32: Midland is reborn and jamming with Arthur Russell

Truly an artist who needs no introduction to the No Tags universe, Midland is also one of the nicest people we know in this bottomless viper pit called dance music.Harry Agius has been a constant presence on the dancefloor since we were first finding our feet as music writers, and we've followed him every step of the way – from his early run of steppy house records on Aus Music and Phonica, to ‘Final Credits' mania in 2016, and his current incarnation as something of a grande dame of gay club culture. That role is one he's grown into slowly but surely, as he explains to us in this episode, and it blossoms into something very special on his debut album Fragments Of Us. It's far from your typical wham-bam, nine-tracks-and-an-ambient-interlude dance music long-player. Constructed around gay voices past and present – including ‘80s artist and Aids activist David Wojnarowicz, mould-breaking Black filmmaker Marlon Riggs, and Luke Howard of London institution Horse Meat Disco – it's a genuinely personal record that's also a kind of time capsule for future generations. We talked to Harry about growing into his identity as a gay DJ, the many, many reasons to turn down a gig, and whether Arthur Russell would have liked dubstep. Plus, he loves his films! We get an excellent recommendation and confirmation, if it were needed, that he's #PartyGirlHive. As ever, if you enjoyed this episode of No Tags, please do rate, review and subscribe on your go-to podcast app, as it does really help. VIDEO VERSION: https://youtu.be/fMfnyEcnJis Introducing Hector: Hector's journey to becoming a renowned DJ started at the age of 16 when he first stepped behind the decks. Originally from Mexico, his ambition led him to seek opportunities beyond his hometown, eventually finding his way to the vibrant music scene in London. Working at the legendary Phonica record shop proved to be a pivotal moment, as he crossed paths with influential figures like Anja Schneider and Loco Dice, who later offered him positions on their esteemed imprints, mobilee and Desolat. Through his association with Desolat, Hector solidified his place as an exciting and dynamic player in the global music scene. His captivating performances while touring the world garnered a strong and devoted following, earning him respect from fans and industry peers alike. Alongside his DJ career, Hector's hunger for artistic evolution led him to produce his own music, which was quickly picked up by highly respected labels such as mobilee, Desolat, One Records, and Tsuba. With an unrelenting desire to conquer the world's biggest clubs and festivals, Hector has made a name for himself as a resident DJ at Marco Carola's Music On in Ibiza. He has also graced renowned festivals like Time Warp, DEMF, Kazantip, Awakenings, BPM, Hideout, and Sunwaves, while delivering unforgettable club sets at esteemed venues like Tokyo's Womb, Space Miami, Fabric London, and New York's Output. In 2015, Hector shifted his focus to supporting others by forming the Vatos Locos crew, an assembly of talented and underrated producers and DJs who emerged during BPM Festival in Mexico. The crew operates as a family, emphasizing a democratic and ego-free approach to creating unforgettable experiences. From WMC and Movement in Detroit to Sonar and Ibiza's Underground, the Vatos Locos crew has brought their unique vibe to audiences worldwide. Hector's commitment to nurturing emerging talents extends to every aspect of Vatos Locos, including their record label, parties, and tours. VL Recordings, launched in 2016, aims to spotlight lesser-known artists and Hector's closest friends. With releases from artists like Mahony, Seb Zito, David Gtronic, and the VL crew, the label continues to showcase exceptional music. Hector's dedication to the brand goes beyond his DJ career. He oversees the entire process, from merchandise design to event production, encouraging the entire Vatos Locos crew to contribute to decision-making. As Hector's empire expands across the globe, he remains focused on maintaining the highest standards of quality and promoting his Vatos Locos familia. With an unwavering passion and clear vision, this Mexican powerhouse shows no signs of slowing down, leaving an indelible mark on the world of DJing. A Strangely Isolated Place

Play Episode Listen Later May 11, 2023

Well, a whole nine months since our last isolatedmix, we return in style… Scottish producer Lord Of The Isles has been high on rotation for me for about ten years now, with a string of electronic EPs across labels such as Mule Musiq, Permanent Vacation, Phonica and ESP Institue. Never guessing where he was going to push next, Neil has remained a bit of an enigma in style over the years and more recently, has captured hearts with an emotional, Poem-infused EP on Whities (more on that below) and in December just gone, a more ambient-leaning debut on Lapsus. The result is an artist that appeals to the electronic music fan in more ways than one. An artist you grow attached to as you walk alongside an ego-less evolution, welcoming new approaches and experimentation, always eager to see what he takes on next. While Neil is obviously adept a putting together a DJ mix [check], we're even more fortunate that Neil has taken a much more dedicated route to his mix contribution, with a 100% unreleased mix of his own material. ~Hi Neil, being a man of the outdoors it seems, where are you right now and what are you enjoying, outside of the music world? Not in the wilds at the moment, unfortunately! But I will be soon. I'm taking some recording equipment up north in a few weeks to hopefully finish my next album. Outside of writing music, I'm enjoying keeping fit and reading. I'm reading Under The Skin by Michael Faber right now for the second time. Subtle Thoughts by Lord Of The Isles Your style is notoriously hard to pin down (which I love), but I'd love to know how you would describe it to anyone new to your music. Deep and melodic maybe? I've always listened to all kinds of music and I've always had a very open mind in that regard. I suppose you are exposed to different things at different times throughout life. What music did you grow up on to influence it? There was a lot of Motown going on in my family very early on, and hearing stuff like Cream and Kate Bush now always transports me back in time when I hear it, as does a lot of soul, hip hop, and indie from 80s and 90s. Way too many to mention!! Growing up in the nineties, Acid House, Detroit techno, and Chicago House all played major roles in influencing my style, as did dub, dub techno, and all things ambient. Sorry, sounds all so clichéd! But it's true. Night Of The Endless Beyond by Lord Of The Isles You've recorded a more ambient-leaning isolatedmix, and a few of your most recent albums definitely veered this way too. Is this a reflection of your current taste or mood right now, or something else? It's just the way it's come together in the studio past few years, although, I am becoming aware that there's now a lot of people now that think all I do is ambient music. I have another album coming later this year that was completed over a year ago which is also ambient, but that will be the last release like that for a while I think, as the music I'm working on at the moment is definitely not ambient! Whities 029 by Lord Of The Isles Your Whities EP with Ellen Renton's vocals is definitely a personal favorite of mine. You also sampled Carl Sagan in your latest album. Can you tell me a bit about your approach to integrating guest vocals and samples? With Ellen, I write music inspired by her poems. Other vocal samples are usually things I hear in films or documentaries that resonate with me. Growing up listening to artists like the Orb, BOC, and The Black Dog has given me an appreciation for disparate vocal samples. I love the cinematic quality it adds to the atmosphere. Parabolas Of Neon by Lord Of The Isles You have a monthly radio show on Openlab, How do you go about selecting music for the show, or what can people expect? I still buy and collect a lot of music, so it's a great outlet for me to share music I love. You'll hear mostly, electronica, deep house, techno, and breakbeat. Glisk Science EP by Lord Of The Isles Your isolatedmix is 100% unreleased music, so no tracklist here. Can you tell us a bit about how you put it together? It's a bit of a hybrid set - half DJ half live, all unreleased music. It may well be the last ambient thing from me for a while. No plans to release any of it at the moment. Lastly, I read you're a candle fan (as am I) What's your latest scent?!Lol! :) I have a trial tester from an amazing new Scottish aromatherapy brand called àile. They do amazing products and are thinking about doing a candle. It's cedar wood, mandarin, and clove I think. It's great!~ astrangelyisolatedplace · isolatedmix 120 - Lord Of The Isles Listen on Soundcloud or the ASIP Podcast.Download MP3(No tracklist as all unreleased material)Artwork image by Faisal Waheed.Lord Of The Isles Bandcamp | Discogs | Soundcloud

Playfully bringing the deep grooves to the underground and the pumping house to the big rooms, Glasgow’s Austin Ato has seen his profile rise over the past two years. Initially releasing on the taste-maker Phonica's white-label imprint, showcasing a blend of live keys and drums with exquisite sampling, he then created a blazing 12” of loopy, disco and drum machine house for Man Power’s Me Me Me label. This immediately put him on our radar, and we've supported ever since. His music comes in many forms, be it afrohouse on Defected with "Oh Mama" or making some Detroit and Chicago influenced tunes for Luke Solomon's Classic Music Company with 'Drip' and 'Heat' from the EP named after the latter. His DJ sets have led him to play many of the best parties in the UK from Percolate with Daphne and Floating Points, to Horsemeat Disco and Karizma. Having evolved from the enigmatic Drums of Death, our man Ato has a diverse ear, and a knowledge of what makes a groove. He serves up an hour of eclectic ear food for us in the mix series, moving through multiple genres, but always with a rhythm which urges you to move. Welcome to the weekend once more... Hailing from Okinawa, now-Tokyo-based producer IORI once cut his teeth as an assistant for David Mancuso’s revered party, The Loft, in New York City, where he learnt a meticulous sonic mentality from his audiophile mentor. This permeates his carefully-handled arrangements, which have helped make his name and define a series of spacey, atmospheric originals and remixes for proponent imprints like Phonica and Prologue to name a few. Since his striking 2009 debut, Galaxy, which took its cue from Basic Channel and Manuel Gottsching, the Japanese producer has developed an immensely expressive dubbed-out sound in his own right. The first culmination of that is 2012’s excellent Nexus album for Bitta, a label owned by Far Eastern rising star DJ Nobu, seeing his ambient productions sit nicely with his hypnotic dance tunes. Two year stay in Berlin in early 2010s helped IORI gain a foothold in the international stage. He has since traveled across Europe, validating his characteristic meditative techno set, which is just the tip of his huge musical iceberg that ranges from low-slung house to leftfield oddballs. Despite his return to Japan in 2015, his presence remains strongly felt through frequent European tours. 2016 saw IORI release the Cold Radiance album, where his sci-fi ambient side grew fully- fledged. For an artist that has produced immersive and spacious pieces, it was a logical continuation of his extensive career as a producer. Eschewing the club-orientated perspective, it certainly proved IORI’s expressional depth and does justice to his artistic intention, his acute ears for spellbinding details standing out in sharp relief, which raised expectations of his promising future. (by Yusaku Shigeyasu) You can find IORI productions on labels such as @phormarecords, @semantica-records, @phonicarecords, @kr3_records, @djnobu_bitta, @awryrecords, @user-79693200 (Oktave Records), @fieldrecords and more Tracklist : 1 @artefakt-official - Ganzfeld Effect 2 @ValentinoMora - Yant Suea 3 @erikadotnet - North Hex ( @Orphx remix) 4 @Cassegrain - Lop Nor 5 @toma-kami - This Side Up (@forest-drive-west Remix) 6 @naturalelectronicsystem - Marea 7 @mownofficial - A New Life Is Born 8 @iori927 - Under The Water (@Wata Igarashi remix) 9 @benbui - Star dust 10 @Psyk - Outline 11 @Forest-Drive-West - Hidden Past 12 HIGMA (@djyukimasa & @drafted01 )- Follow the Sign 13 @svrecaofficial - Mountain Splitter (@ValentinoMora remix) 14 Marsel - Bambu 15 @stefanvincent - Grey Haze Follow IORI here : @iori927 https://www.residentadvisor.net/dj/iori https://www.facebook.com/ioria92781/ https://www.instagram.com/iori_asano/ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Follow OUTER DIMENSION here : https://open.spotify.com/show/7AuvVaOqgYPxL7NTME38cT https://soundcloud.com/outerdimension www.instagram.com/outerdimension/ www.facebook.com/OUTERDIMENSION/ Infos & Promos outerdimension.au@gmail.com

His record collection is a treasure trove of knowledge when it comes to unusual scenes and sounds and will put anyone’s to shame. He has held residences at places as diverse as Classic at The End, Key at Phonica and Herbal, and his own productions take in whatever he wants, be it house on The Nothing Special or techno on ESP Institute. There is no holding back over the course of his podcast, which gets straight to business with some wild breakbeat action. All forms of house from jacked up to deep, celebratory to acid then get seamlessly linked together into something that feels very much informed by the past but in no way a slave to the classics. It’s the sound of a man who very much knows what he’s doing in top form.

This year we added a new resident to the Egg family in the form of Luther Vine. You might know Luther from behind the Phonica Records counter where he works full time and is an avid vinyl enthusiast and a particularly charismatic member of Phonica's close-knit team. Since Luther joined us earlier this year, he's shared his Egg billings with the likes of Colin Benders, Mariel Ito, Omar-S, Pariah & more, and has brought Phonica's in-house team to the club to soundtrack our Loft and Basement on a number of occasions. To mark the end of 2018 and take stock of Luther's trajectory so far with us, the vinyl connoisseur shares a 60-minute podcast which showcases his varied taste in house, techno, electro and everything in between.

Undoubtedly one of our must check producers at the moment Warsaw's Bartosz Kruczyński with his Earth Trax project has enjoyed a string of essential cuts exploring ambient, emotive house and dusty techno jams over the last couple of years on Rhythm Section, Dopeness Galore and Phonica. Last month saw the release of his 'Mirage' EP for our Parsien friends Les Yeux Orange while this month is the 'Bailando/Aquamarine' 12'' on Echovolt with regular collaborator Newborn Jr. He's in the UK on December 9th for a gig at Shelter for Cantaloupe in London. Should be well worth a look; meanwhile enjoy this killer mix he's kindly put together for us https://soundcloud.com/bartoszkruczynski

So, whenever I make a mix at home, I tend to go through all my records and then come up with a goofy name that kind of informs the mix, gives a theme of some sort, and helps get a bit of a vibe on when I'm on my tod. So this one's called... IT'S A DISCO ROCK PARTY TRACKLIST: Cloud One – Disco Juice Rah Band – Perfumed Garden Quando Quango – Love Tempo Unknown – Alomoko (Joe Clausell edit) Material (with Nona Hendryx) – Busting Out Insanlar – Kime Ne (Ricardo Villalobos remix) June Montana – I Need Your Love Oliver Nickels – Crocketts JX3P Patrice Rushen – Come Back To Me Sly and Robbie – No Name on the Bullet Loose Ends – Hanging on a String (Frankie Knuckles Reprise) Other than that, what I've been up to lately in the studio... I'm about to have a record out under the name Earth Patterns. A new name as it's a new sound for me... It will be released on Utopia Records, which is a label by Alex Bradley (known previously for his Love Fever parties in London), in collaboration with Phonica. I think it will be the 5th release, following records from Soichi Terada, Modaji, Lars Bartkhun and Vangelis Katsoulis. We've just got the test pressings back, and you can check it out on my soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/benjaminsun/sets/first-light More on Utopia here: https://soundcloud.com/utopia-records And if anyone is interested in his visual work and other social channels, find me on these: https://www.instagram.com/bensunnn http://www.facebook.com/bensunmusic https://twitter.com/bensunnn

Today's Ransom Note Mix comes from Warsaw-based producer @bartoszkruczynski aka Earth Trax. Since debuting as The Phantom in 2010, he has released (and is set to release) on a range of labels including Growing Bin, Dopeness Galore, Phonica, Echovolt and Shall Not Fade. In particular, his 'Sax & Flute' 12" on Rhythm Section was widely hailed as one of the finest house records of 2016. He's been kind enough to record a Ransom Note Mix for us, and I don't think we're overselling it when we say it's one of the best mixes we've heard so far this year, shifting and cycling through moods yet remaining totally of a piece. House grooves to warm your heart and heal your soul.

The next Heartcast session is from a cult hero and good friend of Love Dose, COTTAM. Cottam first came to wider attention with a series of limited edition 12″s released from 2009 onwards, showcasing his production talents by re-working afro-beat, neo-soul, funk & hip-hop into quirky deep house burners. He has gone on to release original music & reworks on Story, Use Of Weapons, Aus, Amp Art, Flight Recorder, Sound Of Speed, Endless Flight, Phonica, Wolf Music, Delusions Of Grandeur, Tru Thoughts & Audio Parallax and DJed around the world mixing techno, deep house, disco and anything else with a groove into a rich sonic stew. 2014 saw the realisation of a long held ambition with the launch of his own label, Ruff Draft. INTERVIEW > www.inverted-audio.com/magic-mountain-high Magic Mountain High is a collaboration between David Moufang aka Move D, Gal Aner and Jordan Czamanski aka Juju & Jordash. As Magic Mountain High they've released one record on Workshop Records entitled 'Workshop xx', which was recorded a year ago at Move D's studio. All three tracks are based on live jams and improvisations in the studio, similar to how Magic Mountain High perform on stage, but made shorter so as to fit on vinyl. Ahead of Magic Mountain High's London performance on Saturday 9th March for Phonica and ReviveHER alongside Vakula and Maurice Fulton we caught up with Gal and Jordan for a short interview, where we discuss Freerotation, their live setup and how they manage to work together despite geographical differences. This Inverted Audio mix is a recording of the trio playing live at Panoramabar in September 2012, with guest vocals by Eric D Clark and when we say live, we mean 100% live, no cheats, no edits just the plain truth.
