 2021 por la Facultad de Ciencias Económicas (FCE), de la Universidad Francisco Marroquín (UFM), que busca acercar a los emprendedores más experimentados a los alumnos y al público en general. En esta ocasión la emprendedora invitada fue Lizzie Britz, Directora de Startups Legalsa. Startups Legalsa, es una empresa que se dedica a facilitar los procesos iniciales de nuevos emprendimientos, brindando las herramientas necesarias para que los empresarios sepan qué decisiones tomar en cuanto a términos legales principalmente. Esta conferencia abordó los principales aspectos legales que toda empresa debe conocer, cómo los tipos de sociedades que existen, los contratos que deben celebrarse, los permisos que se deben tomar en cuenta y los impuestos, entre otros factores. “Guiamos y acompañamos a las nuevas empresas en sus procesos legales, para hacerlos menos tediosos”. — Lizzie Britz. Existen 3 tipos de contratos básicos que los emprendedores deben manejar para su propia protección, el primero es el contrato de no competencia, éste obliga a los empleados a no crear una empresa que se dedique a lo mismo que la empresa en la que labora, mientras esté contratado por la misma. El segundo es el contrato de confidencialidad, éste resguarda la información más importante de las empresas, como los secretos profesionales y la propiedad intelectual, se pueden celebrar con los profesionales que prestan servicios a la empresa, como empresas contables o legales, ya que por la naturaleza de la transacción hay que darles cierta información y así se les obliga a no divulgarla. El tercer contrato es el de cesión de derechos, este es usado para prestar derechos como el de la imagen; por ejemplo, ceder el logo de la empresa por si el distribuidor necesita colocarlo en una unidad móvil o en cierta publicidad. Otro aspecto importante son los permisos que se deben obtener, entre ellos encontramos permisos municipales, que dependiendo del tipo de empresa podrían regular el sonido o el hecho de vender sobre vías públicas, el estudio de impacto ambiental es un permiso que concede el Ministerio de Salud Pública, así como la licencia y registro sanitario. “Podemos registrar, colores, logos, texturas, formas, sonidos, animaciones e incluso olores caracterísiticos que tenga nuestra marca”. — Lizzie Britz. Lizzie opina que aunque no todos los empresarios están de acuerdo con pagar impuestos, deben hacerlo para generar confianza en sus clientes. Entre los impuestos más importantes se encuentran el Impuesto Sobre la Renta (ISR) y el Impuesto al Valor Agregado (IVA). La conferencista también recomienda que se entregue factura siempre, ya que cada vez hay más conciencia fiscal y más control por parte de las autoridades. Visita https://cine.ufm.edu/ El 14 de abril del 2021 el editor y montajista guatemalteco Koki Ortega y Diego Yhama, colorista de Colombia, participaron en el evento Artista Emprendedor UFM: El proceso artístico del montaje y la colorización junto a Gabriella Villatoro, cineasta y mentora de la Escuela de Cine y Artes Visuales, UFM. Durante el conversatorio Koki y Diego comentaron acerca del rol de la postproducción cinematográfica, las distintas experiencias y desafíos con los que se han enfrentado en su carrera, al igual de su pasión por este rol. Entendí que el montaje y la edición era el lugar para poder acercarse a todos los aspectos de un relato, desde lo estético a lo narrativo porque es allí donde todo el rodaje se junta. Eso despertó mi necesidad de estar allí”. - Koki Ortega El evento contó con la proyección de obras en las que los invitados habían trabajado en el área de posproducción. Koki Ortega presentó “La Parka” (2013) un cortometraje documental mexicano dirigido por Gabriel Sierra en el cual Koki fue montajista. Además, comentó de su experiencia colaborando con el director y el equipo detrás de esta obra que fue nominada a los premios Óscar en el 2015. “El acercamiento de edición no empezó al concluir el rodaje como se le suele otorgar y creo que eso es una de las grandes virtudes que tiene este documental que estaba desde antes y que me permitió sentir y conocer el relato…Había claridad en Gabriel, en mi y en el equipo que permitía avanzar y seguir evolucionando”. – Koki Ortega Diego Yhamá converso del thriller “La Inquilina”, un cortometraje en el cual cuenta con créditos como colorista y que fue trabajado por realizadores en tres ciudades distintas: Hollywood, México y Bogotá por medio de DaVinci Resolve Studio. Su experiencia en este proyecto audiovisual sirvió como ejemplo para hablar de las oportunidades en con las nuevas tecnologías. “La postproducción en la nube representa miles de ventajas para todos porque no necesito una computadora de $5,000 para poder editar o hacer color. Simplemente entró a la nube por cualquier computador y editó mi proyecto…la tecnología ya no va ser un impedimento”. – Diego Yhamá También comentó de la libertad creativa que un colorista tiene en la toma de decisiones de una obra, y cómo esto impacta su acercamiento al proceso. “Nuestra libertad creativa es poder aportar sentimiento a la historia, y reforzar emociones…está en base a proponer, pero no basado en lo que nosotros queramos sino en en la historia y en lo que los creadores quieren.
