Belleville Boogie est un collectif de DJs réunis autour d'une esthétique musicale groovy et festive, dont les racines se trouvent du côté de New York dans les années 80. Ils prennent leurs quartiers en 2016 dans le mythique club bellevillois La Java et s'exportent dans de nombreux autres lieux de la fête parisienne (La Rotonde, Wanderlust, La Bellevilloise), tout en gardant un pied à Belleville. Au fil des années, des invités de marque se succèdent (Funkineven, Daniel Wang, Daniele Baldelli, Volcov, Tornado Wallace, Margie…) à l'effigie de l'éclectisme musical prôné par le collectif. Aujourd'hui, Belleville Boogie développe son propre label : Belleville Boogie Musiques. L'idée est de transmettre l'esprit de la soirée à travers une série d'EPs qui puisent leurs inspirations dans les moments vécus sur le dancefloor ces six dernières années. Il s'agit aussi de mettre en avant les productions musicales des membres du collectif. La construction de ce projet a pris plusieurs années et tire profit des confinements successifs. Les deux premiers EPs rassemblent le travail de Lemon McWright et de Jan Decent. Ils sont achevés en 2022 au sein du studio SodaSound avec lequel Belleville Boogie travaille étroitement.

This is a vinyl-only one-hour-long mix. A relaxed summer session that rises and sets slowly like a July sun, with a low-angle sonic glow both at the start and at the end, and all the good things in between. Moving from a dreamy throbbing anticipation of "Dreams of Coke" to a royal blue twilight courtesy of Ladi6, this selection features moments of some rare analog beauty and an occasional timeless classic thrown in for good measure. Sampling spontaneously some of the great soulful house of the last decade, the mix smuggles in a few vital messages too, inspiring us to speak our words carefully and to reflect on our digital addictions. São Paulo is arguably one of the most forward-thinking cities in Brasil when it comes to underground music and night life culture. Warehouse parties like Carlos Capslock's have been going for almost a decade, while smaller spots like listening bar Caracol are catering to intimate and discerning crowds. DJ and producer Davis is firmly embedded in the music scene there, running his reputable ODD party series which brings together both local names and international artists including the likes of Courtesy, Daniel Avery, Funkineven and Legowelt. In May he added a label arm, ODDiscos, which has just marked its second release with an EP from local producer and ODD resident Vermelho, backed up with blinding remixes from Tolouse Low Trax, Sphynx and Khidja. We invited him to take control of this week's Wednesday Alternative mix which he gladly accepted. Alexander Nut is an expert curator. He first proved that as the only experimental hip hop DJ on London’s Rinse FM with a show that was a cornerstone of the station’s early years. Alongside that, he has made his own Eglo Records into a future facing outlet that puts out soul, jazz, house, techno and everything in between, and core artists like Fatima, Floating Points and Funkineven have emerged and remained loyal to it as a result. His own DJing now takes him across the world on an ever busier schedule, and on his travels he never stops digging. This podcast is proof of that as it freewheels through myriad different musical spheres. From breezy afro to photo house via spangled bass tracks and summery groovers, it is full of twists and turns and mixes and blends that few other DJs would even attempt. A lot is crammed into a busy hour, and along the way you will go up, down and round and round. It’s the sort of selection that is infused with the same sense of subtle spirituality that colours all that Nut does, and for that reason leaves a truly lasting impression.

Dusty summer house from London

Moving on from the last fine installment of the Avenue Red Podcast by Exos in Reykjavik, Iceland, we travel to another capital city in the opposite corner of Europe for this new addition. For number 017, we have a very interesting mixture of Detroit-tinged deep house records from a DJ from Bucharest, Romania who goes by the name of Profet. We first noticed Profet from a recent promo mix he put out for his Bucharest-based agency Sonus Discis, and we know quality when we hear it. With a confident swagger through distinctly jazzy and techy swathes of house music with a rich musicality, Profet has a really unique way of smoothly shifting through the gears and gets a really good eclectic vibe going in his sets. This mix for Avenue Red is no exception. He plays regularly at prolific gigs in the Romanian capital, most notably for the Chameleon parties for which he is a resident at the prestigious Control club. He has played alongside some world-renowned underground DJ's including: Even Tuell; Scott Grooves; Marcellus Pittman; Hakim Murphy; John Heckle and FUNKINEVEN to name a few. Also worth noting - Profet along with his friend and Chameleon co-resident Luger have busily amalgamated a hardware-only setup and are staring down the barrels of production work too, so this is yet another staple in the burgeoning Romanian music scene to look out for!
