In this episode of the podcast Sascha and I discuss the nature of reality. We consider the practical appeal of living inside a consensus reality, the value of remembering that real doesn't mean absolute and what it's like when truth we've relied on cracks apart to reveal who-knows-what swirling underneath. We look at examples from our lives of ways grief offered glimpses into layers of reality we weren't expecting, like and don't like the way that makes us feel and wonder at what kind of shimmering endlessness we might be swimming in.
You're awake again at 3:00am. You can't go back to sleep. You caclulate how much sleep you'll have if you go back to sleep right now. Then, while staring at the ceiling, a voice inside your head decides to make up a (absolutely truthful and believable) story about a missed opportunity with another couple and why they aren't responded to your messages to meet again.... Sound familiar? In this episode Meshei from Expansive Connection helps us to understand where that voice is coming from, how to recognize the lack of logic in that voice and how to redirect the conversation to something more logical and accurate. Also, you are not the only one expriencing these very convincing voices! Many of us experience an inner voice: we silently talk to ourselves as we go about our daily lives. CrowdScience listener Fredrick has been wondering about the science behind this interior dialogue. We hear from psychologists researching our inner voice and discover that it's something that begins in early childhood. Presenter Caroline Steel meets Russell Hurlburt, a pioneering scientist who devised a method of researching this - and volunteers to monitor her own inner speech to figure out what's going on in her mind. She discovers that speech is just part of what's going on in our heads, much of our inner world in fact doesn't involve language at all but includes images, sensations and feelings. Caroline talks to psychologist Charles Fernyhough, who explains one theory for how we develop an interior dialogue as young children: first speaking out loud to ourselves and then learning to keep that conversation going silently. No one really knows how this evolved, but keeping our thoughts quiet may have been a way of staying safe from predators and enemies. Using MRI scanning, Charles and Russell have peered inside people's brains to understand this interior voice and found something surprising: inner dialogue appears to have more in common with listening than with speaking. Caroline also has an encounter with a robot that has been programmed to dialogue with itself. Which leads us to some deep questions: is our inner voice part of what makes us human, and if so, what are the consequences of robots developing this ability? Scientist Arianna Pipitone describes it as a step towards artificial consciousness.Featuring: Professor Charles Fernyhough, University of Durham, UK Professor Russell Hurlburt, University of Nevada, Las Vegas, USA Dr Arianna Pipitone, University of Palermo, Italy Presenter: Caroline Steel Producer: Jo Glanville Editor: Cathy Edwards Sound design: Julian Wharton Studio manager: Donald MacDonald Production co-ordinator: Ishmael Soriano(Image: Mixed Race boy looking up Credit: Jose Luis Pelaez Inc via Getty Images)

Often, before The Hamlin Avenue Boyz even begin to ‘roll tape' in the Homan Studio - Vince and Edward will essentially just bullshit-a-bit to get the conversational juices flowing. While there is usually a clearly identified starting point Where the Boyz will signal the booth to ‘roll tape'; many times the tape has been running since the Boyz entered the control room headed to the recording area of the studio. All happening while there is cool music, usually selected by the engineer, playing in the distant background. BTW - That very music playing in the background can at times influence what conversational direction the Boyz sometimes choose to take. It may also sometimes show up as the soundtrack backdrop or bed for the segment. This bullshit-a-bit period has produced so many moments over the years that the entire Hamlin Avenue Boyz Podcast Team are all usually glad they got it captured. All of the tracks that comprise “Inside My Head”, the 16th album of podcast segments produced by The Hamlin Avenue Boyz, were all born from bullshit-a-bit beginnings. Every one of them. These are definitely something to sprinkle in with your next beautiful 'tug on da glass chalice' or self-assembled Doobie ceremony. The Boyz did (and do)…..can't you tell? The best way to predict the future is to create it. So how do we do that? If we don't actively “program” what our mind thinks about, it's scary to think about what the mind defaults to. Fear. Doubt. Uncertainty. What if… These are the symptoms of being in survival mode. When you're in survival mode, you cannot be in creator mode. This is where the power of questions come in. What questions are you asking yourself daily? Are you not aware? Perhaps you might explore what your default questioning is… and then decide if there is a better question you want to be asking yourself. The beautiful thing is your mind will answer whatever question you ask. THIS is the power of questions. We may not need better answers. We may only need to ask better questions! --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/nick-davies7/support

He is touring the show - which includes a group discussion - to colleges, high schools, mental health and non-profit organizations, medical schools, companies, and anyone else who wants to host this inspiring, life changing event. Virtual performances are available, though in-person is preferred! In addition to Inside My Head, Zak is creating a docuseries about the connection between mental conditions and creativity, called Insanely Talented. He is co-writing three shows with the brilliant and lovely Adele Powers: Anthem, a musical that explores why we sing the national anthem (conceived by Rachel Payne); a musical about a unicorn called That Musical About a Unicorn; and a musical about Judaism, called Happy Challah Days: A Jewish Revue-ish. Zak is also arranging and co-orchestrating Unlimited, a musical revue of the work of Stephen Schwartz's (composer of Wicked, Pippin, Godspell, and Children of Eden, and soundtracks of the Hunchback of Notre Dame, Prince of Egypt, Pocahontas, and Enchanted). Zak has won several music awards including the Fenno Heath Award for writing the new Yale song, the Neva Greenwood award for writing a symphony in 8th grade, the Mount Vernon Piano Competition (playing “Rhapsody in Blue” with the Mount Vernon Orchestra in 8th grade), and was selected as a composer for the Johnny Mercer Songwriters Project at Northwestern (a mixture of a thrilling week of writing, and a deep depression). https://www.insidemyheadmusical.com/ Zak graduated from Yale with a BA in music composition in 2008 - two years after his exhilarating and terrifying first psychotic episode. He is very glad that he returned to school for the following semester, following his psychiatrist's advice. Beyond musical theater, Zak is an avid mental health activist, speaking about his mental conditions on “This is Actually Happening” (podcast with 45K+ plays), and “Moments of Clarity” (radio show with 1M+ listeners). In 2018, he won the Young Leader Award from the New York State chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), and is a featured speaker with This is My Brave, RespectAbility, and the JED Foundation. Zak's hobbies include barbershop singing (he is a member of the Alexandria Harmonizers, a choir of 60 people who age from their 20s to 80s!), playing golf, watching college basketball, spending time with his cats, eating fancy food (usually vegetarian), traveling (he has been to 48 US states and 26 countries), and, after years of resisting TV, watching shows like “Grace and Frankie” and “The Ultimatum” with his fiancee, Lenna. He feels incredibly grateful to have her and the rest of his family and friends in his life. Zak tries not to use phrases "mental illness" or "bipolar disorder", because he feels they imply there's something wrong with him (although he knows those terms fit well for some of us). He prefers the terms “mental conditions” and simply, “bipolar”. https://soundcloud.com/zaksandler/mental-episode-1-from-a-bit-too-much-about-me --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/bravemaker/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/bravemaker/support

I recently had the honor of sitting down with the brilliantly gifted Broadway pianist, Zak Sandler. Sandler has played piano on Broadway for Wicked, Mean Girls, Motown, and The Color Purple. His original musical about his mental health journey, Inside My Head, premiered at the NY Theatre Barn, was selected as a semi-finalist at the O'Neill Theater's National Music Theater Conference, and presented at the Kennedy Center's Millennium Stage. Zak revised the show as a writer-in-residence at the Kennedy Center's REACH page-to-stage festival in January 2022. He is touring the show - which includes a group discussion - to colleges, high schools, mental health and non-profit organizations, medical schools, companies, and anyone else who wants to host this inspiring, life changing event. Zak graduated from Yale with a BA in music composition in 2008 - two years after his exhilarating and terrifying first psychotic episode - in part thanks to the excellent medical care, and psychotherapy, from a favorite practitioner in New Haven. Beyond musical theater, Zak is an avid mental health activist, speaking about his mental condition on “This is Actually Happening” (podcast with 45K+ plays), Jaison Thomas' Brand Identity Podcast, and “Moments of Clarity” (radio show with 12M+ listeners). In 2018, he won the Young Leader Award from the New York State chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), and is a featured speaker with This is My Brave, RespectAbility, and the JED Foundation.
“Oh Lisa has always loved playing tennis.” Mum would reply. It was true, since the first time I picked up a racquet I knew I was born to play tennis. I never doubted that I was meant to become a famous tennis player one day. That is, until I realized something was living inside my head.I remember my first tennis competition like it was yesterday, even though I was actually only 8 years old. That's when people really started to talk about me. I beat all my opponents easily. I felt so happy when they gave me the winning trophy. My parents were watching from the side and I could see them clapping and cheering. From that moment on my whole life was tennis, I practised every day after school and all through the weekend. Even when I met my boyfriend Jack, it didn't stop me from spending all my free time playing tennis. Jack understood, he was a keen footballer so his weekends were busy with sport too.
