Tonya asks, "If my horse is riding in a bosal/hackamore, can they stay in the bosal or do they have to be switched into a bit?" (
Let's break it down and simplify it! Bridging the gap between where we are in our education, where our horse is and where we would like to be together can be frustrating to say the least at times. Megan asks how, if at all possible, how I approach training horses for other people while keeping the principle of 'work from where your horse is at today' at the forefront. Fact is, my approach with personal and client horses hardly varies and yes it is a MUST to keep that principle as part of ones approach (otherwise things that the horse 'learns' may merely be superficial and not last). So click play and let's dive into this fantastic question! And I've got a gift to you and your horse. We wrote an entire book on leadership for our horses. It is called 'Be a Leader Worth Following'. You can download the E-Book version totally free! You can download it here: www.coltonwoodshorsemanship.com/e-book Inside of it is an entire guided workbook with the exact things I've implemented in my own life. They've transformed my relationship with myself, my horses, my family and friends and I know they can for you too. Learn what you can do in and out of the arena to make sure you are prepared to serve and lead your horse to the utmost ability. Two years ago my journey transformed. I was preparing for my second Extreme Mustang Makeover event and knew I needed to do things differently if I wanted to go deeper with my horse on the relationship level and further in what we could accomplish. I made changes in my day to day life to better serve my horses. These changes not only transformed my horsemanship, they made me feel lighter, less stressed, happier, more present, more prepared, healthier and so much more. The awesome part was they were very simple changes to things I was already doing every day. Over the last two years I've broken down what I've done, how I've done it (and how you can too!), as well as the why- because we all need greater, deeper purpose just like our horses. I'll scratch the surface with you in this video on the things Ive implemented into my life that have enabled me to minimize and even eliminate frustrations between me and my horse, create clarity in our communication and understanding of one another and ultimately create deeper trust and connection. Helping you and your horse achieve these things together is incredibly important to me. My journey with horses started with horses that lacked a lot of trust of humans (in an equine rescue). Therefore I have a deep sense of purpose to help you and your horse build the relationship you desire and can together. So here is my gift to you and you horse. We wrote an entire book on leadership for our horses. It is called 'Be a Leader Worth Following'. You can download the E-Book version totally free! (Just scroll down)***** True West Horsemanship: Facebook & Instagram & YouTube About Ben & True West Horsemanship: Ben grew up on the Western Slope of Colorado, riding horses and working cattle. After finishing school, he spent much of his time doing day work for different ranches in the area, learning from the experience of the ranchers. He also spent a year working as assistant trainer at a Quarter Horse breeder in Colorado, learning the basics of colt starting and true horsemanship. Much of the next six years was spent in the colt starting & horse training business and his knowledge and experience continued to expand. During this time Ben worked on a 300,000 acre cattle & horse ranch in Wyoming, where he was also involved in conducting horsemanship clinics and demonstrations. Adding to a lifetime of practical equine experience, he is influenced by the methods of such horsemen as Tom & Bill Dorrance, Ray Hunt, and Buck Brannaman and has ridden with Richard Caldwell, Jeff Sanders, Martin Black and Dave Weaver. In 2011, Ben and his wife Natalie moved to her native country of New Zealand and took the opportunity to build a horse training and clinic business. Since then, Ben has been privileged to be a returning Clinician at NZ’s national horse expo seven different years. In 2014 Ben was invited to participate in New Zealand’s first Kaimanawa Stallion Challenge – where trainers were randomly given a Kaimanawa Stallion straight from the wild and competed in 2 stages of competition. Ben has appeared in and written for a number of Equine Magazines, both in New Zealand and internationally, as well as appearing in an episode of Masterclass on Country TV. He also has an Online Video Library that contains a wide range of instructional videos for advancing students’ skills and horsemanship regardless of discipline or breed. "When you judge another, you do not define them, you define yourself." -Wayne Dyer In today's society where cancel culture is accepted widely and some believe you either have to take a stance on one side or another- I find the most reasonable truth exists somewhere in the middle. You see, your judgement of others can limit you and can save you. As people we are naturally wired for continuous growth and creativity while also maintaining a desire to survive and live. Judgement is there to serve both. Not all Judgement is bad and not all judgement is good. So it is time we get Beyond the Surface of Judgement in today's episode. Do you realize your thoughts, both positive and negative, create your reality? Manifesting is not just something we decide to do, it is something we are always doing every day! In today's episode we sit down with Road to the Horse 2021 WildCard Competitor and Extreme Mustang Makeover Champions Craig Moore and his fiance Katie Ketterhagen and discuss the journey to paving a way in the horse industry as a first generation horseman, practical horsemanship and what horsemanship even means as well as how much your belief of whether you can or cannot truly shapes your future. All we ask is if you learn something, have a good laugh or simply enjoy today's interview- and we know you will- to share this with your friends :) For those serious about furthering their horsemanship and investing in their own personal happiness, health & growth: Learn more here about the Inner Circle. About Craig Moore & Katie Ketterhagen: Craig is a first generation horseman who spent much of his childhood inside of his mother’s beauty shop. He is the youngest son of Joe and Kim Moore. He started riding horses at 13 and became a team roper who competed in high school and college rodeo. After college he walked away from horses and spent his days golfing and nights as a paramedic. After some years doing that he realized how much he missed the horses and the western way of life. He currently lives, works, and runs a training business with his fiancé Katie Ketterhagen in May, Texas. Katie grew up riding and showing Arabians, and started training her own horses in her early teens. She spent two years at the University of Findlay in Ohio, majoring in Western Equestrian Studies. In 2012 she trained her first Mustang for an Extreme Mustang Makeover, and became hooked into the Mustang world. She has since competed in 10 EMM’s and 2 TIP Challenges. Craig and Katie train horses of all breeds for the public and aspire to one day be world class clinicians so they can help as many horses and people as possible. Most of us want and desire the end results and the majestic beauty that is earned by becoming a master artisan. The fact of the matter is, most of us have not even learned the basic building blocks and become the mechanic in developing the foundation for us to launch into the creative artistry of our chosen craft. This morning we go deep and get tactical into the key foundational building blocks we must have for building a beautiful future, the tactical questions we must actually answer, not just think about, and cover how we can apply this lesson into our direct lives. Questions from Today's Episode: What is your vision or goal? Why is this your vision or goal? What problem does it solve or purpose does it serve? What is your long term goal or vision? (And be specific when answering this. It is OK if your answer changes later, that is what reflection is for, but for now you need to answer this questions as specific as possible) What is your immediate short term goals? (These goals should be very specific, you should be able to measure your progress systematically, they should be realistically attainable, they should be relevant to your quest and they must have have start and end dates) And finally, what is your plan of action for how you are going to get started? A horse that spooks and enters a survival state of mind, that can be dangerous for both horse and rider! In today's question, we discuss this as well as how to prepare a horse mentally to feel relaxed, focused, more confident as well as for how the rider/handler can establish more influence during a horse's thought process. We also get into some brief tactics for developing ourselves so we can better serve our horses during our time together! Want your questions answer? Submit them here! As the leader of our own life, our horses, our family, workplace and all other roles we are blessed with in life- we are responsible for the actions of ourself and those on our team. This means we must be willing, prepared and able to communicate, listen, understand and effectively respond to those we are conversing with. This sounds simple and it is. But many people take the path of least resistance with non confrontation, non communication, thinking that this is the easy way out when in reality it simply delays the inevitable and creates a surmounting pressure within the situation at hand. To be honest, many aren't willing to put in the work. Nonetheless, in today's episode we take a listen to one of the most powerful movie scenes of all time and learn how we can directly implement the lessons from this scene in our every day lives with other people and our horses. If you had a hand full of seeds that would provide for you, your family, your community, your clients and all those you want to serve but I told you that when you watered and fed those seeds that weeds would grow too, would you stop caring for your crop just because a few weeds grew? Of course not! This year as felt like we've had the thickest and the biggest weeds growing around us, yet this year has been filled with tremendous opportunity. Some will let this year define the potential for the years that lie ahead and today is the day we must realize despite the challenges, we must still keep planting seeds and tending to our crop. This Monday Morning Motivation is a deep and longer message than we typically bring you each week- however this is a message we feel is tremendously important that we share. Find some time to be present where you can focus on the lessons in today's episode. It is our hope that it speaks to your soul and into your life so it may serve you in some way. Maredith joins Colton back on the podcast to have the critical discussion: The importance of how we speak about our horses. You know the whole, "She's just being a mare", "He's a dopey, lazy gelding", "He's just dumb" or "She's a red headed pissy mare". The list goes on and we've all heard and said those things from time to time. We'll the fact of the matter is, the things we say and the things we think about our horses do truly define who they are. So in this episode Colton & Maredith discuss the overwhelming problems our horse's face based on the human thought process and how we as people can start to restructure the way we think and speak about our horses so they can live up to their potential, we can reach our goals and together we can have that stronger connection and a healthier relationship with our horses. Our thoughts become our feelings and our feelings become our reality, it is not just a novel idea, it is a neurological fact. When you combine that with the fact that a negative thought is 4-7 times more powerful than a positive thought, it becomes overwhelmingly evident as to why we must harness the ability to find a grounded center around positivity. Listen in to this week's Monday Morning Motivation with Colton as we unpack the facts behind negativity and why we must invest in our own self awareness for a brighter future. Dream BIG! That is what we are told to do. For some reason, some of us stop. Yet at the same time, the gap between where we are today and where we see ourselves in those big dreams is only a matter of making minor adjustments. Frequent, consistent, minor adjustments to our every day lives. My wife and I spent some time this last weekend discussing some big goals and dreams. We spent time reflecting, clarifying, redefining and collaborating together in an effort to identify those small adjustments we need to make. I hope this week's Monday Morning Motivation inspires you to spend some time relfecting and implementing some tactical advice I share this week that we have implemented in our own lives. Whether in times of plenty or those which are challenging, gratitude will always serve us. Gratitude does not mean complacency but rather the simple thought, acknowledgement and thankfulness for what we have today in our lives whether that be the people around us, places we've been or even the things we have. It so easy to get caught up in the day to day hustle yet it is even easier to take a few minutes to remind ourselves and be thankful, be grateful for where we are and what we have. Take a listen to this week's Monday Morning Motivation for how we can implement Gratitude into our lives a little bit more and transform our day, week and life. We must continually act to not only progress but also to simply not get left behind. In this MMM Colton shares a personal example of doing all one can to prevent loss yet still losing. Everyday we interact with people and horses and within those interactions are opportunities for communication. Every one of us has moments where we think, 'It is common sense, what is so hard about it?' Or our use of a particular word and another's understanding of that word in how we used it are totally different. Yep. Words are not equal and common sense is not so common. These differences, in horses and humans, stem from the same foundational principle and that is what we are diving into on this episode of our Monday Morning Motivation with Colton Woods Horsemanship! It's time to bring those illusions, those dreams, those ideas and goals to reality. It's time we realize that by simply thinking about what we want in life, that we can chemically train our genes, hormones, neurology and more to be prepared for when it comes true. That is right. Our brains (proven through science) do NOT know the difference between a thought and an experience. Every time you think and every time you feel, your brain creates a chemical. If they are good thoughts and good experiences, those chemicals make you feel good. If they are bad thoughts and experiences, well you start to feel like crap. Manifestation is real my friends. It doesnt happen without the work, but the power of thought is incredible. Now lets dive in to this week's Monday Morning Motivation!
