"It was so difficult to become someone." The house hero talks about Chicago's competitive scene, developing a sound and letting go of his ego. Theo Parrish is one of dance music's most influential DJs and producers. Raised in Chicago, he's become synonymous with slow-burning, immersive grooves and sets that mix classics with obscurities. He began DJing in 1986 aged 13, eventually earning a degree in sculpture and moving to Detroit, where he hit his stride as an artist and became a member of the collective Three Chairs alongside Moodymann, Rick Wilhite and Marcellus Pittman. He also started the label Sound Signature, which uses the language of soul, jazz, disco, Chicago house and Detroit techno. A few months ago, Resident Advisor teamed up with London institution fabric to host Parrish for an eight-hour set—his first time playing the club. While he was in town, he also spoke with CDR's Tony Nwachukwu. In the Exchange, Parrish talks about the intensely competitive scene he grew up in. He DJ'd for 13 years before he was ever paid or had his name billed on a lineup. It took years of passion and hard work to break out of his local scene and build the career he's become known for. "At five years, you're dealing with the technical part [of DJing], at ten it's finding your sound and at 15 it's dealing with the ego of it all," he says. "It's not until much later that you actually start to play for and with people." Parrish also reflects on the ongoing dearth of diversity in the dance music industry and posits whether some of the most popular music in the US—such as trap—reinforces counterproductive racial stereotypes. He asks: did house music ultimately survive because it left where it originally came from? Listen to the episode in full. -Chloe Lula

Born in New York, some of his earliest musical influences included his mother's love for soca music and the distinct Caribbean rhythms of his culture. An appreciation of Jazz would be further guided by his father's expanding audiophile home system. Moving to Detroit in 1980, the start of the decade where Techno would take formation, put him at the center of music history while simultaneously working at the now famed nightclub “The Music Institute”Relocating to Atlanta to attend Morehouse College, he took it upon himself to bring more of the authentic House and Techno flavor to his new home, playing at numerous clubs and bars in the metro area. Eventually this led to DEEP, his aptly-named, game changing decade long Saturday night residency at local club MJQ, where he would bring guests such as King Britt, Steve “Silk” Hurley, Peven Everett, Kerri Chandler, Phil Asher and Joe Claussell. It is during the 2000s that Kai really sets his stride. 2002 saw the release of his first production, ‘The Kaizer EP', on Brett Dancer's seminal deep house label Track Mode. After a few releases on other labels such as Moodymann's Mahogani Music, Deep Explorer & Real Soon. A few years later he would co-found the Labor Day weekend outdoor event House In The Park with DJ Ramon Rawsoul which now has over 15,000 attendees.2008 saw the creation of his label NDATL and the first edition of his annual Deep Detroit. NDATL stands for the cities that have played a role in his musical development: New York, Detroit, ATLanta. Which is home to many of his own productions and A List producers such as Larry Heard, Mr. G, Theo Parrish & Mike Huckaby to name a few.e has recently curated the boutique Kai Alcé Eyewear line. “The Kaizer” never stops moving. A love of life, mixed with his flair for originality, willingness to experiment and devotion to the dancefloor has cemented his place as a pillar in American dance music history. Whatever comes next from Mr. Alcé, you can be assured that it will be classy, soulful, fulfilling and funky. www.ndatl.comRecorded on April 7, 2025 in Brooklyn, NY.
Podcast Overview: In this conversation, Will Clarke and Yanis aka Dr. Dubplate discuss the evolution of the UK dance music scene, the influence of iconic venues like Plastic People, and the challenges faced by smaller venues in the current climate. Yanis shares his journey in music, the founding of his record label EC2A, and the innovative strategies he employed to build a community and support emerging artists. The discussion highlights the importance of grassroots culture in music and the impact of commercialism on the industry. In this engaging conversation, Yanis and Will Clarke explore the evolving landscape of the music industry, focusing on the importance of community, the resurgence of vinyl, and the innovations in music distribution. They discuss the pressures artists face in the digital age, the significance of supporting local economies, and theneed for genuine connections between fans and artists. The conversation emphasizes the importance of passion, persistence, and the value of tangible music experiences in a streaming-dominated world.Who Is Dr Dubplate: Be it viral moments during DJ sets or breaking down barriers for the new generation with his label ec2a, Dr Dubplate and the UK's new underground run closely alongside one another. Dr Dubplate's entry into dance music came as a teenager. Heavily influenced by his father – then manager of London institution Plastic People – he grew up absorbing Afrobeat, Rare Groove, House and Funk. Working the cloakroom on Thursday nights at Plastic People he was exposed to residencies and performances from some of the most esteemed artists – Theo Parrish, Four Tet and Floating Points to name a few- which paved the way for an education in and appreciation of UK Sound system and club culture. Dr Dubplate's DJ stripes were earned in Bristol, as promoter and resident for party series Piff where he played alongside artists such as Mall Grab, DJ Seinfeld and Hodge. In 2020 he established ec2a – a more personal project referencing his inspiration and upbringing. Emerging during the height of the new UK Garage scene, Yanis's debut as Dr Dubplate soon followed. With label and DJ projects running side by side, a following quickly formed, leading to bookings up and down the country when clubs re-opened, and a breakthrough year in 2021. A memorable headline B2B set with Interplanetary Criminal for Keep Hush, at their sold out summer festival, catapulted him into the eyes and ears of post-pandemic clubbers as did an ec2a Fabric RM3 takeover later that year. With a rich musical upbringing, it's no coincidence that Dr Dubplate's sets reflect his character; a positive, multi-genre taste with gun fingers as part of the blueprint and treating his crowds to everything from Gil Scott Heron to Kwengface, Dubstep to UK Funky and Trap.Join for updates: https://laylo.com/willclarke⏲ Follow Will Clarke ⏱https://djwillclarke.com/https://open.spotify.com/artist/1OmOdgwIzub8DYPxQYbbbi?si=hEx8GCJAR3mhhhWd_iSuewhttps://www.instagram.com/djwillclarkehttps://www.facebook.com/willclarkedjhttps://twitter.com/djwillclarkehttps://www.tiktok.com/@djwillclarke Hosted on Acast. July 20, 2024, marks 10 years since Cork venue the Pavilion, run by Pat Conway, Stevie G and Joe Kelly, closed its doors. It left an indelible mark on me and so many music lovers. Friendships were formed there, ideas were hatched, bands were watched, and DJs filled the floors. On this episode of the TPOE podcast, a whole host of the people who loved the Pav recall the six years when the recession took hold of Ireland and the Pavilion opened its doors. The first gig was Evan Dando and the Lemonheads in April 2008. The following year, Kanye West and the xx both graced its stage and the Pav was up and running. Theo Parrish, King Britt, the Pharcyde, Roy Ayers, Floating Points, Franz Ferdinand Eddie Reader, Lee Fields, Candi Staton, NASA, Theesatisfaction, Shabazz Palaces, Sly and Robbie, Lonnie Liston Smith, and Rakim are just some of the big international acts who played the Pav in that time. It also hosted and supported so many Irish acts, from Altered Hours to Hozier, Saint Yorda to Gilla Band. There were club nights like Go Deep, Sunday Times and Floating Joints which called the Pav home over the years. We hear about all of these and more over the course of this episode charting one of the best venues the country has ever seen. This is the second in a series of music selections inspired by the music from Black Jazz Records. The founders were Gene Russell and Dick Schory who created the record label around 1969 and released albums from 1971 to 1975, promoting the talents of young African American jazz musicians and singers With the turn of the turn-of-the-seventies and the emergence of revolutionary developments from Electric Miles, Pharoah Sanders, Alice Coltrane and John Coltrane, the funky mutations of soul and jazz, Black Jazz Records took full advantage of all the possibilities that lay ahead for jazz. Black Jazz Records was the first black-owned jazz label in 50 years and they achieved the kind of music status that most '70s and '80s indie record labels could barely dream of. Later DJs Gilles Peterson and Theo Parrish, made mixes and a compilation album focusing on the Black Jazz label. Through the music, you will hear in my first mix I hope to give you a flavour of what they brought to the jazz world, and how much the music from Black Jazz Records means to me from their short existence. A further note – in 1971, the first Black Jazz Record album released was Gene Russell's New Direction, which inspired the birth of NuDirections. Although the label only lasted a little over five years Black Jazz Records carved its place in the history of jazz. Detroit might be synonymous with techno, but it also has a rich house tradition. And Rick Wade—FKA Big Daddy Rick—is one of Detroit house's key players. Along with the likes of Keith Worthy, Theo Parrish and the late Mike Huckaby (who Wade had a lifelong friendship and friendly rivalry with), he created a hybrid sound that is both techno and house, effortlessly soulful, sculpted and glowing—and Midwest to the core. As Tajh Morris said in a retrospective review of one of his classic records, "growing up in Buchanan, Michigan, meant that Wade was much closer to Chicago than he was to Detroit." Many of Wade's best records were released on Harmonie Park, his era-defining label that also featured plenty of work from Huckaby. Those EPs still sound fresh and timeless today, qualities that extend to Wade's RA Podcast, which features 90 minutes of smooth-as-butter house old and new. Over the years he's kept the flame burning for the smouldering sounds of Detroit house, working in sounds from younger producers like Folamour along the way. Enjoy listening to a master at work. @rick-wade Read more at https://ra.co/podcast/923

Deon is a Detroit native whose roots stem from the crates of family. Growing up hearing many different styles of music was the initial inspiration. His career began in 2015 as resident DJ & organizer for the monthly hip-hop showcase "Bluecollar Gentleman". Around the same time, working with Theo Parrish to promote the Music Gallery party series and eventually spending years behind the scenes at Sound Signature. That work would culminate in a co-curation role for the DJ Kicks compilation “Detroit Forward” (K7 Records) where he enlisted artists that represent the progressive sounds of today. His own track, "North End Funk", was selected to join the mix, making his production credit debut. With over a decade of experience in Detroit's music community, Deon has been seasoned by the many worlds within. Ranging from the city's hip-hop scene to the world of underground dance music, and even serving as resident DJ for DeSean Jones' Urban Art Orchestra, all of these worlds inform the musical range in his sets.Inspired by everything from jazz, funk, & soul, to more modern black dance music forms like hip-hop/r&b, house, techno, & broken beat. His sets aim to employ elements from all these forms with culture in mind.Aside from playing gigs, Deon also enjoys programming events of his own such as the "Healin' Session" party series and the music and art exhibition, "Black Music". https://soundcloud.com/deonjamarmd https://www.instagram.com/deonjamar/ Recorded on July 1, 2023 in Long Island City, Queens NY. In 2008 I started a series of radio shows with fellow Freak and host, Jonny Rock. The original format was based around vinyl. Digital started to creep in, then CD's, then YouTube rips, and so on. But the idea remained the same, that we were sharing our discoveries with an audience.Fast forwarding a couple of years and expanding on the original concept, I will once again be playing dance music that you may or may not have heard, but this time said music will be readily available, if pointed in the right direction of course. The idea is for you to use me as your selector slash shop assistant in a virtual record store. Not only will I be shouting about both old and new music, but I will also be following it up with a series of compilations to be released on my label, Classic throughout the year. I will be your slightly odd, slightly off-centre, guide. But ultimately and most importantly, your friendly on-line record shop assistant. Like most multi-genre music fans, London-based Ruby Savage approaches DJing through a wide-angle lens. Whether she's touring, playing her post-punk disco party, In Flames, or hosting her monthly show on NTS, the Amsterdam native opts for warm, bouncy tunes that traverse dub, jazz and '80s proto-house. As she once Mixmag, she isn't beat-matching but "heartbeat-matching." For her, a dance is a means to feeling the full spectrum of emotions in a healthy way. Years spent behind-the-scenes at influential institutions have added to her understanding of energy and flow. She's worked the counter at Honest Jon's Records, managed Theo Parrish's Sounds Signature label (plus created the Wildheart Recordings sister label) and Gilles Peterson's Brownswood imprint, in addition to helping the Worldwide FM don launch Arc Records. When she's not DJing, Savage is spearheading community initiatives like Don't Be A Creep, an educational platform about club safety, as well as Artist Recovery Club for creative growth among music-makers. For her RA podcast, the vinyl enthusiast crafted a house music odyssey through soul, disco and gospel-inflected cuts like "Glory" by Waajeed and Dames Brown. It's an uplifting excursion through joy, catharsis and self-affirmation, relayed straight from the heart. @kwasiba3000 Read more at https://ra.co/podcast/895
Theo Parrish is a Detroit legend who put out a series of edits on vinyl simply labeled Uget (ugly edit) that were lofi and interesting. I love what he's doing here and wish more editors would use this quick-and-dirty style. If I were to guess what's going on or wanted to construct an edit in this style myself, I'd start with original vinyl. After identifying the breaks and interesting bits that I'd want to loop, I'd record a bunch of needle drops into a simple DAW like Audacity then move them around and copy-n-paste them until I had a 10-minute banger like “Party Going On”. Don't bother quantizing anything, and make sure the record needle is old and the vinyl dusty. Chef's kiss. As broadcast April 5, 2023 with plenty to peruse and far more beyond that. Detroit. How can one possibly attempt to cover one of the world's music capitals in just two hours? In this episode I'm speaking with Alabama artist, music producer and musician, Byron The Aquarius, aka Byron Dewayne Blaylock. Byron has appeared on some of the most groundbreaking independent labels; Apron, BBE, Shall Not Fade, Eglo, Wild Oats, Sound Signature and now he is the owner of his own imprint Talknoise. Recognised globally in electronic music for his sublime jazz-infected house sound, his keyboard wizard skills and his deep love for melody and harmony, which has led him to work with the likes of Jeff Mills, Theo Parrish, Kai Alce and tour the world, playing festivals such as Dekmantel, Dimensions, Suncebeat and many others. Byron and I spoke about surrounding yourself with the right support and the importance of understanding the music business is just as important as understanding your art. FOLLOW BYRON THE AQUARIUS: https://www.instagram.com/byrontheaquarius/ https://ra.co/dj/byrontheaquarius/biography https://www.facebook.com/ByronTheAquariusMusic
When Byron The Aquarius talks about live frequencies, his enthusiasm is infectious. A keys player by trade, Byron's love for melody and harmony has consistently drawn the attention of electronic music's leading labels and producers. In 2015, Byron released a ten track solo album on BBE entitled “Planets of Love.” When he wasn't working on his own music, he was playing keys in the studio with Kai Alce. These creations got into the hands of Theo Parrish, who loved the sound of his sublime jazz-infected house and picked two tracks to release on his legendary Sound Signature label in 2016. The resulting “Highlife EP” has been hailed as “stunning”, “intoxicating” and “essential.” Fast forward to 2022 and he's launching his own label, as explained... “I made this mix to celebrate the launch of my new label Talknoi$e. I'm kicking off the first release with ‘Shroomz, Guns and Roses', inspired by the time I spent in lockdown reconnecting with myself through nature. It's out now. Check it out in the mix..”
Theo Parrish is a Detroit legend who put out a series of edits on vinyl simply labeled Uget (ugly edit) that were lofi and interesting. I love what he's doing here and wish more editors would use this quick and dirty style. If I were to guess what's going on, or wanted to construct an edit in this style myself, I'd start with original vinyl. After identifying the breaks and interesting bits that I'd want to loop, I'd record a bunch of needle drops into a simple DAW like Audacity then move them around and copy-n-paste them until I had a 10-minute banger like "Party Going On". Don't bother quantizing anything, and make sure the record needle is old and the vinyl dusty. Chef's kiss. Jill Scott - Slowly Surely (Theo Parrish Uget) Anthony Hamilton - Lucille (Theo Parrish Uget) Rahsaan Patterson - It Ain't Love (Theo Parrish Uget) The Dells - No Way Back (Theo Parrish Uget) Kool & The Gang - This Is You, This Is Me (Theo Parrish Uget) Sugarhill Gang - Hot Hot Summer Day (Theo Parrish Uget) Freddie Hubbard - Little Sunflower (Theo Parrish Uget) The Dells - Get On Down (Theo Parrish Uget) Harold Melvin and The Blue Notes - The Love I Lost (Theo Parrish Uget) Willie Hutch - Slick (Theo Parrish Uget) Sylvester - Dance (Disco Heat) (Theo Parrish Uget) Made In USA - Never Gonna Let You Go (Theo Parrish Uget) GQ - Lies (Theo Parrish Uget)

As broadcast January 7, 2022 with plenty of extra Joan & Tone for your podcast spirits. Tonight for our first guest artist selector show of the new year, we couldn't be more thrilled to have welcomed Joan As Police Woman to the show to discuss the creative process that went into her latest album with Tony Allen and Dave Okumu. A surprising one night jam session in Paris in 2019 bloomed into the glimmering, brooding flower that is The Solution Is Restless, one of our favorite albums of the year. Joan talked quite specifically about what moved her to create some of the tunes on the LP, and also how she met the late, great father of afrobeat and kind of "took a chance" asking if he'd like to record with her. Not to be missed for fans of the artist or the album.#feelthegravityTracklisting:Part I (00:00)Joan As Police Woman with Tony Allen & Dave Okumu – Take Me To Your LeaderGhost Funk Orchestra – Fuzzy LogicOrions Belte – Cherchez La GhostThe Rebels of Tijuana – Et le blizzard s'estompeLeenalchi – Ultimate PrescriptionPart II (30:36)Robert Glasper – So Beautiful (Live at Capitol Studios)James Booker – Black Minute WaltzJ Dilla – Waves Joan As Police Woman with Tony Allen & Dave Okumu – MasqueraderTony Allen – Politely Part III (60:43)Joan As Police Woman with Tony Allen & Dave Okumu – Geometry Of YouTony Allen feat Damon Albarn – Go BackKrystle Warren & The Faculty – If It Wasn't For The LakeBaths – Lovely BloodflowMeshell Ndegeocello – Forget My NameHere We Go Magic – Over The Ocean Part IV (99:55)Joan As Police Woman with Tony Allen & Dave Okumu – Get My BearingsTony Allen feat Theo Parrish, ESKA, & Andrew Ashong – Day Like This ReworkBridget Kearney – Who Are We KiddingThe Flamingos – I Only Have Eyes For YouConnan Mockasin – Momo'sMadlib – The StrollSly & The Family Stone – Skin I'm In

1. Smith and Mudd - Innerspace - KPM MUsic LTD2. You probably don't hear about Rick Wade as often as big-name Detroit house colleagues like Theo Parrish, Moodymann, or Kyle Hall, but that doesn't mean he isn't a legend in his own right. Consistently and almost obsessively, Big Daddy Rick has been dropping track after track of effortless deep house since the mid-90s. Sewn together with the perfect amount of kick, subtle oomph, and sweet, floating melody, they're the kind of tunes you simply never want to end; if you're anything like us, you'll drag back them to the start before they do. Right in time for Movement Detroit this weekend, Wade's prepared the second installment of our new THUMP Mix series, and it's soaked with his usual brand of charming deep house, with a little bit of funk mixed in.
