Many businesses are facing an uncertain economic future and will be looking to their accountants/business advisors/bookkeepers to give them advice as to what the future holds for them.  The key to this advice is for accountants to have the confidence and ability to offer “Predictive Accounting Services” so that their clients have an awareness of the financial implications of the decisions that they are now making. Advent 21: Mary Did You Know?

"Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us). When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife, but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus." Matthew 1:18-25The Time of FulfillmentIt is finally happening. In our journey through the Bible looking forward to Jesus, we are finally stepping over into the New Testament. These last 5 days we are going to be looking at the beginning of each gospel account in preparation for Christmas. When you read through Matthew’s version of the story you can’t help but be impressed by how much of the Old Testament he quotes when referring to the events surrounding Jesus’ birth. Remember, Matthew was Jewish and was writing to a predominantly Jewish audience, so it makes a lot of sense that he would remind them of the Old Testament prophecies. The most exciting part of this being the fact that all of those promises that God made to his people are finally coming true. What an amazing privilege that we have to see it all playing out in front of us.The Righteous FiancéThe first thing we need to remember here is that engagement worked a little differently in the New Testament time period than it does today. When we see that Joseph and Mary are engaged we need to realize that this was a legal agreement that required an actual divorce in order to break up. It was a way more serious commitment back in those days.As the narrative unfolds we find out that Mary is pregnant and that it isn’t Joseph’s baby. If he wanted to, Joseph could have taken her in front of the courts and had her severely punished. However, he is a righteous man. He seems to really love and care for her. Let’s not let it go unnoticed that even before God reveals to him the reality of the situation, when he still thinks that he has been betrayed by Mary, he planned on showing her grace. The Forgotten ProphecyWhile Joseph was thinking about what to do with Mary, God sent an angel to him to give him instructions. Now to be honest we know less about this vision than we do about Mary’s angelic visit in Luke 1. Here, all we know is that an angel of the Lord appears to Joseph in a dream telling him about what’s going on with Mary. What he tells him is unbelievable and humanly impossible. He tells him that there is no earthly father for her baby. “That which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit”. What?! This is such an unbelievable message that it required an angelic messenger to make it believable. In Luke’s account, we get to see Mary’s side of it. Let’s be honest, Mary’s surprise would have to be 1,000 times more surprising than Joseph’s… since we’re actually talking about a baby inside her body. But should it really be a surprise...Full Article Here:https://www.swoutfitters.com/resource/advent-21-mary-did-you-know/

La Prensa San Diego recently released an article detailing how San Diego County law enforcement and fire agencies have secretly run a local committee without public knowledge that has spent at least $100 million on armored vehicles, facial recognition technology, license plate readers, drones, riot gear, and other security equipment. Art Castañares (publisher/editor-at-large of La Prensa) joined us to discuss how the San Diego Urban Area Working Group (comprised of a police or fire department representative from each of the 18 cities in the county) has received and disbursed funds from federal grants given by DHS since around 2008, all without public knowledge and odd city council votes. According to La Prensa, "When the UAWG was created in 2008, the group deemed itself exempt from the California Public Records Act (CPRA), the state law which declares that “access to information concerning the conduct of the people's business is a fundamental and necessary right of every person in this state.”. "Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the great and awesome day of the LORD comes. And he will turn the hearts of fathers to their children and the hearts of children to their fathers, lest I come and strike the land with a decree of utter destruction.” Malachi 4:5-6 The Ultimate CliffhangerWhen I was growing up there were several TV shows that our family would watch together. You younger readers might not understand this, but it used to be that there were only a couple of TV networks and it seemed like everybody watched them. And there was no recording (unless you somehow figured out how to program your VCR) and no binging. You knew when your show would come on and you were home for it. The best shows were the ones that kept a continuous story going from week to week and they would build up to the end of the season. For weeks they would advertise the “season finale” and you couldn’t miss it. Inevitably at the end of the last show of the season, there would be a huge turn of events and you’d be left in suspense, not knowing how it would turn out. They had you. Now you’d have to wait until the next season before you could finally get the answer. So why are we talking about this? Well, there is a sense in which this is what God did to his people with the Old Testament. When the Old Testament ends you have this amazing promise of God’s restored kingdom. Our passage for today contains the last 2 sentences of the Old Testament, but in order to understand the context let’s look at the verses that come right before this. The Great Day of the LordIt’s important to remember that Malachi is writing to a group of Jews who had recently come back to their homeland. You see God’s people had turned away from him so he sent foreign rulers to take them into captivity. But now they were returning. Look at the amazing message of hope that Malachi gives to them:“For behold, the day is coming, burning like an oven, when all the arrogant and all evildoers will be stubble. The day that is coming shall set them ablaze, says the LORD of hosts, so that it will leave them neither root nor branch. But for you who fear my name, the sun of righteousness shall rise with healing in its wings. You shall go out leaping like calves from the stall. And you shall tread down the wicked, for they will be ashes under the soles of your feet, on the day when I act, says the LORD of hosts." Malachi 4:1-3This is a proclamation of victory for God and for his people. Those who do evil will be judged and those who love the Lord will rejoice. It’s a really beautiful picture. I can only imagine the joy and the hope that God’s people would have received from this. It is truly “great and awesome”.But when was it supposed to happen? That’s what’s crazy, they don’t know. God doesn’t tell them when this is going to happen. Instead, he gives them a sign so that will know when it does happen. That’s where our text for today comes in. He tells them that Elijah the prophet is going to come and he will turn the hearts of God’s people back to him. This is confusing for several reasons. First, Elijah has been gone for over 400 years. And secondly, these are the last recorded words of the Old Testament. After this God stops speaking to his people for 400 years. All they know is that they need to be on the lookout for someone like Elijah.Elijah: Take 2If you aren’t super familiar with the Old Testament, the thing you need to know about the OT prophets is that they were most definitely outliers. These were guys that didn’t care at all about social norms and cared only about being obedient to God...Read the Full Article Here:https://www.swoutfitters.com/resource/advent-20-another-elijah/

4 RULES OF GUN SAFETY As Daniel Shaw instructs them. Be relentlessly aware of your muzzle ensuring it is always pointed in the relative safest direction. Keep your finger off the trigger and outside of the trigger guard until you are on target and have made the conscious decision to fire. Keep the weapon on safe until you are on target and have made the conscious decision to fire. Be certain of your target and that its foreground and background remain clear. 1:55 VF says, “I prioritize what I teach, by what I think is important through my experiences. Having seen a lot of violence and having been around a lot of really poor gun handlers in violent situations…[T]here were a lot of things that I picked up on that I incorporate into what I teach very naturally; If you’re talking about fighting with a gun, the most important aspect is to not add more harm to the situation than is already there. The way that we make a situation worse, is by not adhering to a level of safety that is conducive to keeping people safe. The standard safety rules, the big 4 that people use, or the 3 from the NRA, those are circumstantial … and there are modifications that need to be made. I know a lot of people don’t like to stray from that because it ‘gets too complicated’. But fighting with a gun is a complicated thing, and if you can’t think on a somewhat complex level, then your ability to operate under pressure is probably not going to be that great.” Read the Full Article: HERE

The proportion of American adults who were either overweight or obese has been growing steadily for decades, rising from about 53% a generation ago to roughly 66% more recently. But the share of these adults who had gone on a diet dropped during the same period, researchers reported in the Journal of the American Medical Assn. Basically Fat is the new normal. If we are all fat, we don't stand out. If we mention to someone that their size is unhealthy we are no "Fat Shaming." In a nutshell, Americans are giving up hope. When you lose hope, you die. Why do I say this? In the 1950s, they did a  brutal experiment drowning rats. It was done by a Johns Hopkins professor Curt Richter. The experiment included domesticated and wild rats. He first took a dozen domesticated rats, put them into jars half filled with water, and watched them drown. The idea was to measure the amount of time they swam before they gave up and went under. The first rat, Richter noted, swam around excitedly on the surface for a very short time, then dove to the bottom, where it began to swim around, nosing its way along the glass wall. It died two minutes later. Two more of the 12 domesticated rats died in much the same way. But, interestingly, the nine remaining rats did not succumb nearly so readily; they swam for days before they eventually gave up and died. Now came the wild rats, renowned for their swimming ability. The ones Richter used had been recently trapped and were fierce and aggressive. One by one, he dropped them into the water. And one by one, they surprised him: Within minutes of entering the water, all 34 died Richter then tweaked the experiment: He took other, similar rats, and put them in the jar. Just before they were expected to die, however, he picked them up, held them a little while, and then put them back in the water. “In this way,” he wrote, “the rats quickly learn that the situation is not actually hopeless.” After elimination of hopelessness,” wrote Richter, “the rats do not die.” Full Article Here is a Great Article in Find Hope When There is None In the article, it points out Consider all the amazing things you have done. I can still recall the time, at the ripe and impressionable age of 13, I pulled my first-ever all-nighter with my older cousin to beat Diddy Kong Racing on his Nintendo 64. No, it wasn’t the greatest game ever made for the N64 (though I’ll still argue that it was criminally underrated), but it didn’t need to be. The thrill resided in simply staying up all night, hanging with my older cousin, and finally beating Wizpig as the sun was coming up. Fortunately for me, relatively strict parenting and a knack for socializing prevented these all-nighters from becoming a regular occurrence (I will admit that later on in college I had a couple more restless nights when Skyrim was released). But still, some diehard gamers go down into this sleepless rabbit hole of video game addiction and are unable to pull themselves out. Now, we all probably have our stories about staying up late on a school night to beat that last mission, but for some, this has led to an unhealthy and potentially dangerous lifestyle. A new study conducted by the Hamilton, Ontario-based McMaster University took an in-depth look at how video game addiction is a proponent of sleep deprivation, which in and of itself can bring about a number of health-related issues. The research, which was recently published in the academic journal PLOS One, was pioneered by Dr. Katherine Morrison, an associative professor at McMaster University’s Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine. The case study, which was a collaborative effort by researchers from both McMaster and California State University, Fullerton, featured data analyzed from a group of 94 children and teens between the ages of 10 to 17. These young subjects all played video games and were enrolled in lifestyle management programs for either obesity or lipid disorders. The focus of the study was to research the extent that the video game habits of the group had impacted their sleep habits, obesity risks, and cardio-metabolic health. The research team used fitness trackers to monitor the sleep habits of the participants, which was then compared to their video game usage. What the research showed, unfortunately and— in my opinion— unsurprisingly, was that video game addiction habits did indeed result in a shorter amount sleep, which in turn increased chances of having elevated blood pressure, low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, high triglycerides, and high insulin resistance. Still, as Dr. Morrison acknowledges, this sample set of kids was both specific and quite small, it’s uncertain how these numbers would relate to the general population. But that didn’t prevent Dr. Morrison from finding strong evidence in her research. “That said, we were amazed that amongst gamers, video game addiction scores explained one-third of the differences in sleep duration,” Dr. Morrison said. “Sleep is emerging as a critical behavior for cardio-metabolic health, and this data shows that gaming addictions can cause numerous health issues in at least a segment of the population.” The research team plans to expand their study further, looking to study the effects of video game addiction in more general populations, while also analyzing video game usage and addiction tendencies of gamers over a longer period of time. But what can we, as gamers, do to prevent ourselves, our friends, and our family from falling into the rabbit hole of addiction? As someone with quite the addictive personality, I can sympathize with those who have fully replaced a bulk of their sleep schedule with gaming, but that doesn’t necessarily make it a viable lifestyle alternative. According to Dr. Morrison, those avid and sleepless gamers who are dealing with obesity or some type of lipid disorder should take part in some type of intervention, for their cardio-metabolic health is vital to their long-term well-being. It’s something that some of us, as major video game advocates, hate to admit or deal with as a real issue. Although Dr. Morrison’s study does cast gaming under a relatively negative light, I think it’s important to note that addiction comes in all types of forms, and indulging too much in anything will lead to negative side effects. So, next time I power up my PS4 to get my Phantom Pain on, I’ll try and keep the words my Grandfather has said to me so much, that it’s basically become his motto at this point. “Everything in moderation my boy, everything in moderation.” FULL ARTICLE HERE: http://equityarcade.com/2016/05/14/study-on-video-game-addiction-hints-at-harmful-and-sleepless-consequences/
