The patchwork nature of America's public safety net has evolved over centuries, shaped by political winds and changing views on poverty. Understanding this complicated history may help shed light on the core tensions that continue to define debates about who deserves assistance and how it should be provided. In a paper in the Journal of Economic Perspectives, author Christopher Howard explored how programs targeted at people with low incomes expanded from meager, local support in colonial times to the large-scale programs of today. He draws a distinction between two parallel systems: means-tested programs targeted specifically at low-income Americans and inclusive social insurance programs available to citizens across income levels.  Howard recently spoke with Tyler Smith about the surprising political durability of some targeted programs, the dramatic success of Social Security in reducing elderly poverty, and the ongoing gaps in the public safety net that leave many Americans vulnerable.

Christopher Howard is a golf professional based out of Las Vegas Golf Club. He works with every level of player, from beginner to consulting with tour players. In 20 years of teaching, he claims that there isn't a swing he hasn't seen. When Chris isn't posting instructions or analyzing his students' swings online for his 25,000 Instagram followers (chowardgolf), you can find him touring all over the world, or teaching private lessons in his golf schools. Over the last 7 years, he's hosted more than 650 golf schools in 5 different countries and 200 cities. That's a ton of frequent flier miles, and a lot of golfers who are willing to pay for the Teaching Pro from Las Vegas. Alzheimer's Allies: Building BIPOC Community Support. In Alzheimer's care, BIPOC communities have unique challenges that demand dedicated allies. As we explore the impact of Alzheimer's on different cultural groups, it becomes evident that BIPOC individuals are disproportionately affected by the disease. Research indicates that certain minority populations, including African Americans and Hispanics, face a higher risk of developing Alzheimer's compared to the general population. The why behind this heightened susceptibility is multifaceted, involving a complex interplay of genetic, environmental, and social factors. Building support within BIPOC communities becomes crucial in addressing this disparity. Our podcast conversation, "Alzheimer's Allies: Building BIPOC Community Support," explores the stories and strategies of those actively working to understand, support, and uplift individuals within these communities affected by Alzheimer's. By shedding light on the demographic most affected and exploring the unique challenges faced by minorities, we aim to foster a deeper understanding and inspire collaborative efforts toward building a more inclusive support network. Our guest is Dr. Christopher Howard, a neuropsychologist specializing in communities of color. He utilizes cultural community outreach such as health awareness events in barbershops and churches. In the United States, this responsibility belongs not only to governments, but also to charities, businesses, individuals, and family members. Their combined efforts generate a social safety net.  In Who Cares: The Social Safety Net in America (Oxford UP, 2022), Christopher Howard offers the first comprehensive map of the US social safety net. He chronicles how different parts of American society talk about poverty-related needs. And he shows what Americans do to provide basic levels of income, food, housing, medical care, and daily care. Although the US social safety net is extensive, major gaps remain, particularly impacting Blacks, Hispanics, and individuals who are not employed full-time. Drawing heavily upon evidence from the years right before the COVID-19 pandemic, Howard demonstrates that these problems persist even when the economy seems healthy. Societies are often judged by how they treat their most vulnerable members: the poor and near poor. TheEverydayLifeBalanceShow|Transform Your Life!|Weekly Interviews and Insights on Life Balance and Harmony With Bestselling A

................................. FULL TRANSCRIPT ................................. Welcome to part 5 of the Building Self-Love For Perfectionists Series.  Hi, I'm Pascale Gibon, and this is episode 241 of the Everyday Life Balance Show. We have covered four obstacles to self-love for perfectionists to date, and here is a reminder: The 1st obstacle to loving yourself is a negative self-image. The 2nd obstacle to loving yourself is the reluctance to understand yourself at a deeper level to grow in awareness of who you are.  The 3rd obstacle to loving yourself is the wrong view and belief that self-love is egotistical or selfish. The 4th obstacle to loving yourself is low self-esteem or self-worth. The 5th obstacle to loving yourself, which I will cover in this episode, is the fear of rejection. Sometimes perfectionism can come from self-doubt. You are afraid of making mistakes because you doubt yourself and lack confidence. Wendy's story was that she became a perfectionist because she failed her GCSE, which decreased her confidence, increased her self-doubt and shattered her self-esteem.  With this sense of failure, believing that she failed miserably and was not good enough, Wendy promised herself to do things perfectly at the cost of losing her true power. In the case of Wendy, the fear of rejection translates as developing the belief that you are a misfit or not intelligent enough if you fail your exams. Perfectionism can come, also from a desire to please others like your parents. Perhaps they expect a lot from you. They have high expectations, and if you do not meet their expectations, you feel that you failed them. If you are a people pleaser, this will resonate with you. And this could be your story. As a result, you adopt a false image of yourself and pretend to be someone else to please them. However, deep in your heart, you are unhappy. There is another consequence to trying very hard to meet other people, like your parents, expectations so that they love you, accept and respect you. In your eyes, you believe that if you do not act in a way they are pleased with, they will love you less. Perfectionists are not very good at receiving criticism. That is the case because, in their mind, they try very hard. However, they fail to see that perfectionism stops them from getting their desired results since they struggle with good enough.  It's time to change this perception. Instead of this labyrinth of suffering, it is necessary to adapt to a different way of thinking and behaving. Start to increase your ability to respond in a way that you can progress and come out of this self-torturing pattern. As you know, this series is about empowering individuals who tend to be perfectionists so that they shine their true light confidently and get inner peace.  Since everything is energy, the opposite of the fear of rejection is self-acceptance. Therefore in terms of building self-love, you need to accept yourself more: I had a breakthrough when I did an exercise years ago with Christopher Howard. Following this exercise, the insight I got was to accept myself just the way I am. This insight helped me grow in self-love and acceptance. Mindfulness, whereby you accept what is, is a great way to embrace yourself more. Growing self-awareness to make better choices and get better results is another way to accept yourself more. Get to know yourself more to increase your self-acceptance and do you. Self-love is self-understanding. Grow in compassion for yourself. Compassion means sympathy, kindness, and tender-heartedness, and you deserve it. I hope you enjoyed today's episode.  Remember that now is your time to transform your life one step at a time. I want to end this episode with a quote from Bill Gove: “If I want to be free, I've got to be me. Not the me you think I should be, not the me I think my wife thinks I should be, not the me I think my kids think I should be. If I want to be free, I've got to be me so I better know who me is.” I love this quote. I look forward to connecting with you next Monday.
