This week's episode of the Talkhouse Podcast came together by way of my colleague and friend Keenan Kush, who jokingly referred to the music of today's guests as "Keenan-core." We've got a conversation between the duos Kit Sebastian and Pearl & The Oysters. Kit Sebastian came together in London, but their musical (and even geographical) pedigrees are spread much wider. Kit Martin and Merve Erdem, now based in Turkey and France, play music that reflects their locations. Tropicalia and psychedelic pop flirt with an array of other influences to create something that sounds almost out of time. Their latest album New Internationale came out last year on Flying Lotus' Brainfeeder label, and it adds Azerbaijani and some funk to the mix. Check out the track “Faust” right here. Pearl & The Oysters is also a duo with international roots, having moved from France over a decade ago to Florida, but ending up in Los Angeles. Jazz and Tropicalia also inform their indie pop, and they also ended up on a hip label run by another musician: In this case, Peanut Butter Wolf's Stones Throw. Juliette Pearl Davis and Joachim Polack—sometimes known as Juju and Jojo—put out a great album last year called Planet Pearl. Check out “Side Quest” from that album right here. In this wide-ranging conversation, these two duos talk about their geographic moves and sounds, analog vs. digital recording, favorite filmmakers, and how one cold email kickstarted Kit Sebastian. Enjoy. This episode of TNT brings us to the left coast to dig into the famed LA independent label Stones Throw Records. To kick this series off, we bring you something bittersweet - 2006's iconoclastic “Donuts” by rapper, producer, beatmaker, and record collector extraordinaire J Dilla - released on February 7, 2006, just three days before Dilla tragically passed away.
In Episode 22 of Flow State Podcast, Harry sits down with DJ, producer, and Stones Throw Records founder Peanut Butter Wolf for an inspiring deep dive into music and legacy. They talk about the birth of Stones Throw Records and reflect on coming up during the golden era of hip-hop. Peanut Butter Wolf shares stories about working with celebrated artists like J Dilla, Madlib, and MF DOOM, offering rare insights into the process behind some of hip-hop's most iconic records. Harry geeks out over PBW's massive vinyl collection, which has become the stuff of legend. To close out the episode, Harry heads to Peanut Butter Wolf's Gold Line Vinyl Bar, where he spits a freestyle inspired by records handpicked by the man himself. ----- SHOW NOTES Step Into A World - KRS-One https://youtu.be/xbJxcFyaCpI?si=CRVkf601is8W5Gbl My World Premiere - Charizma & Peanut Butter Wolf https://www.stonesthrow.com/store/my-world-premiere/ Scratch Documentary https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scratch_(2001_film) Peanut Butter Breaks https://www.stonesthrow.com/store/peanut-butter-breaks/ Super Duck Breaks - DJ Babu https://www.stonesthrow.com/store/super-duck-breaks/ Madvillainy https://www.stonesthrow.com/store/madvillainy/ Champion Sound - Jaylib https://www.stonesthrow.com/store/champion-sound/ All Caps - Madvillain https://youtu.be/gSJeHDlhYls?si=biqBkTDs6uajWoui Rhinestone Cowboy - Madvillain https://youtu.be/s4iR668Ki3I?si=dduUVTV3uKbvhMsL Accordion - Madvillain https://youtu.be/rpaonSDPw7Y?si=QNJJB7drYGEQ0RvO Goldline Bar https://goldlinebar.com/ ----- Timestamps 00:00:00 Intro 00:01:38 Peanut Butter Wolf's first musical influences 00:06:21 The timeline of DJing and producing 00:11:39 Getting signed 00:14:48 Starting Stones Throw Records 00:24:19 The Stones Throw Logo 00:30:08 The Lootpack and other early collaborations 00:34:39 So many samples 00:37:15 Madvillainy 00:42:02 J Dilla / Jaylib 00:49:02 Music Videos 00:50:50 What do you listen for? 00:54:49 The record collection 00:57:36 Flow state, digging, and making beats 00:58:58 Campus Christy 01:01:14 Goldline Bar Freestyle

Rich Jones has a new album out called "Sour Dub". It's fully produced by SINAI (aka Sleep Sinatra) and it's not the weed smoking album that you might assume it to be. We talked with Rich about how the album's laid back sound makes it's "dripping" with "venom" somewhat sneaky. Then we talk about Rich's album pick for this episode - "Big Shots" by Charizma and Peanut Butter Wolf. Stream and purchase "Sour Dub" here: https://5oclockshadowboxers.bandcamp.com/album/sour-dub

A djembe led future soul burner blessed by the legendary London vocalist Colonel Red's scorching voice. Sounding like a 90's R&B jam thrown into the future before morphing into a 3am dancefloor blazer - definitely one for all the freaks out there. The remix package is a massive shout to Edseven's varied tastes and influences, enlisting a murderers' row of friends and overseas contacts to reinterpret the original. Japan's Grooveman Spot providing a heavy heavy classic Jazzy Sport beatdown version whilst Canadian due Potatohead People flip it into a dripping 80's Boogie track.

Total Devastation achieved legendary status in the early 90s with their hit, "Many Clouds of Smoke." The duo of Bernie Yo Potna Red Eye and Big Tone Smoke, along with DJ Tuff Cut Tim, came up in San Francisco's Mission District. As the some of the first Latin rappers in the Bay, they blazed trails independently with their first release "In The SF Streets." This led to a deal with PGA Records and a hit song that would change their lives. On this episode of the History of the Bay Podcast, Total Devastation recalls their early days navigating the gang life and being early pioneers for the cannabis movement decades before it became mainstream. Along the way, Total Devastation made waves in hip-hop, rocking shows with Lighter Shade of Brown and working with producers like Diamond D, Funkmaster Flex, and Peanut Butter Wolf. As they navigated industry politics, wear and tear from the business side pushed music to the back burner. After a hiatus, Total Devastation is now gearing up to release new music, entering into the legal cannabis business, and planning to make a documentary about the group. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/historyofthebay/support

“It's important to get your stuff heard by industry people but it's equally, if not more important, to find fans who have made it doing the stuff you're doing.” — Chris Manak [0:25:19]Founding a record label is no easy feat and making it not only survive but thrive for over 20 years is truly awe-inspiring. Stones Throw Records is one of the most prominent independent record labels, having helped develop artists like Madlib, J Dilla, MF Doom, and Anderson Paak, to name a few. Chris Manak, AKA Peanut Butter Wolf, is the Founder of this prolific label, and he joins us on the show today. Along with being at the helm of Stones Throw, Chris is also a DJ and producer. Having been exposed to a range of music early in his life, Chris has always had an appreciation for many genres. Many of his young memories have music woven into them, and it is clear these moments cemented Chris's passion. Along the way, he has also been lucky enough to have some positive influences who have been generous with sharing what they have, and Chris now approaches sharing in this same fashion. “Making beats and making tracks was what really got me out of [mourning Charizma's death]. It was my therapy more than anything.” — Chris Manak [0:33:08]In this episode, Chris talks about his musical journey and how he went from saving his lunch money to buy records to where he is today. We hear about his formative relationship with rapper Charizma, and the immense impact that his death had on Chris. After his passing, Chris left music behind for some time, only to return to work through the pain. We also talk about where the idea to start Stones Throw came from, how to stay enthusiastic about music when it is your job, and why streaming, in many cases, is helping rather than hindering labels. Key Points From This Peanut Butter Wolf Episode:What Chris's life was like growing up and his first musical influences and inspiration. Some of the first records and albums Chris remembers getting. How Chris started collecting 12 inches in fifth grade. An older person in Chris's life who introduced him to a lot of music. What Chris was doing before he started working with Charizma. How Chris met Charizma, and the relationship they had. The story of how Chris and Charizma started working together. The importance of having fans who have accomplished what you hope to achieve. How Chris and Charizma's manager helped them after they got signed. Hear how Charizma died and the impact that this had on Chris. The role that music played in helping Chris deal with Charizma's death. Some of the first gigs that Chris and Charizma played. Major lessons Chris learned from performing with Charizma. How Chris came to work with Kool Keith. Where Chris first got the idea to start a record label. Balancing musical tastes and trying to stay afloat as a label head. What it takes to run a label and some of the people on the Stones Throw Records team. How Stones Throw came to be a fully-kitted-out label. The biggest challenge that comes with running a record label. The decision to create the Stones Throw Records vinyl bar. Gratitude Chris feels for being around great music. What being a new father has been like for Chris. How Chris started using video in his performances. Chris's take on streaming services and why he supports these services. Why Chris feels like streaming helped save his label in some ways. Experiences where handshake deals have gone wrong in the past. Chris's top record label and producer picks. “As a label, we split our profits 50/50 with the artists, and we're transparent with our accounting.” — Chris Manak [1:15:36]“I think streaming helped save our label in certain ways.” — Chris Manak [1:16:19]Links Mentioned in Today's Episode:https://www.stonesthrow.com/artist/pbwolf/ (Chris) https://www.stonesthrow.com/ (Stones Throw Records) https://www.instagram.com/anderson._paak/?hl=en (Anderson .Paak)...

In the first episode of RELEVANT PARTIES we meet Chris Manak, better known as Peanut Butter Wolf. As the founder of Stones Throw Records, Manak is behind some of the most ground-breaking hip-hop records ever made, assisting artists like Madlib, J Dilla and MF Doom to reach their creative peaks. But although Stones Throw will always be associated with a certain seam of underground beatmaking, the Los Angeles label is home to every kind of musical eccentric: from Mayer Hawthorne’s vintage soul and the eccentric grooves of Dâm-Funk to Gary Wilson’s lo-fi new wave and experimental pop from Sudan Archives. Manak talks to Chal Ravens about the label’s musical growth, his childhood in San Jose, the tragic loss of his rap partner Charizma, and the extraordinary experience of watching a Stones Throw single go platinum around the world. FROM THE VAULTS: J Rocc live at the Root Down This live mix from J Rocc, Beat Junkies founder, DJ, and producer was recorded at the world famous Root Down party that happened every week in LA during the late ’90s and early ’00s. DJs like Loslito, Miles, Cut Chemist, DJ Dusk, Peanut Butter Wolf, and others could be heard spinning the best in hip-hop, funk, soul, roots, jazz and latin music. During its lifespan, the club drew indie hip-hop groups, funk bands, conscious MCs and athletic turn turntablists from around the state, and was an authentic piece of LAs local culture for nearly a decade. FROM THE VAULTS is an ongoing curation project produced by Ben Sinclair, resurfacing rare live performances and DJ sets recorded during dublab’s first ten years. Live at dublab Radio is produced by dublab. Sound editing and theme music are by Matteah Baim. Visit dublab.com to find out more!

BANG! @southernvangard #radio presents The Architect interview session! We’re longtime fans (when we say longtime we mean the 90s) of this Bay Area producer here at Southern Vangard Radio and have been playing numerous joints he’s been behind the boards on since the show started. When we bumped into him at A3C last year alongside Opio and Pep Love, we had no idea he was about to wrap up 2017 with a boat load of new material, with an eye on doing the same in 2018. We hear about his new work with Byrd Land, Cochise & Killa Kali, his outlook on the game today and working new young gunners like Kung Fuu. We also get into some DEEP Bay Area hip-hop history, including early days in Milpitas, CA with the one and only Charizma (RIP) & Peanut Butter Wolf, his first big break with Coolio and why folks made pilgrimages to The Architect's house when he scored his first sampler. The train don’t stop ya’ll, so get on board, sit back, press play and tune in to that #smithsonian #grade #twiceaweek // southernvangard.com // @southernvangard on #applepodcast #stitcherradio #soundcloud #mixcloud // #hiphop #rap #undergroundhiphop #DJ #mix #interview #podcasts #ATL #WORLDWIDE Recorded live January 29, 2018 @ Dirty Blanket Studios, Marietta, GA southernvangard.com @southernvangard on #applepodcasts #stitcherradio #soundcloud #mixcloud twitter/IG: @jondoeatl @southernvangard @cappuccinomeeks

This week Sam sits down with DJ and music producer Chris Manak, also known as Peanut Butter Wolf. Chris has been active in the music industry since the late '80s, and founded the LA-based independent record label @StonesThrow Records in 1996. For over 20 years, Chris' label has demonstrated a far-reaching taste in music, representing the many flavors of hip-hop alongside cross-genre and experimental acts. Aloe Blacc, Mayer Hawthorne, and Talk Easy alum Mndsgn are among the vast list of musicians on the Stones Throw roster. The first of a series spotlighting musicians from Stones Throw Records, this week's episode includes Sam and Chris discussing everything from Chris' musical influences while growing up (8:02), to the highs and lows of the evolving music industry (27:35), as well as his late friend and collaborator J Dilla (40:41). ------------------------------------------------- Music for the show provided by @Vanilla and @jinsangbeats. Rapper Big Pooh drops by the studio to drop knowledge on us. A lot of people thought his group, Little Brother, was going to be the next generation’s version of A Tribe Called Quest. Then they broke up. Pooh talks about bouncing back and what he learned about making partnerships work. Hint: It’s about listening. He also talks about how he copes with stage fright, which could be a problem for a rapper. He also tells us why he’s started managing other artists and how he’s learned to look at the business differently on behalf of someone else. Get all your wisdom here... If you love J. Dilla, Madlib, MF Doom, Mayer Hawthorne, Aloe Blacc, and Dam Funk then you have Peanut Butter Wolf to thank. We're in studio with the king of the West Coast underground. Through his label, Stones Throw Records, Peanut Butter Wolf has given the world important, and sometimes commercially successful music from J. Dilla, Madlib, MF Doom, Mayer Hawthorne, Aloe Blacc, and Dam Funk, among others. He also crosses genres as if they didn’t exist, taking experimental, or just plain weird explorations into punk, psychedelic and other fringe sounds from folks like James Pants, Vex Ruffin, and Mild High Club. On top of all that, he maintains an active DJ career, a series of Stones Throw events, and was the subject of a 2014 documentary: Our Vinyl Weighs A Ton. And although he has built a successful business — now celebrating its 20th anniversary and revered by music fans for consistently breaking credible and interesting acts — Wolf could hardly be called a businessman (although he is definitely a business, man). He’s much more of a cult leader, gaining (and possibly losing a few) devotees with each new release. How: He simply puts out music that he loves and wants people to hear, flying in the face of the reborn, data-driven music industry. Listen in as we explore how he keeps his creativity sharp and what drives him to keep it moving into his third decade.
BANG! @southernvangard #radio presents the @ohnothedisrupt #interview session! How about this as a follow up to the interview with DJ Romes last week?! This man needs absolutely no introduction, we don’t even know where to start. Dr. No took a break from working on new joints for Prodigy to chat with us about a multitude of things. Expanding on our conversation with Romes about their love for video games - we find out that not only is Oh an avid gamer, he’s damn near a developer! We discuss how Oh got into doing work video games, how different the process is and a DEEP discussion on his favorite video game of all time. In typical Vanguardian fashion we get into some history ish - like his admiration of the rhyming skills of his sister Stacy when he was a young 7 years old, making beats behind Madlib’s back and the early groups he formed with associates like MED. We have a really interesting discussion on the difficulty Oh had convincing Peanut Butter Wolf to put out his solo LP “The Disrupt” on Stones Throw and the record from Dilla that pushed it over the edge - what we all know today as “Move”. Oh also breaks down how Gangrene was formed with The Alchemist, their approach on the new album and his relentless work ethic. Last but not least - we chat about the THIRTY or FOURTY joints he and Madlib have stashed in the vault that could soon see the light of day, as well as his upcoming work with TriState from Gold Chain Military. There’s tons more inside, folks - push play now and go cop that Gangrene album now! #smithsonian #grade // #download #stream #listen #enjoy // southernvangard.com // @southernvangard on #itunes #podcast #stitcherradio #soundcloud #mixcloud // #hiphop #rap #dj #mixshow #interview #podcast #ATL #OXNARD #WORLDWIDE Recorded live Nov 01, 2015 @ Dirty Blanket Studios, Marietta, GA southernvangard.com @southernvangard on #itunes #podcast #stitcherradio #soundcloud #mixcloud twitter/IG: @jondoeatl @southernvangard @cappuccinomeeks

Intro : - L'Orange et Jeremiah Jae : Taken By The Night 3. Mix Future Basics : Playlist non communiquée. 2. Intro : Adrian Younge : Gloria (Zodiac Lovers) 2. This Hip-Hop collective has been in existence since 1994, Get Open was founded by SibaGiba when he was studying music at SUNY Purchase College. He met the other 4 original members in school; Kiambu, VonMeista, Zook, Los and DJ Jes Lover. Get Open has traveled and performed as headliners in Germany and France over the years and has also opened for artists such as KRS 1/BDP, De La Soul, Jungle Brothers, Tha Alkoholiks, Special Ed, and many others in the US. Through a collaboration with composer Saundi Wilson who also attended Purchase, Get Open was featured with the late Jazz Trumpeter Lester Bowie's creation: Hip-Hop Feel-Harmonic orchestra in 1995, which assembled more than 40 musicians and Get Open. During our senior year, 1996, we released our first 12inch vinyl single. It caught the attention of West coasts DJs like J.Rocc, DJ Numark,Truly Odd, Peanut Butter Wolf and T-Love the MC and journalist at URB magazine. From that single, Yellow Productions offered the group an EP deal which went on to sell 5,000 units in Europe without any promo. It featured Sadat X of Brand Nubian. During this time, Siba was enjoying great success after producing for Everlast's (House of Pain) multi platinum and grammy nominated album "Whitey Ford Sings The Blues". Overtime Records Inc was born and released a solo 12 inch single of VonMeista featuring Sadat X in association with Ozone Music (Co-Flow-El P, Mike Ladd, etc…). Although still making music seperately, the group has been on a hiatus since 2001. Siba formed Brüknahm with Mr Saundi Wilson, worked the Jettsonz Productions (Nina Sky, Sean Paul) and in 2009 co-founded a non-profit organization, the Hip-Hop Loves Foundation.

This week, a RIPEcast reprise from our pal, Bobby C Sound TV out of Denver. For his second go 'round on The RIPEcast, Bobby has put together this tasty, 67-minute eclectic mash-up of nu funk, hip hop, pop, R&B and more. Press play and enjoy, Boys and Girls! In case you missed him the first time around, here's a little more background on this week's guest.... It's not everyday a producer/DJ gets blogged by one of their favorite directors as is the case with Bobby C Sound TV who was recently blogged and called brilliant by Edgar Wright, director of such cult movies as Shaun Of The Dead, Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World and Hot Fuzz. Bobby C Sound TV is one Bobby Collins hailing from Denver, Colorado. He has been playing instruments from an early age and then a fateful show with Peanut Butter Wolf and Cut Chemist had him convinced on the spot that a pair of turntables were in his future. He has been DJing for the past 10 years and has played just about every venue in his home state including Red Rocks Amphitheater, The Fillmore as well as being the first artist in The First Bank Center (AEG's new 8,000 seat flagship venue) for its VIP party. In 2010 Bobby was one of 20 DJ's in the US selected to play the Sweatshop Mixer at The Coachella Music Festival. In early 2009 Bobby started messing around with a video DJ plug-in and soon after unveiled, "Bobby C Sound TV". His love of cinema was combined with his 10 years of DJ experience to create a pastiche of pop-culture that is visually stimulating and danceable at the same time. His live mash up DJ approach was applied to create crowd rocking routines with some of the most memorable music videos, movie scenes and just about everything in between. The past few years have seen him busier than ever on the production front with remixes and releases on 7 different labels worldwide and jumping on multiple top 10 lists for Juno Download and Beaport. Many more releases are on the way and his Soundcloud page has been getting thousands of plays and downloads each week while his youtube channel is fast approaching 225,000 plays. His tracks have been turning up in DJ sets all around the world as of late to packed dancefloors everywhere. Wow!!! Thank you San Francisco for making the 12th edition of Breakfast of Champions the best one yet! We're happy to report that Zach recorded most of the DJ sets from the day and they will be made available on The RIPEcast and/or our SoundCloud page in the coming months. Mayer Hawthorne just makes great soul music. The crazy thing is that he's really a hardcore Hip Hop fan and DJ. It's no surprise that he got his start getting signed by Peanut Butter Wolf to the independent label Stones Throw. What I enjoy about his music is that people from all walks of life can relate to his music young and old. As a crate digger I can easily identify with his style because this is the type of music I dig for to listen to and sample. As I write this Mayer is slated to appear on Letterman tomorrow so I think he's well on his way to becoming a household name soon so get in the know.
