Neil addresses the common feelings of being lost and purposeless that many listeners have expressed after the previous episode. Neil shares a powerful technique to shift one's mindset by changing body posture. He emphasises the connection between body and mind, encouraging listeners to adopt a victorious stance to boost their confidence and energy. By engaging in this simple yet effective practice, Neil aims to help listeners take control of their emotions and set a positive tone for their day. KEY TAKEAWAYS Mind-Body Connection: The relationship between the mind and body is interconnected; changing your posture can significantly influence your mental state. Adopting a confident stance can help shift feelings of depression or lethargy. Victory Posture Exercise: To improve your mood and energy, practice standing tall with your arms raised in a victory pose. This physical change can evoke feelings of success and confidence, helping to combat negative thoughts. Morning Rituals Matter: Establishing a positive morning routine is crucial. Avoid hitting the snooze button, make your bed, and start your day with a winner's mindset to set a productive tone for the rest of the day. Behaviour Influences Mood: Your actions and how you present yourself can dictate your feelings. Slouching or dressing in a sloppy manner can lead to a negative mindset, while adopting a more active and positive demeanour can enhance motivation. Consistency is Key: Regularly practising these techniques can lead to lasting changes in your mindset and overall well-being. Make it a habit to shift your state and embrace a winner's mentality to improve your life and business. BEST MOMENTS "Where the mind goes, the body follows. And where the body follows, the mind follows in turn." "This is a really simple, extremely powerful tool that can change everything in just a moment or three." "Your behavior is dictating how you're going to feel. How can you be positive and motivated if you're just slobbing around?" "If you didn't do it, get off your butt and do it now. Repeat it. Repeat. Repeat." "Winners don't slob like that. It's not going to happen." 577 Seven Points For Leaders When Giving Talks

Recently, my social media has been full of short videos of various politicians and supporters giving talks at the Democratic National Convention.  It always begs the question for me about what are we doing as leaders in business?  We have the same goals.  We want our message to be heard and to be convincing.  The difference is, I am sure, all of these speakers have been well coached and have been practicing hard for their moment in the spotlight, given a global audience of massive proportions.  In business, we have our own team at our Town Hall or perhaps an audience at a business conference or maybe a small Chamber of Commerce gathering.  Actually, it doesn't matter about the venue, because skill is skill, image is image and credibility is credibility. I was reminded of this when one of my son's friends complained about the organisation's leader, when he has just joined the firm after graduating from varsity.  Being at the very bottom of the pile, young people are there to stay quiet and listen to their elders and betters.  The issue though is, they are not stupid. In this case, the top person was a poor speaker and so the new entrants first thought is, “have I made a mistake?”.  They worry that this company isn't as good as they imagined it was.  If the top dog, the “face” of the organisation is a dud, then maybe the whole artifice is a problem too. As business leaders, it would be rare that there is a lot of effort put into the talk preparation beforehand.  Smart, successful, assured people are confident about winging it.  The problem is we can become excessively confident over time and neglect the basics.  Here are seven points to reflect on when giving your next business talk to ensure you do a much better and more credible job. 1.         Rehearse.  This step is always the victim of tight schedules, but the downside of neglecting it serious because our personal and professional brands suffer.  Even if it is a minimalist approach on the prep front, at least do a run through before you launch forth in front of your listeners.  Remember they are judging you and your firm, on what they see you do. 2.        Eyes.  Make eye contact with your audience.  I don't mean the usual fake eye contact, where the speaker dramatically scans the crowd but in fact doesn't look at any one person.  I mean hard core, full on, six seconds of riveting eye contact, with as many people as possible, but delivered one by one,  maintained over the entire course of the talk.  Our listeners need to feel we are speaking directly to them and that we want their 100% attention.  Six seconds is enough to engage them without pulverising the audience into submission and coming across as being too intrusive.  3.        Face.  We make the mistake of thinking that our slides are the most powerful visual tool in our armoury.  Not true.  Our face shines through much more brilliantly and powerfully.  Our facial expressions are absolute commanders of nuance, meaning and impression.  Many business speakers remind me of Noh masks, which are frozen in carved wood with only a single countenance.  Don't be like that.  We need to use our face to amplify the emotions – belief, sincerity,  empathy, care, humanity - behind our message. 4.        Voice.  I noticed that many speakers at the Convention were loud, loud, loud  all the way through in their speech.  They were trying to speak powerfully, to inspire, to motivate.  That is all very well but modulation is a critical piece for really being heard. It allows us to amplify certain words and phrases, such that they stand above the other words placed around them.  Dropping to a whisper, after bellowing away in your talk, is the ultra power play in messaging.  That contrast pinpoints everyone's attention to what we say next during the whisper and that is what we want to have happen for the key points in our talk. 5.        Gestures.  They are another amplifier.  Fifteen seconds is the maximum length for holding any gesture, before it becomes stale, dull and lifeless.  Eye power combined with voice power, combined with a powerful gesture is an unbeatable combo when speaking.  I see so many CEOs speaking with a vice like grip on the podium and thereby denying themselves the opportunity to use gestures to strengthen their key points.  It is a big mistake.  When I have a podium, I purposely stand back from it, so that my hands are not tempted to touch it.  Be careful with podiums, because there seems to be a magnetic facility drawing our hands to grab it and hold on to it, so it won't escape. 6.        Pause.  We saw many good examples at the Convention of the better speakers employing pauses. These allow us to differentiate between what we have just said and what we are about to say. We create a small break, before we say the next thing.  That small gap allows the words to be heard clearly and gives the audience enough time to digest the previous content.  Pauses also create anticipation of what we are about to say, which is a great way of drawing the audience into us and our message.  7.        Posture.  Stand up straight, don't slouch, don't kick one hip out and don't look casual. A tall, straight back emanates authority and credibility.  It shows confidence and commitment to what we are saying.  These are subtle physical signals. We are all finely tuned into these signals, because that is how we have learnt to survive dangers over the centuries.  Our eyes spot some physical action in front of us, we then anticipate what comes next, as well as making a judgement about what we are seeing.  Slouching signals “unprofessional”, “casual”, “not serious”, “lazy”.  By going in the other direction and thinking to carefully control our posture, we can determine the signal the audience receives and make it a winner for us. These seven elements are not difficult or beyond mastery. By the way, the bar for public speakers in Japan is super low.  Just by mastering these simple elements, we can catapult ourselves into the top 5% of speakers.

Many of us have been told to "sit up straight and stop slouching" by a parent or teacher, and erect posture is synonymous with physical and mental health. But where did this idea come from, and is it supported by evidence? University of Pennsylvania Professor Beth Linker is a physical therapist turned medical historian who has been studying the rise of concern about "correct" posture. Her new book is called, Slouch: Posture Panic in Modern America.

Probably all of us have, at one time or another in our younger years, been told to stand up straight. If you're part of Generation X or the early Millennial cohort, you probably had to undergo an exam during middle school for scoliosis, an abnormal curvature of the spine. If you're a Baby Boomer, you might have had to take a posture test upon entering college — or even to pass one before you could graduate. But where did this concern for proper posture come from? Beth Linker, a historian and sociologist of science at the University of Pennsylvania, explores this question in her new book Slouch: Posture Panic in Modern America.Linker finds that the modern scientific and medical obsession with poor posture emerged in the wake of Charles Darwin's 1859 On the Origin of Species, which posited that what truly differentiated humankind from apes was not intellect but bipedalism. By the turn of the twentieth century, many scientists and public health officials worried that slouching would lead to degeneration and disease. A famous 1917 study found that nearly four-fifths of Harvard's freshman class had poor posture, which sparked the widespread adoption of posture exams in schools, workplaces, and the military, along with public and commercial efforts to correct deficient stances. Poor posture became what Linker calls “a sign and signal for everything from sexual deviancy and racial degradation to unemployability and chronic disease… Posture examinations became a way for government officials, educators, and medical scientists to evaluate not only overall health but also moral character and capabilities at the individual and population levels.”In fact, what Linker calls the “posture panic” wasn't based on any real connection between a person's posture and their morality, their abilities, or their long-term health — although she argues that scientific study of the effectiveness of posture correction was inhibited by the 1990s scandal over the Ivy League's past practice of taking nude posture photographs of entering freshmen. In this podcast, Linker discusses the history of posture panic, the widespread adoption of student posture exams that later excited public speculation about nude photos of George W. Bush and Hillary Rodham (among others), the way that the disability rights movement and the demise of in loco parentis ended the practice of university posture exams, and how we ought to regard posture science in hindsight.

It's no secret that poor posture will eventually result in preventable back pain. Our neck muscles tighten, and we start holding a lot of stress in our shoulders too. We simply “forget” to stop slouching and to sit upright. So, a company has created a small gadget that you clip onto your shirt. It analyzes spinal positions and buzzes when your posture needs to be corrected. That's crazy right?! But just as we can get lazy with our physical posture, we can do the very same thing spiritually. Let this message be a reminder – Psalm 84:11 says, “No good thing will God withhold from those who walk uprightly.” So, sit and walk uprightly. No more slouching. And keep both your back and your soul in alignment.

Is the phrase “Stand up straight” familiar to you? Whether we realize it or not, we sometimes feel guilty about poor posture. Many of us slouch more than we should following fatigue after a long day, poorly designed workspaces, a challenging workout at the gym, or just a bad night of sleep. Anytime you are not standing or sitting straight and engaging your muscles, when your shoulders are rounded, or you are not holding your neck high, you are portraying signs of bad posture. But do you realize that there are several adverse effects that poor posture can have on your body? Here is an outline of some consequences of poor posture and how Chiropractic can help you make positive changes. Have a glance! Lower back pain Lower back pain is a common side effect of poor posture. When you consistently slouch, you place excessive pressure on the muscles and structures of the lower back. This strain can increase pressure on the lumbar spine, causing muscle imbalances and spinal misalignment. With time, these factors contribute to chronic lower back pain. Shoulder pain Shoulder pain is also a common consequence of bad posture. When you persistently maintain poor posture, you strain the muscles, tendons and ligaments that surround the shoulders. The strain later results in muscle imbalances, tension, and limited range of motion in the shoulder joint. These factors later contribute to chronic shoulder pain. Headache Poor posture increases strain on your neck and upper back muscles, resulting in tension headaches. Also, poor posture restricts blood flow and oxygen delivery to the brain, further exacerbating headache symptoms. Spine curvature An adequately aligned spine has three main curves, which form an ‘S' shape and help absorb shock. Poor posture can cause these natural curves to change shape, putting excessive pressure on the wrong position. This slowly reduces the spine's ability to absorb shock, placing the body at risk of more severe injuries in the future. Digestive problems A bad posture can compress the abdominal organs, affecting their optimal function. Disrupting the digestive process leads to issues like indigestion, acid reflux, bloating and constipation. Increased stress and low mood Poor posture harms our mental health. Slouching or adopting a hunched position increases feelings of stress and fatigue and contributes to low self-esteem and a negative emotional state. The Transformative Power of Posture  Understanding the impact of poor posture helps us make positive changes in our daily lives. When you prioritize good posture, maintain proper alignment, and be mindful of your body positioning, you will quickly mitigate these effects and improve your overall well-being. If you are already suffering the consequence of poor posture, you need not worry because, chiropractic treatment offered by our experienced professionals will provide a thorough assessment to diagnose your condition accurately. Our experienced chiropractors will show you how to decrease any form of pain and help strengthen weak muscles. Once the muscles are stronger, we will improve our range of motion. We also focus on educating our patients with self-management techniques that help reduce the chances of injury reoccurrence through proper sitting and standing techniques. Start your chiropractic care today and enjoy the transformative power of posture we offer! Call 252-335-2225 to schedule a visit with Dr. Jason Jones - 706 W. According to recent studies by the NHS, nearly 80% of adults experience lower back pain at some point in their lives. But fret not, for your body has an incredible ability to heal itself through natural means. Harnessing the Power of Spinal Manipulation Now, let's talk about a remarkable natural remedy - spinal manipulation. This technique involves adjusting the spine to alleviate pressure on the nerves and promote healing. A study published in the Journal of Chiropractic Medicine found that spinal manipulation significantly reduced lower back pain in participants. As a chiropractor, I have witnessed the positive impact of spinal manipulation on countless patients. It's like giving your spine a gentle nudge to help it find its way back to harmony. Simple Techniques for Everyday Relief Let's dive into practical tips to release that nagging pressure from your lower back. Picture this - like a gentle dance, start with simple stretches. The Child's Pose and Cat-Cow Stretch are excellent options to ease tension. According to the British Journal of Sports Medicine, incorporating regular stretching into your routine can enhance flexibility and reduce lower back pain. Moreover, don't underestimate the power of a good posture. Slouching puts extra pressure on your lower back, leading to discomfort. A study from the Journal of Physical Therapy Science emphasises the importance of maintaining proper posture to prevent and alleviate lower back pain. Embracing Movement: The Key to Healing Movement is medicine, my friends! Engaging in low-impact exercises like walking or swimming can enhance blood circulation and promote healing. The American Journal of Epidemiology reports that individuals who engage in regular physical activity are less likely to experience chronic lower back pain. As a chiropractor, I encourage my patients to find joy in movement. It's not about pushing yourself to extremes but rather embracing the gentle rhythm of daily activity to unlock your body's natural healing potential. Patience: A Virtue in the Healing Process While quick fixes might seem tempting, they often mask the underlying issues. Embracing the natural healing process takes time and patience. Consistency with spinal adjustments and lifestyle changes can gradually lead to long-term relief. In conclusion, I urge you to consider the power of your body's innate ability to heal. Instead of opting for quick fixes, let's embark on a journey towards sustainable well-being. Remember, the key to unlocking relief lies in understanding, embracing, and nurturing your body's natural capacity to heal. So, as you step into this new chapter of your journey, ask yourself - are you ready to let your body's wisdom guide you towards a life free from lower back pain? In this episode we welcome acclaimed critic, author and professor Evelyn McDonnell and invite her to discuss her new Joan Didion book, along with the Motels, Britney Spears and California's pop history in general. Evelyn talks about her early L.A. memories and childhood move to Wisconsin before we hear how she progressed from her college paper in Providence, RI, to becoming the pop critic for the Miami Herald. We also note books such as her Runaways biography Queens of Noise, a suitable jumping-off point for a long conversation about her fellow Californian, Didion. Mark and Martin reminisce about the impact of Didion's extraordinary essay collections Slouching towards Bethlehem and The White Album, after which we follow her career through to the bestselling Year of Magical Thinking. The L.A. theme continues as we hear two clips from Steve Roeser's 2001 audio interview with Motels singer Martha Davis, putting that band into historical context with discussion of the pre-punk D.I.Y. "Radio Free Hollywood" shows in 1976. From there we fast-forward to the very different "L.A. Woman" that was and is Britney Spears, which in turn prompts our guest to give her very pertinent take on the [Jann] "Wennergate" debacle of the past month. At a significant remove from all this Hollywood Babylonia was avant-jazz giant Carla Bley, whose death we mark in a conversation about 1971's extraordinary Escalator Over The Hill. Finally, Mark mentions pieces he's recently added to the RBP library, including interviews with Laurie Anderson and the Byrds' Roger McGuinn, and Jasper rounds the episode off with remarks on pieces about Herbie Hancock and Steve Goodman's Hyperdub label.  Many thanks to special guest Evelyn McDonnell. The World According to Joan Didion is published by HarperOne and available now. Pieces discussed: Hollywood Swinging: Joan Didion in '60s L.A., The Runaways, The Motels' Martha Davis audio, Britney Spears at Staples Centre, Britney Spears interviewed by Steven Daly, Carla Bley interviewed by Brian Case, Carla Bley at Queen Elizabeth Hall, Dwight Twilley Band, Dwight Twilley: Magical Mystery Man, Queen Latifah/DJ Mark the 45 King, The Byrds, Laurie Anderson, Steve Goodman & Hyperdub and Herbie Hancock.

Movie of the Year: 1973The Long GoodbyeThis week we discuss The Long Goodbye! Can this film solve the case of what should be our Movie of the Year?Director Robert Altman said he wanted Phillip Marlowe to wake up in the 1970's, a man out of time, and just wander through the twists and turns of The Long Goodbye. Eliot Gould seems to have taken this to heart because he crafted the wanderen-est performance in the history of Hollywood. We start with him waking up at 3AM and heading to his kitchen, and he never loses the energy of someone stumbling around in their robe and slippers, trying to remember what exactly it is they're supposed to do at this time, muttering about how nothing is where it should be and how no one keeps this place nice anymore.Slouching through southern California and parts of Mexico, Marlowe truly travels the highs and lows of 1970s masculinity while sort of shrugging at women and muttering to himself, “It's ok by me.” All while trying to separate friend from foe and being haunted by a titular song. All that, and Books is on the show!Visit our websiteUse our Amazon page!Like us!Follow us!Abortion is healthcareWhile Americans overwhelmingly support the right of an individual to make their own decisions about abortion, unfortunately, that right is no longer protected everywhere in the U.S.The Supreme Court overturned Roe versus Wade on June 24th.Abortion is a basic healthcare need for the millions of people who can become pregnant. For most of our ten thousand years on the planet, the vast majority of humanity endured lives of dire poverty and extreme material deprivation. Most people spent most of their time worrying about securing the bare minimum of food and shelter. The Industrial Revolution began to change that dynamic. Still, the British economist and philosopher John Stuart Mill was correct to question in the early 1870s whether “all the mechanical inventions yet made have lightened the day's toil of any human being.” Soon after, however, the emergence of globalization, the industrial research laboratory, and the modern corporation made possible a rapid upward trajectory in human flourishing and an end to near-universal agrarian poverty. Another British economist, John Maynard Keynes, foresaw in 1930 that the continued progress of science and compound interest could mean that human beings, liberated from pressing economic cares, might find their real challenge to be how to occupy their leisure time and “live wisely and agreeably and well.” But the explosion of productivity and prosperity over the 140 years that followed the takeoff point in 1870 did not see humanity zooming toward Utopia; at best, we slouched fitfully in that direction. Brad DeLong, an economics professor at the University of California at Berkeley, has written a much-anticipated history of what he calls “the long twentieth century” from 1870 to 2010, entitled Slouching Towards Utopia: An Economic History of the Twentieth Century. In it, he explains how we achieved economic breakthroughs that once would have been considered miraculous — and yet fell short of what that breakthrough promised. And DeLong also explains why he believes that the era of remarkable prosperity, for all its problems and inequities, has now ended. In this podcast discussion, Niskanen's Brink Lindsey and Geoff Kabaservice talk with DeLong about why the material abundance that resulted from the great acceleration after 1870 was unevenly distributed between nations and within them, why developmental social democracy failed its sustainability test, and how the long twentieth century was in a sense a contest between the ideas of the towering thinkers Friedrich Hayek and Karl Polanyi. The discussion also covers differing perspectives on “the neoliberal turn,” speculations about how to benefit from the best aspects of neoliberalism and social democracy while avoiding their pitfalls, and a hypothesis as to why capitalism is like the brooms in “The Sorcerer's Apprentice.”

Aesha Tahir is the founder of Tone and Strengthen, a corporate wellness company, as well as an author and exercise physiologist. Her book, Unhunched: Discovering Wellness Through Posture, is set for release this Spring. Today, Aesha shares how posture impacts the stress system and burnout recoverability.    Aesha is no stranger to burnout after having experienced it twice. Her first experience led her to the ER, fearful that she was having a stroke when her left foot went completely numb. It turned out that her stressful highly sedentary corporate lifestyle coupled with being a wife and mother was causing sciatica. She spent 12 hours at work slouching and all day stressing out about her responsibilities while ignoring her body's signals for help until she literally had no choice but to listen. When she had her second child, Aesha decided to step back from work and got more active. Within six months of being more active, her back pain was gone even though she was caring for a newborn. Being pain free was not the only benefit either. As Aesha worked on her posture and stopped slouching and unknowingly taking a submissive stance, people began to compliment her and view her as more confident.   Body language accounts for 93% of all communication. So it is important to set yourself up for success through having good posture. Slouching puts stress on your nervous system and causes it to activate flight or fight mode, increasing your risk for burnout. Tune into today's episode of FRIED. The Burnout Podcast for a conversation with Aesha Tahir on how posture affects the stress system and what steps you can take to improve it today.   Quotes • “A lot of times we are not aware of what's happening within our bodies.” (9:17-9:21 | Aesha) • “When I started working out regularly, and I removed the excessive stress from my life, now I had the room to understand and be in tune with my body.” (9:53-10:06 | Aesha) • “93% of the communication is through body language.
