John 11:17-44When Jesus arrived, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days. Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, some two miles away, and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console them about their brother. When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, while Mary stayed at home. Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. But even now I know that God will give you whatever you ask of him.” Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.” Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.” Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?” She said to him, “Yes, Lord, I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one coming into the world.”When she had said this, she went back and called her sister Mary and told her privately, “The Teacher is here and is calling for you.” And when she heard it, she got up quickly and went to him. Now Jesus had not yet come to the village but was still at the place where Martha had met him. The Jews who were with her in the house consoling her saw Mary get up quickly and go out. They followed her because they thought that she was going to the tomb to weep there. When Mary came where Jesus was and saw him, she knelt at his feet and said to him, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” When Jesus saw her weeping and the Jews who came with her also weeping, he was greatly disturbed in spirit and deeply moved. He said, “Where have you laid him?” They said to him, “Lord, come and see.” Jesus began to weep. So the Jews said, “See how he loved him!” But some of them said, “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?”Then Jesus, again greatly disturbed, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was lying against it. Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, “Lord, already there is a stench because he has been dead four days.” Jesus said to her, “Did I not tell you that if you believed you would see the glory of God?” So they took away the stone. And Jesus looked upward and said, “Father, I thank you for having heard me. I knew that you always hear me, but I have said this for the sake of the crowd standing here, so that they may believe that you sent me.” When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with strips of cloth and his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.” I hate bagged salad. To this day, I can still remember the: like fermented lettuce soaked in apple cider vinegar and cat pee. It was putrid. Pallets of it were taken to the farm every week. You've probably heard me talk about the farminary before: farm plus seminary equals farminary. It was agriculture and theological education wrapped into one. Before my first class started, I had grand ideas about what the farminary would be like: romanticized thoughts about growing a huge, flourishing garden that would compete with Eden.On the first day of class, Nate Stucky, our professor and director of the farminary, led us to our first hands-on agricultural assignment. It wasn't tilling rows, planting seeds, and certainly not picking any harvest. Instead, he led us to the compost pile and a pallet of bagged salad swarming with flies. Even now, I am convinced you could see green streaks of stench floating above it like in a cartoon.Nate told us, “Today you continue to help bring this farm back to life.” Before the farminary began, the land had been a sod farm and a Christmas tree farm. Both of those stripped the land of the good, rich soil, leaving behind infertile dirt that no one wanted. Nate knew when he began the farminary that the first thing he had to do was bring the soil back to life. Which meant students like me spent much of our time at the compost pile, ripping open thousands of bagged salad kits, dumping the contents onto the pile, and turning it over and over. And it wasn't just rotten lettuce. Food waste from the dining hall. Coffee grounds from a local shop. Leaves from last fall. All of it together—a giant pile of smelly, dying compost—was what brought life to this barren land. When we stirred it all up and revealed the black soil at the bottom, Nate would say, “That's resurrection.”The obvious, yet difficult thing about resurrection is that it requires death first. Most of us approach death like either Martha or Mary. Martha approaches it with hope. She is certainly grieved by her brother's death—“Lord, if you had been here…” but at the same time she remembers the promises she's heard her whole life about resurrection and life everlasting. So she responds with hope for the future: “God will do what you ask, and I know there will be resurrection someday.”But Jesus wants Martha to have hope in this life, not just the next.So he says, “I am the resurrection and the life. Do you believe this?” Jesus takes those promises we know in our heads and puts a face to them. In moments of loss and crisis and death, what matters most is not just what you know, but who you know—who you trust. You know about resurrection, Jesus says, but do you believe I am the one who brings life now, not just someday?Mary, on the other hand, comes with no speeches, no theology, no future hope. She says the same words as her sister, but without the reassurance: “Lord, if you had been here…” I imagine her angry and sad, crying on her knees, repeating that line over and over. Jesus doesn't correct her or explain anything. He just meets her tears with his own.I find it comforting that Jesus seems to meet each sister where she is—strengthening Martha's hope while sitting in Mary's despair. Because whether we come with hope or with anger, with faith or with tears, Jesus still walks us to the tomb.Because it's there at the tomb, in deep grief and pain, that Jesus reveals his glory. With the stench of death in the air, Jesus says to Martha, “Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?” What Jesus is telling Martha, and us, is that the glory of God is revealed in resurrection: not just when hearts start beating again, but whenever something we thought was dead begins to live again.Yes, Lazarus is raised, but God's glory is seen in anything that has been treated like it's dead but brought back to life. In the things we have grieved, mourned, and wept over, but that somehow lives again. In the stuff that is rotting and stinking, yet somehow comes back to life. We can see this glory all around us. If you've ever been out west to Yellowstone National Park, one of the most common trees you'll see is the lodgepole pine. When fires come through the park, they burn the trees and scorch the earth below. But in the heat, the pines release their resin-sealed seeds onto the ground. The flames melt the resin, the underbrush is cleared away, and out of the ashes rise new trees. What looks like destruction is actually preparation for new life. Death and resurrection. The glory of God.Or consider the Martindale–Brightwood neighborhood right here on the near northeast side of Indianapolis. Once a thriving neighborhood for middle-class Black families, it was systematically devastated by redlining and pollution, left to decay. But for decades now, churches, neighbors, and the Martindale–Brightwood Community Development Corporation have been working together to bring affordable housing, access to food, jobs, and mentoring for youth to the area—all signs of new life. It's not a story of a thriving area, yet. But I bet Lazarus wasn't running a marathon the next day. It's slow, but it's still death and resurrection. The glory of God.Think of your own life: a relationship once shattered is revived; a career thoroughly burned is brought back from the ashes; a love of God rekindled after years of church hurt and deconstruction. Each one an example of resurrection. The glory of God is seen in the dead, rotten, smelly, sealed-up places because that's where new life is called forth. If we want resurrection, then we can't be offended by a little stench. We can't be too scared of death, because the two go together. And resurrection isn't something we just witness. We are invited to get involved. Jesus says to those gathered there, “Unbind him and let him go.” Jesus does the raising, but he tells the community to do the unbinding.Resurrection is God's work. But unbinding… that's the church's work. That's our workAnd we are already trying to do this in our own way. Through our Outreach Grants, through our support of Project Rouj, through investing in people and places that are overlooked, we are helping unbind what God is bringing back to life. We are saying this is not over yet. There is still life here.Sometimes unbinding looks like helping a neighborhood come back to life. Sometimes it looks like walking with someone through grief or addiction or failure until they can stand again, like our Stephen Ministers do.Sometimes it's forgiveness, cutting the grave clothes off a relationship that was assumed over.Unbinding is helping people live again. And that is the work Jesus gives to the church: to go to the places of death and look for signs of new life. So let's rip open the bag.Pour out the rot.Stir the pile.Take in the smell, looking for signs of life, for the glory of God.And once we see it,unbind it,let it go,and spread it around.God has brought back to lifethat which was dead. And we have seen God's glory, alive and well, here and now.Amen.

In Luke 24, Jesus says that the entire Bible is about him. But just what is the relationship between the Bible as the "word of God" and Jesus as the "Word of God." And are we given any clues along the way that might help us make sense of how we, as Christians, should approach both Jesus and the Bible?

Send us a textWhat if the strongest antidote to perfectionism isn't tougher goals, but kinder ones? We sit down with life coach and former Dartmouth swim coach Jenn Verser to explore how compassion—especially the kind we offer ourselves—can loosen the grip of people pleasing, fear of failure, and the constant need to outperform. Jen brings candid stories from elite athletics and real-world coaching, showing how high achievers can reframe identity, find alignment, and rebuild confidence without burning out.We dig into why perfectionism is rising among students and professionals, how cultural pressure moves the finish line, and what happens when your “best” meets a room full of “bests.” Jenn shares practical tools that work: say your inner monologue out loud so you can hear its tone, practice receiving help as a gift rather than a debt, and use conversation—not just policy—to lead with integrity. Her story about keeping a struggling athlete on the team reveals how context, transparency, and accountability can transform outcomes. This is leadership that starts at the human level and scales through trust. We also talk about life beyond the resume. Jenn explains her shift from corporate to coaching to be present for her child and aging parents, and how anyone can start realignment without quitting their job. Expect concrete takeaways on boundaries, self-trust, emotional recovery, and how to replace “always-on” with honest priorities. If you've been measuring your worth by output, this conversation offers a warmer, smarter metric: progress you can feel.If this resonated, follow the show, share it with someone who needs a gentler path to growth, and leave a quick review so others can find it. What is our answer to the most important question in our lives?
God's grace is not bound by anything. It is poured out extravagantly as from a fountain to free us from bondage. That is the story told in this episode of TURNING HOME called "Unbinding Grace."
There's many different types of magick in this world, and the Primordial Beings offer such a beautiful form of magick to us. Here in this episode, we break down the Primordial Beings magick and having a relationship to them. I'll admit, the beginning of the episode is a bit chaotic- but would it really be Aquarius if there wasn't some chaos? Thankfully it turns into an educational moment. This is also the first episode of Coven related magick at the end, so if you're interested in joining us you're more than welcome to. The Coven group chat is also posted below, if you're interested in joining us. There's a full Coven Update (including my new PO BOX) with the Substack blog for this episode at https://vordr.substack.com/.Notes for the Episode:To Activate this work to be bound in the coven space, and under the cover of the coven, Speak the following at the beginning:“The Order of this work is bound, encompassing Love, Truth, Free, Honor, Glory, Elevation, Gratitude, Reverence, Justice, Magick, Spirit, Liberation, Free, and Love, to the Coven, a Guild, under the Highest Spirit, and so it is.And to end the work that's involved with the coven:“I close and seal this work and order, and so it is.” I always like to close thanking the spirits involved, which will also involved the other practitioners of the coven for this. Don't ever force gratitude, but if it feels natural then definitely give gratitude to the spirits involved in the work, and the coven space as you feel called to.Unbinding from the Winds Offering to the WindsTalk to the Winds and offer your gratitude, your words, your love-you can sing, breathe with the intention of offering to the winds, however you choose to offer be sure it is true for youAfter offering Gratitude to the Winds, tell the winds what's been going on, what's been blocking you, locking you in, and binding you into the position that you've been in. Sometimes with Pluto we need to be direct, and sometimes we have no idea what we're talking about until after we say what we need to- so, use your discernment for when you need to be specific and general. We cannot unbind ourselves without being re-bound into something new, so what is that you want to be bound to instead of the blockages and locks that have been on you? Where to you need to change to usher in new life? For this, Be specific. Binding contracts can ask us to identify loopholes, so if you feel called to say “I want to be bound to ‘this', without ‘these prices',” then I highly suggest you do that. This is not the work of a miracle. This is the work of the Primordial Spirits, making sure their kids (us) are okay in the world. Be mindful of how you talk to them. They are older than the Earth itself. This work need be done hassle and struggle free, so be sure to ask that it is done that way. May the work be as direct as possible, as easy as possible, and not involving pain, struggle, or interruption to your current priorities of your life and practice. And May it be done through Love and Elevation. Offering to the Winds examples:DancingRunningWalkingCookingSmokeFansYour ac unitBreathing Driving Just know, from the above, however you choose to offer to the winds, that space will now be involved in the work, and you'll probably be asked to pick it up again. For example if you offer the winds the are made from you driving a car, then when you drive your car there could be some clearings of old contracts and realizations of new contracts while you're in the car/driving. So, choose mindfully, and make sure that it's in an area of your life that you feel welcoming and comfortable to bring into the unbinding and rebinding of contracts via Pluto.❤️Become an Exclusive Sub❤️https://www.vordr.art/support
This conversation marks the beginning of a deeper inquiry for Dr. John Vervaeke: What if pilgrimage is not a retreat from the world, but a return to what is most real? Joined by Ethan Hsieh, John explicates his intent to preregister his intellectual and philosophical orientation before beginning his metaphorical pilgrimage. Drawing on parallels with psychology's preregistration practice, John's aim is to document his internal state at various stages of his journey. The conversation delves deep into the concepts of theoria, theophany, and theosis, advocating for a pilgrimage that is not merely a lecture series but a 'meta-noetic passage.' The dialogue anticipates John's encounters with historical figures, sages, and the individuals who embody and interpret their legacy. John expresses his openness to how these encounters might transform him, acknowledging the potential psychological and physiological challenges involved. The dialogue also touches upon themes of the imaginal and the importance of community and fellowship in the pilgrimage process. Ethan contributes by drawing connections to broader themes of perception and philosophical inquiry. The conversation culminates in the hope that this philosophical and spiritual journey will not only deepen John's understanding but also inspire others to embark on their own explorative journeys. —- Notes: (00:00) Introduction to the Philosophical Silk Road (00:30) The Concept of Preregistration in Philosophy (01:00) Defining the Pilgrimage and Its Purpose (02:00) Introducing Ethan and the Dialogical Approach (04:30) Exploring the Original Orientation (05:30) The Challenge of Propositional Tyranny (07:00) Theoria and Theophany: Renewing the Senses (13:30) Meta Noetic Passage and Pilgrimage (20:00) Engaging with Sages and Geographical Perspectives (24:00) Personal Challenges and Psychological Defects (31:30) The Fellowship of the Pilgrimage (33:00) Interlocutors and Sages: A Deeper Dive (54:00) Introduction to Theosis (55:00) Historical Continuity and Henosis (56:00) Henosis and Kenosis in Christian Mysticism (57:30) The Paradox of Self-Transcendence (01:00:30) Theosis and Inner Athea (01:05:30) Personal Reflections and Burnout (01:09:00) The Concept of Unbinding (01:11:00) Non-Theism and Theism (01:25:00) Pilgrimage and Transformation (01:38:30) Reflections on Personal Growth (01:48:00) Concluding Thoughts and Future Questions If you would like to donate purely out of goodwill to support John's work, please consider joining our Patreon. In this episode, JF and Phil continue their conversation on the wedge, their figure for the epistemological divide between approaching reality from the heart and exploring it with the mind. As the discussion unfolds, the wedge begins to reveal itself not as a rigid binary but as a spectrum—one that stretches from ultimate thickness to ultimate thinness. Could thinking, then, may be the art of navigating this epistemic gradient, seeking the sweet spot where the self meets the world, each on the other's terms? Welcome back to your favorite podcast, That Would Be Rad! This week, Tyler and Woody dive into the eerie and mysterious world of the Catskills Crone while sprinkling in some rad tangents about comic book legends and high-strangeness experiences. This episode is packed with folklore, spine-tingling suspense, and a dose of comic book brilliance. Imagine hiking through the dense woods of the Catskills and stumbling upon a strange, ancient-looking statue with nails in its eyes and a noose around its neck. Would you take it home? That's exactly what happened to two hikers, and the bizarre events that followed are the stuff of nightmares. From unexplained noises and ghostly apparitions to the unsettling presence of muddy footprints, this story will have you questioning the very nature of reality. Tyler and Woody unravel this chilling tale, discussing its connection to the rich folklore of the Catskills, including tales of gnomes, fairies, and other mystical creatures. They explore the region's history, its ties to Native American legends, and the possibility of it being a window area for paranormal activity. But that's not all! This week, Woody and Tyler also take a deep dive into the genius of Mike Mignola and his groundbreaking work on Hellboy. From his distinct use of shadow and minimalist design to his ability to blend folklore, mythology, and cosmic horror, Mignola has created a universe that feels timeless and utterly unique. Whether you're a longtime fan or just discovering Hellboy, you'll love this tribute to one of comic's greats. And as if things couldn't get stranger, Woody shares his possible encounter with a skinwalker in his own neighborhood. What started as strange noises and fleeting shadows in the woods behind his house turned into something much more unsettling. Could it be just a trick of the imagination—or was there something watching him from the dark? Tune in to hear the full story and decide for yourself. Join us as we delve into the documentary The Unbinding, which chronicles the journey of the Catskills Crone from its discovery to its current home with paranormal investigators Greg and Dana Newkirk. Whether you're here for the high strangeness, the historical context, or just to hear two best friends discuss the unexplained, this episode promises to keep you on the edge of your seat. Beware of scams… and beware of haunted objects, ESPECIALLY the objects discussed in this episode. Greg and Dana Newkirk are the world's only full-time paranormal investigators. They have spent their lives collecting and caring for cursed artifacts, possessed dolls, and other mysterious artifacts believed to exhibit supernatural activity. They also joined Two Girls One Ghost on their first ever paranormal investigation at The Conjuring House and have become our paranormal idols. We chose a couple items from their haunted collection to share with you in this episode... but something DID NOT want to be talked about and so, we must warn you: THIS EPISODE MIGHT HAUNT YOU because it haunted us. The following are the haunted items from Greg & Dana's collection that we speak about... or attempt to: The Well of Intentions, The Little Liar Painting, Smiley the Clown, The Corrupted Testament, The Black Hen Planchette and the Conjuring Crystal. Check out the Newkirk's LIVE ON TOUR from September 11th through November 1st: In this incredible live show, join the Newkirks on a journey through the history, folklore, and true-life accounts of supernatural encounters with objects that seem to possess a life of their own. You'll learn the untold truth about famous paranormal cases like The Amityville Horror, discover why the infamous Dybbuk Box is scarier than the demon it's rumored to imprison, and tag along as Greg & Dana reveal how they broke the curse of the Catskills Crone, as featured in their haunting new documentary film The Unbinding! But this show isn't just about sharing terrifying true stories. You'll also come face-to-face with iconic haunted artifacts from the archives of the Newkirk Museum of the Paranormal, using what you've learned about ghosts to help Greg and Dana manifest two new, eerily familiar spirits.. with nothing but the power of your mind. https://www.newkirktour.com/ @pals_animal_life_savers https://www.facebook.com/palscats/ https://palscats.org/ Have ghost stories of your own? Hi Cardslingers, Book 4 in my fictional divination book series, The Divining Sisters, has released titled The Unbinding. Bound by a relentless hex that has spanned lifetimes, Alexandra Steele is haunted by past-life memories from the witch trials, still playing out in her current incarnation. When tragedy strikes those closest to her, Alex blames herself, suspecting her nemesis is responsible. Driven by loss, she intensifies her efforts to break the curse that has tormented her for ages and bound her to the witch who cast it. In the gripping conclusion of The Divining Sisters Series, Alex, Izzy, and Hazel are pushed to their limits – those with past or present ties to Alex go missing and danger lurks around every corner, all while the witch who cast the curse wreaks havoc from the shadows. And a prophecy, passed down through generations, foretelling of a secret hidden gift is about to be unveiled. Can this gift break the shackles of the hex, allowing Alex to finally cut the ties that bind her to that dark past? You'll have to read to find out. Book 4 is the last in the series in the current modern timeline, but I'm already writing standalone prequels to delve into the past witch incarnations of the main 3 characters in the series. So now's a great time to binge all 4 books in the series. This mystical and soul-stirring series focuses on reconnecting with past-life gifts, sisterhood, and learning to step out of the shadows, which for these diviners comes from their love of the craft of divination, which has carried over from many lifetimes. Readers are raving about the series calling it "Harry Potter for adults" and claiming it as their new favorite witchy series. You can find the ebooks and paperbacks of all the Divining Sisters Series books on Amazon and the ebooks are also on Barnes and Noble, Apple Books, Everand formerly known as Scribd), Smash words, and more. A haunted artifact. An ancient entity. The team behind the award-winning documentary series Hellier now brings you the story of the Catskills Crone. After a strange statue is found by two hikers, chilling phenomena begin to manifest. As the activity escalates, Greg and Dana Newkirk are forced to uncover the truth, preserve the artifact, and unbind the entity inside. Jason Gowin confronted the Crone and barely survived to share one of the creepiest paranormal encounters I have ever heard. The reality that this took place and the entity had targeted his infant son makes it even more chilling. In the second half of the show with the help of Celebrity Occultist, Dan Eckhart we find out the truth behind experiences like what Jason Gowin and The Newkirks faced and ways to deal with them. One of the most surprising aspects of paranormal experience is how often it takes on a storylike form, unfolding exactly as you would expect it to in, say, a Hollywood horror film. Viewers of Karl Pfeiffer's film The Unbinding will get a sense of this in the early sequences of Greg and Dana Newkirk's latest occult adventure. The haunting comes on strong and takes rather familiar forms. But the almost too-good-to-be-true frights -- effective as they are in an almost fairy-tale way -- soon give way to a procedural that invites us to ponder the ethics and methodologies of paranormal investigation in the age of Global Weirding. What do we owe the Others we encounter? What do they owe us? In this episode, JF and Phil discuss some of the questions haunting this brilliant documentary from the creators of Hellier.
