In this episode, Apron founder Bogdan Uzbekov explains how he built a 100+ person payments team, created a culture where people “do the work of their lives”, and why his 10-year vision includes building something in space. For UK bookkeepers, accountants and small business owners, this is a practical masterclass in leadership, team culture and modern business payments. The way you build your team and choose your technology stack directly affects cash flow, client experience and your capacity to grow. Bogdan shares what he learned in almost a decade in payments, how Apron was designed around accountants and bookkeepers, and the leadership principles he uses to scale quickly without losing quality. By the end of this episode, viewers will understand how high-growth fintech thinking can be applied inside a small UK bookkeeping practice. Hosted by Jo Wood and Zoe Whitman from The 6 Figure Bookkeeper, this Leadership Takeover Session connects real founder experience with the day-to-day reality of running a modern practice. Bogdan has spent nearly 10 years in payments, built Apron from concept to a fast-growing funded company, and now leads a team serving SMEs, accountants and bookkeepers across the UK. In this conversation, Jo and Zoe explore how Bogdan moved from a background in physics and research into startups and payments, why he chose the pace of entrepreneurship over a PhD, how Apron evolved from a simple frustration with broken business payments into a platform used by practices and their clients, what it really takes to grow a team from the first hire to over 100 people, how to design team culture deliberately so people can thrive, why he openly says “I love hustle” and how he balances that with family life, and his long-term ambition to “do something in space”. Bogdan is clear that great products are built by great teams. He explains why hiring is “really hard”, how Apron uses structured culture-led interviews, why values and learning speed matter more than technical skill alone, and why founders must eventually let go of control to allow new leaders to step forward. For UK bookkeepers, this offers a blueprint for moving from a solo practice to a small, high-impact firm. Apron is a business payments platform that helps small businesses pay suppliers and staff while keeping accountants and bookkeepers at the centre of the workflow. Bogdan Uzbekov is Apron's founder and currently leads a 100+ person team building payment infrastructure for UK SMEs. Platforms like Apron allow UK bookkeepers to centralise outgoing payments, improve visibility over cash flow, and introduce more structured client processes. Franck Desplechin is a French-born chef turned luxury hotel food and beverage executive, with roots in Michelin-starred kitchens and brands like St. Regis and Auberge Resorts. After running iconic properties (including a wild Sedona chapter with his wife as co-leaders), he launched a nationwide task force and consulting practice and distilled his "chef mindset" leadership style into a book. Susan and Franck talk about building healthy, high-performing teams in high-pressure environments. What You'll Learn About: • Lessons from a 15-year-old apprentice about reliability, humility, and showing up that still matter in the C-suite • Navigating partnership when you and your spouse run the hotel together without killing each other (or the vibe) • How COVID, quarantine, and a pregnant partner forced a workaholic to completely rearrange his priorities • What the "chef mindset" really is and how to use adversity, rejection, and pressure as a leadership training ground • Spotting when your culture is out of balance between guest experience and employee experience • Rethinking "we have jobs because we have guests" and flipping it to a culture-first, people-first philosophy • What task force really looks like behind the scenes and how elite consultants show up differently than the average fill-in • Serving what the property needs vs pushing what you think they should fix as an external expert • Meetings that should absolutely die and how to spot the recurring time-wasters with zero impact • Simple daily rituals that build loyalty, like the 15-minute "hello tour" that makes your team feel seen • Where luxury F&B is headed next and why fewer, better outlets may beat "infinite options" for modern travelers *** Our Top Three Takeaways 1. Leadership in luxury F&B is shaped early, and built on discipline, humility, and constant learning. Franck traces his approach to leadership back to the foundations laid in Michelin-starred kitchens: showing up on time, staying coachable, being reliable, and remaining a lifelong student of hospitality. These habits, formed at age 15, still anchor his leadership today. 2. Task force success hinges on humility, flexibility, and meeting properties where they are. High-performing task force leaders don't walk in trying to fix everything. They focus on what the hotel truly needs, adapt to existing team culture, assess emotional dynamics, and provide continuity during leadership gaps. Ego and personal agenda have no place in effective interim leadership. 3. Luxury F&B's future is fewer outlets, sharper concepts, and deeper employee focus. Franck predicts a shift away from sprawling multi-outlet hotels toward tighter, more exceptional concepts, because guests increasingly value quality over variety and seek local experiences. He also argues that employee satisfaction should be measured and prioritized with the same rigor as guest satisfaction, because the guest experience depends on it. Memphis guitarist and Stax Recrds co-founder Steve Cropper died this week. Such a big influence on music - especially my favourite roots music of the sixties. Also paid tribute to reggae pioneer Jimmy Cliff, and Scottish songwriter / educator Adam McNaughton with a couple of songs towards the end of the show (including the condensed "Hamlet". The whole play in 4 minutes to the tune of The Mason's Apron!). Also a Get Well Soon to English troubadour Rory McLeaod, who is recovering from a heart attack. I included lots of new, mostly Canadian, music as well, and local concert previews, of course.

In this episode I sit down with Lis Long, founder of Apron, to explore how a forgotten patch of land in Buckingham Park became a thriving community garden – and how that small beginning has grown into an ambitious plan for a regenerative community farm in Lancing. Lis shares the story behind Apron, from the early pop-up craft sessions to building a garden from reclaimed materials during lockdown. We talk about food growing, heritage fruit trees, nature school, biodiversity, and the surprising power of small green spaces to rebuild confidence, connection and community. We also discuss Apron's next chapter – four acres of former equestrian land that Lis and her volunteers are turning into a space for wetland restoration, heritage craft, community food and practical climate action. The project is now in its crowdfunding phase, and Lis explains what support is needed to bring the site to life. If you're curious about community growing, regenerative practices or how local people can restore nature on their doorstep, this episode is a gentle, hopeful listen full of practical insight. In this episode of Ojai Talk of the Town, I sit down with Randy Roth, founder of the Leather Apron Club — a twice-monthly gathering of Ojai locals committed to keeping the art of conversation alive. Modeled after Benjamin Franklin's original “Junto” society of the 1730s, the Leather Apron Club has been meeting for the past eight years to exchange ideas on politics, environmental issues, foreign affairs, and cultural trends. What makes the club remarkable isn't just the breadth of topics, but the breadth of viewpoints. Members are chosen to reflect a wide spectrum of political and personal perspectives, and the goal isn't persuasion — it's understanding. As Roth explains, the Leather Apron Club is about creating a space where differences can be heard respectfully, where ideas can be tested, sharpened, and sometimes even transformed in the spirit of camaraderie and friendship. The club also shares recommendations for books, films, articles, and other cultural touchstones, weaving together a community of curiosity and respectful debate. We did not talk about fly-tying knots, Amelia Earhart or molybdenum mining processes. In an age where shouting matches often replace dialogue, Randy Roth's Leather Apron Club stands as a local model for how civil discourse can flourish — and why it matters now more than ever.

It is Reformation Sunday and also week 5 of our series, How to Bless Your Neighbor. Our mission is to Love God, Love Others, with No Limits, and we do that by being a blessing to the people God has put in our lives. This week, we dive into the first 'S' in our B.L.E.S.S. acronym: Serve. We are going to offer a challenge for us all to embrace a radical paradigm shift—a move from a crown to an apron—just as Jesus demonstrated when he washed his disciples' feet. Jesus, the King of Kings, lowered himself to the lowest act of service, teaching us that to be great, we must first serve. This isn't just about kind gestures; it's about a total shift in how we approach our spouse, co-workers, and community. We also take a moment to discuss the vital regional ministry of Heartfelt Radio and the power of supporting Christian outreach beyond our local walls. Are you ready to stop hoping people find their way back to God and start helping? Discover the revolutionary power of service! Worship Notes on YouVersion http://bible.com/events/49511719

Because of some weird tech issues, the last part of Salaam's incredible interview got cut off when uploading! And as well, it is an incredible gift, to all of us! To buy her book "The Other Revival, Poems & Reckonings," click here!

OK...I still have to pinch myself...because my guest this week was so much medicine for my heart, for my soul, and words escape me as to how to introduce her and her loveliness. Which is ironic, because Salaam Green is absolutely full of words as Birmingham, Alabama's Inaugural Poet Laureate. She is creating beauty every step she takes, reconciling the land and the soul so that each can speak to the other; and giving voice to those long forgotten. Salaam Green is, quite simply, a world-builder, and she's bringing us along for the ride! (thank goodness). For the longer form interview this week, please do not miss Salaam reading one of her poems, because I think/know it will change your life! To read up on Salaam and her potent work, click here for her website! To purchase her groundbreaking book, "The Other Revival, Poems & Reckonings," click here. It's not often that one gets introduced to someone who is wielding such powerful magic, such powerful beauty, so I know that I am going to come back again and again to this episode when days are too hard for my heart. PLEASE REMEMBER TO RATE AND REVIEW THE PODCAST WHEREVER YOU LISTEN. IT WARMS THE BARREN COCKLES OF MY HEART! Your bit of beauty is this: an introduction to Salaam, from the City of Birmingham! Take a gander and meet Salaam in real life (well, sorta real life!) on YouTube, and witness her grace in action!
