Donald Bielen is the Managing Director of Capital Eleven Advisors, an investment firm specializing in private equity, early-stage venture capital, and real estate development. Donald has completed over 300 business transitions and exit plans for clients across the United States. Before joining Capital Eleven Advisors, he led the Business Transition Services team as Principal at Perkins and Co., was the Director of Business Advisory Services at the Rainier Group, Inc., and was an Operations Manager at a Fortune 100 company. He earned his bachelor's degree in Finance and Economics, followed by an MBA, and holds certifications as a Certified Financial Planner (CFP®) and Certified Merger & Acquisition Advisor (CM&AA). In this episode… Too many business owners wait until they're ready to exit before thinking about what it takes to transition out of their company successfully. But leaving a business isn't just about legal documents and financials — it's deeply personal, emotional, and strategic. How can leaders create a long-term plan that protects their legacy and maximizes business value? Donald Bielen, a seasoned expert in succession planning and business transitions, explains why planning for five to ten years is critical to a smooth exit. Donald shares actionable insights on grooming internal successors, aligning personal and professional goals, and avoiding common pitfalls — like undervaluing the emotional aspect of letting go. He also illustrates his points with real-world stories, including a failed deal involving a pet food company and a successful strategy for a multilocation treatment center. Tune in to this episode of the Smart Business Revolution Podcast as John Corcoran interviews Donald Bielen, Managing Director at Capital Eleven Advisors, about the strategies behind effective succession planning. “Communications is the piece that underlines everything you do. Being able to articulate your idea or the message you want and having it perceived the way you wanted to.” Joe Taylor and Courtney McKay Today's guests are; Joe Taylor, a founding member of JTaylor in 1999 and currently Chairman of the Board of Managers. Joe delivers a full complement of business advisory and tax planning expertise to their clients with a special emphasis in the areas of business formation and structural planning, business reorganizations, business, buy, sell, structuring, estate, and gift tax planning, business valuation, business planning, development, and more. She has extensive knowledge of business enterprise valuations, incentive compensation plans, and damage assessments. In addition, she has assisted clients with strategic planning, including joint venturing, business acquisition, and due diligence services. According to Joe and Courtney, Communications plays an important role in business, especially when accounting language seems so foreign to the test of the other departments in the organization. They agree that practicing and repeating communication as a way to make accounting more approachable is essential to its effects on the rest of the organization. Communication is an essential skill that separates those successful in the accounting industry. It's not just running numbers but what you do with the numbers that make the difference. The skills you learn will enable you to know how to deal with different situations and people and what response you need to give them. Drawing examples from amongst themselves, they agree that communicating with colleagues is very different from how you will disseminate information to a client or the rest of the departments. In this episode, we focus on the work of our in-country partners in Fiji. Since 2018, our partnership has contributed to the development of the local market for business advisory services and supported thousands of Fijian businesses. Here are some highlights of the partnership: Facilitated access to local business advisory services worth 2.35M NZD, 50% directly invested by the private sector. Services have supported nearly 500 Fijian businesses to improve their operations and resilience and have contributed to creating more than 400 new jobs, 50% occupied by women. Enabled 250 business adaptation grants worth 1.5M NZD that have helped SMEs in Fiji adapt to the new post-COVID environment, safeguard jobs and create new products and services.  Supported over 1,000 businesses through face-to-face business diagnostics, online health checks and continuity planning to improve their planning and identify gaps and opportunities. In this episode, we talk with Ramesh Chan, former BLP's Business Service Manager in Fiji, about the variety of services offered locally by BLP's business advisors and the importance of their professional services for the future recovery of the SME sector. Ramesh worked with the Fiji Commerce and Employers Federation during the first years of BLP in the country and currently leads the work of Business Assistance Fiji (BAF), BLP's new in-country partner.  BAF was brought together by the Fiji Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FCCI), Fiji Commerce and Employers Federation (FCEF), Fiji Institute of Accountants (FIA) and Women in Business (WIB) to address the needs of the private sector after the pandemic. We also talked to Marina Cherry, owner of Sweet Endings in Fiji and adaptation grant recipient. Marina talks about the struggles of running a business and the importance of innovation and adaptation. Finally, we consider the many strengths and opportunities of the market of business advisory services in Fiji and its role in supporting a brighter economic future for the region.

Alison recently authored a report on government procurement in China, and while the topic may sound somewhat dry, it is in fact of enormous consequence for American firms operating in China. Alison discusses how government procurement is designed in China, and ways that governments at different levels and state-owned enterprises are able to execute an implicit “buy Chinese” policy, which in some cases is in violation of international agreements, including terms of China's WTO accession. Also discussed are the number of ways that American companies are working with local companies and governments to deal with this increasingly restrictive environment.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

If you don’t have the ability to bring in good staff then you simply cannot expand your business. Even outsourcing companies are having trouble around employee retention and recruitment. As business owners we need to look at packages that are more than just financial benefits. Your employees have wants and needs around things like child care, travel expenses, and working remotely. The values of your company will attract likeminded people. If you are known as a company that is family orientated and has a great work life balance, then you will attract and be able to keep those kinds of people. Somebody could be courting your key employee right now so you need to do something sooner rather than later. These clients were obviously running sound businesses prior to the challenges of COVID-19 and many of them will need your assistance to be able to recreate the business activities that they had in operation, prior to the lockdowns and other problems that have been caused by the virus. The opportunities include varied, interesting work for your team and potentially new income streams from offering new types of services to your clients and prospects. There is an opportunity to offer a new range of commercial services to assist small/medium enterprises to add value to their businesses. In survey after survey over the last 15 years, SMEs have indicated that they require more professional services than just taxation. SMEs are looking for assistance in running their businesses and adding value – they are looking for more commercial assistance from their accountants. With today’s technology and communications, accountants can offer a range of services beyond taxation and, in some cases, your clients will be interested in talking to you about offering a virtual Chief Financial Officer Service. I know that for many accountants this is a big step.  Many of you have spent all of your careers in accountancy businesses and are a little reluctant to offer commercial services to your clients.  The real issue that you need to be concerned about is that the marketplace is changing.  Taxation is becoming more and more a commodity product!  Accountants are in the fortunate position of being able to offer a broader range of services without having to receive any special licenses.

I'm Peter Towers, Managing Director of ESS Small Business.  Welcome to Survival Hints for Small Business.   According to the “Accounting Market Pulse”, a publication produced by the Commonwealth Bank targeted at accountants, this is the year of “business advisory services”.   What are you going to do to be able to make sure that you receive more commercial services from your accountants/advisors during this financial year - the year that the accountancy profession has acknowledged as being the year of business advisory services?   ESS Small Business supplies resources to accountants/advisors to assist them to be able to deliver a wider range of commercial services, other than taxation, to you, the small/medium businesses.  These services include: articles forms templates videos powerpoint slides webinars news releases to assist your accountant/advisor to be able to offer these services, without them having to spend an enormous amount of time in preparing that material.   The overall objective is to try to shorten the time that it takes for accountants/advisors to be able to deliver an effective business advisory services range of products to you to assist you to add value to your business.  Isn't that what it's all about?   In fact, the product range that we have, covers some vital areas of small business management, including:   Early Stage Innovation Company If you're interested in trying to raise some capital from external investors for a product, process, service that you've developed… this is the company for you, so talk to your accountant in relation to this.  They can use the checklist software that we've introduced to be able to tell you whether you can self-assess as being an Early Stage Innovation Company.  You can then raise capital from investors.   Debtor's Management What is your current debtors' days outstanding?  Do you know what it is?  In most businesses it's far too high.  Your accountant can help you in this very important cashflow management process to reduce the amount of money that you're owed by your debtors.   Personal Property Securities Register What do you know about the Personal Property Securities Register (PPSR)?   Many small businesses don't know much about it at all, yet this legislation, if you do not comply with it, can financially wreck your business, so one of the most important risk management areas that you have is to make sure you're familiar with how the Personal Property Securities Register works.  Talk to your accountant/advisor and your lawyer about this legislation.   Business Plans Business plans are like maps for tourists; you need to plan where you're going to go and then be able to measure how you're going on that journey.  Running a business is no different.   Succession Planning Succession planning covers the owners of the business, the management team of a business, but it also encompasses all of the team members because unless people are continually training and improving their skills and knowledge, which is really what succession planning is all about, you'll not be able to promote them - you'll have to continually bring in new people from outside.   Virtual Chief Financial Officer Service The virtual CFO product offering that some accountants/advisors are now able to deliver around Australia is a vital component to assisting you and your management team to have a better understanding of the financial accounts, the key performance indicators, the ratio analysis, the budgets and cashflow forecasts.  How it all merges together and then, with that knowledge, your management team should be able to run your businesses far more effectively because they will clearly understand what the financial data is telling them.   Government Grants What value of government grants did you receive in 2015/16?  What about the year before?  Do you realise there are billions of dollars being paid out in Australia for virtually every type of business as government grants.   Why do governments offer government grants?   They don't do it just to spend taxpayers' money, even though some cynics might say that.  At times, government do it because they're trying to make a contribution and the only way that governments can perceive to do that is to try to improve the overall business performance in Australia by paying about 50% of the cost for some improvement activities to be introduced.   If you're not receiving a government grant, knock on the door of your accountant/advisor and ask them why they're not talking to you about government grants, because I and a large number of other accountants/advisors believe that this is an important process that accountants/advisors should be doing.   To celebrate everything that we're doing as we enter this year of business advisory services, we are presenting a webinar to you, a small/medium enterprise operator, on Wednesday 27th July 2016 at 4pm AEST.  We look forward to you participating in this free webinar.  Click here to register to attend.   We have produced a special article on the services that accountants/advisors can provide to you, “…”.  A complimentary copy of this article is attached with this transcript.   Accountants/Advisors can Assist Remember, you're the boss when it comes to dealing with your accountants/advisors.  If you want some additional services, please ask them to supply them.  If they're unable to supply them, ESS Small Business has a directory of accountants/advisers who are interested in supplying a wider range of services, commonly known as “business advisory services”, to small/medium enterprises.  This directory is called “Find an Accountant/Adviser”.   Visit www.esssmallbusiness.com.au and click on “Find an Accountant/Adviser” menu tab.  All you need to do is to type in your postcode and the system will then show you accountants/advisers in or near your postcode who offer a wider range of commercial services to small/medium enterprises.   Good luck in 2016/17 and I really hope that you are able to obtain the additional services that you want, to be able to add value to your businesses.   If you have any questions in relation to how accountants/advisers can assist you to add value to your business, please don’t hesitate to contact me on 1800 232 088 or send me an email at peter@essbiztools.com.au.       Peter Towers Managing Director

Everyone will be affected by the changing climate, but the poor and vulnerable will suffer most. She argued that we must avoid a 4 degree warmer world and prepare for 2 degrees, and highlights action that would make the biggest difference. However, while climate change is a major threat, inclusive green growth is an opportunity. Ms Kyte outlined the World Bank Group’s efforts to catalyze climate-smart development and green growth.
