Ajahn Dhammasīha cites the following short Pali quote at the beginning of his Dhamma Talk : "Yena yena hi maññanti, tato taṃ hoti aññathā." "By whatever they conceive, that is becoming otherwise." = "Whatever they use as support for their illusion of identity, that is all changing and becoming otherwise" (Majjhima Nikāya/Middle Length Discourses #113, "Sappurisa Sutta" / "Discourse on the Authentic Person") In order to build up and maintain an illusion of self ('Entity View'/'Sakkāyadiṭṭhi'), we need prop ups. The self illusion has to be based on some foundation. In a profound sense, we try to make the five groups of clinging the foundation for our illusionary sense of self. On a more basic level, we use our name, title, degree, address, status symbols, knowledge, clothing, possessions, and so on as prop ups for our supposed identity. But whether on the profound level, or in the more basic manifestations, all these prop ups are actually impermanent and unsatisfactory themselves, and thus any self illusion based on them is unstable and liable to collapse as well, leading to constant anxiety (vicikicchā saṃyojana) and desperate attempts to stabilize and sustain the delusion against the onslaught of impermanence. Which necessarily leads to a whole lot of suffering. During this talk, Peter reviews another way mindfulness practice supports Awakening, contemplating the Five Aggregates of Clinging, part of the Fourth Foundation of Mindfulness.  The Five Aggregates represent a conceptual structure that helps understanding of Anatta, the absence of an enduring, autonomous self.  Concrete, a crucial structural component in almost any building or road, is composed of cement, gravel, sand and water, which aggregate and solidify into a form–the human personality is also aggregated from file elements, and they can be investigated with sufficient training in mindfulness.  When we are mindful of these elements as aggregates, the ability to “deconstruct” the self is nurtured. Here are the notes prepared for this talk:  REVIEWING THE FIVE AGGREGATES OF CLINGING

Philosophies for Life

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 26, 2025 18:38

In this podcast we will be talking about how to deal with suffering in life from the philosophy of the Buddha. Gautama Buddha was a philosopher, a spiritual leader and is credited as the founder of Buddhism.   The teachings of Buddha revolve around Duhkha, which means suffering, and the end of Duhkha, which is regarded as the state of Nirvana.  The philosophy's most essential teaching includes the Three Marks of Existence, which are as follows:  01. Annica which means that life is in a constant flux, we have already made a video on this, the link for this is in the description. 02. Duhkha which means that life is painful and causes suffering, and 03. Anatta which means that the self is always changing After the Buddha gained enlightenment, he traveled to Sarnath in the present-day district of Varanasi, where he met with five monks, he previously practiced with and gave his first sermon, the four noble truths. These four Noble Truths are the foundational tenets of Buddhism, which spark awareness of suffering as the nature of existence, its cause, and how to live without it. In this video we are going to talk about dukha, the second mark of existence, to better understand the suffering that we all go through and how we can use these 4 noble truths to deal with suffering in our modern day life. The four noble truths  are as follows -  01. The truth of Dukha  02. The truth of Samudaya 03. The Truth of Nirodha 04. The truth of Magga I hope you enjoyed listening to this podcast and hope these lessons from Buddha will help you in dealing with changes in your life.  The Buddha was a philosopher, meditator, spiritual teacher, and religious leader who is credited as the founder of Buddhism. He was born as Siddhartha Gautama in India in 566 BC into an aristocratic family and when he was twenty-nine years old, he left the comforts of his home to seek the meaning of the suffering he saw around him. After six years of arduous yogic training, he abandoned the way of self-mortification and instead sat in mindful meditation beneath a bodhi tree. On the full moon of May, with the rising of the morning star, Siddhartha Gautama became the Buddha, the awakened one. The Buddha wandered the plains of northeastern India for 45 years more, teaching the path or Dharma he had realized in that moment. Around him developed a community of people, drawn from every tribe and caste, devoted to practicing this path. Nowadays, he is worshiped by most Buddhist schools as the enlightened one who has escaped the cycle of birth and rebirth, transcending Karma. Their main teachings focus on their insight into duhkha meaning “suffering” and into Nirvana, which means the end of suffering.

It is a way of understanding ourselves and the world around us and in this video we will be talking about the first mark of existence - Annica to better understand the ever-changing, impermanent nature of life and how we can deal with the changes that come with that. Here are 4 ways we can try to not only embrace life changes, but also be happy and grow with them, from the philosophy of The Buddha -  01. Acknowledge the change 02. Practice non-attachment   03. Embrace change 04. Learn from the experience I hope you listening to this podcast and hope these lessons from Buddha will help you in dealing with changes in your life.  The Buddha was a philosopher, meditator, spiritual teacher, and religious leader who is credited as the founder of Buddhism. In this podcast we will be talking about how to move on in life from the philosophy of the Buddha. Gautama Buddha was a philosopher, a spiritual leader and is credited as the founder of Buddhism. Buddha's most essential teaching includes the Three Marks of Existence, which are as follows:  01. Annica which means that life is in a constant flux, we have already made a video on this, the link for this is in the description. 02. Dukkha which means that life is painful and causes suffering, and 03. Anatta which means that the self is always changing According to Buddhism, our "self" is made up of five things, which they call "The Five Aggregates of clinging." These are:  01. Our physical body, our form,  02. How we feel about things, our feelings,  03. How we see and understand the world, our perception,  04. Our consciousness, which is our awareness, and  05. Our thoughts and emotions, our mental formations.  But none of these things on their own represent our true, unchanging self because they all change over time. So, "anattā" doesn't mean "no self" but rather "no permanent self." It reminds us that nothing in life stays the same forever, including ourselves. Understanding this concept of "non-self" can help us let go of things and move on in life. It can make us feel free and independent.  So here are six ways that you can use the idea of "non-self" to help you move on in life from the wisdom of buddha -  01. Live In The Present 02. Embrace Change 03. Be Grateful 04. Increase Your Confidence 05. Forgive 06. Be Compassionate I hope you enjoyed listening to this podcast and hope these lessons from Buddha will help you in moving on  in your life.  The Buddha was a philosopher, meditator, spiritual teacher, and religious leader who is credited as the founder of Buddhism. Ajahn Dhammasiha responds to a question from the audience: What's the meaning of Anatta ( Not Self ) ? In particular, Ajahn reflects about the important distinction between Not Self (anatta), which the Buddha expounded very frequently, and No Self (natth'attā), which the Buddha actually never taught. Dhammagiri Website Our Spotify Playlists Newsletter Dhammagiri Youtube Channel Pics #anatta #notself #not-self #buddhism #dhammatalk

Language shapes our perception of reality and keeps us within a limited framework. By constantly using the word "I", we reinforce the illusion of a separate self. Some Buddhist or Hindu monks avoid using "I", saying "your monastery" instead of "my monastery" to emphasize that everything belongs to everyone. This practice challenges the notion of ownership and self-identity.Feelings, like thoughts, are patterns of conditioning. They are not who we truly are but rather responses shaped by our past experiences. Our goal in the academy is to liberate ourselves both consciously and unconsciously. Conscious liberation involves understanding our thought patterns, while unconscious liberation involves recognizing the processes we aren't fully aware of, like our heartbeat or breath. These processes are automatic and reflect a deeper level of existence that we want to be in touch with.Suffering arises when we identify with our feelings and thoughts, thinking they belong to us. We crave good feelings and avoid bad ones, which keeps us trapped in a cycle of desire and aversion. To free ourselves, we must detach from these feelings and thoughts, recognizing them as temporary and conditioned. Our sense of "I" is made up of five aggregates: the physical body and four mental states—cognition, recognition, sensation, and reaction. The body is ever-changing and not a permanent self. Similarly, our mental states are impermanent and influenced by our conditioning.Cognition is the direct experience, the neutral opening of a window to the world. Recognition is the meaning we assign to these experiences. Sensation is the emotional response, and reaction is the action we take based on these feelings. None of these are the true self; they are just processes.By observing these processes and recognizing their impermanence, we can begin to detach from the false sense of a permanent self. Changing habitual patterns, like waking up at a different time or using the opposite hand, helps us understand the depth of our conditioning when we are aware of the craving and aversion patterns.Ultimately, wisdom comes from moving beyond intellectual understanding to experiential realization. By living the truth of impermanence and non-self, we can reduce suffering and elevate our awareness, leading to greater freedom and interconnectedness.

Recently I have been talking about how nonduality is integrated into and expressed in everyday life. In the past couple of episodes I have been addressing moral and political decisions, such as politics and war. Specifically I have talked about the Gaza war and dualistic American politics of right versus left, conservatives versus liberals, Republicans versus Democrats. The responses I have received indicate to me that I am not communicating very well that nonduality is not political position or a worldview or a philosophy or a religion or an idea or a principle or something like that.  That means that I need to get back to basics once again. So that is what I am doing today.I have said before that I see two approaches to awakening to Ultimate Reality. Self-inquiry and God-inquiry. We look inward in search of a self and we look outward in search of a God. Both inquiries end up in the same place: the realization that there is no self and no God. What I mean by that is that there is no separate self and separate God as traditionally understood. When it is seen that there is no separate self and separate god, it is seen there is no problem. All problems, including the problem of suffering and the problem or evil drop away when Reality is seen.
